All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites ReviewThese sevillanas are just great and its amazing to me that they are not heard much. Maybe because, in spite of the great listening and the flamenco action that is heard, you are left out of the visual action. Not being a native speaker of the language, having the spanish lyrics to the music would greatly enhance the enjoyment. I've tried to find lyrics on the net, and even tried to purchase lyrics from the distributor Madacy, all without success. All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites Overview

Solo Para Ti ReviewOttmar Liebert plays a very good guitar and he wants to share his expertise with a global audience. His music is truly beautiful and very relaxing. When listening to this CD you can partake in just about any activity. If you like to read or have creative endevors this is perfect music that stimulates but does not demand your complete attention. The songs for the most part are very mellow. Lush and lyrical the arraignments are a sophisticated blend of pop flamenco that works. There is an intersting version of the "Marvin Gaye's" classic "Mercy, Mercy, Me". The difference here is that it is sung in Spanish in a flamenco style that would make the deceased Motown artist proud. Lots of good tunes here, with a variety of tempos to keep your interest. One of Lieberts better efforts that he has released over the years, this CD has withstood the test of time. Released in 1992, the fine instrumentation keeps it alive. A highlight from this CD is the duet with Carlos Santana which I never get tired of. The song is 'Samba Pa Ti", originally penned and made famous by Santana. The different arraignment makes it hardly recognizeable as Liebert has taken creative freedom to make something new. The music is enchanting and bordering on mystical inspiration. An excellent addition to any complete collection of nuevo flamenco.Solo Para Ti Overview

Flamenco Arabe ReviewThis album is a collaboration between Hossam Ramzy and Rafa El Tachuela who is a flamenco musician whose compositions focus on exploring the roots and origins of flamenco. This album is a fabulous fusion of musical styles and instruments by top class musicians. The liner notes in this album are very helpful, it contains short, informative biographies for both Hossam Ramzy and Rafa El Tachuela as well as for Said Kamal (Egyptian violin) and Mohamed Naiem (nay and kawala). Each song title has been translated into English, German, French & Spanish and for each song there are helpful notes on the influences that make up each composition here. In May 2003, I was lucky enough to be able to go along to the Purcell Rooms at the Royal Festival hall on London's South Bank to see Hossam Ramzy and some of the musicians who recorded this album play live. It was incredible to see and hear how all the different instruments and sounds from different countries and cultures could blend so harmoniously all together on stage to produce such an amazing sound. If you ever get a chance to listen to live Arabic music, never turn it down, it's amazing! This album explores the connection between the music of Andalusia (the region of Southern Spain) and that of the Arab world. This is an album I wasn't sure about before I listened to, but I had the most wonderful surprise when I played it for the first time. Track 1 "Al Quantara" begins with a very spiritually moving piece of Arabian flute - it took me by the hand and led right to the heart of this album. I particularly liked this track with the way combined with Spanish guitar with the Egyptian violin and flutes and was still beautifully structured and from that point on I was totally captivated by this album and the way all the instruments and styles fused together so harmoniously. This track would make a very interesting performance piece for more advanced dancers looking for a challenge in their oriental dance skills. Track 2 "Ahalm Ghernatah" is also very nicely structured; I really love the way the instruments meld together in this piece, in particular I liked the way the violin and the qanun fused together and then the way the violin fused with the nay, then the tabla; this might be a good tracks for intermediates to experiment with. Track 3 "Al Vuelo" is an interesting, powerful piece that combines the Spanish guitar with handclapping, I really liked the way the music flowed in this piece; it does have a certain flavour and style all of it's own and would again make a challenging piece for more advanced dancers to work with. Track 4 "Rumbapa" is based on the Arab Malfuf rhythm - this might be an easier track for less experienced dancers who are looking to create an original choreography to work with as the Malfuf rhythm is steady all the way through the track and the structure of the music is less complex. Track 5 "Rafaga De Viento" is more musically complex and again would be a challenge for the more advanced dancer. Track 6 "Kebeira Samet" is based around the Arab Masmoudi rhythm and is more simply structured; this combined with the fact that it has a slower tempo and the Arabian flute, the violin and the guitar all take it in turns playing solo makes this could make this song an interesting beginner's choreography or it would make an excellent teaching piece for getting to know the Masmoudi rhythm and for learning to how to follow the sounds of each instrument. "El Amor Perdido" is a slower paced track with a more melancholy feeling; I love the slight echo the violin seems to have on this track is and this another lovely piece to practice moving and getting your body to flow to the music with. "Men El Balad" starts with another hauntingly beautiful nay solo introduction and then goes into one of my favourite rhythms - Saidi. I like this track a lot and it would make an excellent beginners performance piece that will give their choreographies an original twist. "Zambra Por Nadejda" is slower paced and has that quintessential Spanish flavour and is just beautiful to concentrate on the notes played and just feel every note move your body. One of my favourite tracks on this album is the wonderful "Silk Route Suite" that is divided into four sections - "Kathak" from North India (the tabla in this piece really is just awesome - it seems to "sing" with a voice of it's own as just as much as the vocals); we then visit Egypt in "Egyptian" part b we hear the rhythm "Sarabant" and get a real sense of the influence Indian music had on Egyptian musicians - this part alone would make a wonderfully original performance piece for beginners or intermediates. We the move onto Andalusia with "Sol y Sal", this is a challenging flamenco piece and finally we end with yet another fabulous fusion "Juntos" that blends all influences seamlessly together. If you know enough about these different styles of dance, then the four sections could be used to create a really stunning show. What I particularly enjoy about this album is the effortless way all the styles came together in such harmony on this album, if you're looking to create an original choreography while maintaining an Arabic flavour, you'll find something on this album to help you do that. As with most of Hossam Ramzy's albums, there's something on here for every dancer from beginners upwards so it's one that can be used at all stages of your dancing or classes.Flamenco Arabe Overview

