33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals ReviewI have been playing acoustic guitar (mostly bluegrass now) for about 10 years. This is important to consider with regards to my rating. From my perspective, this album is an exquisite gem. Clarence White's guitar work "speaks" to me, I can't say more than that. It just sounds right. This CD is packed with guitar wizardry, but the kind that doesn't sound flashy at the expense of feeling. I just keep learning from it. You can hear Clarence's quick crosspicking, his unique syncopation, and the general "fullness" of his playing. It is interesting to hear these recordings juxtaposed with his playing in the Kentucky Colonels. I love the music of the Kentucky Colonels, but I can't help listening past the other great musicians in their recorded performances to hear what Clarence is doing with his rhythm. In this CD, I am absolved of that guilt.
Now for a wider perspective. This CD was not recorded with intent to release publicly. The songs are generally short and unpolished. For many like me this is part of the appeal, its like sitting in Clarence's living room while he runs through his repertoire. For others, this may reduce the overall enjoyment. This is the type of CD I sit down and "listen" to. I do not put it on in the background with company over. It is a little too discontinuous (due to the many short songs) and intense for that. This is neither a strength or weakness, just a property of the album. It just depends on what you are looking to have in your CD collection.
Bottom Line: If you are a Clarence White fan, or a fan of flatpicking guitar, you will greatly appreciate this album. An easy 5 stars from me.33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals Overview

One Guitar, No Vocals ReviewLeo Kottke is a national treasure. He is our greatest living solo acoustic guitar virtuoso. Having said that, you'd expect his CDs to be at a very high level of brilliance. I have at least a dozen of his titles. If there is any trouble in deciding the merits of any one disc, it's because there are so many Kottke releases to choose from.
"One Guitar, No Vocals" clearly ranks as one of the best. The compositions tickle my brain, warm my heart, and put a bounce into my step. The guitar playing is dazzling. You really get a glimpse of the man behind the guitar by listening to this music - brilliant, thoughtful, odd, complex, quirky, a huge heart, and the wackiest sense of humor. It's spirited music, so thoroughly drenched in the personality of its creator that it's unmistakably and immediately recognizable as Leo.
The world is full of acoustic guitar instrumentalists these days. Some of them are quite excellent. Many are not. But there is only one Leo Kottke. And his guitar music is a gift to the world.
A very strong recommendation for this CD.One Guitar, No Vocals Overview

6 & 12 String Guitar ReviewNo one--and I mean no one--has produced a more stunning debut in any genre than Leo Kottke did with 6- and 12-String Guitar. And even more amazing, consider Kottke's comments from the liner notes in Anthology: "We didn't know about sequencing, so the record [6- and 12-String Guitar] is in the order it was recorded...The record took three-and-a-half hours to do, and all I had to do was sit down and play everything I ever knew." This is 36 minutes and 38 seconds of genius. I'm willing to bet that Kottke ended many a would-be guitarist's career. [How could you listen to this album and expect to compete at the same level?]
Kottke can play achingly beautiful melodies like on the original "Crow River Waltz" or Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and then turn around and dazzle you with with the speed and brilliance on tunes like "Busted Bicycle" and "Vaseline Machine Gun," (a tune he revisited on 1997's Standing in My Shoes).
While Kottke does possess a wonderful baritone voice and has worked with additional musicians, on this outing Kottke lets his guitar do all the talking--and it speaks with an authoritative voice.
This album was originally released on John Fahey's tiny Takoma label. While Kottke and Fahey are frequently mentioned in the same breath, Kottke's guitar style has always been easier on the ear. Over the last 30 years, Kottke has been responsible for some of the most innovative and beautiful solo guitar music. Here's where it all began.
