El Barroco Español: Spanish Secular Music, c.1640-1700 ReviewThis is a great recording by Hesperion XX. Jordi Savall, called for an ensanble of first class instrumentalists. Some of the most prominent scholars, perform in this recording. Lutenist,Hopkinson Smith,a graduate from Harvard, is today one of a respected lute soloist.Ton Koopman plays the harpsichord in this recording, he is today conductor of one of the foremost early music group around, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. He plays in this recording three solo pieces by the Spanish composer,Juan Bautista Cabanilles.Christophe Coin, plays the viola da gamba,he is also a first class cellist in field of early music performance,he has performed with groups such as the Academy of Ancient Music, under C.Hughwood,Mr.Cin displays himself in this recording, with his performance of "La Folia" a set of variations in a popular tune by Martin y Coll.Soprano Moserrat Figueras was splendid in this recording too, this was her first colaboration with Jordi Savall. My favorite track were#3"Peynandose Estaba un Olmo".The quality of the recording is great for a re-issue.The only problem was that the liner notes failed to tell about the performers.El Barroco Español: Spanish Secular Music, c.1640-1700 Overview

Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) ReviewI saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra two years back when they did a Christmas show here in Wisconsin, and I'm seeing them this holiday season as well, so I figured this would be a great disc to buy. And was I ever right! This disc does a much better job of capturing the fun atmosphere and high energy music of the band than their previous DVD release did. The band sounds just as good as they do on both of their Christmas CD's, and watching the band mambers get into the music while playing it, makes it even more fun for the viewer. The highlight of the disc (and of their live show in general) is when they play the "Nutcracker Suite" for an encore. While often considered a "novelty" swing band, the Nutcracker really shows that all members of the band are world-class musicians first and foremost. It was good to see a few non-Christmas Setzer classics in the playlist, but "Rumble in Brighton" and "Fishnet Stockings" seem odd choices for a Christmas show. Overall, great Christmas fun for all viewers, and I highly recommend it!Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) Overview

