Sittin Here Pickin the Blues ReviewThis album is essentially a deluxe reissue of Doc and Merle's Pickin' the Blues (1985). Rounding out the tracks from that album are four choice cuts from Red Rockin' Chair (1981) and three fine instrumentals from Doc and Merle's Guitar Album (1983). Also included is a nice, but non-definitive, live rendition of "Deep River Blues" from The Festival Tapes / Tellulive (1979). This is a great sampling of the material Doc and Merle recorded for Flying Fish Records before Merle's untimely death on October 23, 1985. For those new to Doc's music, I would suggest exploring Doc's Vanguard recordings (On Stage, Southbound, Home Again, Ballads From Deep Gap) before you venture into this material. For those already familiar with Doc's early work and are looking for a good sampler of Doc and Merle's stint with Flying Fish, this is the best you're going to do.Sittin Here Pickin the Blues Overview

The Three Pickers ReviewEarl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs team up on what has to be as good as bluegrass music gets. You will play this one again and again. This hauntingly beautiful CD reminded me once again that most of the so-called music coming out of Nashville today masquerading as "country" and/or "bluegrass" is pure (junk). No tight jeans and cowboy hats here. Just first class music.
The pickers play a lot of older songs: "What Would You Give In Exchange For Your Soul," "Who Will Sing For Me," "Soldier's Joy," "The Storms Are On The Ocean," "Foggy Mountain Top," "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms." These men are as good as pickers get. Having Alison Krauss join them on some of the cuts only makes this CD better.
Difficult as it is to pick a favorite, I would probably vote for "Down In The Valley To Pray." Doc Watson begins this hymn, as simple and pure as your grandmother's pound cake, and is then joined by the voices of Skaggs and Scruggs, along with Krauss, in an a capella arrangement that will send chills down your spine. You are immediately carried back to a one-room church 50 or 60 years ago. The songleader began a hymn and then one by one, the congregation joined in while mothers fanned their babies with funeral home fans. Even though it never was, we thought life was much simpler then. The Three Pickers OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: BluegrassMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 15-JUL-2003

Merle Travis Guitar / Walkin the Strings Plus ReviewAt last these two seminal Merle Travis albums are available in their gloriuos integrity.
If you are a guitar aficionado this is it: almost the holy grail of american fingerpicking style
The Merle Travis Guitar is an only instrumental electric gutar set, with definitive versions of Saturday night shuffle, My Bluebell and many more. It was originally issued in 1956. A previous release of this album shuffled tracks from both LPs, but this is the right one.
Walking the strings is the acoustic set and it includes vocals on three tracks and Travis's typical spoken introductions , which are welcomed.
This was a compilation of recordings from the early fifties late forties.
It repeats (better say reinterpret) some of the electric set tracks. This
way you get twice amazed.
Loads and loads of Travis Picking to enjoy.Chet Atkins would develope and somehow smooth the style, but I like Travis more.
Sound quality is very good. It includes the original liner notes and some extra comments.
If this was not enough it adds some extra tracks, so we have 39 tracks on a single CD.
This is a must for guitar players.
For the rest is also very enjoyable but could be a little too much, and perhaps you could do with one of the compilations including the major vocal hits also.
Thanks Raven!!Merle Travis Guitar / Walkin the Strings Plus Overview
