Baroque at Bathtime: A Relaxing Serenade to Wash Your Cares Away ReviewIncredibly beautiful! that's what everyone says after hearing this album. Here are the comments of the document going with the CD. And it is true! Here is an excellent compilation of famous arias played with solo of guitar, oboe, violin,flute.... with chamber orchestra driven by Leppard or Marriner which makes it even more attractive... Interesting to note the transcription of the Bach's harpsichord concerto in oboe by Heinz Holliger. This artist is phenomenal and we may appreciate his large contribution to this record as an added gift. Also the two concerto extraits by Gheorge Zamfir are magnificent with the panpipes. We can highly recommend this record for people who love beautiful classical music, played with top class artists and for relaxing everyday! By the way this collection by Philips seems quite an achievement for its selection and quality of sound. The Bells of St. Genevieve and Other Baroque Delights Review"The Bells of St. Genevieve" is a compilation of Baroque pieces that would serve as an excellent introduction for someone who would like to hear more of the Baroque style beyond "Spring" from "The Four Seasons" or "Canon" by Pachelbel. Granted, this cd does contain "Canon" (what Baroque compilation could resist including it), but it doesn't stop there.
I'm not an expert when it comes to Baroque music, but I am something beyond a beginner; I guess I'd consider myself a moderately knowledgable amateur. However, before purchasing this album, I had never heard the title piece, "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba," or track # 10 "Guitar Concerto" by Vivaldi. Some of the other tracks were familiar but not well-known to me. I was also pleased to see the inclusion of the turbulent Presto from "Summer" instead of the ubiquitous "Spring."
Compilations are often quite useful in helping neophytes get a better understanding and appreciation for classical music (I know they've helped me over the years). Not all compilations are a good mix or contain decent recordings; many seem like carbon copies of each other. This one, however, has good sound quality and great recordings from the likes of James Galway, Pinchas Zukerman, Canadian Brass, and James Levine.
I recommend this album to anyone wishing to branch out a bit in Baroque music but who is not sure where to start. I've discovered new favorites from listening to this album.The Bells of St. Genevieve and Other Baroque Delights Overview

Parkening performs them with stunning technique without ever sacrificing warmth. I'd like to add that this CD also has great sound quality when compared to the CD's of other older masters such as Bream or Segovia which sometimes have considerable hiss. Centenary Celebration ReviewSegovia was and always will be The Maestro. He was, as other reviewers say, the pioneer of modern classical guitar. To say that he has been somehow surpassed and passed by, as one previous reviewer seems to think is pure rubbish. To say that others have followed in his footsteps and become greats as well, is fact.
Music is always open to interpretation. Segovia was a great player and to understand the history of the classical guitar one must have listened to Segovia. He created the yardstick by which others are now measured.
This set not only includes great works played by the Maestro, it also includes Segovia speaking of his own life with the guitar. It is worth having along with other, more modern, gifted players such as Williams, Bream, Parkening and others who followed in the Maestro's footsteps.Centenary Celebration Overview
