Instrumental Moods Review"Instrumental Moods" continues the "Moods" series of New Age music. It is probably the weakest "Moods" CD, but then again, these are instrumental songs, so they don't have any searing vocals in them. The few vocals that *are* in the songs have no real lyric to them. Here's a quick run-through of the ones I liked:
1. "In the Full Moon Light"--3rd Force. A jazzy instrumental dance piece combining piano, percussion and some kind of brass instrument that sounds like a trumpet. Very cool, great opener.
2. "Knocking on Forbidden Doors"--Enigma. A very nice piece, and certainly worthy of being in the "Instrumental Moods" compilation. Just remember that since it is instrumental, it is not one of this artist's best works.
3. "Barcelona Nights"--Ottoman Liebert. A peppy flamenco song featuring distinctive percussion and guitar work. It's sure to make you sweat!
7. "Tempest"--Jesse Cook. Another flamenco song, but a bit more contemporary than "Barcelona Nights", and just as much fun to listen to!
8. "Cliffs of Dover"--Eric Johnson. A great electric guitar instrumental, and the only roof-shaker on the CD. Curiously, however, it reminds me more of Hawaiian surfers than cliffs in Delaware.
10. "Weather Storm"--Massive Attack. See #2.
13. "Widescreen"--Vanessa Mae. An achingly beautiful song, featuring a seductively played violin.
14. "Gabriel's Oboe"--Ennio Morricone. A slow song, featuring the soothing sounds of an oboe. A wonderful example of the brilliant soundtrack for "The Mission".
15. "Cristofori's Dream"--David Lanz. This exquisite piano piece has the honor of being the most beautiful song I've ever heard, and my favorite one on the album. It's also in "Pure Moods III".
"Monteczuma" and "Cradelsong (Dawa)" are two good songs that are also in "Pure Moods II", but "Monteczuma" is much shorter in this CD, and this edition of "Cradlesong (Dawa)" doesn't feature Cherokee Rose, so if you're only buying this CD for those two songs, just stick with "Pure Moods II".
The rest of the songs ("Heat [from The Fifth Element]", "Midnight Express", "Samba Pa Ti", "Sure-As-Not", "Gathering of the Tribes") are just dull, forgettable techno. However, I would still say that this CD is worth buying, and is certainly one of the best instrumental compilations out there. A "Pure Moods IV" will be released in October--I can hardly wait until then!Instrumental Moods Overview

Beverly Hills Cop II: The Motion Picture Soundtrack Album ReviewWhereas the first Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack was a celebration of 80's electropop, the second one shows a split between rock and R&B/pop, with multiple producers. And hey, they had three Top Ten songs, including a #1 and #2. And three of the songs ended up on the artist/group's albums, making this soundtrack a launching pad of sorts.
"Shakedown" was yet another soundtrack song for Bob Seger, and this time, he hit the top, with its infectious backbeat thanks to rapid-fire keyboards and some soulful backing vocals in the chorus. If this sounds like a Billy Idol song, it's because Keith Forsey was one of the producers, the other being Harold Faltermeyer, who did one of the best songs on the first BHC movie and fresh from the Top Gun Theme.
Forsey produces another track here, Charlie Sexton's "In Deep", whose fiery guitar solos and power synths and keyboards might work for Sexton but is something Forsey's star client, Billy Idol wouldn't touch with a barge pole.
Canadian singer Corey Hart has a good turn with the inoffensive 80's pop of "Hold On," with its jingly synths, pulsing rhythm guitar, all produced by Giorgio Moroder.
The only other group from the first movie to do a song here are the Pointer Sisters with "Be There." Despite the brassy horns, rattling drums, and Narada Michael Walden's production, this song is half-hearted, showing the trio's last bit of oomph was 1985's "Dare Me."
George Michael sure picked some way to introduce his second solo hit, his first being "A Different Corner," due to the unnecessary controversy created by the title and the alleged meaning of the song. "I Want Your Sex" made it to #2 despite the brouhaha. Hey, it has a good backbeat, and a real underlying message: "It's natural, it's chemical, it's logical, habitual" And of course it ended up on his Grammy-winning Faith album.
The last couple of songs are firmly in the soul/R&B area. Former Prince guitarist Andre Cymone produced two tracks here. The first is James Ingram's "Better Way" which is typical 80's R&B/soul with some accompanying horns. This song though doesn't do justice to Ingram's voice, as he's done better. The second is Pebbles' funky jam "Love/Hate" which sounds like a refugee from Janet Jackson's Control album. This also landed on Pebbles' self-titled debut.
Yet another song that ended up on the group's album is the Jets' bouncy crossover pop "Cross My Broken Heart" also on the Jets' Magic album. If the beat resembles early Madonna, it's because the song was co-written and co-produced by Stephen Bray, a songwriting collaborator on Like A Virgin.
And then, those guys who imitated Prince with "Oh Sheila"--Ready For The World. This time, they demand "36 Lovers," as extravagant a demand as their synths. The sound's more pedestrian soul-pop.
Sue Ann's "I Can't Stand It" recalls brassy Pointer Sisters fare like "I'm So Excited" and THIS is the kind of stuff the Pointers should've been doing here. Jermaine Jackson's synth-happy "All Revved Up" makes him another Giorgio Moroder client, but Moroder did better for Hart earlier in the album.
Not a bad album in itself, with numbers by Seger, Michael, Hart, Pebbles, and the Jets pulling the weight here.Beverly Hills Cop II: The Motion Picture Soundtrack Album Overview

