A Quiet Thing; David Daniels & Craig Ogden ReviewI know, I know--you can't stand the countertenor voice, it's "weird," "creepy," "unnerving." I can't promise to change anyone's mind; this voice is an acquired taste. But oh, the glories if you acquire it!
Daniels's tone, shadings, and breath control are pure beauty. The Renaissance songs, such as Dowland's "Come Again Sweet Love," we expect to be great, because Dowland wrote with this voice in mind. But even in the contemporary songs such as "A Quiet Thing," Daniels is a revelation. And in what has become his signature song, "Blackberry Winter," he is heartbreaking; the colors of his voice, the emotion, especially in the repeat of the line, "And I get so lonely," make one cry.
Listen to this CD to understand why the countertenor voice has been so revered and exalted for hundreds of years. Not since the days of Russell Oberlin have I encountered such a moving, almost unbearably beautiful recording.A Quiet Thing; David Daniels & Craig Ogden OverviewSolid Disk guaranteed with no scratches

A Quiet Thing: Songs for Voice and Guitar (American Artistry) ReviewA PLEASURABLE POTPOURRI???
This group of songs is a mixed bag of tunes featuring such predictable fare as the Renaissance songs of Dowland and Purcell (Come again, sweet love, Flow my Tears, Music for a While), three attractive Bellini arias, settings of Ave Maria by both Bach and Schubert, to name just a few. But this disc also includes more unusual material that seems a bit incongruous when mixed with the traditional selections. Among these would be: So Pretty & A shining son(Bernstein), a really good arrangment of Harold Arlen's jazz standard 'My Shining Hour', and a beautifully arranged folk song 'Shenandoah'.
There is no question in my mind that David Daniels can handle any genre of music he wants to sing and present a masterly performance of such. His voice is strong with a refined elegance and always clear precise diction (Listen if you will to his rendition of Handel's aria from Partenope 'Furibondo, Spira il Vento'from his album 'Sento Amor'; he sings this at breakneck speed and never a word is lost). His voice is most superb when he moves from the chest to the countertenor range; that's when he really shines!
On this recording he is accompanied solely by the very excellent guitarist Craig Ogden, who has a great sensitivity to Daniel's performance, and is also responsible for some of the arrangements herein.
My own personal objection to the entire reocrding lies with the wideness and somewhat incompatible repertoire presented. It is annoying to have to adjust my ears from hearing gorgeous renditions of the lovely Bellini arias, the substantial sound of Bach and the delightfu Renaissance love songs, to the music of Harold Arlen, Leonard Bernstein, some of which I might enjoy in another setting. However, you, the listener, will make your own judgement. The performance of these two solid musicians is beyond reproach. (Know that this is a re-release of a 2002 recording still available on the Amazon Marketplace at a cheaper price.)A Quiet Thing: Songs for Voice and Guitar (American Artistry) Overview