Barcelona Nights: The Best of Ottmar Liebert 1 ReviewOh please, all these people who are so worried about this genre blending with their sacred "Flamenco." Some of the best Flamenco-inspired music is stuff like this and the work of Steve Stevens, artists who think outside the box. Music is flexible and evolving; what you call it or label it doesn't matter. Nobody seems to mind that Ricky Martin or Enrique Igelsias represent "Spanish" or "Latin" pop music. To me, Alberto Iglesias would be the real deal!
In my estimation, Flamenco has always been an art form influenced by many different forces and subject to change and evolution. Why is there such a nationalistic pride among many of its fans that ends up precluding such visionaries as Liebert, who have devoted their lives to making wonderful music, from taking part? Is it because he is not 100% Spanish?
The same exclusionary mentality that wants to limit Flamenco works well in Bible music in the South. The irony is that a Latin talent is often more welcome in other genres than a Gringo's is to Flamenco. The entire genre of Flamenco suffers much more from exclusionary thinking than it does from cross-pollination. How sad that such a beautiful art form is tainted by control freaks. Those of you who bash the likes of Liebert bash one who is intensely accomplished and pays such homage and utmost respect (not to mention commercial attention and longevity) to the art form. Very sad, indeed. You should be bashing Ricky and Enrique first!
Those of you who are so close-minded (You're probably ignoring me because of my Gringo status, anyway) should check out a really cool blue grass band I know. You'll be made to feel much more welcome than Liebert has in the wild world of Flamenco "purists."
This album is a wonderful collection of soulful, technically masterful sounds from a true visionary who pays the highest tribute to Spanish guitar by infusing it with fresh blood and vouchsafing its wonders to the masses. And it's better quality Flamenco than lots of other stuff on the market! Oh, sweet blasphemy! This is no dilettante - this man lives and breathes his music.
Other genres should only be so lucky!Barcelona Nights: The Best of Ottmar Liebert 1 OverviewMusic