We Wish You a Metal Xmas & A Headbanging New ReviewI have purchased quite a few Rock Christmas compilations, but none have been as well arranged, produced and recorded as this one. Those that say this is stupid must be turned off by the "Christ" part of the equation on this CD because it is stock full of great Hard Rock guitar solos and searing vocals. NOTHING on this CD is stupid musically. As a matter of fact, I don't know of any other compilation that I have heard that contains as much talent as this CD does (and it shows).
First off, however, I would like to point out that the track listing supply by Amazon's description was not accurate as the following is the track list for the copy they sent me:
1. We Wish You A Merry Xmas
Jeff Scott Soto / Bruce Kulick / Bob Kulick/ Chris Wyse / Ray Luzier
2. Run Rudolph Run
Lemmy / Billy F Gibbons / Dave Grohl
3. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Alice Cooper / John 5 / Billy Sheehan / Vinny Appice
4. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Ronnie James Dio / Tony Iommi / Rudy Sarzo / Simon Wright
5. Silver Bells
Geoff Tate / Carlos Cavazo / James Lomenzo / Ray Luzier
6. Little Drummer Boy
Dug Pinnick / George Lynch / Billy Sheehan / Simon Phillips
7. Santa Claus Is Back In Town
Tim 'Ripper' Owens / Steve Morse / Juan Garcia / Marco Mendoza / Vinny Appice
8. Silent Night
Chuck Billy / Scott Ian / Jon Donais / Chris Wyse / John Tempesta
9. Deck the Halls
Oni Logan / Craig Goldy / Tony Franklin / John Tempesta
10. Grandma Got Ran Over By A reindeer
Stephen Pearcy / Tracii Guns / Bob Kulick / Billy Sheehan / GregBissonette
11. Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree
Joe Lynn Turner / Bruce Kulick / Bob Kulick / Rudy Sarzo / Simon Wright
12. Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Tommy Shaw / Steve Lukather / Marco Mendoza / Kenny Aronoff Song Reviews:
We Wish You a Merry Xmas - The guitars are awesome. Great solos. And the Drums are very prominent, giving the song a heavy feel.
Run Rudolph Run - Billy Gibbons tears up the guitars on this song and Limmy puts his Motorhead stamp on it his raw gravely vocals.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town - The song starts out with a creepy S-A-N-T-A C-L-A-W-S chant by Alice Cooper and then rocks it's way in the traditional lyrics with a sound only Alice Cooper could give it.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - to me, this song stands out slightly over the rest of the album. Dio's vocals are in top form and the guitars are extremely heavy on this version. It sounds like it belongs on a Black Sabbath record.
Silver Bells - Although the guitars on this song are over the top, the vocals feel a little out of place on this one. Geoff Tate has the vocals to fill a stadium, but I'm not sure I like him singing a jingle like this.
Little Drummer Boy - Starts with a heavy drum beat and then Dug Pinnick adds his voice perfectly for this song. This is by far my favorite version of this song ever. George Lynch adds some great guitar licks to the song and you can hear Billy Sheehan laying down a nice rhythm on bass.
Santa Claus is Back in Town - Tim Owens sings like he normally does and it works well on this song. But the best part of the song is the guitars by Steve Morse.
Silent Night - This is the only song on the CD that I do not like. It's not because of the guitars because they are great. It's because of the vocals. I HATE the growling vocal trend that so many Death Metal bands use today. That is how the vocals are done on this song and it makes me feel as though he is straining on the toilet throughout the entire song. That's just my taste, I am sure some will like it. I will have to say that there is one of the best guitar solos on the record in the middle of this song.
Deck the Halls - Solid vocals round out a song full of (one again) great guitar work.
Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer - I thought that there was no way this song could be made into a true rocker. I was wrong. The main guitar riff on this song is awesome.
Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree - Yet again, the guitars on this song kick you in the face. This song has a real blues feel .
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - This is the only truly slow song on the CD. Tommy Shaw does a great job on vocals and ends the CD with a calm tune that brings you down slowly from the rush of the pure adrenaline of the previous 11 songs.
Anyone that says this CD is stupid has clearly not listened to it. It may not be for you if you don't celebrate Christmas, but don't skip out on this simply because you think it's not a Hard Rock record. I was very impressed. I also bought "We Wish You A Hairy Christmas" and although it has its moments, it does not even compare to this one. If you celebrate Christmas and like Hard Rock, you will LOVE this CD.

Cool Yule ReviewThis is one incredible Christmas CD from Bette Midler. Bette's first Christmas album is full of great renditions of the standards of this time of year including "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas;" "Ill Be Home For Christmas;" "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?;" "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "White Christmas." Bette throws in a lot of her own pizzazz and wonderful eggnog with a new song "Cool Yule" and she does a wonderful duet with Johnny Mathis as they perform "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" Terrific!
The CD opens strong with "Merry Christmas." This song boasts a great musical arrangement and Bette's voice is in excellent form--as it is throughout this album! Then the CD shifts gears and revs up the motors a little bit with "Cool Yule." This song, written by Steve Allen with additional lyrics by Eric Kornfeld, is a lot of fun and you'll be eager to listen to it again and again!
Another fun song on this CD is "Mele Kalikimaka." This is how to say "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian; this adds a very personal touch to the CD because Bette was born in the state of Hawaii. It offers a great musical composition that starts off with a brief romantic flavor and then twists into a very catchy tune! Could this be a new classic in the making? I think this song will become increasingly popular with time as it is very well written and Bette does a great job with it. The numerous background vocalists are wonderful as well.
Bette Midler fans will recognize the special Christmas version of "From A Distance." It is touching as it was when it was first released and it remains just as relevant today as it was when it was first released in 1990. Newcomers will enjoy this special song as well.
I especially like how Bette masterfully handles the romantic, sentimental lyrics of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as well as "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" Bette breathes new life into these standards with her beautiful voice, energy and passion.
The quality of the sound is excellent even on a portable CD player. The liner notes are wonderful, too. There are nice photos of Bette both in the liner notes and on the back of the CD artwork, too. You get the song credits and there's a well written essay by Jay Landers. Nice!
Overall, I would recommend this CD for Bette Midler fans and anyone who appreciates beautifully arranged Christmas music. Bette's voice has never sounded better and I applaud her fine efforts to make her first Christmas CD a splendid reality. "Mele Kalikimaka" to you!SMILES
Cool Yule OverviewThis is Bette's first ever Holiday album! Bette delivers the ultimate present - Cool Yule!Experience the excellence of Bette's vocals with delightfully lush arrangements that will help you get into that Holiday spirit! If you are a fan of Bette's, this is a CD you MUST have! It is includes the new holiday version of "From A Distance" with orchestration by Robbie Buchanan and Noel-inspired lyrics. This album is sure to become a new holiday favorite!

