Brushfire Fairytales ReviewBeing a person whose favourite genres of music are Soul and Avant-garde Jazz, sometimes a break is needed from the ever-amazing art created by soul artists and the mad cacaphony of white noise created by avant-gardists. Increasingly, I am a fan of the acoustic guitar in it simplicity, especially if it is one of only a few instruments. Singer/Songwriter James Taylor springs to mind as an artist who I really enjoy listening to. He can make you calm after a storm just by playing his guitar and singing a song with his soothing voice.
An artist who I discovered while talking to some surfer friends was Jack Johnson. I decided to give him a go, and I found his album to be just the thing I was looking for. With his trio of guitar, bass and drums, this is a real acoustic album through and through. Brushfire Fairytales is like a cross between James Taylor's mellow singer/songwriter work and the slightly more upbeat work of Ben Harper (only slightly). Even Jack's singing style is like a fusion of the two.
The album is simply amazing based simply on its merits; simplicity. It is an feat in minimalism that this album can hold your attention without the commercial smoke and mirrors of more poppish acoustic rock. Also, Jack is an artist who has something to say in his sometimes cryptic lyrics. He only brings in a little help on Flake, using Ben Harper and Tommy Jordan. Inaudible Melodies, Posters, Sexy Plexi, Flake, Bubble Toes and The News are my favourites.
Some criticise this album for its lack of variation. Sure; he seems to stay in a fairly steady pace and sound, but I have heard jazz albums with less variation that are celebrated masterpieces (Kind of Blue for all it brilliance is pretty much easy going all the way through; John Coltrane's Ascension is madness all the way through [it is one song though]). The point is that he makes good music, writes his own songs, plays guitar and is appealing enough to make it to the Billboard Top 100 albums chart. In other words he is the best of both worlds; a popular artist who is actually talented.
I hope that he has considerable fame and success based on his talent and that he will continue to make excellent music like this for years to come.Brushfire Fairytales OverviewFans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 ReviewI LOVE this CD. Ms. Hill walks us through her spiritual journey. If you don't want to go, get off this train now. She won't mind 'cause as she reiterates time and time again she is doing her own thing. Ms. Hill feels no pressure from the industry and it shows. This cd is absolutely nothing like Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This cd is, as she states on her cd,"a tub that stands on its own bottom."
She is a poet. Her track "Just Like Water" is awesome. The metaphorical references to water and relationships blew me away the first time I heard it. Not only does she work her magic with an acoustic guitar and her distinctive voice, she works your soul with her spiritual revelations. As a listner you are required to become reflective. Even if you do not like the music you WILL walk away with an understanding of self. And if not with an understanding, than surely with questions.
This CD is inspiring, revealing, honest, healing, thoughtful, insightful, gritty yet delightful. In case you don't know it yet, I am vibin' this in a Big way.MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 Overview

The Very Best of Tommy Emmanuel ReviewI first heard Tommy performing on TV a while back. I was blown away. I never heard anyone play acoustic guitar like him...ever! I then heard him live and was just so impressed - what a fresh new way of interpretting the acoustic guitar. No one plays harmonics like Tommy. So I ordered this CD and was devistated from the start. This wasn't the Tommy I knew and loved. It was watered down Tommy and doesn't serve justice to how good he really is. This is why I am being so critial. You will never know his true talent by listening to these CD's. The music is poorly produced and poorly mixed. Much of the time the accompanyment sounds like the main feature with Tommy playing somewhere in the background. In fact, sometimes it sounds like he is playing at the far end of the room, away from everyone else, or even in a differnt room altogether. Tommy's guitar playing is meek, not very expressive and is shrouded in effects. I mean how much reverb does one need. The drums sound like they come from a track machine with reverb. The orchestration is cheesy synthesizer tracks. I am not sure what went wrong here. I am still disspointed whenever I listen to it. Check out Johnny A for an example of how it should really be done. The Very Best of Tommy Emmanuel Overview

Live & Acoustic ReviewIt's really hard to find a good album from a young artist these days. If you don't know what you're looking for, you can find a lot of popular crap. You never have to worry about that with Mraz.
Live at Java Joe's is a real treasure. Mraz is a brilliant songwriter and you can really relate to him on this album. He's not (yet) my favorite artist of all time, but he's certainly the best live performer out there. No, his sets don't sound like his studio recordings-they're worlds better. On Java Joe's, you get that flavor without audience interference. I don't know how he got such a perfect recording, but he did.
Mraz's talent shines through on old favorites like "You and I Both." The live version is energized and free, unlike the studio recording. "Sleep All Day" with the "At Last" intro is absolutely brilliant. By far, my favorite track on this album is "0% Interest," but that's just because I have a personal bias toward that song. His guitar playing is brilliant as always, and his talent and love for vocal jazz music also graces this CD.
It doesn't matter if you're an old Mraz fan or if you only know him by his radio hits; you've got to own this album.
Best lyric: "There's something in the way you laugh that makes me feel like a child." (After an Afternoon)Live & Acoustic Overview

