Music for Violin, Guitar and Piano - Leonid Kogan ReviewThe correct title of this 1998 album is MUSIC FOR VIOLIN, GUITAR AND PIANO (UPC:5032636100200). Leonid Kogan is joined on various tracks by his wife violinist Elizaveta Gilels, guitarist Alexander Ivanov-Kramskoy, and pianist Andrei Mytnik. We have asked Amazon to update the title.
We obtained our copy in an effort to increase our Kogan library, and it is part of a large series released in 1998 on the Russian Revelation label. What we do NOT know is the source of the recordings because - in 2001 - it was broadly announced that Pipeline Music had acquired exclusive rights to more than 400,000 original audio and video recordings from the archives of the Russian State Television and Radio Company. The recordings dated back to the 1930s. Pipeline turned over the remastering job to Neural Audio (the XM Radio people) and it was released in 2002 on the Yedang Classics label. Would you believe, it was manufactured in Korea. So it seems that the 1998 RR disc must have been recreated from some other secondary source, but that information is not given in the album credits.
We bought the newer Yedang release in 2002 from a music club catalog based on the news that Neural Audio was remastering the RSTRC archive originals. Since the soundtrack is identical to the 1998 issue, the foremost consideration in acquiring these recordings is SOUND QUALITY. The 2002 Yedang release is far superior, with broader range and clarity. If you've ever heard XM radio on a good sound system, then you have some idea of how fresh and fine the Neural Audio remastering sounds. There is just no comparison.
We wouldn't discourage anyone from collecting this 1998 release to round out a collection of that series, because we ourselves were happy with it for several years and do not intend to part with it. If you don't have the 1998 disc, think about getting the better-sounding Yedang release. Either way, NOW IS THE TIME TO GET EITHER OF THESE DISCS BECAUSE THE RIGHTS HAVE CHANGED HANDS ONCE AGAIN:
In January 2006 The Orchard (huge distributor and marketer of independent music) announced that they secured exclusive digital rights to market this music in a deal made with Pipeline Music (the Yedang label licensee). So, that's how it goes - this fabulous music will now be relegated to the digital airwaves for download to computers, iPods, cell phones, and so on. Keep the music you love on CDs - they don't have subscriptions that run out, batteries that fail, and don't get stolen so someone can make calls on your cell phone...
About the pieces included on both releases: they were recorded in the 1950's during the swift rise of Kogan's astounding international career. The album is mostly about him, although on some tracks he is joined by other Russian greats. Our favorite on this album is the charming Gragnani (Graniani)"DUET FOR GUITAR AND VIOLIN" with guitarist Alexander Mikhailovich Ivanov-Kramskoy (1912-1973), a great artist, composer and teacher. He is a must-have for a well-rounded classical guitar collection.

"F. GRAGNANI, N. PAGANINI, M. GIULIANI" (Melodiya, 2000) with Leonid Kogan and Alexander Ivanov-Kramskoy, and cellist Feodor Luzanov, recorded from 1950-1951. We hunted it down after a single public radio hearing of Giuliani's "Trio in A for Violin, Cello & Guitar". We listen to it almost every day, and probably will for years to come.