Brad Paisley Christmas ReviewPrime Cuts: Penguin, James Penguin, Santa Looked A lot Like Daddy, I'll Be Home for Christmas
Santa's secret spies, confronting Christmas addictive withdrawals, and daddy playing dress-ups: these are sacred totems associated with the yuletide for Brad Paisley. While many a Christmas CD offers punctilious readings of traditional carols stuck in a mire of saccharine sentimentality, Paisley's debut holiday effort shows personality. Ingenuity and his ingrained humor get the upper hand as this country superstar revels in the frolicsome candor of the festive season. However, not all is frivolous fun, on certain tracks Paisley does essay the lofty message of Christmas and its sentiments via some of most timely formidable carols of yore performed with a romantic valor and thoughtful impeccability. Though this is a seasonal detour, stylistically "A Brad Paisley Christmas" does not sidestep too far away from Paisley's typical country outings. Just as his albums has never been monolithic; a bit of everything represented on this CD: from romantic lush ballads, to spitfire honk tonk to revved up rock to an instrumental as well as a few nods to Paisley's comical side.
The more interesting tracks here are the originals, of which there are four. Paisley ups the ante on his narrative skills on the jovial narrative about Santa's secret spy that goes by the moniker "Penguin, James Penguin." Told with a tickle of cheekiness, "Penguin, James Penguin" ought to add Christmas cheer to kids as well as bring a seasonal smile to adults. Much less colorful is the laconic "364 Days to Go" a wry cynical bluesy-ballad about the obsessive entanglements of the holidays. Sharing the microphone again with the Paisley-created the Kung Pao Buckaroos -- otherwise known as Little Jimmy Dickens, George Jones, and Bill Anderson -"Kung Pao Holidays" is a satire of the notion of "political correctness" basked by a comedic sonic veneer. On a much sober and traditional tenor, "Born on Christmas Day" features Paisley when he was 13 years old trading verses with himself (towards the end) on a self-penned Southern-Gospel-like ballad detailing the story of Christ's birth.
Even when Paisley delves into the traditional canon of yuletide favorites, he is not content to offer a straight reading. Listen especially to the lyrical changes to "Santa Looked A Lot like Daddy" for his personal augmentation that brings out another humorous dimension. While on "I'll Be Home For Christmas," co-producer Frank Rogers and Paisley himself, went all the way to provide a dreamy string-laden backing, thus creating one of the most romantic renditions since Tony Bennett's rendition. On the other hand, the reverent singing of "Silent Night" is a tad on the dull side. This is only redeemed by "Away in a Manger" which receives a revved up honky tonk treatment. Though guitar accolades may find much to celebrate over the instrumental "Jingle Bells," it does nothing to the musically illiterate.
As far as Christmas CDs go, "Brad Paisley's Christmas" strikes a balance between the season's sacred as well as its more jovial side. Yet most winsome is that Paisley's at home in both turfs. Whether he delves into the spiritual message of the importance of Christ's birth or just cracking jokes with the Kung Pao Buckaroos over appropriate language in holiday tunes, Paisley sounds at ease. If there's a pickle to pick, it's that the album has too few tracks. Nevertheless, with Paisley displaying his colorful personality throughout the CD, there's not a dull moment during Brad Paisley's Christmas.Brad Paisley Christmas Overview

