This Is the Winter Darkness ReviewAlbum Description
A cunning blend of noise and melody, the insane picnic rode on the crest of the new wave providing a musical backdrop to the discontent of Thatcher's Britain in the early to mid 80's (3 million unemployed, Northern Ireland, the miners strike, Falklands war etc.,). Melody Maker described them as A twisted cross between Echo and the bunnymen and The Fall, the insane picnic succeed where most others fail by creating an atmosphere that may not be unique but is at least threateningly distanced from the obvious possibilities.
About the Artist
In the early 1980s, English band the insane picnic (always printed in lower case) were one of the pioneering D.I.Y. cassette culture bands, comprised of members Peter Ashby (ex-Spasmodic Caress and Frenzid Melon) , Barry Lamb (ex-Frenzid Melon and cult figure on the experimental avant garde music circuit) and Owen Turley (ex-Hiroshima, Rectonob and Proof of Rondog). They recorded several releases for the English independent record label Falling A Records. As well as regularly appearing in many fanzines they were also often featured in the mainstream music papers with favourable reviews in Melody Maker, Sounds and NME, also featuring on several occasions in the Sounds Obscurist chart and Psychedelic chart and were favourites of pirate radio stations Liverpool City radio and Andromeda. The band eventually split in the late 80's. Ashby and Lamb went on to develop their solo careers and work together in the progressive rock band Ermin Grud whilst Turley developed his! unique brand of electronica under the guise of General Kustard.
