Trouble ReviewRay Lamontagne, a new name in the market, and an image of a great singer/songwriter is what we have here. A true find, a voice like no others. He has been compared to Otis Redding, Van Morrison and David Grey, However, Ray has a voice of his own, sometimes gravelly, always luscious. His first CD "Trouble" is bound to be a great one. The lyrics alone are enough to bring in accolades, but his voice and the music behind him, guitar, piano, harmonica and bass are all he needs. This is one to be remembered.
Ray Lamontagne spent most of his life moving around with his family, but found himself settled in Maine. He says he was an "oddball", always in trouble and hated school. He and his mom would have fights about his education. He finally made it through high school, just barely. He was working in a shoe mill in a small Maine town, when he woke up one morning to a tune on the radio that resonated in his head. He suddenly realized "This is what I am meant to be doing, singing and songwriting". He never went back to the mill. He set out to find his true vocation. He was found by the people he needed to meet and made this CD in California. Now Ray Lamontagne is touring all over the world, bringing his voice and music to us. I first saw/heard him on Conan O'Brien singing the title song, "Trouble". His voice has a mesmerizing quality that resounds with true vitality.
Ray writes and sings his own songs. "Trouble" is my favorite song with "All the Wild Horses" a close second. However, each song has a place of its own. Ray Lamontagne has given us a CD that begs to be listened to over and over again. Each time you pick up another sound, another lyric you might have missed before, that puts the pieces of this CD together.
A cold winter's night with a fire in the stove, kicking leaves on a frosty autumn day, or sitting in the sunshine on a spring day when the air is fresh and clean are some of the best times to listen to this CD, but, in reality, there isn't a bad time to listen. Love this singer/songwriter, Ray Lamontagne. Whole heartedly recommended. prisrob

Heavy Metal Jam Tracks for Guitarists ReviewHeavy Metal Jam Track contains ten rhythm tracks that are designed for guitarists to jam to. The goal is to stimulate improvisation and generally improve playing skills.
Tracks are in different keys, and vary in tempo and style. Each track is about four minutes long, which probably more than adequate for exploring and improvising in that particular key. Your comfort level should increase as you become more familiar with the pattern of the music.
Sound quality of the tracks is good, and the tone is similar to `real' heavy metal. The mix is full and even. The drums are not way in the back, but are not obtrusive or distracting. The tempos are reminiscent of late 80's style metal. There are fast, mid tempo and slow bluesy tracks. The music is hard to categorize, but there is a generally a dark feel to most the tracks. Perhaps bands like Accept, Metallica, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath might serve as references. No pop metal. No speed metal tempos like Testament's Practice What You Preach.
Breaking out of a rut, expanding creativity, and rising above musical plateaus are common challenges that many musicians face. Depending on your level of skill, and your approach to playing, this product could be helpful in stimulating those creative juices.

Romantic French Music for Guitar and Orchestra ReviewHere excellent Naxos guitarist Gerald Garcia (check out his "Latin American Guitar Festival" and "Brazilian Portrait" CDs) teams up with conductor/arranger Peter Breiner to produce a highly enjoyable collection of music for guitar and orchestra.
Here Breiner takes some of the best known piano works of Debussy and Satie, plus some items from Faure's orchestral output, and presents them in lush original arrangements for guitar and orchestra. The arrangements work best when they are simple. On a few they're a bit over the top, and for that the recording loses one star, but for the most part Breiner provides fine backings for Garcia's beautiful and sensitive playing.
Highlights include the two Satie "Gymnopedies", Debussy's "Le Fille Auz Cheveux de lin", "Arabesque", and "Reverie", and Faure's "Pavane" and "Sicilienne": all beautifully played and arranged.
An original idea, nicely executed with only one or two questionable moments. Should appeal to fans of classical guitar and French classical music.Romantic French Music for Guitar and Orchestra Overview

Dan In Real Life (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) ReviewOnce again, Sondre Lerche wields his incredible talent in crafting this quirky (without being annoying), moving (without the melodrama), and just plain charming (without being trite) soundtrack.
Sondre fans will recognize "Airport Taxi Reception" and "Modern Nature" from previous albums, but it's the songs originally written for the film that stand out the most. "To Be Surprised" (my personal favorite) is folksy and inspiring, with simple, elegant lyrics and Lerche bringing his trademark falsetto to bear. "I'll Be OK" and "My Hands Are Shaking" are melancholy laments that don't weigh themselves down with affected angst. "Hell No" is a charming, jazzy number with ethereal Regina Spektor that features a witty call-and-response.
The Pete Townsend classic, "Let My Love Open the Door" and Elvis Costello's "Human Hands," fair pleasantly enough in Sondre's more-than-capable hands (the former of which involves an interesting strings accompaniment). Many critics have faulted A Fine Franzy's take on "Fever" as being the album's Achilles Heel, but Alison Sudol does a decent enough turn if not exactly an original one. Her rich voice is perfect for singing this classic Fitzgerald number and if she doesn't add anything particularly different, she certainly doesn't take anything away.
The unpolished edges give this soundtrack an emotional sincerity that perfectly fits in with the understated sentiments of the film. And while some may consider Lerche's lyrics as one of his few weaknesses, they have never lacked in honesty if not logical sense.
Peter Hedges has made a delightful film and Sondre's contribution is part of that. But in addition to making for a great film, it's also a great album to listen to on its own.Dan In Real Life (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Overview

