Ole: Bullfight Music From Spain ReviewThis is bullfight music. Some bullfight bands include large brass instruments (like the tuba or French horn) and few, if any, violins. This band has the large brass instruments and no violins. I mention this distinction so you can choose whichever suits you. I like both alternatives and bought both types. You can find both by searching on "Bullfight Music". When I searched, I found this CD of bands with large brass instruments. One of the other CDs featured a mariachi band with prominent violins.Ole: Bullfight Music From Spain Overview

Canta En Espanol ReviewThis beautiful album (yes,it's an actual record) has been in my family for over 30 years. It is still a timeless classic! I just recently played it on my turntable the other night in all the album's monaural glory; the recording was never originally released in stereo. This was the era where music, regardless if it was recorded in Spanish or English, still obtained those same universal characteristics; Actual live and talented musicians with real instruments and gifted vocalists were the norm. Before the synthesizer or the digital era there were records with all their clicks, pops, ticks and dust (not that that was ever a good thing); It was the muscial material that mattered.
Eydie Gorme & Trio Los Panchos is a traditional Spanish/Latin recording that should not only be listened to by the Spanish community. For non-Spanish speakers this would definitely open up their aural senses to the Panchos and Gorme's excellent craftsmanship of yesteryear. They would also be surprised at how many new Latin groups or artists out there today were just as equally inspired by them. Eydie Gorme and Trio Los Panchos took traditional Spanish love songs and ballads in 1964 and immortalized them. In fact, any young kids or music students taking lessons in classical guitar should be required to listen to this masterpeice ! Remember, music is universal and subjective no matter what language or era ...And to think when I was a kid how I hated for my dad to listen to this album.Canta En Espanol Overview

Duets With Spanish Guitar ReviewAt the first Grammy Awards in 1959, Salli Terri was nominated for Best Classical Performance, Vocal Soloist, along with Callas, Tebaldi, and Ferrell (Tebaldi won). The album did win the Grammy for Best Engineered Classical Record, a honor richly deserved as evidenced by the glorious sound of this CD.
I think a review in the May, 1958 issue of Hi-Fi & Music Review says it best: "...a prize winner in my collection. Laurindo Almeida's guitar playing captures the keen poignancy and rhythmic elan of Brazilian music with superb assurance and taste. He is joined by an excellent flutist, Martin Ruderman...and a mezzo-soprano whose velvet voice and astonishing flexibility has hardly an equal at present...Salli Terri. She sings Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 with a sinuousness and ecstasy which make this the finest modern version."
It is no wonder that Villa-Lobos himself called this the best recorded version of his composition...and 45 years after its original release, it stands the test of time. A prize winner, indeed!Duets With Spanish Guitar Overview

The Segovia Collection, Volume 9: The Romantic Guitar ReviewEvery classical Guitarist today owes a debt of gratitiude to Andres Segovia. He was not only an amazingly unique talent but an innovator as well. When he rediscovered the guitar it was a forgotten instrument that shared little respect from the musical community. He literally invented the technique that all classical guitarists use today. In addition he sought out and compiled thousands of lost pieces for the instrument. He also made many transcriptions of pieces written for other instruments such as the piano and translated them brilliantly into the language of the guitar. Out of the entire Segovia collection, this CD is my personal favorite for the diversity and choice of material. The waltzes are charming. My favorite cuts are Canzonetta and Song Without Words OP 19.no 6, both but Felix Mendelssohn. If you only buy one CD out of this collection it should be this one.The Segovia Collection, Volume 9: The Romantic Guitar Overview

Art of Segovia ReviewThis 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.
There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.
Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.
Art of Segovia OverviewFeaturing very little overlap with the four-CD box set The Segovia Collection, this two-disc set collection of popular guitar works features almost 20 minutes of music never before heard on compact disc.Genre: Classical MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 8-OCT-2002

De Colores and Other Latin American Folk Songs ReviewWow! If you are a kid or a middle-aged big kid (like me) and like Latino folk music, this album offers a treasury of goodies, ranging from traditional Mexican songs such as "El Chocolate," "La Arana Pequenita," and "La Granja" to a song from Puerto Rico, "El Coqui." The next to last song, "Paz y Libertad," is a hauntingly beautiful anthem to social justice and ecological issues, reminiscent of the early work of Pete Seeger. My only complaint is the paucity of liner notes, as I am left with the impression that Orozco is a fascinating person.
The Spanish is easy to understand and should prove popular in classrooms. Having listened to this album, I want to check out his ten-volume "Lirica Infantil. One final word: you may also want to get the accompanying book.De Colores and Other Latin American Folk Songs Overview
