Orchestrion ReviewI've got tickets for Pat's Orchestrion tour in May and I'm bringing my son who is 11 and just starting out his young percussion life. I can't wait to introduce him to one of the finer things in life: i.e. Pat Metheny's Music.
Do I wish he was touring with his band? Yes. Lyle Mays and rest of the crew. I would give anything for a chance to introduce my son to that very rare treat - live especially.
After listening to the Orchestrion CD for the first time, will this be worth it? I think so. I give Pat credit for trying something like this. What the heck: a multi-Grammy winner can step out a little bit I think. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it's definitely Pat, albeit 'mechanized mallet percussion Pat'. But it's okay. It's a project that's close to him and I can imagine the experience of seeing this setup live will be quite original and fun!
The CD is not going to shock and awe you. It's solid Pat Metheny - right on the money in terms of harmonics, improvisations, tonalities, and substance; he's attempting something different here in terms of instrumental backup. I'm giving Pat a 'Hall Pass' on this one. It's decent work!! Go for it Pat!!
There are many like me who slip a Pat Metheny CD into their player while driving to work (or wherever) and are instantly transported back to some of the finer times in their lives. I'm sure I share this sentiment with many, many other people. For this I can't thank Pat (Lyle and various other contributing artists) enough. Pat has laid the background track for many of our lives and it's been a good one. The vibrations have always been filled with inspiration, order, spirit, compassion, kindness, expression, and dare I say Loving Hope. And for the opportunity to let my son feel even a single bit of this, now through this Orchestrion effort, well so be it - I am thankful.

Bright Size Life Review28 years later, this debut disc by a young upstart guitarist from Lee's Summit MO STILL sounds as fresh, engaging and surprising as the day it was first unleashed!
What an amazing chemistry that took place here! Start with Pat's Jim Hall-meets-rural country and lyrical post-bop sensibilities, combined with another then-young upstart, Jaco Pastorious playing a supremely singing fretless bass and the explosive and yet detailed drumming of Bob Moses made for a whole new sound in jazz, with lots of wide-open spaces, impressionistic pastel-like harmonies, a Country inflected yearning and challenging intricate melodies that stay with you for days.
Pat wrote all but one track, the closing medley of Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip/Broadway Blues", in which Pat gets to the essence of Ornette's music and shows a very lyrical, compelling side of it that I think many people miss when they think of Ornette, he wasn't ALL skronk and honk, that's for sure! The original Metheny pieces are by turns fiery yet lyrical and loaded with subtle colorings not normally associated with jazz-guitar, which up until that point either stayed very conservatively bluesy with extended harmonies, or went to the opposite extreme of atonality, but here, Pat begins his rich musical journey and finds a well-defined voice normally associated with players twice his age in those days.

Idle Moments ReviewIf you're never heard Grant Green's guitar work before, this is the place to start. Not only because Green is playing at his finest, but so his is his all-star supporting cast which includes Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, and Duke Pearson on piano. The Pearson penned title-cut may be my single favorite recorded cut in jazz history. Each of the aforementioned soloists does some incredible work. The piece is laid-back and languid, but with incredible soul. The rest of the tunes vary in tempo but most have the same lazy, smoky feel to them while sounding fiercely inspired.
Idle Moments also happens to sound incredible in its newly remastered edition by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder. Its one of the best sounding discs in the series even. Those of you who own the original Blue Note release should definitely consider the upgrade.
Highly recommened for anyone with an interest in jazz or those looking for a place to develop one.Idle Moments OverviewTime is suspended on these four haunting, extended tunes by this brilliant guitarist with the aid of an all-star cast. Unique in Green's discography for its relaxed, lengthy performances and almost dream-like lyricism, this Blue Note classic could well be called "Ballads for the Ages."

City ReviewPaul Brown continues to dazzle me with his acoustic talents. The City is the second CD I own by him and besides the "Cosmic Monkey" providing a unique blend of Jazz and funk background and which to me no other artist has previously displayed, the other tracks are equally engaging, especially, "A Real Mother For You" reminds me of the 70s done by Johhny Guitar Watson. If you want a real treat, please check it out and you wont regret it.City Overview