Aerial Boundaries ReviewAnyone interested in discovering the massive changes in contemporary acoustic guitar playing perpetrated by just one man, this is the mandatory first step. Aerial Boundaries is, without doubt, the record that presented Michael Hedges to the world as the ultimate acoustic guitar visionary, stretching the limits of the instrument to accomodate his uncanny musical ideas. I was fortunate enough to meet him on various occasions, and to study with John Stropes, responsible for his transcription work. On such occasions, Hedges told me that, despite the fact that he felt the necessity of evolving his music, this was his most accurate attempt to revolutionize the way the acoustic guitar should sound. Without question, his best and most essential recording.Aerial Boundaries OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: HEDGES,MICHAELTitle: AERIAL BOUNDARIESStreet Release Date: 07/07/1987

America ReviewSure, there are inevitable comparisons to Crosby, Stills and Nash. They are unavoidable because anyone playing acoustic guitars and singing harmonies will bring them to mind.
Comparisons aside, this is one great album. Every time I listen to it, it's like another acoustic guitar lesson. The interplay and blending of the guitars is very inspiring. The songs are good and the singing is right on the mark. I didn't realize what a big influence these guys were until I picked this up on CD and started listening to it again on a regular basis.

The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions ReviewI have had "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack on my wishlist for awhile, but never bought it for two reasons: it's copy-protected, and it only included a few of Seu Jorge's songs, NOT including my particular favorite from the movie, "Queen Bitch." I actually got Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" album after seeing the movie, because I was so impressed with Seu Jorge's interpretations of Bowie's songs. Many songs from "Ziggy" are on this acoustic album, including "Starman," "Ziggy Stardust," "Lady Stardust," Rock 'n' Roll Suicide," "Suffragette City," and "Five Years." In the liner notes, David Bowie himself is quoted as saying, "Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with."
One reader was disappointed there was no lyrics sheet. I agree, especially since the lyrics in Portuguese don't correspond with Bowie's lyrics. By the way, "Seu Jorge" just means "Mr. George." "Seu" is not a first name, just a title. You may recognize him as "Man? Galinha" (literally "Chicken Manuel," but strangely translated as "Knockout Ned") from the movie "City of God."
This is a great album for fans of David Bowie and Brazilian music. If you like this album, or acuoustic Brazilian melodies in general, you should check out Jorge Ben's 1974 album "A T?bua de Esmeralda," which is probably the best album I've purchased in the past year. The Life Aquatic: Studio Sessions OverviewKnown for his work both as a musician and an actor, Seu Jorge was born in the favelas of Brazil and has risen to international fame. He's appeared in the critically acclaimed movie, 'City of God' as well as Wes Anderson's latest film, 'The Life Aquatic withSteve Zissou.' In 'The Life Aquatic' Seu Jorge's character appeared throughout as a sailor troubadour, strumming bossa nova-flavored versions of David Bowie songs in Portuguese. A handful of those songs appeared on the soundtrack to the film but now the entire recording session is being made available. Hollywood. 2005.

All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites ReviewThese sevillanas are just great and its amazing to me that they are not heard much. Maybe because, in spite of the great listening and the flamenco action that is heard, you are left out of the visual action. Acoustic Songbook ReviewA wonderful collection of acoustic recordings (with the exception of Dido, who I abhor) that is great to listen to over and over.
One thing to note - Amazon lists 59 tracks but there is actually 65 tracks. The missing tracks are:
60 - Leo Kottke - Poor Boy
61 - John Renbourn - Nobody's Fault But Mine
62 - Martin Carthy - The Harry Lime Theme
63 - Richard Thompson - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning
64 - Gordon Lightfoot - Gordon Lightfoot
65 - Bob Dylan - Dark Eyes
It even says that on the image for the product listing so either someone got lazy or the Amazon system can only handle 59 tracks. Interesting as that is, CD Universe also lists only 59 tracks so they are probably scraping Amazon's database. Or vice versa...
Anyway, great set of three discs!Acoustic Songbook Overview