In Palm Court Style / Viveza ReviewI saw this album on display at a record store in Vancouver several years ago, and, on a whim, decided to buy it. It greatly exceeded my expectations. The arrangements are creative and imaginative; the playing, superb. Lively tangos are mixed with light classics and operetta. I have subsequently bought other discs with "salon" music that are quite enjoyable, but they do not seem to show the inventiveness of Viveza. Regrettably this disc and its equally enjoyable sequel, Viveza Encore, are out of print. I am waiting for a new disc by the same group, which is expected to appear this year. I listen to alot of blues CD's and host a blues radio show so I like to think I know what I'm talking about. This is an impressive CD. Scott Johnson: John Somebody ReviewWhile I don't disagree that this is a product of its time (and place), 25 years later I don't listen to David Van Tieghem or Laurie Anderson. I still listen to this. I love the first piece most of all, which starts with something completely unmusical, a snatch of conversation, and then uncovers a vivid and memorable melody that's hidden within it. It's striking to me how little a piece that's comprised almost entirely of technically aggressive electric guitar riffs sounds anything like rock and roll music. And it's also striking to me how, despite the piece's obvious deep roots in minimalism, it is the very opposite of minimal. Good Thing ReviewI was recently turned on to this band by a lady friend in Los Angeles who has had the opportunity to see them play a number of times. When she described their music to me, I looked them up on this site and ordered a CD to check them out.
Tight and funky, Michael John and the Bottom Line play the kind of hard-driving jive honky blues typified by earlier bands like the Nighthawks, the Siegel-Schwall Band and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. They are the kind of band that could fill a nightclub in a hip town night after night. They are the kind of band I always liked to see in my salad days when out for a night of drinking and dancing.
Lead vocalist Michael John has a voice quite suited to the genre and every member of the band has his chance to shine. Particularly impressive is the sax work of Eddie Zelaznik and also the keyboards of Harlan Spector. My favorites are Dirty Tricks, Understanding Woman, All Hell's Cutting Loose, and You Can, You Can. My least favorites are Angel Muffin and It's A Good Thing. Though they are eminently danceable, the lyrics are predictably cheesy and lame.
Don't look for any hard-core blues here. This music is good-time music and should appeal to quite a wide audience if the band ever breaks out of Southern California. I recommend this to the casual blues lover and to anyone who likes to dance as a good antidote to the typical garbage heard in dance clubs. AND, I'm looking forward to the band's next CD!Good Thing Overview13 incredible blues tracks, strong powerful vocals and a smoking band makes this CD a must have for any blues lover. The music is passionate and has heartfelt original songs. These guys are smoking..screaming guitar, punchy sax and a lot of fun.

Celebration of Blues: Great Slide Guitar ReviewGreat compilation of different types of slide players. Acoustic and electric. No contemporary slide album can be considered without Johnny Winter. He starts it off and all of the artists keep it going. I've bought albums by all the artists on it (except it's tough to find Paul James Band cd's) and all of them have top-notch albums - haven't been disappointed by any of it. TOO BLUE ReviewIt's called "Too Blue," and I must say, it is awesome. I was literally blown away. Such a range of different styles: city blues, country blues, jazz, pop, rock, skat...it's all there. The whole record has a groove thang goin' on that's impossible to resist.
The songs range from funny to sad, from the gravelly voiced "Gumbo," "Sweet Love," and the playful blues crooning of "Big Gorilla Blues," to the wistful lyrical and acoustic jazz guitar brilliance of "Come What May," "Your Lies," and "Bend in the River." Even the sad songs have the sense of humor of someone who has truly lived the blues, but will never take himself that seriously.
The writing and composition on the 16 gems inside "Two Blue" reflect a mature creativity--a quality seemingly in short supply these days. But Smith's guitar work needs a few words here also. It is masterful, throughout the spectrum of styles on this CD. It will raise the little hairs on the back of your neck, and make your arms shiver with goose pimples. This cat can play.
Comparisons are odious, but his songs bring to mind a modern day Cole Porter, or Randy Newman's more talented brother. I can imagine Billie Holliday covering many of these tracks. It is truly one of the most original, imaginative recordings I have heard in a long, long time. I plan to buy more to send to my special friends. It's an absolute Ace.
I am so lucky to have stumbled across this jewel of original American music.TOO BLUE OverviewHighly original blues and jazz mix with emotional content from angst to hope.

California ReviewKinda shocked that I'm the only one to review this great cd by one very talented singer-songwriter. It's a heavy burden for someone about to go to sleep to summon up the just the right superlatives that will get you to order this, so I'm going to punt and just say I've listened to this countless times and I never tire of it. There's a plaintive quality to Barbara's voice that I just love, and her songs--both music AND lyrics--are great,too, as are the session musicians. You will not be disappointed.California Overview
