Hail Queen of Heaven ReviewA CD by the Cambridge Singers and directed by John Rutter is always an auditory treat, but this one is earth-transfiguring in its beauty. It is divided into four parts based on the liturgical year:
1. Advent to Candlemas
2. Candlemas to Holy Week
3. Easter to the Sunday after Pentecost
4. Trinity to Advent
Each part contains five songs, mostly in Latin. Only a couple songs on the CD are in English, and they are beautiful (particularly: There is no rose of such virtue, a carol from the 15th century). I had to knock off one star for the Magnificat by Giles Swayne -- the obvious African influence of the music, while totally appropriate on another CD, was strangely jarring and inconsistent on this one. But it's easy enough to skip this track, and the CD is such a jewel that it's more than worth its price tag.Hail Queen of Heaven Overview

December Stillness ReviewThis is a very well-conceived collection of mostly lesser-known choral gems for the holidays, combined with a few more famous selections. For years, Warland has championed the cause of otherwise obscure choral works, as well as choral composers whose works deserve a broader audience. The benefit to these composers, their works, and the discerning listener, is the consummate professionalism, musicianship, artistry, and craftsmanship with which Dale Warland, his singers, and even the recording engineers and technicians lend to their album projects.
As a former student of Dr. Alf S. Houkom, composer of "The Rune of Hospitality" (found on this recording), and a choral conductor myself, I rejoiced in the knowledge that this work, and others like it, are finally getting the exposure, as well as the professional treatment, that they so richly deserve. Bravo, Mr. Warland, and thank you for the gift of this album. This is truly in the spirit of the season.December Stillness OverviewWorld class choir here offers twelve carols and anthems evoking the beautiful starkness of winter. These are 20th century choral works by Penderecki, Rachmaninoff, Poulenc, Stravinsky and several other composers.

Romancero Gitano ReviewHaving sung one of the wonderfully crafted pieces on this CD ( La Rose Complete ) I would have to say this CD really can touch your heart and your soul. With my favorite being La Rose Complete, I can't say enough about it- the alto I and alto II part is something majestic, whereas the sopranoI and soprano II part can just blow you away, the tenors sound like distant angels and the bass part in this song is something else. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys classy choir music with a twist a love.Romancero Gitano Overview

Introducing World of American Jewish Music (Milken Archive of American Jewish Music) ReviewI can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.Introducing World of American Jewish Music (Milken Archive of American Jewish Music) OverviewThe Milken Archive of American Jewish Music is a vast recorded panorama of the rich body of Jewish music, both sacred and secular, that has developed over the course of American history. This recording features nineteen tracks representing the broad scope of the Archive recordings.

Gloria: The Sacred Music of John Rutter ReviewRutter's Gloria is a superb piece of 20th century music and this recording is crisp and caputes this composer at his best. I'm a singer and our group will perform this work in December. Many in our group have purchased the CD to help learn the music. It's ideal because we hear not only the music but also the spirit that I think Rutter intended.Gloria: The Sacred Music of John Rutter Overview

Foss: Time Cycle, Phorion, Song of Songs ReviewI heard Time Cycle as a teenager when it first came out and still treasure my 33 1/3 record, which I've told my son to guard with his life. I've waited YEARS for the piece to be re-released on cd and at last, it has been.
I believe that Foss deserves far more recognition than he's received, and this piece will show why. It should be noted that it was encored immediately after its premiere performance in '61, was it? It won the NY Music Critics Circle award too. It's haunting and I shall play it for everyone who sets foot in my home. I live in Spain and recently requested an airing of it on our national clasical music station's request show.
The Time Cycle is an unsung (forgive pun)masterpiece of Twentieth Century twelve-tone composition and superbly sung by the late Adele Addison.Foss: Time Cycle, Phorion, Song of Songs Overview

Kalinka: Popular Russian Songs ReviewMr. Storojev sings Russian songs with heart and soul. Every time I hear Evening Bells gives me chills as it is so beautiful. If you listen carefully at the end of the song about the drunk you can even hear him belch! If you want an album of Russian folk music I highly recommend this one. Mr. Storojev has a powerful voice and porjects into all of his pieces.Kalinka: Popular Russian Songs Overview