Joyland ReviewI discovered Andy on youtube as many did and bought Art of Motion instantly! I recently saw him on tour where he was selling this CD/DVD before they were released and got me a signed copy. It has been great follow up material to his previous stuff. I think the only drawback might be that he has some accompaniment on a few of his songs (cello or drum rhythm) that does add to the overall song, but might take away a little from his solo guitar. What I loved about Art of Motion was listening closely to all the sound that Andy alone could produce from his guitar and adding in another instrument 'muddies' it up a little at times. It is still a good overall end result and shouldn't keep you from picking this one up.
There is also a DVD included where he tells a little about his history and shows you around the guitar shop where he taught guitar lessons. He also plays some of his songs live (not youtube style... very professional). Lastly, he gives some instruction on how to tune and play a few of his songs. He still plays too fast for me as a beginner, but as I improve, I will come back and try to give some of these a shot.
I like that he is just a regular guy with an amazing talent and he remains humble through it all. Keep up the awesome work, Andy!Joyland Overview

Live at Radio City ReviewWith lossless 5.1 24-bit/96kHz Dolby TrueHD, uncompressed 2.0 24-bit/48kHz PCM and a high bit-rate pristine VC-1 1080p picture, this marks not only the first time a Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds show is being released on a video format, but the first time we have a lossless high resolution surround mix of these two great musicians.
You can read the tracklist to see what is on this disc. D+T shows are always pretty special if you're lucky enough to get one.
Is the difference worth spending $3 more than the DVD? Only if you have a Blu-ray player or a Playstation 3, then you would be foolish to NOT buy it. Even if you don't have an HDTV the high bitrate VC-1 encode will look far superior at 480i on a standard television set than the DVD will.
If you do pick this up, get ready to experience Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds like never before.
As Peter Bracke said on High Def Digest about this release "the TrueHD is without a doubt the best audio presentation I've yet heard on a next-gen release. I mean it -- it's that good."
Do you hear that people? The best audio presentation of any Blu-ray or HD DVD disc to date.
Enjoy. =DLive at Radio City OverviewIn April 2007, Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds embarked on a 3 city theatre tour, culminating with a performance in the intimate confines of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Due to the small sized venues and extremely limited number of dates, tickets were practically impossible to get, making these new 2 CD and 2 DVD sets all the more desirable to the huge Dave Matthews band fanbase.

Center Stage ReviewI was fortunate enough to hear Tommy Emmanuel live in concert in May of this year (2008). From the opening notes to the last encore, he was one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever heard.
His technical skill is amazing, but he's about more than flash. He plays with a wide range of deep human emotion, and does it all with great wit.
This recording captures the essence of that experience. It's a live concert recording that finds him at his best, showing off his skills, and connecting and communicating with the audience. It may sound like hyperbole, but this recording has rocketed onto my list of my favorite recordings of all time.

Angels of Love ReviewYngwie has been a household name for years when it comes to anything related to guitars. His earlier works such as Rising Force or Trilogy have become classics and are considered by many to be the definitive of musicianship and guitar artistry. If you are one of those people then you might as well not read any of the reviews including my own, as this album will please you. Any others whom maybe skeptical please continue reading.
This album as you should and probably already do know is predominantly acoustic. Which means if you are a fan of Yngwie's earlier riffing and faster paced Metallic sound then there is a 50/50 chance this album might be a bit of a disappointment. Now don't think this isn't an amazing album because it is honestly one of the best acoustic albums I have heard. There are electric guitar pieces but they are sparse and more a part of the background to help create a dynamic contrast to the acoustic guitars, rather then the rip roaring leads Yngwie is better known for.
The all around pace of the album is slow and at times has a haunting ambiance untouched by fellow guitar legends. There is quite a bit of orchestral/keyboard work in the background giving the songs more structure rather then just having the guitars alone, this I am thankful for. I love good guitar playing, but I enjoy it more when it is accented by some kind of backdrop. Being a long time fan of Malmsteen and his various works I can honestly say this is one of my favorite releases by him in some time.
I highly recommend this album to all of the Malmsteen fan base, but as I noted be cautious as fans of the Metal side of his music may be put off. Furthermore fans of acoustic and guitar playing in general will be impressed by his skills on this release and should also be able to appreciate this. However new fans should look into his earlier releases before delving into Angels Of Love, start with anything from the 80's and make your way towards his more recent releases. All in all and giving my honest and completely unbiased opinion; This album ranks up there with his earlier works as far as overall musicianship goes.
Thank you for reading and I hope that I have encouraged you to purchase this or other of Yngwie Malmsteen's various releases. I enjoy the feedback so if my review helped you or at least intrigued you please let me know by clicking the button below, again thank you for reading.