Nat King Cole Trio: Instrumental Classics ReviewIf like me you came to jazz after 1955, chances are you're quite familiar with Nat the pop singing star but know far less about his piano prowess. This is the album that finally set the record straight for me--he was above all a talented, creative jazz pianist whose sensual voice seduced not only the public but Nat as well into listening exclusively to its promises of fame and fortune. Had he not sung a note, he would no doubt have taken his place right alongside Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum. In fact, listening to him on this album is so much like hearing Oscar Peterson (who ironically inherited Nat's singing voice as well) that I've had to revise my life-long assumption that Oscar was above all a descendant of Tatum. The Cole lineage seems ever more traceable, especially when you consider that one of Oscar's favorite jazz performances was "Easy Listening Blues," one of 18 tracks on this CD.
Twenty-five years ago I had a chance to have a brew or two with Monty Alexander. When I asked him if Oscar was a major influence, he responded: "Yes, but not as much as Nat." Now I finally understand what he was talking about.
(Note: No doubt Capitol will replace this 1992 reissue with a remastered version minus the surface noise. Bear in mind, however, that there's always a trade-off: Eliminating "scratchy" sounds also erases high-frequency musical information.)Nat King Cole Trio: Instrumental Classics Overview

Larry & Lee ReviewThere is something special about two guitarists trading licks back and forth. Funny how four years after this album Larry Carlton would end up replacing Lee Ritenour in the group Foreplay. This album will not disappoint you if you're a fan of either guitarist. Both men are incredibly talented with the guitar, and play with real drive and emotion.
The album starts out with a great tune in "Crosstown Kids", which prepares you for what's to come. "L.A. Underground" really steps it up with Ritenour leading the way, breaking in several places to give Carlton a place to play. On the cut, "After the Rain" they lay back and play a very smooth piece before turning it up again on "Remembering". Throughout the album, these guitarists use each other to springboard to new levels of playing. They take turns expanding on an idea, combining their styles to really bring out some fun music.
There is some very good stuff on this album. Ritenour's smooth playing is counterbalanced by the bluesy edge of Carlton's. The complement is enjoyable, and it gives quite a coloring to the music. Guitar fans should find this album very impressive. It is one that I keep revisiting.Larry & Lee Overview

Classic Early Recordings in Chronogical Order ReviewEven if this weren't such a great deal (and it is!), this belongs on every jazz collector's shelf. Simply the best overview of Django's oeuvre, with astonishing, soaring, magical (daring even!) virtuosity by the guitar master and his counterpart on the violin, Stephan Grappelly.
Considering the price, and that no one had yet reviewed it here, I was skeptical about the quality--but the sound is fine! There was a little too much chug-chugging accompaniment on the first CD, but this was apparently the style (listen to some early Ellington), and the rhythm section loosens up more later.
It's true that there is no bound booklet as we've come to expect from box sets, but I was pleased to see informative liner notes and credits with each CD. Much of the music is taken directly from the 78s of such noted archivists as Robert Parker and John R. T. Davies. Ted Kendall (the remastering engineer and force behind this compilation) notes that he "removed as much extraneous noise as possible without cutting into the music but have otherwise attempted no 'enhancement' of the sound--it would only obstruct the music anyway." Good decision!
Whether you've been a longtime fan or discovered Django Reinhardt through Woody Allen's "Sweet and Lowdown," this is an immensely enjoyable collection. Buy it soon!Classic Early Recordings in Chronogical Order Overview

Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) ReviewPat Metheny and Charlie Haden are apparently close neighbours, well, that much is now obvious. These two masterful musicians have become one in a most wonderful way, so close that they're almost the same person.
The recording has an earthy, very "real" sound to it, Metheny is sitting over there, Haden just over there, and you're alone with them, listening to these two masters entertain you. It is an intimate record, to be listened to when you're feeling extremely comfortable for it to achieve its maximum effect.
The melodies and chord choices are superlative, generally I know where they're going to take the tune, but when they make different choices I realise why they're in the league that they are. The results can haunt me, lift me, leave me wondering just how they could have made that melodic line so perfect.
It is not at all provocative, it doesn't jarr the senses in any way. It soothes and relaxes as it passes by. If there has to be any criticism of the record it cannot be directed at the musicianship, which is of the highest order. A number of similar-sounding tracks can eventually coalesce in the memory, and that is a problem here, there are peaks of pleasure and plains of placidity, but they're subtle, and the musical landscape ends up looking rather like the sumptuous cover art.
The only recording niggle I might direct at the recording is that some of Pat's more percussive acoustic notes come awfully close to distorting the recording on a couple of tracks. Depending upon my mood these sometimes enhance that "two masters in your living room" effect, and at other times I'll feel that they're intrusive.
As soon as I bought this album and found such beauty I passed on a recommendation to a friend with similarly avant-garde tastes in other areas (I regularly listen to Bill Nelson, David Torn, Fripp, Russell Mills, Allan Holdsworth etc but appreciate Metheny's tremendous musicality nonetheless). My friend was immediately captured by the same spell. In the years we've known each other he's never used the word "beautiful" to describe any music he's ever talked about, except for "Missouri sky ...".Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) OverviewFull title - Beyond the Missouri Sky (Short Stories). Moonlight in Vermont ReviewIn modern times, Johnny Smith has become unappreciated and forgotten for the superb artistry he displayed as a jazz guitarist-maestro. Listen to Moonlight in Vermont. It is unique for its combination of pithy feeling and technical virtuosity. Technically, Smith burns on single-note leads and soothes with inventive chord melody playing. Perhaps his style sometimes borders on being too precious and precise, but this is trifling criticism. His style comes from the "cool" school of jazz (Lennie Tristano, et al.), but he imbues his music with too much controlled emotion to be called purely "cool." Also, fine tenor sax work from Stan Getz and Zoot Sims serve as excellent complements to Smith's fretboard excursions. Absolute Benson ReviewIts been years since I've bought a George Benson album. Having been a fan of his guitar virtuosity from the days of White Rabbit and Good King Bad, I was dismayed by his seemingly permanent move to the world of disco and soft jazz/soul. The teaser for Absolute Benson promised a taste of the old days once again so I was lured into buying the album. Well, it took a few listens to appreciate what George was doing here. It is not like the days of long ago, but neither is Absolute Benson like the disco pop atrocities of the late 70s-80s. That veteran producer Tommy LiPuma is here is a plus, so is the presence of keyboard master Joe Sample. As it turns out, Absolute Benson is an enjoyable mixture of jazz and blues with just enough guitar heroics to evoke the days of old, but also enough understatement to let you know that this is a new day. The album is smooth enough to play at the office, yet generates enough musical energy to make it perfect background for a party. My favorite cuts are the last two, the bluesy Come Back Baby and the George Benson-Joe Sample composition Medicine Man. If you are an old time fan who has been ambivalent about the musical path Benson has taken, its time to shake it off because he proves here that he's still cookin'.Absolute Benson OverviewMostly an instrumental record of new standards and rare favorites. Night Songs ReviewAfter two original-based albums, Kreisberg returns to standard material with this excellent CD. At least for this listener, it is a welcome thing, since a style like Kreisberg's is often better understood and appreciated when he's playing the same tunes that countless guitarists and other musicians have played for decades. When he does that, the strength of his highly evolved style becomes immediately apparent.
Kreisberg's style is easily recognizable, with chord voicings and lines that have been carefully chosen to create a coherent, yet flexible style of improvising. The constantly inspired and resourceful playing makes his style anything but predictable, and Kreisberg manages to keep his guitar playing and tone excellent throughout, which is not always the case with improvisationally oriented guitar players. This is especially evident on the tracks where he plays his Collings flattop with a gorgeous tone. Enough has been said about his outstanding melodicism, but it bears another mention. Outstanding.
The band is one of the very best anywhere these days, and the musicianship is great throughout. The rapport between Kreisberg, Penman and Ferber has been developed through countless gigs and it is just a pleasure to witness such relaxed, effortless meeting of great musical minds. And a special mention is in order about Versace who is better known as an organ player but can bring his one-of-a-kind creativity to the piano in an undeniable way. There is no run-of-the-mill mindless comping here, everything adds to the musical whole with a sparkling, vibrant tone.
Just when you think that you've heard all that can be done with these much-played standard tunes, this CD will expand your thoughts on the subject. With these open-minded musicians of the new generation of jazz greats, the tunes get naturally transformed to a new place with the other foot firmly in the tradition.Night Songs Overview

Though the recordings are from the '30s, they are cleaned up nicely by Blue Note's superb remastering. Most of the tunes were written or co-written by Django, and they showcase the brilliant playing of both Django and violinist Stephane Grappelli. Django was not only an amazing soloist, but an incredible rhythm player. Listen to his comping around Grappelli and the horns. He had so much energy his acoustic guitar cut through the rest of the band. Like most musical geniuses, he made it sound natural and effortless. I will repeat what I have stated elsewhere: Django is to '30s jazz guitar what Jimi Hendrix is to '60s rock guitar, a diamond-in-the-rough genius in a class all by himself. There have been none like him, before or since. Green Street ReviewThis is not only a great guitar album; it's a great jazz album. Grant Green was a master improvisor and on this CD we hear him in just the company of bass and drums. He makes the most of his opportunity. Green's high, bright guitar sound is on display, but it's his constant improvisational ideas which are so fascinating. Green never hurries but weaves his melodic lines together in a coherent way that captures your attention and invites repeat hearings. Bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey provide swinging and unobstrusive support for the leader's lines throughout. Every tune is a highlight, though special mention must be made of "Round About Midnight" and the 2 takes of "Green With Envy" (based on Horace Silver's "Nica's Dream"). The remastering job by Rudy Van Gelder is superb. There is not a dull moment in this highly recommended 54 minute CD.Green Street Overview

