Winterlude -- Instrumentals for a Contemplative Christmas ReviewI first heard "Winterlude" while getting physical therapy during the holidays of 1996. My husband and I were in an auto accident in November, and this music really helped to ease my pain during PT. I found the title of CD, and went and bought them all. "Winterlude" and "Guitar Winterlude" are my favs, but the others are just as great. If you find them for sale, buy them. They are very difficult to find. Happy Holidays to all, and be safe!!Winterlude -- Instrumentals for a Contemplative Christmas Overview

Cool Yule ReviewThis is one incredible Christmas CD from Bette Midler. Bette's first Christmas album is full of great renditions of the standards of this time of year including "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas;" "Ill Be Home For Christmas;" "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?;" "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and "White Christmas." Bette throws in a lot of her own pizzazz and wonderful eggnog with a new song "Cool Yule" and she does a wonderful duet with Johnny Mathis as they perform "Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" Terrific!
The CD opens strong with "Merry Christmas." This song boasts a great musical arrangement and Bette's voice is in excellent form--as it is throughout this album! Then the CD shifts gears and revs up the motors a little bit with "Cool Yule." This song, written by Steve Allen with additional lyrics by Eric Kornfeld, is a lot of fun and you'll be eager to listen to it again and again!
Another fun song on this CD is "Mele Kalikimaka." This is how to say "Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian; this adds a very personal touch to the CD because Bette was born in the state of Hawaii. It offers a great musical composition that starts off with a brief romantic flavor and then twists into a very catchy tune! Could this be a new classic in the making? I think this song will become increasingly popular with time as it is very well written and Bette does a great job with it. The numerous background vocalists are wonderful as well.
Bette Midler fans will recognize the special Christmas version of "From A Distance." It is touching as it was when it was first released and it remains just as relevant today as it was when it was first released in 1990. Newcomers will enjoy this special song as well.
I especially like how Bette masterfully handles the romantic, sentimental lyrics of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as well as "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" Bette breathes new life into these standards with her beautiful voice, energy and passion.
The quality of the sound is excellent even on a portable CD player. The liner notes are wonderful, too. There are nice photos of Bette both in the liner notes and on the back of the CD artwork, too. You get the song credits and there's a well written essay by Jay Landers. Nice!
Overall, I would recommend this CD for Bette Midler fans and anyone who appreciates beautifully arranged Christmas music. Bette's voice has never sounded better and I applaud her fine efforts to make her first Christmas CD a splendid reality. "Mele Kalikimaka" to you!SMILES
Cool Yule OverviewThis is Bette's first ever Holiday album! Bette delivers the ultimate present - Cool Yule!Experience the excellence of Bette's vocals with delightfully lush arrangements that will help you get into that Holiday spirit! If you are a fan of Bette's, this is a CD you MUST have! It is includes the new holiday version of "From A Distance" with orchestration by Robbie Buchanan and Noel-inspired lyrics. This album is sure to become a new holiday favorite!

First Christmas Morning ReviewThis is my new favorite in Christmas albums. Dan's musical abilities on all levels shine through; his lyrics, arranging and instrumentation. How nice to have some new original music that is so uplifiting that it is sure to become a classic for years to come. My favorite original cut is "Christ, the King" and he excels on the traditional hymn "In the Bleak Midwinter".
For fans expecting to hear Dan's wonderful voice sing the "traditional" same old songs, you will be disappointed. This thematic album is truly artistic. Dan's use of period style (Medievil, Rennaisance and Baroque) is carried delightfully throughout every cut and the listener is transported back to a different time. A beautiful listen for a quiet evening in front of the fire. His personal notes and history of each piece were educational and inspiring.
Thanks Dan for not doing the expected!First Christmas Morning Overview

