Jimi Hendrix-The Guitar Hero: Classic Artists (2010) ReviewThis dvd is a true homage to the man born Johnny Allen Hendrix, whose father, upon returning home from WWII, legally changed his firstborn son's name to James Marshall Hendrix, who was called Buster by his family, and who was known to all the world as Jimi Hendrix. What makes this homage dvd so great are all the stories from all the really great people who actually knew Jimi during his short life. The dvd begins in 1966 with Jimi Hendrix in England, where he first drew the attention of the world on himself with his first hit single, HEY JOE. It was here in London that a mere 3 people- Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) on his fender stratocaster, Noel Redding (1945-2003) on bass and Mitch Mitchell (1946-2008) on drums filled the world with a new sound that blew us all away back then.
After the dvd tells us stories of the great music of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, it then turns back the clock to the beginning of Jimi's life in Seattle, Washington. This is where Jimi's poverty and broken family life began, with a father named James Allen (Al) Hendrix in the service in WWII and a 17 year old mother named Lucille Jeter Hendrix alone in the States who named the baby after her old boyfriend Johnny and husband Allen. She was alone when she gave birth to baby Johnny the day after Thanksgiving on November 27, 1942. When Jimi's father came home after the war in 1945, he immediately changed 3 year old Johnny's name to James Marshall Hendrix, after himself and his brother Marshall. Johnny was now Jimmy and in the confusion, little Jimmy changed his own name to Buster, after Buster Crabbe, whom he loved from The Flash Gordon Films he saw at the local theatre.
The dvd then takes us through Jimi's life through fascinating and wonderful stories from the following: LEON HENDRIX-Jimi's brother, whose touching stories of their early years totally make this dvd!; SLASH-of Guns N Roses, does a fabulous job narrating with commentaries; ERIC CLAPTON; MICKEY DOLENZ of The Monkees; ERIC BURDON of The Animals; MICK TAYLOR of The Rolling Stones; ZOOT MONEY-keyboard player; KATHY ETCHINGHAM-Jimi's ex-girlfriend; CHARLES CROSS-author; BEN PALMER-Cream road manager; DAVE MASON-guitarist, did All Along The Watchtower with Jimi; ALAN WHITE-drummer from Yes; JON BREWER-film maker; CHRIS SQUIRE-bass player from Yes; JOEY COVINGTON-drummer from Jefferson Airplane; GINGER BAKER-drummer for Cream; LEMMY KILMINSTER-Motorhead; ALAN DOUGLAS-record producer; PAUL RODGERS-singer for Free and Bad Co.; STEPHEN STILLS; HENRY DILTZ-rock photographer; BEV BEVAM-drummer from ELO; and many more.
The personal stories all these heavyweights in Rock tell of their time spent with Jimi are worth their weight in gold, but it's Jimi's brother Leon who sheds the most light on Jimi's life. Leon shares the most touching stories from their childhood and of Jimi's early career before he became known worldwide in England. This dvd would be tremendous with just the stories alone, but there are fabulous old film clips of the places Jimi played at, bought his clothes at, where he lived, that just add to the story of his life in beautiful full color. Going back in time on film to the Whiskey A Go Go, Ronnie Scotts, The World's End, Granny Takes A Trip, Bag Of Nails, Olympia, the Chelsea Market, Marquee Club, Portabello Road and so many other great sixties clubs, shops and places is a fantastic delightful journey in itself! Then there are the fabulous photographs that just add so much to Jimi's personal life! This dvd covers Jimi's life, like nothing I've ever seen or read and I believe it's because of the close personal stories from his family, girlfriend, friends and bandmates. It is simply beyond tremendous!
When I first heard The Jimi Hendrix Experience on the radio in 1967, I didn't know that this was a Seattle guitarist, who was shunned here in the States- especially in the South where they wouldn't even serve him food, became a success in England with 2 English musicians, then came back to the States to blow us all away with his performance at The Monterey Pop Festival, the only thing I knew, was HOW DOES HE MAKE THAT SOUND? Back in the late sixties, we only knew that here was a young musician who played like no one else on the planet. Jimi filled ever inch of space with sounds that seemed to go on forever! I now know that this gifted genius musician played his strat upside down, backwards, restrung for left handed playing with his fuzz box and the biggest Marshall Amps that would fill every bit of space, which no one to this day could ever come close to duplicate!
The almost 2 hours of this dvd are completely filled with everything you would like to know about Jimi Hendrix, and added to that are the following Special Features: Henry Diltz's 8mm silent film The Monkees; Black and White Film of Jimi Hendrix Experience at The Marquee playing HEY JOE, his first big hit; Extended Interviews- MORE great stories from his brother Leon and others!; 2 Photo Galleries and also included as a bonus is a 20 page booklet that features some great old photos and concert posters.
On September 18, 1970, we heard the news that Jimi Hendrix was dead in England at the young age of 27. We were sad and shocked that drugs took away this rare guitar genius. We started hearing stories that his manager may have had him killed, as Jimi was about to fire him. Stories always abound on a wealthy, young or famous person's death. We didn't know if it was murder, suicide or an accidental drug overdose. After seeing this film, I listened to Eric Burdon tell the story of finding the note Jimi left in his room, after his death. It's words are also on his Grave Monument in Seattle:
The story of life is quicker
Than the wink of an eye
The story of love is hello and goodbye
Until we meet again.
To me, this is definitely a farewell note. This dvd is a solid 5 stars and you will feel what it was like to know Jimi Hendrix firsthand through all the great people who have their Jimi stories to share with all of us Jimi Hendrix fans!