The Ventures' Christmas Album Reviewi ordered this from amazon and am just now giving it my second listen through ... nothing quite puts you in that xmas spirit like "walk, don't run," blending into "sleigh bells." (unless it's james brown's, "santa claus, go straight to the ghetto.")
everything that every reviewer said here is on the mark. if you're familiar with instrumental surf, this album is simply a *must*. if you're intimate with the ventures, i challenge to listen to this album and not laugh out loud at least once.
the ONLY reason i ding it a star is it clocks in at 27 minutes. say what? even in the vinyl days this would be considered a short board on the big wave of music.
so yeah, maybe the original was just that long, but hey, the publisher could've put *something* else on that space ... other ventures, other surf band xmas songs, a 2-fer with something cool, dick dale's "hava nagila," SOMEthin' ...The Ventures' Christmas Album Overview

Guitar Christmas ReviewWell, each year I bought Christmas records, and it keeps for over 5 years, collecting and listening to them fills my heart always. Now I own over 300 Christmas CDs, mainly from 40s to 70s. Of them, I found Booker T and MG's "In the Christmas Spirit" and the Venture's are adorable to me the most. To be noted here, I wanna say is not about how great this CD is, but that in fact, this CD is just a reissue under another new title, the original "Christmas Joy." Funny? yeah, you got it! If you do not mind how and what this great CD is called, buy it! It is of course for the reason that this "Guitar Christmas" is cheaper than "Christmas Joy" album, but, the most important, you can still gain equal fun in this great stuff.Guitar Christmas Overview