David Grisman's Acoustic Christmas ReviewThis album is a true Grisman classic. Who else could put together such a distinct Christmas album? WHAT CHILD IS THIS is done in the old english style with mandolin accompanied by a band of minstrels playing recorders. SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN is done bluegrass style with virtuoso Bela Fleck on banjo. Respighi's ANCIENT AIRES AND DANCES is a beautiful rendering of this classical composition done with mandonlin, mandola, and mandocello. THE CHRISTMAS SONG is a soft, jazzy, acoustic version of Mel Torme's classic. GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN is done as an acoustic jazz tune in 6/8 time. WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS offers a touch of comic relief with Grisman's mandolin accompanying a Donald Duck impersonator. WHITE CHRISTMAS presents jazz guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor and John Stafford on tenor sax. THE FLOWER CAROL is another old english style number done with an accompanying hurdy-gurdy, crumhorns, and recorders. WINTER WONDERLAND is done in a swing style reminiscent of the Hot Club Quintet with Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. SILENT NIGHT is done in a bossa nova (?) style with accompnying vocal percussion and vocal trumpet. AULD LANG SYNE also presents Bela Fleck on banjo with a slower beginning tempo which kicks into bluegrass overdrive upon the key modulation.
With former DGQ members Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, and Rob Wasserman providing the rhythm section this album reflects what I believe to have been the glory days of the Grisman legacy. Displaying Grisman's unique musical diversity, ingenius arrangements, and mandolin virtuosity with this all-star lineup, ACOUSTIC CHRISTMAS is a Christmas album in a class of its own. It actually makes a musical statement apart from the context of it being a holiday album. This is a must buy for fans of Grisman, jazz, bluegrass, or Christmas music in general.David Grisman's Acoustic Christmas Overview

Beauty Queen Sister ReviewIt's been a long time since I heard the Indigo Girls like this. I remember the first time I experienced "Blood and FIre" and "Strange Fire", and fell in love with IG, and experienced the folk genre. I've stuck with them through thick and thin since then, even with the broken promises of "Shaming of the Sun" and "Come on Now Social", both of which had good moments but have never been my favorites. I've loved them in "All that We Let In" (magnificent, underrated) and "Become You". It all comes down to those voices--Amy Ray and Emily have a pipeline to my heart, they unleash my love and longing when I hear them. I give myself completely to their care in this album, and I am so happy to be enveloped in the beautiful songwriting and deep harmonic wonder of their combined talents. Stylistically, this is another leap forwards for them, a sampling and an homage to all the disparate parts that make up their brand of modern folk, but under their sure guidance, it sounds unified and wonderful. The guitar picking is classic IG, the melodic lines are fresh but so familiar--like a song you have never heard before but which sounds so familiar, like a bit of home. Production is fairly typical for the IG--it would not be accused of being stripped down, but it is warm and well thought out. Amy Ray has left behind some of her angry roughness but kept some of deep raspy-ness that makes her so unique. Emily is as sweet and shy as ever, touching more of the painful emotions that make me love them so much, but as always it is the intersection of their voices, when the two of them sing together, blending beautifully, achingly that makes me love them. Ultimately, few groups have inhabited so much time in my cassette player, my cd player, my ipod, and my heart as these two, and I can only hope that they will continue producing music as honest and beautiful as this.Beauty Queen Sister Overview

A Winter's Solstice II ReviewAfter all the years and all the Winter Solstice/Carols of Christmas?Windham Hill Christmas compilations, this is the one I always come back to. It has the most original material, and because of that, it is one of the few Winter Solstice albums you can honestly listen to in July or January or December. Brilliant improvisations by Philip Aaberg begin, and end this disc. One of Ackerman's awesome harp-guitar pieces, a piece by Barbara Higbee which is one of the only I've heard of her flute performances. And the most poignant moments of all - Fred Simon's Simple Psalm. Very moving piano work, complete with chime effects. Simply awesome. There is literally not a single boring or predictable track on this CD; it is a true masterpiece of astonishingly consistent talent all throughout. Yes the first "Winter Solstice" was very good, but this was actually far beyond perfect. THIS is the CD to start with!A Winter's Solstice II OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: WINTER'S SOLSTICETitle: VOL. 2-WINTER'S SOLSTICEStreet Release Date: 09/01/1989

