ForeignLander ReviewI first discovered Lydia McCauley at one of her concerts in my and her home city of Bellingham, Washington. She is a singer and keyboardist who "owns" both Irish and Appalachian music genres.
Lydia McCauley has an enchanting voice and performs true-to-the-tradition of the music genre.
Irish music ranges in performance from the robust Michael Flatley music-and-dance extravaganzas to the 50-or-more performers who comprise Celtic Woman in concerts and on CD. Lydia McCauley, instead, caresses Irish ballads.
She is not yet a "discovered" singer and keyboardist, but really should be.
This CD presentation combines the Irish charm in music in her vocals and, for the first time of any of her CDs, grants equal performance time to her fine musicians.
I have purchased all of her CDs and this is the one that demands to be listened to and enjoyed ten or more times each month.
This is a remarkable and most enjoyable CD, even if you're not already a fan of Irish music.Len

ForeignLander OverviewCAPTIVATING MUSIC FROM THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINSThey came across the ocean from the British Isles. They sang the songs of their homeland in a new country. They lived, loved, and died here. This is the music of the ForeignLander.Lydia McCauley documented folk music at the prestigious Appalachian Music Archive in Berea, Kentucky in the early 1980's and studied with some of the best folk musicians in the Appalachian region.Known today as a songwriter, McCauley returns to her roots in her fifth album, ForeignLander; a collection of innovatively arranged pieces from 17-20th Century Appalachia, beautifully performed by McCauley and her touring Ensemble, along with special guests.While careful to preserve Appalachian traditions in this album, Lydia creates a fresh and contemporary sound that pleases both traditional and progressive music audiences.Selections include: One Morning in May, Pretty Saro, The River Trilogy (arranged by producer Kurt Scherer), Barbara Allan and Stella (two favorite live performance pieces), a haunting version of Lover's Lament, and Swallow's Return, a joyful instrumental composed by L. McCauley.