Puss In Boots ReviewGiven the worldwide success of the Shrek franchise, it was only a matter of time before we started seeing spinoffs, and so it comes as no surprise that the fall of 2011 sees the release of Puss in Boots. The feline lover-and-fighter quickly became an enormously popularly character following his initial appearance in Shrek 2, with his swashbuckling ways, his flirtatious voice (provided by Antonio Banderas), and his secret weapon - big, adorable eyes which turn grown men to jelly - and this new movie focuses solely on him. Directed by Chris Miller, the film again features Banderas as the leading voice, and is a prequel of sorts, telling the story of the events leading up to Puss's introduction to Shrek and Donkey, from Puss's point of view. The cast features the voices of Salma Hayek as Puss's paramour Kitty Softpaws, Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty, Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris as Jack and Jill, and even Guillermo Del Toro as the mysterious Moustache Man.
Taking over from Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell on musical duties is another of Hans Zimmer's Remote Control alumni, English composer Henry Jackman, who has already attracted a great deal of positive attention for himself following his generally very good work on the likes of Monsters vs. Aliens, Gulliver's Travels, and two other scores from earlier this year, X-Men First Class and the new Winnie the Pooh movie. As good as those scores were, Puss in Boots is clearly his best work to date. Taking his cues from several film music contemporaries as well classical composers Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel (whose Bolero is probably the epitome of Spanish classical music), Jackman's score is a wonderfully entertaining, high energy action-adventure score, topped with an appropriately healthy dose of Latin fire.
The first thing long-time film music fans will notice is how much of a similarity there is between this score and James Horner's Zorro scores, The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro. This is clearly intentional - temp track bleed-through at worst, loving homage at best - but is also wholly appropriate in a sort of neo-satirical way, acknowledging the fact that Banderas plays both Zorro and Puss, and that Puss is clearly a Zorro clone. This sense of tongue in cheek self-awareness runs through the entire film - and the entire Shrek series, really - and helps dispel the notion of the score being a "Zorro rip-off" and nothing more.
Written for a large orchestra with emphasis on strings and brass, as well as a vast array of Spanish and Mexican specialty instruments and percussion items, Jackman's score starts out with the energy turned up fully, and rarely lets up throughout the score's 66-minute running time. Upon hearing the opening cue, "A Bad Kitty", with its flashing guitars, flamenco-style hand claps and foot stomps, trembling castanets, resounding trumpet calls, and swirling string writing, you know what kind of experience the score has in store.
The main theme - a heroic fanfare with a romantic and passionate flourish - first appears in this cue, and is prominent throughout the rest of the score, appearing in many guises, and being played in numerous different instrumental combinations. The B-phrase of the theme is the one most clearly inspired by Horner, and generally tends to appear at moments of great emotion or pathos, where it plays as a recurring motif for Puss's heroism and gallantry, in cues such as the outstanding "Honor and Justice", the stirring "Confronting the Past", and the big finale in "The Great Terror" - the latter of which even manages to make use of Horner's favorite tension-builder, the shakuhachi bamboo flute.
The theme is especially adept at appearing in action settings, but has a mischievous edge to it in cues such as the playfully seductive pair of "Kitty Softpaws" and "Kitty-Cat Break-Out", and even a more pathos-laden stripped-down flavor in "Team Effort". In the flashback sequence of "The Orphanage", it runs through a variety of different guises as Puss recollects his kittenhood, and his first steps on the road to fame as a swordfighter, prior to him finally receiving the boots that will become his trademark; the variety of orchestral color and inventiveness in this cue, and the gamut of emotions Jackman squeezes into just over four minutes, is impressive indeed.
The action music, which first appears in "Chasing Tail" but features much more prominently in the score's second half, generally tends to be big, bold and lively, with strong rhythmic elements and a genuine sense of drama and adventure. Cues such as "That Fateful Night", the stirring "The Wagon Chase", "The Magic Beanstalk", the enormous "Golden Goose of Legend", and the aforementioned "The Great Terror" could have successfully appeared in any serious live-action western without much alteration. Similarly, the surprisingly dark "I Was Always There" uses the guitars and accordions in a different way altogether, ramping up the tension levels, before building up into a tragedy-laded and unexpectedly emotional finale.
The haunting trumpet calls, whistles, electric guitars and harmonicas of "One Leche" are excellent pastiches of vintage spaghetti western-era Ennio Morricone, and similar ideas carry through the likes of "Holy Frijoles" and parts of "Confronting the Past". Similarly, the very brief "Jack and Jill" has flavors of Hans Zimmer's `hallucinating Jack Sparrow' music from the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, although this is just a passing nod and a wink. There is also a twinkling, magical motif for the Jack and the Beanstalk sequence that reaches its zenith in "Castle in the Clouds" and the first half of the aforementioned "Golden Goose of Legend", where the soaring central melody tends to be accompanied by all manner of chimes, cooing choirs, and celestial superfluities. In a way, it's a shame that the Jack and the Beanstalk motif is destined to overshadowed by the Latin flair of the Puss theme, because it's good enough to be a main theme in its own right, and is likely to be forgotten amongst all the panache elsewhere.
In addition to his own work, Jackman also collaborated with the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero, collectively known as Rodrigo y Gabriela, whose contributions to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides earlier this year were strangely muted, but who are on top form here. Their two showpiece cues, "Diablo Rojo" and "Hanuman", are simply sensational; the speed and precision of their performances are nothing short of breathtaking. This is exactly the stuff I wanted to hear from them in Pirates of the Caribbean and didn't get, but fans of their work will absolutely love what they have brought to this project.
The album finishes with "The Puss Suite" - a superb and highly enjoyable remix of the main theme underpinned by a more contemporary electronic beat and enlivened by a Crimson Tide-style male voice choir and an occasional "olé!" befitting Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias - and "The Giant's Castle", a restatement of the fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk theme which ends the score with an appropriately magical tone.
Despite my protestations to the contrary and my assertations that it's an intentional homage, I suspect that many people will have issues with how similar Jackman's theme is to Horner's Zorro scores, and that it will result in many people decrying Puss in Boots as nothing more than a poor imitation. For me, however, to do so would be a huge injustice and a slap in the face to Jackman and all the work he has put into this score. The orchestral inventiveness, the fantastic use of the guitars and other Spanish specialty instruments, the outstanding Jack and the Beanstalk theme, and the show-stopping contributions of Rodrigo y Gabriela combine to make Puss in Boots one of the most unexpectedly engaging and entertaining score of the year, and confirms my earlier thought that Henry Jackman is poised to follow in the footsteps of Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell as possibly the most talented composer to emerge from Remote Control for many years.Puss In Boots Overview