Merry Axemas, Vol. 2: More Guitars For Christmas ReviewSteve Vai is a lot of things, but "compilation producer" may not leap to mind. But that's just what Steve is in his spare time, and here comes volume two of his excellent Merry Axemas instrumental "guitars for Christmas" series. The first volume featured the expected shred kings (Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson...) and the second volume brings in an array of other classic six-stringers (and one four- five- and six-stringer in session bassist Stu Hamm). Along with Stu we've got Steve Lukather, Neal Schon of Journey, Steve Stevens who you might remember from Billy Idol's 80s band, Trevor Rabin, erstwhile member of 80s Yes and the most prolific South African scoring movies today, Jersey cowboy Zakk Wylde from Ozzy Osbourne's band and Pride and Glory, metaller John Sykes from the Thin Lizzy/Tygers of Pan Tang/Whitesnake/Blue Murder, Robin Trower (second most famous utilizer of the Uni-Vibe), jam whiz Al Di Meola, and the master of fifth-chord mayhem -- and my namesake -- Ted Nugent. Every track works, even if some of them are relatively obscure Christmas songs since many of the obvious choices got used up on volume one. Standouts include Zakk Wylde setting aside his Les Pauls to play a beautiful arrangement of "White Christmas" on classical guitars; Rabin's highly-processed but lush and engaging guitar-synth take on "O Come All Ye Faithful"; and Nugent's wailing, wild, tongue-in-cheek explosion of "Deck the Halls". If you love Mannheim Steamroller you'll be made uneasy by most of these renditions...if you've always wondered how many harmonics can be fitted into a Christmas classic, or what Emmanuel would have done with a PRS and a Marshall half-stack, look no further. A guaranteed hit with any and every guitarist on your list.Merry Axemas, Vol. 2: More Guitars For Christmas Overview

Christmas Extraordinaire ReviewHaving enjoyed their efforts over the years, this one is in my humble offering, the finest to date!
This is fusion music at its best--jazz, classical, folk, new age, all woven into tasteful and well thought out, produced and performed works.
The "Hallelujah" effort is breathtaking! Outset gave me reserve to tamper with such, but The Steamroller pulls it off with delight and reverence! Their renditions of "Away in A Manger" "Do You hear what I hear" and my favorite: "Faeries."
The addition of UofM Glee Club and Johnny Mathis are nice touch, which adds to the enjoyment and variety. This is just happy, relaxing, reverent updates of scores we all like to hear.
Provides nice variety to pop into the CD and place on "Scramble" mode, jumping from CD track to CD track, providing bit of every style.
Highly recommend!Christmas Extraordinaire Overview2001 holiday album from Chip Davis and his mates in Mannheim Steamroller.

Rockabilly Xmas ReviewDon't be fooled by the Rockabilly in the title because even fans of rock 'n roll might think it's just early country rock but this collection is so much more. Obscure. Sure, but there are no bad tracks on this collection - they're all cool, fun and definitely rock 'n roll. There are a couple where the sound quality can generously be described as recorded next door but if you're a fan of obscure rock 'n roll or you're making your Christmas CD and want to sprinkle in a few tracks no one else has ... this is great. In this collection, you get some rockabilly but mainly just a lot of great early rock from rhythm & bluesy rock to precursor garage rock to early surf guitar to as mentioned by the other reviewer - novelty songs but these are no "chipmunks-songs," they are all rock 'n roll. If you like your rock n' roll a little garage, a little rough around the edges but all done with passion and a great driving beat - you will want this CD!Rockabilly Xmas Overview