Gypsy Soul: New Flamenco ReviewThis is not traditional flamenco, but rather a mixture of flamenco, Latin and jazz wrapped together to make for seventy-minutes of pure listening joy. The flamenco style is definitely the overlying theme of the album filled with tremolos, rasgueos, glopes and lightning-fast runs. Everyone that appears on this album is a master of the guitar, from those you'd expect like Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola to those who will surprise you, namely Slash. Fourteen tracks and sixteen amazing pickers provide a varied flavor for this album.
Jesse Cook starts the album with "Rattle and Burn" and sets the tone with this rumba-sounding piece. His melody comes off effortless with elegant ease. A very nice sounding piece. There is something special about two or more guitars playing at the same time, which makes "Heat of the Sun" from Strunz and Farah a joy to listen to. Each guitarist has their own voice and they counterbalance each other well. Plus, the speed of these guys is unbelievable. A more classic sounding piece comes from Oscar Lopez from his piece "Fire and Fury". Lopez is a master of the guitar and music as can be seen from the way he changes speeds throughout this piece with fingers a blur. Ruben Romero turns in the star performance of this album with his rendition of "Malaguena". His slow intro gives way to increasing speed, and his techniques will leave your jaw dropped.
Compilations like "Gypsy Soul" are great in exposing you to many artists at one time each with their own sound and nuances. This allows you to follow up with the artists that you enjoy the most. There isn't a dud on this album, and the talent and sound will leave you begging for more.Gypsy Soul: New Flamenco Overview

City on a Hill: It's Christmas Time ReviewCity on the Hill takes its trademark worship focus and applies it to Christmas. The result is a must buy.
The strength of this project is its new songs. Five of the six are absolute winners bringing a truly new spirit of worship to the holiday season. My favorites (and it's hard to choose) are "Child of Love," a lullaby for Mary that first Christmas night, and "Bethlehem Town" which juxtaposes the joy of Christ's birth with the pain and horror of his death. I always enjoy songs that remind us of why He ultimately came. Ironically enough, it's the title song that I don't especially like. It just seems so much less inspired then the others.
The other half of the songs on the CD are traditional Christmas carols that focus on what Christmas really means. I especially enjoyed Out of Eden's take on "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and the lesser recorded "In the Bleak Midwinter." And I don't know if I've yet heard a recording of "O Holy Night" that I didn't like.
My biggest problem with this CD is that, since most of the new songs are presented first, it doesn't seem that Christmassy to me right away. However, I love it so much, I think I'll be listening to it a lot at Christmas every year, so that won't last more then another year or two. This CD is destined to become a classic.City on a Hill: It's Christmas Time Overview

