Elvis: '68 Comeback (1968) ReviewThis DVD has just the basics of Elvis' excellent 1968 special. If you want an in-depth presentation, you should get the 2 DVD Deluxe edition. This DVD includes nearly all of the footage of the original show. Elvis' performances are outstanding, especially the "informal" jam session, where Elvis actually plays his guitar instead of just using it as a prop! Elvis' informal jam session was an early precursor of the MTV Unplugged series that would follow more than 20 years later. The bonus material includes some outtakes and photos, but really does not add much to the set. This DVD should be enough for the average fan and it is available at a reasonable price. Hardcore fans will want the deluxe edition.Elvis: '68 Comeback (1968) Overview

G.I. Blues (Widescreen) (1960) Review"G.I. Blues" was #2 on the top grossing films at the box office when it was released. The storyline is Elvis plays Tulsa MacLean. Him and his Army buddies are about to get out of the army and look forward to opening up their own nightclub back in Oklahoma. Along the way, Tulsa is caught up in a bet that sees if he can date the enticing and cold-as-ice Cafe Europa dancer Lili (Juliet Prowse). Tulsa and Lili go further than that: they take a modest cruise to across the river to a puppet show where Tulsa sings "Wooden Heart". They both ride above a vineyard in a cablecar where again he breaks into "Pocketful of Rainbows." Then Tulsa is asked to baby-sit for a buddy who ran away to get married, and he's caught in a tight situation. Him and Lili reunite and spend the night with each other baby-sitting "Tiger". The bet is easily won. When Lili finds out, she's steamed! Little does she know that Tulsa really was Marla and Rick's baby-sitter. Tulsa and Lili come back together after an unexpected proposal, and following is an all-American Armed Forces Show finale where Tulsa and the rest of the memebers of the armed forces sing "Did'ja Ever?".G.I. Blues (Widescreen) (1960) OverviewStationed in Germany, Army specialist Tulsa McLean (Elvis) and his buddies are saving up to open a nightclub after they get discharged. To build their seed money faster, they make a wager that one of their own can seduce a sexy, hard-to-get cabaret dancer (Juliet Prowse). But when their chosen Romeo gets transferred to Alaska, Tulsa must step in to melt her heart, win the bet and save their dream. He's ready to rise to the challenge . . . but the last thing he expects is to fall in love.

Tomorrow Is a Long Time ReviewNon-soundtrack recordings made between 66 and 68, these sides show that Elvis' 68 Comeback was inevitable. Jerry Reed gives Elvis 2 of his best songs "Guitar Man" and "U.S. Male" and the King knocks 'em out of the park. His cover of the Clovers "Down In The Alley" from 1966 is tough R&B. Also, check out his version of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is A Long Time". A great performance. Yes, the man could do it all. So, while he was still making bad movies, these Nashville sides are proof that the King was on the verge of Rock and Roll's greatest comeback. His voice sounds great, the songs on this CD are generally good (a few too many remakes of other artist's hits), and you can just feel him committed to making great music again. Which he would.Tomorrow Is a Long Time OverviewThese 1966-1968 recordings have never been grouped together, so chalk this up as another album that should have been, but wasn't-until now! His hits Love Letters; Big Boss Man; U.S. Male , and Indescribably Blue are here with the Bob Dylan-penned title song and 13 more tracks!

The Passion of the Christ: Songs Inspired By ReviewWhen I first saw this CD I thought it was a strange marketing tie-in to Mel Gibson's film "The Passion", but on reading Gibson's liner notes, it becomes clear why this selection of marvelous music was brought together; it is music that has inspired Mr. Gibson, and that in some way is connected to the Passion message. It is an eclectic mix, all performed with first-rate musicianship and creative quality. Some of the tracks have been recently recorded, but some have been around for years.
Some of my favorites:
The sparse beauty and whispered simplicity of Holly Williams singing her grandfather Hank's "How Can You Refuse Him Now" ~
Ricky Scaggs' "Are You Afraid to Die", with an intro by Dr. Billy Graham is poignant and shows the deep and pure roots of country music ~
Jessi Colter & Shooter Jennings with "Please Carry me Home". Two wonderful voices with a heartfelt rendition of their own song ~
Dolores O'Riordan (lead singer of The Cranberries) is astounding with her rendition of "Ave Maria" ~
The Ghost Who Walks with "Harm's Way" is one of the artists on this CD that I had never heard of before, and am grateful for the "discovery" ~
Leonard Cohen's "By the Rivers Dark" is gorgeous...Cohen at his mystical best ~
The Blind Boys of Alabama's "Precious Lord" is soul-stirring with its plaintive, expressive voice and guitar ~
Bob Dylan's powerful "Not Dark Yet" is a fitting finale.
There isn't a single track on this recording that I do not care for...it is a truly great collection, with a slant towards a country-funky style, with overall leisurely tempos and a mellow feeling.
It is a lovely CD on many levels; as a musical spiritual journey, as well as an example of artistic excellence. The only lyrics included are "How Can You Refuse Him Now", sound for the most part is good and total playing time is 51'37.The Passion of the Christ: Songs Inspired By Overview

a Guitar for Elvis ReviewMusic lovers across the board will want Elvis in their house with this CD. Are you ready to be swept up and dropped into a different space with each awesome and unique arrangement of these Elvis classics? This CD will take you everywhere. Starting out with pure fun from Pat Donohue on "All Shook Up" and moving into the first of two tunes by Al Petteway. Al never fails to please and will have you loving "Mystery Train" and a version of "Hound Dog" that will have you up and out of your seat! You want amazing melodies....when you hear Doug Smith play "Can't Help Falling in Love" he will have you absolutely wrapped up in his version of this classic. Of all the thousands of times this song has been covered, don't be surprised to find this your favorite, even without the lyrics!! Other wonderful melodic tunes include "Love Me Tender", beautifully done by Brooks Williams and "Are You Lonesome Tonight", with a folksy little feel from Jim Tozier. What's not to love about Laurence Juber and his amazing fingerstyle? Check out his always pleasing grooves on "Suspicious Minds", a definite highlight of the CD. There are fantastic takes on "Don't" by Tim Pacheco, "Loving You" by Elliot Easton, and Mike Dowling moves on "Little Sister"! The famous classical guitarist, Benjamin Verdery will surprise and delight you with a very unclassical version of "Don't Be Cruel". By the time this CD is nearing the end, you will be up and dancing around when you hear "Jailhouse Rock" by ace fingerpicker Eltjo Haselhoff and the best saved for last....the dynamic duo of Doug Smith and Mark Hanson will have you soaring and singing "Viva Las Vegas"!! By time this CD is over you'll want to start it right up again!! So much fun. James Jensen of Solid Air Records and Acoustic Music Resource have done it again with one of the best yet special compilation projects. Thanks guys!!a Guitar for Elvis Overview