Dig That Crazy Christmas ReviewThe Brian Setzer Orchestra has done it again. The big band orchestra has made one of the ulitmate Christmas records, and DIG THAT CRAZY CHRISTMAS needs to be part of any Christmas and music collection. Professional guitarist and singer Brian Setzer, along with his professional big band puched out yet another great piece of work. These cats can swing like no other musicians out there, and they definately know the swing genre on a professional level. Setzer adds flare to this musical art with his own amzing guitar licks of classical, jazz, and rockabily. The horns and woodwinds provide the big band with most of the pieces' melodies, but Brian and his female singers perform beautiful musical lines as well. The bass player is one cool cat, for he keeps the melody and harmony moving as he and Setzer make quick and perfect transitions of passing chords all over their bass and guitar necks. The songs off this swing record are old and new hits arranged to Setzer's unique take on the swing genre. It gives all tracks just a fun and up beat feel to their sound and makes me wonder why there aren't any Mainstream bands performing this musical art. Definately pick up DIG THAT CRAZY CHRISTMAS for the next holiday season or of course, for those out there who also celebrate Christmas In July.
Stand out tracks include:
"Dig That Crazy Santa Claus"
"Angels We Have Heard On High"
"Gettin' In The Mood (For Christmas)"
"Zat You Santa Claus?"
"My Favorite Things"
"You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?"Dig That Crazy Christmas OverviewDig The Crazy Christmas is the rockin follow up to Boogie Woogie Christmas. Features Christmas classics such as 'White Christmas', 'Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!', 'What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?' and more. Produced by Brian Setzer and Dave Darling. The Christmas Sessions ReviewMany artists change their signature sound when releasing a Christmas album, going for the more traditional sounds of 40 years ago. These CD's are instant classics that feel like old friends the first time they are spun.
Other artists decide to release Christmas CD's that stick with their normal sound, whatever that may be. These projects take a few years to grow on the listener, but they often become favorites because they offer something different from everything else. This CD falls into the second category.
Mercy Me has made a name for itself in the Christian music industry with three highly successful projects already under their belt. While I wouldn't exactly classify their sound as straight rock, they are certainly rockier then many adult contemporary artists they are often classified with. They take their guitar driven music and wrap it around some Christmas classics. The result is unsurprisingly great.
Eleven of the twelve tracks on the CD are well known standby songs like "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," "Winter Wonderland/White Christmas," "Drummer Boy," or "O Holy Night." Each track features drums and guitar heavily. For example, you can really hear the drum and bass on "O Holy Night." It's an arrangement that I wouldn't have thought of, but it works.
Each of these songs is sped up, some more then others, from what you are used to. You might not be able to sing along the first time through, but by the second or third you will hit all the notes along with them since they do stick with the original melody. Occasionally, the also through in new words, as in "Gloria." And for those wondering, this isn't a new take on Michael W. Smith's classic reworking, but an arrangement that sticks much closer to the original carol.
There are a couple tracks that don't work as well. "Christmas Time is Here" isn't a fast song. Of course, it's also ruined by the fact that someone with a good voice is singing it. I will forever only love the version from the Charlie Brown special. "Silent Night" becomes a country church version that would have fit on lead singer Bart Millard's recent hymns project. I don't care for the arrangement, but those who enjoy upbeat country will.
My biggest disappointment is the lack of original songs. The final track, "Josephs' Lullaby" is the only new song. Appropriately enough, it is the slowest track here. This piano driven ballad is a tender take on what Joseph might have sang to Jesus that first Christmas night asking for a good night sleep before the reality of saving the world becomes His burden.
It will be a couple years before this CD is one I reach for at the start of the Christmas season. But it will be one that gets lots of play this year and in years to come. The Christmas Sessions OverviewOne of christian music's most loved and best selling bands delivers their first Christmas album. City on a Hill: It's Christmas Time ReviewCity on the Hill takes its trademark worship focus and applies it to Christmas. The result is a must buy.
The strength of this project is its new songs. Five of the six are absolute winners bringing a truly new spirit of worship to the holiday season. My favorites (and it's hard to choose) are "Child of Love," a lullaby for Mary that first Christmas night, and "Bethlehem Town" which juxtaposes the joy of Christ's birth with the pain and horror of his death. I always enjoy songs that remind us of why He ultimately came. Ironically enough, it's the title song that I don't especially like. It just seems so much less inspired then the others.
The other half of the songs on the CD are traditional Christmas carols that focus on what Christmas really means. I especially enjoyed Out of Eden's take on "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and the lesser recorded "In the Bleak Midwinter." And I don't know if I've yet heard a recording of "O Holy Night" that I didn't like.
My biggest problem with this CD is that, since most of the new songs are presented first, it doesn't seem that Christmassy to me right away. However, I love it so much, I think I'll be listening to it a lot at Christmas every year, so that won't last more then another year or two. This CD is destined to become a classic.City on a Hill: It's Christmas Time Overview