Pink Moon ReviewIn the throes of a depression that would see him dead at the age of 26 from an overdose of anti-depression medication, Nick Drake still managed to produce his last album, "Pink Moon." Unlike his first two efforts, which consisted of orchestrated folk-pop music, this 1972 album was just Drake playing his acoustic guitar and singing (with a bit of piano here and there). The result is a bleak testament to melancholy and alienation that has a haunting and pristine beauty. There are only eleven songs, most of which are under three minutes in length, which is why the album is not even a half-hour long, but there is a sense in which anything longer would be too much to bear. "Pink Moon," by itself, justifies Drake's status as a cult figure among those who love folk-rock.
Ironically, you have probably hear Nick Drake's music before, because the title track was used for a Volkswaggen commercial, just another example of how music is perverted to commercial interests (what else is new?). I have been spending the cold winter putting together mixes of folk music (in the broadest sense) and making a concerted effort to get beyond Bob Dylan and the Byrds to explore the likes of Sandy Denny and the Beau Brummels. Checking out Sandy Denny led me to Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson, and eventually to Ralph McTell and Nick Drake. Now I can only wonder what rock I have been living under that I have never come across these artists before.
The title track is a beautiful folk ballad, performed with just Drake's superb acoustic guitar playing and haunting vocal. Throughout the album you notice the depth of his lyrics and his guitar playing. The latter might have been lost in an album with orchestration, but here you have the opportunity to listen to the openings of "Radio" and "Parasite" unadorned. For the former a choice example would be the opening of what is probably the best song on the album (it is hard to choose), "Which Will," which begins: "Which will you go for/Which will you love/Which will you choose from/From the stars above?" There is a simple elegance to the lyrics, captured by the vocals, and complimented by the more complex guitar playing.
Nick Drake only produced three albums, so there is no reason not to have all of them in your music library. These works represent the very best of the British folk-rock scene and Drake is a first rate singer-songwriter whose songs of failed romance, mortality, and depression are quite affective. Drake intended "Pink Moon" to be his final album, saying he had nothing left to record. When you lose yourself listening to these songs, you can actually convince yourself that this was true.Pink Moon OverviewReissue of the late British folk icon's final full-lengthalbum, released in 1972. 11 tracks. Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) ReviewPat Metheny and Charlie Haden are apparently close neighbours, well, that much is now obvious. These two masterful musicians have become one in a most wonderful way, so close that they're almost the same person.
The recording has an earthy, very "real" sound to it, Metheny is sitting over there, Haden just over there, and you're alone with them, listening to these two masters entertain you. It is an intimate record, to be listened to when you're feeling extremely comfortable for it to achieve its maximum effect.
The melodies and chord choices are superlative, generally I know where they're going to take the tune, but when they make different choices I realise why they're in the league that they are. The results can haunt me, lift me, leave me wondering just how they could have made that melodic line so perfect.
It is not at all provocative, it doesn't jarr the senses in any way. It soothes and relaxes as it passes by. If there has to be any criticism of the record it cannot be directed at the musicianship, which is of the highest order. A number of similar-sounding tracks can eventually coalesce in the memory, and that is a problem here, there are peaks of pleasure and plains of placidity, but they're subtle, and the musical landscape ends up looking rather like the sumptuous cover art.
The only recording niggle I might direct at the recording is that some of Pat's more percussive acoustic notes come awfully close to distorting the recording on a couple of tracks. Depending upon my mood these sometimes enhance that "two masters in your living room" effect, and at other times I'll feel that they're intrusive.
As soon as I bought this album and found such beauty I passed on a recommendation to a friend with similarly avant-garde tastes in other areas (I regularly listen to Bill Nelson, David Torn, Fripp, Russell Mills, Allan Holdsworth etc but appreciate Metheny's tremendous musicality nonetheless). My friend was immediately captured by the same spell. In the years we've known each other he's never used the word "beautiful" to describe any music he's ever talked about, except for "Missouri sky ...".Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) OverviewFull title - Beyond the Missouri Sky (Short Stories). Ladies of the Canyon ReviewWith her second album CLOUDS, Joni Mitchell established herself as an artist who was here to stay. LADIES OF THE CANYON affirmed her status as one of the most important female artists in music history. Like most artists, Joni was just getting her feet wet with her first two albums, but it was on her third that she really blossomed. For the first time, Joni sings with the right emotions that her songs often call for. Songs like "Willy", "The Conversation", and "The Arrangement" are short but difficult songs that accurately portray the hardships of love and romance. Another prominent subject is that of the loss of innocence, and Joni brings to it her distinctive brand of poetry. The sad introspection continues on songs like "Woodstock" (not the CSNY version, but in a slower, more dirge-like sound), and "The Circle Game" (which for an almost-20 year old man like me rings all too true). In fact, "The Circle Game" might be the greatest song ever written about coming of age. CANYON's best-known song also deals with the album's prominent subject of time passage: "Big Yellow Taxi". Anyone who thinks Joni is all about the feminine point of view of life's trials and tribulations will probably be shocked by this song that takes a lighthearted, funny approach to a subject that would often get drowned in the emotiveness typical of folk singing/songwriting. Joni's expression at the end of the song is priceless! As her career progressed, Joni Mitchell would get even more personal and introspective. But LADIES OF THE CANYON is the perfect document of a young woman and her approach to life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.Ladies of the Canyon OverviewThis lady gives a sneak peak here to what we see in later albums...some sizable instrumental sections, jazz influences and piano accompaniments. Includes The Arrangement; Rainy Night House; For Free; Woodstock , and more.

