Great Masters of Flamenco, Vol. 3 ReviewUniversally considered the greatest female cante of the 20th century, that of Pastora Pavón (1890-1969) sometimes surprises those hearing it for the first time with its harshness and somewhat nasal quality (reportedly, this was an effect of age); but there is no missing its emotive power, or its total mastery. Much of it was learned from the legendary Manuel Torre, the lover of her youth, and much from other major 19th century singers whose cante would have been lost had she not perpetuated it.The recording is ropy by modern standards, but this is pure flamenco history -- especially as the guitarists are Melchor de Marchena, Manolo de Badajoz and Niño Ricardo!