A Winter's Solstice II ReviewAfter all the years and all the Winter Solstice/Carols of Christmas?Windham Hill Christmas compilations, this is the one I always come back to. It has the most original material, and because of that, it is one of the few Winter Solstice albums you can honestly listen to in July or January or December. Brilliant improvisations by Philip Aaberg begin, and end this disc. One of Ackerman's awesome harp-guitar pieces, a piece by Barbara Higbee which is one of the only I've heard of her flute performances. And the most poignant moments of all - Fred Simon's Simple Psalm. Very moving piano work, complete with chime effects. Simply awesome. There is literally not a single boring or predictable track on this CD; it is a true masterpiece of astonishingly consistent talent all throughout. Yes the first "Winter Solstice" was very good, but this was actually far beyond perfect. THIS is the CD to start with!A Winter's Solstice II OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: WINTER'S SOLSTICETitle: VOL. 2-WINTER'S SOLSTICEStreet Release Date: 09/01/1989

Merry Axemas, Vol. 2: More Guitars For Christmas ReviewSteve Vai is a lot of things, but "compilation producer" may not leap to mind. But that's just what Steve is in his spare time, and here comes volume two of his excellent Merry Axemas instrumental "guitars for Christmas" series. The first volume featured the expected shred kings (Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson...) and the second volume brings in an array of other classic six-stringers (and one four- five- and six-stringer in session bassist Stu Hamm). Along with Stu we've got Steve Lukather, Neal Schon of Journey, Steve Stevens who you might remember from Billy Idol's 80s band, Trevor Rabin, erstwhile member of 80s Yes and the most prolific South African scoring movies today, Jersey cowboy Zakk Wylde from Ozzy Osbourne's band and Pride and Glory, metaller John Sykes from the Thin Lizzy/Tygers of Pan Tang/Whitesnake/Blue Murder, Robin Trower (second most famous utilizer of the Uni-Vibe), jam whiz Al Di Meola, and the master of fifth-chord mayhem -- and my namesake -- Ted Nugent. Every track works, even if some of them are relatively obscure Christmas songs since many of the obvious choices got used up on volume one. Standouts include Zakk Wylde setting aside his Les Pauls to play a beautiful arrangement of "White Christmas" on classical guitars; Rabin's highly-processed but lush and engaging guitar-synth take on "O Come All Ye Faithful"; and Nugent's wailing, wild, tongue-in-cheek explosion of "Deck the Halls". If you love Mannheim Steamroller you'll be made uneasy by most of these renditions...if you've always wondered how many harmonics can be fitted into a Christmas classic, or what Emmanuel would have done with a PRS and a Marshall half-stack, look no further. A guaranteed hit with any and every guitarist on your list.Merry Axemas, Vol. 2: More Guitars For Christmas Overview

