Samba Bossa Nova ReviewLike a breath of fresh air in the stale world, this CD re-creates the warmth of feeling of the Jobim/Bonfa/Gilberto/de Moraes Samba / Bossa Nova songs of the mid sixties. The liner notes say "the children of the Bossa Nova generation are also coming of age and while many originally rebelled against their parents' music, they are now returning to it to carry the torch of the Bossa Nova style". Indeed, there is a song by the son and grandson of Jobim on this sunny CD.
And it has the authentic feel. Songs each by a different performer, but well chosen. The best song, for my money, is Rosa Passos' lyric version of the Ari Barroso song "E Luxo So." This is the song Stan Getz made a memorable version of on "Jazz Samba", the spectacular album that started it all. This song never fails to improve my mood and put a smile on my face whenever I hear it.
There is more Carnival polyrhythyms here than Bossa Nova had originally, which makes it all the more authentic. Pleasant music from beginning to end. Along with Bebel Gilberto's "Tanto Tempo", and Joao Gilberto's "Voz e Violao" of two years ago, this music breathes new life into an old form.