Merry Axemas, Vol. 2: More Guitars For Christmas ReviewSteve Vai is a lot of things, but "compilation producer" may not leap to mind. But that's just what Steve is in his spare time, and here comes volume two of his excellent Merry Axemas instrumental "guitars for Christmas" series. The first volume featured the expected shred kings (Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson...) and the second volume brings in an array of other classic six-stringers (and one four- five- and six-stringer in session bassist Stu Hamm). Along with Stu we've got Steve Lukather, Neal Schon of Journey, Steve Stevens who you might remember from Billy Idol's 80s band, Trevor Rabin, erstwhile member of 80s Yes and the most prolific South African scoring movies today, Jersey cowboy Zakk Wylde from Ozzy Osbourne's band and Pride and Glory, metaller John Sykes from the Thin Lizzy/Tygers of Pan Tang/Whitesnake/Blue Murder, Robin Trower (second most famous utilizer of the Uni-Vibe), jam whiz Al Di Meola, and the master of fifth-chord mayhem -- and my namesake -- Ted Nugent. Every track works, even if some of them are relatively obscure Christmas songs since many of the obvious choices got used up on volume one. Standouts include Zakk Wylde setting aside his Les Pauls to play a beautiful arrangement of "White Christmas" on classical guitars; Rabin's highly-processed but lush and engaging guitar-synth take on "O Come All Ye Faithful"; and Nugent's wailing, wild, tongue-in-cheek explosion of "Deck the Halls". If you love Mannheim Steamroller you'll be made uneasy by most of these renditions...if you've always wondered how many harmonics can be fitted into a Christmas classic, or what Emmanuel would have done with a PRS and a Marshall half-stack, look no further. A guaranteed hit with any and every guitarist on your list.Merry Axemas, Vol. 2: More Guitars For Christmas Overview

The Horse Whisperer: Songs From and Inspired by the Motion Picture ReviewThis stunning collection of songs is not a soundtrack score (that is available separately) but it does include songs that were used in the movie, together with other songs of a similar type.
The album is book-ended by two cowboy classics - Dwight Yoakam singing Cattle call and George Strait singing Red river valley. Both of these men are well suited to these songs and their covers are among the best I've heard. There are new recordings of three other oldies here - Big Ball's in Cowtown (Don Walser), Cowboy love song (Don Edwards) and Whispering pines (Iris DeMent). All of these are brilliant, especially Whispering pines. It is a pity that Iris only seems to record songs for multi-artist projects these days - a new album of her own would be much appreciated.
The other songs were all new at the time. Of these, the standout is A soft place to fall, by Allison Moorer. Allison is the sister of Shelby Lynne and her contribution to the soundtrack marked her recording debut. It gave her vital exposure. The song appeared on her first full-length album. Allison, like Shelby, has her own ideas about what sort of material she wants to record, so while her first three albums have been of an extremely high quality, she has not emerged as the major star that record company executives were hoping she would become.
Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, The Flatlanders and The Mavericks all put in great performances on their songs, some of which are not available on any of their own albums.
This is an excellent album which helped to re-awaken interest in western music, deservedly so.The Horse Whisperer: Songs From and Inspired by the Motion Picture OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: Soundtracks & ScoresMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 7-APR-1998

Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan ReviewStevie Ray Vaughan without a doubt is one of the greatest blues guitarist, and song writers that ever lived. I have been a long time Stevie Ray Vaughan fan when the tribute CD came out I was anxious to here people like jimmie vaughan, bonnie rait, bb. king, eric clapton, robert cray, and dr.john. I bought this not too long ago since I have never got around to it. I have been so caught up with newer releases like the Stevie Ray Vaughan Box Set that I forget to buy some of that other stuff. Anyways I thought in all this CD was another great thing that happened to the blues power of steive ray vaughan.
The guitarist's on here are truely great all of them have a different style thats what I really liked about this CD no one copied stevie note for note or tried to be just like him because every guitarist is different from another. The first track on this CD is Bonnie Raitt: Pride And Joy. Her version was way different from Stevie's but it was good to here a new flavor with some slide guitar. The second track is Jimmie Vaughan: Texas Flood. I also loved his texas guitar slinging playing it sounded like he was picking with his hands it was really cool. One of my favorites though is the next song performed by B.B King titled Telephone Song here is the coolest blues jam. The next one is titled Long Way Home by Buddy Guy. My favorite song on this album was Eric Clapton's version of Ain't Gone 'N Give Up On Your Love. Then their was Robert Cray's Love Struck Baby, Dr. John Cold Shot, All of the guitarist for Six String Down, All of the guitarist for Tick Tock, and all of the guitairist for the SRV Shuffle. Dont get me wrong this is one of the best tribute CD's that was ever put together their is great blues guitar playing on here any true fan, or guitarist would want. Highly Recomended!!Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan OverviewSTEVIE RAY VAUGHAN/VARIOUS A Tribute To Stevie Ray Vaughan(1996 US 10-track CD album features Eric Clapton Bonnie Raitt B.B.King Robert Cray and more picture sleeve EK57599)