Merry Axemas ReviewWell, I guess the title and cover art are sufficient warning, but this is a truly wild, over the edge guitar treatment of Christmas music, and I wouldn't bring this CD with you for Christmas dinner with Aunt Minnie or Uncle Joe.
But if you are into this style of guitar, you'll love this. It may well be the one and only Christmas album you have, and the sheer dissonant, loud energy of most of the CD might well upset traditionalists. But this is Christmas as expressed from the perception of the guitarists, and therefore is more than legitimate. Standouts? "Joy To The World" was my personal favorite. Poor Rudolph practically gets slaughtered in the first cut, but I don't say that in a mean spirit. This entire CD is for those who relish the sheer sound, fury, and energy, and yes, the innovation of this style of guitar.
But don't expect Windham Hill. LOLMerry Axemas OverviewGuitar/metal Compilation Produced by Steve Vai. Japanese Release to Coantain an Exclusive Bonus Track.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Christmas We Hoped For ReviewI am a long-time collector of Christmas CDs, and this album is my new favorite. Vanessa's voice is beautiful, and each song in the collection seems to highlight a different facet of her range and abilities. The CD's a wonderful blend of old standards and new holiday tunes, and everything's had an updated spin put on it. I can't recommend it highly enough. The Christmas We Hoped For Overview"The Christmas We Hoped For" is an instant holiday classic - an eclectic collection of traditional hymns, contemporary favorites like "White Christmas," and modern Christmas songs like The Weepies' "All That I Want." The album began as a side project intended to get Vanessa back into the studio after a nearly 3-year hiatus, and it turned into an all-consuming affair that had Vanessa in the studio throughout the hottest Texas summer in 30 years. As Peters told the story, 'There's nothing quite like singing White Christmas while the temperature outside is 110 degrees.' Produced by Rip Rowan and featuring Grammy-winning guitarist / producer Joe Reyes, the album offers a fresh take on Christmas classics that remains true to the spirit of the original songs.

Daddy Plays: Lullaby Christmas ReviewI loved the first lullaby cd so much I purchased a copy not only for myself, but everyone I knew who had young children or was about to become a new mom, so naturally I was so excited to learn that a Christmas album was available which includes all my favorite songs like "Greensleeves" and "Let it Snow" Once again, Daddy Plays provides soothing familiar melodies in a way that appeals to adults as well. As one who has worked in childcare for years, I have often grown frustrated listening to the typical lullabies with their "cookie-cutter" kiddie sound that makes me count down the seconds left of napt-time just so I can turn the stereo off! The Daddy Plays series is a refreshing breath of fresh air! FINALLY there are lullabies i can't wait to listen to myself! You don't have to be a kid to love these cd's I'd recommend them to anyone, with or without kids!Daddy Plays: Lullaby Christmas Overview

Jingle All the Way ReviewThe Flecktones have always been known for incredible instrumental abilities and challenging arrangements. By recording a holiday collection, they have made their music more accessible without sacrificing technique. This is also an incredibly diverse collection: I find that there are songs I can't stop listening to, some I enjoy greatly, and some that are fine (as well as one that is terrible--I can tolerate Tuvan throat singing as a texture, not as the primary instrument as it is on the Jingle Bells reprise).
"Jingle Bells" has quite a bit of throat singing, but the chromatic bass line is what really makes this different and interesting. Similarly, "Silent Night" has enough alternate chords and a driving rhythm to make a well-known carol new and unusual. "Sleigh Ride" is the first song that I find incredible--Bela starts it with a common opening banjo-lick (think "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"), that tears into a series of single-line runs that are astonishing in their fluidity. Jeff matches this on the sax later in the song, all of which is propelled by Vic and Futureman's astonishing groove. Vic's solo includes a quote from "The Wizard of Oz," and during the instrumental breakdown he begins a "Rudolph" quote that the rest of the band picks up on. Astonishing musicianship; any question that these guys love playing together?
The next song is a stunningly gorgeous solo bass rendition of "The Christmas Song." Vic shows the full potential of the bass as a solo instrument with high chords over a resonating low tone that is full and beautiful. "12 Days" is another favorite, with the band tackling a different meter and key with each day. How they stay together through 12 key and tempo changes at the end is astonishing to hear (props to special guests Andy Statman and Edgar Meyer, here and on other songs). The fact that this is bookended with a Bach oratorio demonstrates the range of these musicians: classical banjo (think "Perpetual Motion") with a sax counterpoint, quarter-notes on the bass driving it along; yes, it's a classical piece, but a fully modern arrangement.
The Peanuts songs are next; from the other reviews, these are clearly favorites, though I found little unusual about the arrangements, perhaps because they were jazz pieces to begin with. The Jingle Bells reprise, as I mentioned, is the one song I never listen to. The Hanukkah Waltz is good, Sugar Plum fairies has some astonishing banjo runs which are then duplicated on bass. "What Child is This" is my absolute favorite: more Tuvan throat singing, but it perfectly fits the mood and feel of Dyngyldai: this song has the heaviest groove I've heard in a long time, and when it takes off the power is overwhelming.
"O Come" is a nice, slow mandolin/string bass duet that is unremarkable. The medley is interesting, then the band has a blast with "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Vic and Futureman start the groove, everyone else joins in, you hear the count-off, then there is a fantastic definition of the melody, with all the instruments trading off single notes. I first heard this idea on the "Strength in Numbers" CD, and am still always amazed when it happens. This is the band having their last blast.
"River" is solo Bela, playing piano and banjo simultaneously. The fact that it is simultaneous is an unnecessary gimmick: the arrangement is beautiful and perfect.
My point in this review: the musicianship is incredible and the songs are varied. Chances are you'll find something you love, even if you don't love the entire collection.Jingle All the Way Overview

