Songs of the Guitar ReviewSongs of the Guitar by John Lehmann-Haupt accomplishes what many have aspired to but few have achieved. This offering by one of my very favorite New York guitarists melds many musical tastes coherently so that one hears nothing but the inherent beauty of the guitar, the greatness of this music and the genius behind the arranging and playing. Without a hint of pretence Mr. Lehmann-Haupt welcomes the opportunity to provide great arrangements of tunes by Bonfa, Jobim, Monk, Gershwin and Bernstein among others alongside traditional songs and traditional classical guitar repertoire by Haydn, Albeniz, Villa-Lobos and Tarrega. The CD opens with an arrangement of Ashokan Farewell from The Civil War that simply sings with the sincerity and masterful caring for each note that you will find throughout the rest of the program. You will discover in the second track of a Minuet and Trio by Haydn that John Lehmann-Haupt possesses a Segovia-like sensibility. It is likely this gives the rest of the CD such strength and depth across the genres. Obviously, John Lehmann-Haupt has the added advantage of experiencing jazz and popular music idiomatically and conveys this with great integrity. Really mastering the guitar acoustically gives his arrangements a true satisfaction. There are no gimmicks, only real solid music. In the famous Manha De Carnaval he executes a completely unaffected joy in a fantastic solo that has all the spontaneity and electricity of being improvised. In a club we would be cheering.