Crucial Rockin Blues ReviewTHIS IS AN EXCELLENT SELECTION OF MULTI-ARTIST ELECTRIC BLUES. SUPRISINGLY A NUMBER OF THE SONGS ARE VERY RECENT, SUCH AS COCO MONTOYA'S "LAST DIRTY DEAL" ONE OF THE BEST FROM HIS RECENT RELEASE. TINSLEY ELLIS' "THE NEXT MISS WRONG" IS TINSLEY AT HIS ABSOLUTE BEST. PERFORMING A FOOT STOMPING, ROADHOUSE COOKER! DAVE HOLE IS HIS USUAL MAGICAL, WHIMISICAL, AUSTRALIAN, SLIDE MASTER, WITH HIS GUITAR JUMPING AROUND, LIKE AN UNATTENDED WATER HOSE TURNED ON FULL THROTTLE! GUITAR SHORTY'S SONG "i'M GONNA LEAVE YOU" IS PROBABLY HIS BEST COMBINATION OF STRING BENDING AND VOICE YET RELEASED. THE ONLY NEGATIVE IS THE ATTEMPT OF ROY BUCHANAN, REDOING THE ALL-TIME ROCK CLASSIC BY EDWIN STARR, "25 MILES"! IF YOU'RE GOING TO REBUILD THE STATUE OF LIBERTY, DON'T USE POPSICLE STICKS, USE GOLD! (ANOTHER BAD EXAMPLE IS OCEANS ELEVEN) IN SUMMARY, THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE STEAL AT $8.00! SHAQ "THE KING OF THE WORLD BLUES REVIEWER'S" SAYS BUY IT! P.S. SONG #2 "ROUTE 90" BY JOHNNY WINTER IS ROLLICKING GOOD FUN, BUT IT SURE SOUNDS LIKE "SURFIN U.S.A. BY THE BEACH BOYS!Crucial Rockin Blues Overview

6 String Theory ReviewEveryone needs a few CDs in their arsenal to use as, "Show Off" recordings for their car audio system or home stereo. This is one of them. The mix, clarity and production of this CD is outstanding. Crank it up!
The music is great too. I became a fan of Lee Ritenor after picking up his "Wesbound" CD on which he pays tribute to Wes Montgomery. But make no mistake, this is NOT a smooth jazz recording. It's a mix of blues, jazz, fusion, rock and even classical. There's something here for everyone.
I HIGHLY recommend this record!6 String Theory Overview

The Classical Album 2005 ReviewFirst, let me begin by saying that I am by no means an expert in classical music, but have grown to appreciate it immensely in the past year. I can say wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful compilation of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's simple irresistible. There are few words to describe how emotional it is to hear Pavarotti sing "II Canto", or Placido Domingo belt out "Questa o quella". You just get numb with joy!! I have NO idea what they are saying but a translation not necessary. The entire collection (TWo jammed-packed CDs) is phenomenal (excluding the selections from "Bond" which I found to be particularly annoying and not at all "classical" in the true sense of the word). There is something here for everyone, regardless of your personal musical tastes or tolerances.
A guaranteed hit -- Don't miss this one.
CD One
Andrea Bocelli "En Aranjuez con tu amor"
Bryn Terfel - "Granada"
Bond - "Viva" ( not my favorite, sounds almost disco-ish)
Hayley Westenra - "Pokarekare Ana"
Luciano Pavarotti - "Una Mattina"
Katherine jenkins - "Time To Say Goodbye" (a heart stopper - so beautiful!)
Duel - "Canon" (lovely!)
Janine Jansen - "Allegro from 'Spring'"
Andreas Scholl - "Ombra mai fu"
Nigel Kennedy - "The Unknown Soldier"
Kiri Te Kanawa - "Nuns' Chorus"
Nelson Freire - "Chopin Etude No. 1 op. 25
Julian Lloyd Webber - "Flight of the Bumble-bee"
James Horner - "For the Love of a Princess
Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard "Now We Are Free"
Renee Fleming - "Mesicku na nebi hlubokem"
Russell Watson - "Amore e Musica"
CD TWO
Luciano Pavarotti - "II Canto" (I MUST see him sing this in person!!)
Placido Domingo - "Questa o quello" (I never tire of hearing this)
Andrea Bocelli & Bryn Terfel - "the Pearl Fisher's Duet"
Jose Carreras - "Funiculi, funicula
Dominc Miller & Kaori Muraji - "Fragile"
Tavener - "Song for Athene"
Josep Calleja - "La donna e mobile"
Jean-Yves Thibaudet - "Gymopedie No. 1"
Juan Diego Florez - "Una furtiva lagrima"
Kathleen Ferrier - "Blow the Wind Southerly"
Angela Gheorghiu - "Ave Maria"
Janine Jansen - "Schindler's List Main Theme"
Bond - "explosive"
Secret Garden - "You Raise Me Up"
Hayley Westenra - "Never Say Goodbye"
The Three Tenors - "Nessun Dorma"
Enjoy!

