Duran Duran (The Wedding Album) ReviewDuran Duran bombed quietly with 1990's "Liberty" and then disappeared for three years, leading many to think their careers ended with the Eighties. So everyone was shocked when in 1993 they stormed back to the top of the pop charts. Their comeback success was deserved: "The Wedding Album" is Duran Duran's most colourful, dynamic and diverse offering, and ranks with 1982's "Rio" as one of their best.
I can't quite describe my feelings upon hearing the dreamy, soaring ballad "Ordinary World" for the first time in early 1993. It was like an old friend had returned after an absence of many years. Over ten years later, this first single from "The Wedding Album" retains all its anthemic power.
And then a funny thing happened: the second single, "Come Undone," was just as good! For the first time in nearly ten years, Duran Duran had two hit singles from the same album. The comeback was complete.
Fortunately "The Wedding Album" is more than just a "singles" album. As they did with "Notorious" (1986) and "Big Thing" (1988), Duran Duran continues to break new musical ground. Standout tracks include the Latin-tinged Milton Nascimento collaboration, "Breath After Breath," the Prince-style funk of "U.M.F.," and the hip-hop/ambient fusion of "Come Undone" and "Love Voodoo." More than just experiments, these songs are thoughtful compositions that successfully synthesize diverse genres with Duran's inimitable melodic sensibilities.
A minor complaint about "The Wedding Album" is that the weakest tracks, "Drowning Man" and "Shotgun," appear early on, disrupting the record's consistency. But the album quickly recovers with "Come Undone" and never looks back. "The Wedding Album" ends with a bang: the incendiary "Sin of the City," an epic tune about the tragic Happyland dance club fire, is an angry and passionate statement about urban exploitation. It's a scathing social comment that dispels the notion of Duran Duran as self-absorbed pretty boys.
More than merely a commercial comeback, "The Wedding Album" reaffirms Duran Duran's place among the premier pop bands of their generation. Siamese Dream ReviewI have not been on the Smashing Pumpkins bandwagon for long. I missed the albums when they first hit; hell, the first song I heard by them was "Tonight, Tonight" from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Needless to say, I had some catching up to do. Thankfully, that catching up included listening to this album, which I now consider a seminal/pivotal/simply amazing point in rock history. Billy Corgan does away with pretension by twisting it into glorious rock anthems and beautiful alt-pop. The kicker is that, while people wrote them off as depressionists, almost every moment on this CD can be compared with euphoric joy. Even in moments of rage, the beauty of the music shines through. Straight-out rockers such as "Geek U.S.A." and "Quiet" are singular yet grand in their guitar riffs, creating a near-primal feeling. Softer numbers such as "Spaceboy", "Disarm", and "Mayonaise" cause reflection and introspection on the listener's part, creating a more balanced record. The true killers on this album, though, are "Today' and "Soma". The first is the most melodic alternative rock ever written, while the second is the most sobering alt-rock ever written. In closing, while the Pumpkins may not be sure who they are anymore, I'll always love them for who they were.Siamese Dream OverviewDigitally remastered edition of this 1993 album from the Alt-Rock band led by Billy Corgan. This is definately a must have single for any Toni Braxton fan or club fanatic! this is part 2 of a 2 cd set. A rare limited one pressing CD maxi single released only in Australia. The mixes are superb and are guaranteed to keep you dancing all night & into the morning. The first remix (Mousse T's Extended Mix) kind of has a disco/retro feeling to it kind of taking you back in time. Mousse T's Deep Vocal Mix is currently the type of song you would hear playing in a club late at night, definately a great mix. The HQ2 Club Mix (Hex Hector & Mac Quayle) is the best remix on this CD quite possible one of the hottest dance tracks of the year! this song made it to #1 on the dance hot 100 billboard charts for 2 weeks so that says enough. They turned this ballad into an amazing latin filled dance anthem! I love how they added the extra Spanish Guitar's in the background. The Eifel 65 Extended mix is different from their previous mixes no distorted vocals just a plain solid dance track however it's definately below standards compared to the other 3 mixes. Also make sure you check out "Spanish Guitar" part 1 of the 2 CD set. It contains all these remixes (all radio edits though) in exception to one extra track which is the Royal Gardens Flamenco Radio mix. James Galway - Dances for Flute ReviewThis is one of a number of cd's bought for my wife (an avid flute lover) which have turned out to be among my favorites.
Galway plays with his normal crispness and energy, but here some unusual pieces one doesn't hear often. The two Khachaturian songs are haunting and the Belfast Hornpipe is so neat!