Gypsy Soul: New Flamenco ReviewThis is not traditional flamenco, but rather a mixture of flamenco, Latin and jazz wrapped together to make for seventy-minutes of pure listening joy. The flamenco style is definitely the overlying theme of the album filled with tremolos, rasgueos, glopes and lightning-fast runs. Everyone that appears on this album is a master of the guitar, from those you'd expect like Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola to those who will surprise you, namely Slash. Fourteen tracks and sixteen amazing pickers provide a varied flavor for this album.
Jesse Cook starts the album with "Rattle and Burn" and sets the tone with this rumba-sounding piece. His melody comes off effortless with elegant ease. A very nice sounding piece. There is something special about two or more guitars playing at the same time, which makes "Heat of the Sun" from Strunz and Farah a joy to listen to. Each guitarist has their own voice and they counterbalance each other well. Plus, the speed of these guys is unbelievable. A more classic sounding piece comes from Oscar Lopez from his piece "Fire and Fury". Lopez is a master of the guitar and music as can be seen from the way he changes speeds throughout this piece with fingers a blur. Ruben Romero turns in the star performance of this album with his rendition of "Malaguena". His slow intro gives way to increasing speed, and his techniques will leave your jaw dropped.
Compilations like "Gypsy Soul" are great in exposing you to many artists at one time each with their own sound and nuances. This allows you to follow up with the artists that you enjoy the most. There isn't a dud on this album, and the talent and sound will leave you begging for more.Gypsy Soul: New Flamenco Overview

Gypsy Passion: New Flamenco (Narada Collection Series) ReviewWith apologies to Mr. L.K. Coleman and his utterly misleading Spotlight Review, this album does not pretend to be anything but what it is. Flamenco is a traditional form of music born in Andalusian Spain and created from Indian, Arabic, Jewish, Romano-Iberian and Celto-Iberian elements. GYPSY PASSION and its successors in the Narada catalogue are examples of Nuevo Flamenco or "New Flamenco" which is a style of Fusion incorporating traditional Flamenco, Jazz, Rock, Classical, and other musics. Either Mr. Coleman doesn't know about New Flamenco as a school of performance, or he's a purist who just dislikes it.
In either case, this album deserves five stars as a lively, engaging and pleasurable listening experience. And yes, "New Flamenco" has revitalized the traditional Andalusian form in modern-day Spain. GYPSY PASSION is absolutely worth your time.Gypsy Passion: New Flamenco (Narada Collection Series) Overview

Tonino Baliardo ReviewI can't put it away... PERIOD. :))))) El Maestro covers every aspect of excellent musicianship ~ seriously, if I write at length this will become a novel... The man has range. Bulerias, rumbas, soleas, sambas, ayyy~ You must get this CD. His brilliance *was* sorely missed this year while his cousins [the rest of the Gipsy Kings] toured the US... Y'know, the magic about Tonino Baliardo isn't how perfectly he plays~ because he DOESN'T! It's his heart, his quiet spirit~ his ability to get right back and top what he did before that made your scalp tingle, forcing a "whoa..." from your lips after you catch your breath ~ brilliant...Tonino Baliardo Overview

Gypsy Flame ReviewLet me preface my comments with this background: I have shamefully purchased over 800 CD's in the last ten years, money that possibly could have been far better spent in most cases. Most of my collection is rock music, hard rock in particular. I also have a small classical section, and another section with "Ethnic/Exotic" music. Armik fits into this last category. My five Armik CD's would definitely be in my "Top Ten" list. That's right: Armik would compose half of my ten favorite CD's out of a universe of approximately 800. That's how good this music is.
I suggest that you buy Gypsy Flame first. Keep your computer booted up until the mail comes. If you like Gypsy Flame--and I can't fathom otherwise--you will be pleased to know that Armik's other four CD's are all equally incredible. This is happy music, music that celebrates the best of life. Another reviewer of one of Armik's CD's made a comparison to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, and I agree that that is a good basis for comparison because Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass also really has that classic upbeat ambience that immediately spices up any occasion. I listen to Armik when I commute into work in the morning, and it really puts me into a postive state of mind for the balance of the day. I roll into the office with the blood pressure of a guy who's been drinking wine and eating crab while gazing listfully over the Mediterranean. This music is instant vacation.
Let me emphasize: In the five Armik CD's there is not a single weak song, and each CD is a must-have. Furthermore, you will want to start giving these things as gifts. I have been proselytizing this music left and right and people are so receptive to this sound and Armik's virtuosity that it is amazing that he is not one of the most famous musicians in the world. He truly deserves to be.Gypsy Flame Overview