Merry Axemas ReviewWell, I guess the title and cover art are sufficient warning, but this is a truly wild, over the edge guitar treatment of Christmas music, and I wouldn't bring this CD with you for Christmas dinner with Aunt Minnie or Uncle Joe.
But if you are into this style of guitar, you'll love this. It may well be the one and only Christmas album you have, and the sheer dissonant, loud energy of most of the CD might well upset traditionalists. But this is Christmas as expressed from the perception of the guitarists, and therefore is more than legitimate. Standouts? "Joy To The World" was my personal favorite. Poor Rudolph practically gets slaughtered in the first cut, but I don't say that in a mean spirit. This entire CD is for those who relish the sheer sound, fury, and energy, and yes, the innovation of this style of guitar.
But don't expect Windham Hill. LOLMerry Axemas OverviewGuitar/metal Compilation Produced by Steve Vai. Japanese Release to Coantain an Exclusive Bonus Track.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Ultimate Pickin': The Best of Instrumental Bluegrass ReviewI don't know where these guys all hail from, but the sound of this pretty enjoyable album is that of bluegrass-trained Nashille-session caliber players, for better or worse. The tunes are note for note perfect, but they don't always sounds like they are really jamming or enjoying themselves. If you've been raised on new grass or West Coast-style bluegrass (that would be me), this disk sounds a little cold, a little too fresh-out-of-the -bluegrass-conservatory. On some of the songs like Forked Deer, Foggy Mountain Special, Leather Britches, and St. Anne's Reel, this group of ultimate-ace-pickers sounds like they are enjoying themselves and letting loose. But some of the tunes just sound rotely virtuosic (Clinch Mountain Backstep, eg.) So I would recommend this disk to someone who is already a lover of this music and who wants a great chronicle of key tunes performed well, some of which are standouts, others of which sound like the musicians must be getting paid by the note. There are no doubt more soulful versions of these tunes elsewhere, but there is no doubt that these great players have their hearts and chops in the right place.Ultimate Pickin': The Best of Instrumental Bluegrass Overview

Narada Decade: The Anniversary Collection: Selected Works: The First Ten Years (2-CD Set) ReviewI really love this two-disk collection. The music is very peaceful and calming, while still being musically interesting. I find myself humming many of the melodies throughout the day, as they are very catching. This CD has had heavy playing time since I bought it; I listen to it while studying, reading, cooking, etc. It rarely ever gets stored on the shelf--more like a permanent home next to the cd player, if not *in* the cd player. Desert Guitar ReviewThe guitar music (with spare accompaniment) on this CD broadened my horizons in a number of ways; and the unobtrusive superb nature sounds, such as desert songbirds, migrating geese, hoot-owls, wind, horses, coyotes!, trickling water, distant rain and thunder, singing frogs, chanting insects - are seamless segues between the original, simple - by no means whatsoever simplistic - compositions, which themselves approach the sublime. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find out from Northsound Music who the musicians were on this recording (so I could obtain more of it!); there is precise studio production here also, but in no way does it sound "canned" or overdone for its idiom; it is flawless thematically and in execution ("Desert Night" is particularly nice). This music has accompanied me mentally for about 10 years now; I go through seasons when I listen to it almost ritualistically: on a cold, dry, weekend morning, coffee infused with the scent of sagebrush and diesel fumes. I am listening to it now, and I feel myself transported to Apache Pass beneath Grand Canyon down to Tucson skirting Sandia on over to Big Bend where the Rio Bravo is wild; on to Guadalupe Mountain in Far West Texas; also to the high deserts of the Great Basin where Northern Nevada, Eastern Oregon and Southern Idaho converge in the Snake River drainage on its way to the sea. Somehow, for me, Desert Guitar captures a sense of those geographical epiphanies and a deep sense of place. The first half of the CD introduces styles inherent to the Spanish-tuned, nylon (or gut) stringed guitars: some lively yet restrained fingerwork, flamenco-influence, punctuated with articulated flat-picking - a curious, percussive sound both plaintive and bold, that only a guitar can produce. The middle of the thematic journey evokes torrid days drenched with sun and sweat. The latter third of the disc invites cooling imagery, of big sky vistas, purple and orange, sharp shadows, disruptive patterns. Weaving in major and minor at variegated tempo and mood, these tunes touch the heart in undiscovered places, evoking introspective moods and existential hope. It would probably sound great on the Moon! (which is also our highest desert).Desert Guitar Overview