Hail Queen of Heaven ReviewA CD by the Cambridge Singers and directed by John Rutter is always an auditory treat, but this one is earth-transfiguring in its beauty. It is divided into four parts based on the liturgical year:
1. Advent to Candlemas
2. Candlemas to Holy Week
3. Easter to the Sunday after Pentecost
4. Trinity to Advent
Each part contains five songs, mostly in Latin. Only a couple songs on the CD are in English, and they are beautiful (particularly: There is no rose of such virtue, a carol from the 15th century). I had to knock off one star for the Magnificat by Giles Swayne -- the obvious African influence of the music, while totally appropriate on another CD, was strangely jarring and inconsistent on this one. But it's easy enough to skip this track, and the CD is such a jewel that it's more than worth its price tag.Hail Queen of Heaven Overview

Christmas Offerings ReviewThird Day has released a great Christmas project. As with the first two "Offerings" CD's, this one mixes both live tracks and studio recordings. The live tracks feature very little talking, but the audience is obviously present. They hold up well to repeated listening.
Third Day has taken nine familiar Christmas carols and arranged them to fit their Southern Rock style. If this scares you, don't let it. Each song is still instantly recognizable, and I had no problem singing along on the first listen. While it sounds slightly different, it felt like Christmas to me. Of course, part of making it a Third Day song is lead singer Mac Powell's trademark deep voice.
"What Child is this?" is easily one of my favorite Christmas carols and their version is great. It starts with just acoustic guitar, but builds until the final chorus. By that point, the full band is playing and it has become a driving rock ballad. I also like the fact that they use a little known verse for their second verse.
They do a similar arrangement with "Do You Here What I Hear?" It flat out rocks by the final verse. I absolutely love it, as does the live audience.
While they speed up "O Holy Night" slightly (it works well as a rock ballad), they keep "Silent Night" slow. In fact, they have a nice violin intro on that song.
Since I have quite a Christmas music library, I always pay special attention to the new songs. Here, there are four of them. Three of them are great. "Born in Bethlehem" is a mid-tempo praise song to the Baby Jesus, while "Jesus, Light of the World" has a similar theme. "Christmas Like a Child" speaks of the longing to recapture the joy of Christmas. Not the longing for presents, but remembering that the season is ultimately about Jesus.
Which brings us to the final song. "Merry Christmas" is yet another in a long line of potentially depressing Christmas songs. Band member Brad Avery's real life wait to adopt a girl from China inspires it. While the final verse does have a happy resolution, I find the first two verses very sad. I will be skipping this track most of the time.
Still, this one track is not enough to ruin the CD overall. By putting their own sound on classic carols, Third Day has created a Christmas Offering I will look forward to listening to year after year.Christmas Offerings Overview

Christmas Guitar ReviewI love this album. It was the first music I heard by John Fahey and hooked me. Every year I play my christmas album (yes, it's vinyl) and people always ask me who is playing. Unfortunately, no one can ever find Fahey's music in the local music stores. Now they can get it all online.Christmas Guitar Overview

"Jose Feliciano applies his unique vocal and instrumental sylings to this recording of popular Christmas songs. Supported by a creative arrangement of strings, brass and percussion under the direction of Perry Botkin Jr., Feliciano adds interesting new dimensions to old Christmas favorites like, "Silent Night," "Little Drummer Boy," "Mary's Boy Child," and "The Cherry Tree Carol."
PS. Fans hope this nice gift from RCA can be the first of other for release originals LP of 60s and 70s of Jose in CD again.Feliz Navidad Overview

Christmas Extraordinaire ReviewHaving enjoyed their efforts over the years, this one is in my humble offering, the finest to date!
This is fusion music at its best--jazz, classical, folk, new age, all woven into tasteful and well thought out, produced and performed works.
The "Hallelujah" effort is breathtaking! Outset gave me reserve to tamper with such, but The Steamroller pulls it off with delight and reverence! Their renditions of "Away in A Manger" "Do You hear what I hear" and my favorite: "Faeries."
The addition of UofM Glee Club and Johnny Mathis are nice touch, which adds to the enjoyment and variety. This is just happy, relaxing, reverent updates of scores we all like to hear.
Provides nice variety to pop into the CD and place on "Scramble" mode, jumping from CD track to CD track, providing bit of every style.
Highly recommend!Christmas Extraordinaire Overview2001 holiday album from Chip Davis and his mates in Mannheim Steamroller.
