The Postman (Il Postino): Music From The Miramax Motion Picture Soundtrack (1994 Film) ReviewRomantic, charming, yet simple and poignant is the main theme from the Postman. As if that weren't beautiful enough, it is also recorded in various arrangements (harpsichord and string, for one, anda guitar and bandoneon versio). All are delightful!
What was also a pleasant surprise was the poetry recitals on the CD (these were not actually in the movie). I found myself repeatedly listening to Morning by Sting and to Poetry by Miranda Richardson. Much of the music is accompanied by the beautiful themes of the movie, too. Perhaps the greatest consequence of the CD was that it led me to Neruda's Poetry (love sonnets, odes). The poetry on the disc is just the surface. Did you know Neruda won the Nobel Prize for his beautiful poetry in 1971?

Berlioz: Huit Scènes de Faust ReviewThis is a recording meant to rejoice in the French spirit. Charles Dutoit leads Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Montreal Symphony Chorus, and soloists through a spectrum of works by Hector Berlioz that range from the sublime to the mundane. The juicy programming ends in a 'make the audience stand' version of Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle's 'La Marseillaise' for full chorus and orchestra!
Along the way there are 'Huit Scénes de Faust, for solo voices, chorus, orchestra & guitar' which benefit from the luxurious singing of Susan Graham, Suzanne Mentzer and some other fine vocalists. Dutoit coaxes a thoroughly French sound (!) from his forces and the result is ravishingly beautiful. Also included on this disc are lesser known works such as 'L' impériale, cantata for double chorus & orchestra', a mildly out of context excerpt from 'Les Nuits d'été' (Sur les lagunes) sung by a male (François Roux) which gives a different slant to the cycle, 'Le Chasseur danois, for baritone & piano (or orchestra)', and a lovely rendition of the ever-popular 'Plaisir d'amour' by Johann Paul Aegidius Martini effectively sung by François Roux.
It is a mixed bag but the good moments far overshadow the lesser ones. If for nothing else the collectors of Susan Graham's recordings will most assuredly want to add this CD to their collection! Grady Harp, September 05Berlioz: Huit Scènes de Faust Overview

When we began planning our wedding, we wanted to put a subtle Disney spin to it, since it means so much to our relationship (we even went to WDW for our honeymoon!) This CD inspired a number of songs - I walked down the aisle to So This Is Love, but played live by a classical guitarist, and we had the DJ play this entire disc during the dinner part of our reception. A Day to Remember - Instrumental Music for Your Wedding Day ReviewThe piano-duo The O'Neill Brothers have compiled a collection of instrumental music for weddings comprised of original, classical, and pop music that they have used in the 200+ weddings they have played for over the past several years. I haven't been to a wedding in quite a long time and have no idea of what people are doing musically these days, but the variety of the selections on this CD seems to cover most bases. A lot of the music is ensemble playing rather than just piano, adding to the variety of sounds. I'm not sure how many people who are not planning weddings would buy a CD like this, so let's look at it from the perspective of someone who is. The CD is arranged in sections to correspond to the parts of a wedding - Prelude, Processional, Ceremony, Recessional, and Reception - and each section has 2-4 pieces to use or choose from. I really like the two original pieces, "Falling in Love" and "Reminiscent Joy," which are piano only. The Brothers also do a really nice job with Paul Stookey's "The Wedding Song," which is also piano only. The classical pieces are pretty standard wedding faire, and include - "Canon in D," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," "Ave Maria," and "Ode to Joy." Pop tunes include "From This Moment On" by Shania Twain, "Forever In Love" by Kenny G, and "The Way You Look Tonight."