Original Guitar Hero ReviewWhen I listen to this CD, I can't decide if I'm listening with a Jazz musician's ear or if I'm listening for simple sheer enjoyment of the tunes. The tunes as well as the solos are blistering yet catchy. A showcase for virtuosos who don't forget they're creating music with other people. It's wonderful.
Unfortunately, the CD is VERY short. And like ALL of Christian's recordings, even though I love the entire Benny Goodman band, I never feel like there's enough Charlie Christian.
The sound recording is as good as you'll get for the 40's. It doesn't get better than this. You'll be amazed at how good the quality is.
This CD is definitely worthy of a space in your collection.Original Guitar Hero Overview

Guitar Virtuoso ReviewJoe Pass is one of my favorite musicians and guitarists in any genre. This boxed set, while not cheap, is worth the pricetag. The sound quality and packaging are very good (a few of the cuts could have sounded better in my opinion. For example, the cuts from the "Virtuoso" album where Joe's plays an electric guitar acoustically (apparently because his amp died on the session, according to the accompanying booklet))- but the remastering makes the best of the situation). The 63 cuts in this collection are taken from 29 different albums (by my count), giving an excellent overview of Joe's talent. It should be noted that Joe played on many more albums than are represented in this set. I trust that this compilation (produced by Eric Miller; Norman Granz's partner and producer on most of Joe's original recordings) represents highlights from Joe's work. I was not familiar with most of the standards in the collection, so it is harder for me to appreciate the "melodic witticisms" that Joe brings out in them. However, I do find his sense of harmony and melody extrodinary. Joe's tone is different from most modern-day Jazz guitarists. I don't think there is a single cut where he uses an effect like Chorus. Most of the time, Joe plays the electric or nylon-string acoustic with his bare fingers. It is definitely different than say a Metheney or a Wes Montogomery sound - not better, not worse... just different. Also, he rarely seems to record with a muted tone - which seems to be in vogue these days. At first I was dissapointed that there was so much vocal music on disc four (mostly with Ella Fitzgerald), but now I admit that these are some of my favorites and they show a totally different side to Joe's playing (and Ella is fantastic... I'm now a fan of her work too!). One of the amazing things about this set is you realize just how developed Joe was at the start of his Pablo career - his approach doesn't seem to change on any of the songs. I'm not saying his playing is redundant, it is just that you realize how mature he was when he started with Pablo records in 1972. There is a wealth of superb performances on this collection, my favorites (besides the solo stuff) are the duo and group recordings - in particular with Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Duke Ellington, Zoot Sims, John Pisano, Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson, Ray Brown and Jimmy Rowles. Besides classical guitarists, Joe Pass is the only Jazz guitarist I know that can make his instrument "fill" like a piano when playing solo yet NOT sound cluttered when playing with a pianist. If you like standards (although there are plenty of originals here) and improvisational Jazz guitar, I consider this set a must have. However, if you are simply a fan of jazz, you could do much worse than spending ... on this boxed set. I give it my highest recommendation.Guitar Virtuoso OverviewJust as Art Tatum could make a piano sound like an orchestra, Joe Pass could do the same with a guitar, and this four-CD distillation of his Pablo recordings features him in a variety of settings, both live and studio, solo and group, and acoustic and electric. And disc four features him as an oh-so-sympathetic accompanist for artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Benny Green's commentary in the booklet is a must-read, too. 63 tracks, highlighted by a frenetic Sweet Georgia Brown with Oscar Peterson and a live, 10-minute Stompin' at the Savoy !

6 String Theory ReviewEveryone needs a few CDs in their arsenal to use as, "Show Off" recordings for their car audio system or home stereo. This is one of them. The mix, clarity and production of this CD is outstanding. Crank it up!
The music is great too. I became a fan of Lee Ritenor after picking up his "Wesbound" CD on which he pays tribute to Wes Montgomery. But make no mistake, this is NOT a smooth jazz recording. It's a mix of blues, jazz, fusion, rock and even classical. There's something here for everyone.