Christmas Eve and Other Stories ReviewFrom the enchanting cover art right through to the last notes of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," the last track, Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a rare delight.
In fact, although this is supposed to be a Christmas album, I find I can listen to it year 'round (as I am right now and it's August 31st).
You probably already know this from reading other reviews, but Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is the alter ego of Savatage, a mostly heavy metal/progressive rock band whose albums tend to lean toward the "concept" side of creativity, which is to say they're generally quite a few notches above most music these days...and often contain flashes of brilliance not found anywhere else on the planet.
There's a feeling I get every year around Christmastime, and TSO "director" Paul O'Neill (who produces Savatage's albums) captured it exactly on this CD. As a matter of fact, on TSO's web site, O'Neill writes, "I love writing stories and I've always been staggeringly fascinated with Christmas. It's such a magical time of the year. If you're walking down a New York City street around Christmastime and it starts to snow, the potential for magic can be felt in the air. That's what I tried to capture on this record, while bringing a fresh musical treatment to the holiday."
To capture that "magical" feeling on Christmas Eve and Other Stories, O'Neill took mostly traditional Christmas songs and infused them with electric guitar power and energy to create a majestic, emotional, captivating sound that tends to overwhelm me with emotion or awe (such as on the incredible "A Star To Follow" track or in the dynamic "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" track, which also appeared on Savatage's Dead Winter Dead CD).
"A Star To Follow" is amazing. Savatage occasionally creates counterpoint/chorus arrangements that truly rise above the norm, such as the title track to The Wake of Magellan, for example. Or "Morphine Child" from their latest CD Poets and Madmen. "A Star To Follow" gives me the chills every time I hear it.
This CD isn't just Christmas tunes put to heavy metal. It's so much more than that. There's a softness and innocence, maybe even a reverence, about these arrangements (like on the delicate classical guitar instrumental "The Silent Nutcracker") -- even when such songs are placed back-to-back against tracks like "A Mad Russian's Christmas," which begins with a plaintive piano melody that's soon punctuated by bone-crushing Metallica-esque power chords.
Another example of one style of music placed like bookends against another is "Prince of Peace" immediately followed by Savatage's "Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24," one of the most powerful songs you'll ever hear -- Christmas or otherwise.
I can't say enough about this CD. It's the kind of album that comes along truly once in a lifetime. Even if TSO never tops this performance (The Christmas Attic and Beethoven's Last Night are noble efforts, but they don't hold a candle to this album), they will have served us well by creating Christmas Eve and Other Stories -- one of my favorite CDs of all time.Christmas Eve and Other Stories OverviewThis is a concept album all the way, with tales of Christmas kindness intertwined with masterful musicianship as they play traditionals plus their own An Angel Came Down; First Snow; Ornament; Old City Bar , and more!