Vertigo ReviewJesse Cook plays guitar, and he does it really well. His recipe is deceivingly simple: some nouveau flamenco (or call it what you will, you'll know what I mean), some World Music, spiced up with good percussion section, innovative, layered arrangements, and a discreet, but perfect technique. Musically, like Ottmar Liebert, Cook throws a lot of odd stuff in the mix, and makes it work amazingly well. But while listening to Liebert always leaves me wishing he had the technical (playing) skill to match his impressive creativity, this guy actually has both! Cook is a musician with a solid, classical guitar training, and fresh ideas to match. I can listen to that for hours. What a treat.Vertigo OverviewJesse Cook - Vertigo

The Best of the Gipsy Kings ReviewThere are no words to truly describe the music of the Gipsy Kings. You just have to listen to understand that this is music that stirs the blood and moves the soul. The Gipsy Kings will transport you to another world, where you will want to dance your heart out, and sing along at the top of your voice - good-bye inhibitions. The sound of this CD is pure magic!
The Gipsy Kings are from the gypsy settlements in Arles, and Montpelier, in the south of France. The group began back in the 1970s and is made up of singers and guitarists from the Reyes and Baliardo families. Lead singer Nicolas Reyes is the son of famed Flamenco singer José Reyes. Their music really took-off in 1986 when they began to work with record producer Claude Martinez. The band's trademark is the indigenous music called the rumba flamenco, with its frenetic guitar work and passionate vocals. The rumba - which originated in Africa - traveled from Zaire via the slave trade to Cuba and the New World, then back to Barcelona, where it was adopted by the Gypsies.
The group sings in gitane, a dialect mixing French, Spanish, and Catalan. "The Best of the Gipsy Kings" is an 18-track, single CD that includes much of their finest work. Cuts like "Djobi, Djoba," "Bem, Bem, Maria," "Escucha Me," and "Baile Me," will literarily move you - your feet, then your hands and shoulders...you just have to dance to this music. The dramatic "Viento del Arena" is pure sound of Spain with a gypsy touch. The mournful "Triste Pena," and "Amor" are ballads with roots plainly in flamenco. And "Volare" is a classic, with a slightly different take - gypsy style.
I have yet to hear anything that I do not like from the Gipsy Kings. There is only music that I love, and music that I like very much. This CD is a compilation of the best of the best! The Best of the Gipsy Kings Overview17 tracks chosen from their six Nonesuch albums, including the hits Bamboleo; Djobi Djoba; Baila Me; Vamos a Bailar; Volare; Love & Liberte; Moorea , and more from the undisputed champs of the World Music charts!

Nouveau Flamenco ReviewTrue, Ottmar Liebert isn't the most accomplished of guitarists. I own three of his CDs and can certainly see a repetitive factor. But then - I didn't buy "Nuevo Flamenco" to be a music critic. I bought it because when I listened to it the first time it went straight to my feet! This is rythmical & passionate music - whether labeled Flamenco or New Age! And I can honestly say that more people have asked me "What CD is that? " when I played it than any other of the many albums I own. However: In my opinion this is by far the best Liebert album. The others aren't too hot...especially not "Borrasca" (IMHO)...Nouveau Flamenco Overview

Great Masters of Flamenco, Vol. 3 ReviewUniversally considered the greatest female cante of the 20th century, that of Pastora Pavón (1890-1969) sometimes surprises those hearing it for the first time with its harshness and somewhat nasal quality (reportedly, this was an effect of age); but there is no missing its emotive power, or its total mastery. Much of it was learned from the legendary Manuel Torre, the lover of her youth, and much from other major 19th century singers whose cante would have been lost had she not perpetuated it.
The recording is ropy by modern standards, but this is pure flamenco history -- especially as the guitarists are Melchor de Marchena, Manolo de Badajoz and Niño Ricardo!
The total time is 39'59"

Legends of Gypsy Flamenco ReviewNo one does flamenco better than the gypsies. The artists on this cd are renown flamenco musicians/performers. This is high caliber stuff we have here, ladies and gentlemen. What you will hear here is what the performers do for themselves after the tourists have gone away. Like what we do here in Sevilla on the weekends in our courtyards with just family and friends. Pure flamenco with soul and passion, no commercial performances for the tourists. This is a great cd with famous artists and "Legends of Gypsy Flamenco II" follows in its footsteps. I would highly recommend starting here for people who are beginning to listen to flamenco music before they hear "nouveau flamenco".Legends of Gypsy Flamenco Overview
