Pepe Romero: Recuerdos de la Alhambra / Jeux Interdits / Asturias ReviewThis is a wonderful collection of Spanish guitar standards, nicely programmed and performed - Romero's playing is nothing short of virtuosic. Comparing Pepe Romero's version of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on this album to John Williams Greatest Hits (1974) version, it is clear that Romero is a true virtuoso of the guitar. That is not a put down on Williams, who is one of the most gifted players around. Rather it is a testament to the talent of Romero. In Williams' rendition of the aforementioned Tarrega standard, you can hear him putting his all into the performance - at times he borders on over-playing. Romero, on the other hand, seems totally at ease with the piece. You get the sense that for Romero, the guitar is a tool he has total mastery of.