Blue ReviewIf reading all the 5 star reviews here hasn't swayed you already, I'll say it again- buy this album. After receiving it as a gift from my MOM, (I'm in high school...) I wasn't sure how it could be any good. I listened to it a few times before I latched on to it, really. The warbling melodies of joni and her stark instrumentation makes for a difficult listen at first. But when you have gotten used to joni and her style, every track on the cd becomes worn in like a sumptous slipper. The absolute beauty of the music is worlds apart from what you hear on the radio or MTV. And it's a gateway to much of the other fantastic work joni has done- I've bought about 5 other joni cd's since last christmas when I got Blue. The point is- give it a chance. Whenever I try to tell my friends to listen to joni, I get teased. "Joni Mitchell? Folky outdated guitar player?" But if you take my advice and LISTEN to this record, you will be rewarded with it's richness. It has become an integral addition to my life, not just my cd rack.Blue OverviewThe quintessential singer-songwriter album, its essence just Joni on acoustic guitar or piano, alone with her intimate, confessional songs. Oh, those songs!- River; A Case of You; Carey; This Flight Tonight; All I Want ; the title track, and 4 more.

Best ReviewThis is my favorite of all of Leo Kottke's albums. I've owned it on vinyl for years and it's the only reason there is still a turntable in my living room. It has an unbelievable live version of "Stealing", followed by a Live version of "Living in the Country" that leaves me speechless. Play them back to back for your guitar playing buddies and watch them turn green.
I am just thankful that I had a friend who brought Leo Kottke to my attention. That friend received a case of scotch for doing so. Hands down my favorite artist of all time, in any category. He's the best there is, and this is him at his finest.Best Overview

Live at Luther College ReviewHearing this album, I only wish I had been live at Luther College.
There's a spirit of playfulness and genuine fun about the performers which easily translates onto the CD and lets the listener know that these guys have the greatest jobs on the planet. You can tell, especially on tracks like "Little Thing" and "Ants Marching", that they genuinely love what they do. Not only do they frequently joke with the audience, but they take their music along decidedly frisky pathways. Their music soars with an improvisational ease in which Dave Matthew's voice is as elastic as Tim Reynold's guitar.
I've read in other reviews that this album is, perhaps, only for Dave Matthews fans, but I would have to disagree. This is a fine album to start one's appreciation of Matthews. The connection they were obviously able to make with the listeners at Luther College is infectious: you can't help but like performers who were so entirely adored by their audience.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that they're able to play like the devil harboring a speed habit, either.Live at Luther College Overview

Only ReviewWhenever I read reviews, I am made aware we are all different and guitar freaks ( of which I am undoubtedly one ) the world over like different things. Thank God.
But I would wager there is not a single ( open minded ) Guitar freak out there who would not sit back and be humbled by the brilliance of this album, nor one that does not find the outstanding beauty and emotion in this music. I have only just received my copy from Amazon, and I dont think since "Casino" by Al Di Meola there has been an album that has hit my emotions in the same way.
Perfect acoustic guitar playing and( perhaps more importantly ) song writing. Thank you Tommy Emmanuel ... someome below said it ... a masterpiece. Expect more business from me pretty soon !Only Overview2002 release from the native Australian who has 4 Platinum & 3 Gold albums. This is his first solo acoustic album and finally being released internationally on Steve Vai's Newly created Favored Nations Acoustic imprint. HDCD.
