Sittin Here Pickin the Blues ReviewThis album is essentially a deluxe reissue of Doc and Merle's Pickin' the Blues (1985). Rounding out the tracks from that album are four choice cuts from Red Rockin' Chair (1981) and three fine instrumentals from Doc and Merle's Guitar Album (1983). Also included is a nice, but non-definitive, live rendition of "Deep River Blues" from The Festival Tapes / Tellulive (1979). This is a great sampling of the material Doc and Merle recorded for Flying Fish Records before Merle's untimely death on October 23, 1985. For those new to Doc's music, I would suggest exploring Doc's Vanguard recordings (On Stage, Southbound, Home Again, Ballads From Deep Gap) before you venture into this material. For those already familiar with Doc's early work and are looking for a good sampler of Doc and Merle's stint with Flying Fish, this is the best you're going to do.Sittin Here Pickin the Blues Overview

33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals ReviewI have been playing acoustic guitar (mostly bluegrass now) for about 10 years. This is important to consider with regards to my rating. From my perspective, this album is an exquisite gem. Clarence White's guitar work "speaks" to me, I can't say more than that. It just sounds right. This CD is packed with guitar wizardry, but the kind that doesn't sound flashy at the expense of feeling. I just keep learning from it. You can hear Clarence's quick crosspicking, his unique syncopation, and the general "fullness" of his playing. It is interesting to hear these recordings juxtaposed with his playing in the Kentucky Colonels. I love the music of the Kentucky Colonels, but I can't help listening past the other great musicians in their recorded performances to hear what Clarence is doing with his rhythm. In this CD, I am absolved of that guilt.
Now for a wider perspective. This CD was not recorded with intent to release publicly. The songs are generally short and unpolished. For many like me this is part of the appeal, its like sitting in Clarence's living room while he runs through his repertoire. For others, this may reduce the overall enjoyment. This is the type of CD I sit down and "listen" to. I do not put it on in the background with company over. It is a little too discontinuous (due to the many short songs) and intense for that. This is neither a strength or weakness, just a property of the album. It just depends on what you are looking to have in your CD collection.
Bottom Line: If you are a Clarence White fan, or a fan of flatpicking guitar, you will greatly appreciate this album. An easy 5 stars from me.33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals Overview

The Tony Rice Guitar Method ReviewThis is an excellent DVD, but there are a few minor negatives. Compared to his earlier VHS "lesson," (An Intimate Lesson w/TR) this one was more difficult for me to follow because Tony isn't talking to you, the viewer. He's talking to Happy Traum. This makes it a little more difficult to match with the tablature because Tony will do a variation after Happy asks a question. The older VHS is straight forward - we're going to learn this one now. This new DVD really is like sitting in on two musicians playing around but not noticing you're there. The pieces are more difficult than the older video as well - I find myself very intimidated by how fast and clean he plays these more complex tunes - but that may be because I haven't learned them yet!!! Other than those nitpicks, it's always great to get a closeup view of just what in the world Tony's doing, hear stories, listen to that amazing old Martin and his very impressive newer Santa Cruz. And the ability to slow forward and easily rewind the DVD is magnificent. The selection of tunes is very good, the audio quality is excellent and the camera work is very good. Now if I could just get Tony to come to my house and teach me this stuff . . .The Tony Rice Guitar Method OverviewYou'll gain insights into important elements, such as Tony's method for getting his guitar in tune, how he warms up for a show, the correct way to put on a capo, proper left hand fretting technique, advice about speed and dexterity, the secrets of Tony's guitar micing and how he plays some of his signature licks. Tony plays and breaks down some relatively easy songs, including "The Last Thing on My Mind," "Bury Me Beneath the Willow" and "Wildwood Flower," showing how these country-folk standards can evolve from basic Carter Family style to an arrangement utilizing Tony's unique embellishments. You'll see, up close, the details of his right hand technique – his fluidity of motion and how he holds the pick, adjusting its angle to give him his trademark cross-picking sound. Clarence White was Tony's first major influence, and he relates how his own sound was derived from the rhythm patterns and licks of his early idol. He slows down astonishing solos they each played on "Nine Pound Hammer,"and describes the scales he uses for his improvisations both in basic G position and up the neck. Tony also discusses Doc Watson's powerful role in his musical development, launching into an exploration of fiddle tunes "Stony Lonesome" and "Billy in the Lowground." Tony Rice's uniquely beautiful ballad arrangements of "Shenandoah" and "Danny Boy" (both in dropped D tuning) combine chord-melody style, improvised scales, the use of harmonics and other lyrical techniques that will give you endless pleasure in guitar exploration. Wyatt Rice then joins his brother in a demonstration of how to play minor key tunes "Little Sadie" and "Jerusalem Ridge." Finally, Tony uses "Salt Creek" to demonstrate his highly regarded back up technique, with Wyatt playing lead. The brothers then go out with a version of the classic "I Am a Pilgrim" to finish the set.

The Bluegrass Guitar Collection ReviewTony Rice is the greatest acoustic guitarist I've ever heard. His right hand knows what the left hand is doing. The tone and balance in his style haven't been equaled although every flatpicker after him owes him a debt of gratitude. The tunes are fiddle toons for the most part with a fantastic supporting cast which has been the norm for Tony throughout his recording history. This is a great collection spaning much of his career.
The collection showcases the fine instrument the man plays as well. I first heard and saw this guitar in person about 25 years ago and it sounds even better today. It's as legendary as the current owner. The instrument was obscure for it's first 25 years. Then it was purchased in 1960 for Clarence White by his father for a mere $35. Tony Rice purchased it in 1975. The 1935 Martin D28 is the finest guitar of it's kind in the world. And it's no accident that Tony Rice owns and plays it.