Rock Instrumental Classics 2: 60's ReviewThis cd replaces some of the original 45's that I had back in the 60's. My favorite, "Apache" (Jorgen Ingmann), may have been a few years ahead of its time when it was released in 1961. It certainly wasn't cut from the typical mold of three or four guitars and a drummer. It was also popular enough that there was a vocal version made (can't remember who made it), but it was far from the hit that Ingmann's version was. A one hit wonder from Denmark, "Apache" made it all the way to # 2 on the US charts. "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" is a great rock version of the old Vaughan Monroe hit (late 1940's I think). The background sounds of whooping cowboys and bleeting steers adds to the flavor of the track. "No Matter What Shape" (T-Bones) was based on the popular Alka-Seltzer commercial, which I remember very well. In fact, the T-Bones 33 1/3 album of the same name (which I still have) features a scene from the commercial, one man poking the very large protruding stomach of another man. "Bulldog" (Fireballs) is one of those rock insturmentals that you simply cannot avoided tapping your toes to but don't hear on the oldies station. The rest of the cd is just as enjoyable, a great addition if you like instrumentls.Rock Instrumental Classics 2: 60's Overview

Merry Axemas - Guitar Christmas ReviewI originally discovered this CD several years ago after becoming familiar with Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO). I love the blend of hard rock with Christmas music and decided to search out other similar CDs. This particular CD is probably next in line to TSO as being the best out there, although I can't say that definitively as I have yet to hear everything that is available.
However, if you love guitar based rock music and Christmas music, you definitely can't go wrong here. There is not one bad song on this disc and the flow of the music from start to finish is well arranged. I don't find myself getting disinterested at any point. The songs by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Joe Perry are the best in my mind but all the others are very good as well. Jeff Beck's version of Amazing Grace gives me goosebumps and Richie Sambora performing O Holy Night is another one that will elicit some emotion.
All together, this collection of songs is very underrated and deserves more attention from those seeking this type of music.Merry Axemas - Guitar Christmas Overview

Folk Hits of the 60s ReviewOnly five of these songs were recorded outside the time frame of 1960-1965, and only "Both Sides Now" was written after that time. During this time period, folk music usually fell within one of two groups. There was the political/protest music camp. And then there was the folk/pop group. Nearly all of these songs fall in the latter category. In fact, all but Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" and Joan Baez's rendition of the Phil Ochs-penned "There But for Fortune" landed in the Top 40 of the pop charts.
While several of these artists have the pedigree as protest singers (Joan Baez, The Weavers, Woody Guthrie), the focus here is clearly on listener-friendly songs. But even with the compiler's intent to put the focus on folk-lite, it seems a bit of a stretch to include Gale Garnett's "We'll Sing in the Sunshine," and The Wonder Who's version of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" is almost unlistenable. [Note: The Wonder Who is Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, who took this song to No. 12 in 1965!]
With that said, if you like your folk music sanitized and the rough edges smoothed over, this is a very listenable and enjoyable album. The only glaring omission from this collection is the absence of anything by Peter, Paul and Mary. [It would have made more sense to use THEIR hit version of "Don't Think Twice"!] All things considered, this is a delightful album from start to finish. RECOMMENDEDFolk Hits of the 60s Overview
