Sea of Tears ReviewOne of my favorite CDs of the year, just a notch behind Jenny Lewis' "Acid Tongue." For musical details, I concur with the review by Colin Spence. I also concur with his evaluation of 4 and 1/2 stars but gave the CD five stars to balance out the Amazon tab. Jewell's music is very unlikely to reach mass media saturation (which is good) but it has already (and rather quickly) become popular with radio stations featuring an Americana format (which is also good since it will allow her to make a living, keep her superb band together and record more music in the future). It's not only difficult but also rather foolish to try to compete with a definitive cover version by The Who in their prime (i.e. Live At Leeds. I was so taken by Jewell's take on "Shakin' All Over" that I heard by chance on internet radio, however, that I made a point of finding out the performer and then buying the CD without bothering to listen to any other tracks. Because the CD as a whole is so likeable from the very first listen, this is a great CD to give as a gift to friends who enjoy hearing "undiscovered" musicians.Sea of Tears OverviewThe third record from Boise-ID singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell's Sea of Tears evokes the era of classic country and early British-invasion era blues rock .On her third album Eilen Jewellis more Dusty Springfield than Gillian Welch. Sea of Tears finds Jewell acknowledging her electric influences and the roots of rock and roll on the album's twelve tracks. On the record she pays homage to British invasion of the sixties, bands like The Kinks and The Animals; her forlorn, yet confident, delivery matches slow rock and resonant guitar sounds throughout the record. Although nine of the tracks are Jewell originals, the entire album could easily have been recorded over forty years earlier. Sea of Tears has a smooth sliding pace that is punctuated by a chill of sharp guitar and the tone can be summarized in the words of "Shakin' All Over." In the track, a cover of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' recording, Jewell expertly explains the album's sound in the lyrics, "Quivers down the back bone...shakin' all over." The slow syncopation on the record hits the listener like ice water on a hot sunny day, unexpected but appreciated.

Frank's Wild Years ReviewI first heard this back in college. At the time, it blew away antything else I was hearing & I think it single handedly changed my tastes in music. 15 years later I never tire of it. Which is probably why I'm writing this review.
Critics would have you believe this is the third installment of a trilogy that started with SWORDFISHTROMBONES. If anything, it stands as a precursor to the work he later did with Robert Wilson. This album is the music from a performance piece Waits wrote with his wife & collaborator, Kathleen Brennan. It played to sold out performances at the Steppenwolf Theatre in the mid 80's & if I had known who the hell Tom Waits was then, I'd certainly be in the 1st row.
"Hang On St. Christopher" comes off as a reckless itinerary for a fugitive of justice. The sparse use of horns coupled with Mark Ribot's signature guitar aid & abet for a long day's journey into night.
"Temptation" has to be one of my favorite Waits'tunes featuring a demented falsetto & chorus as seductive as the subject matter. If Stephen Foster wrote a song based off William Kennedy's IRONWEED, it might have sounded like "Innocent When You Dream". An undeiable classic, right up there with the likes of "Time " & "Tom Traubert's Blues".
Without a doubt, there's a pervading sense of gloom overiding this album but every song is a gem if you take the time to dust it off. From the drunken "RAWHIDE" trappings of "Yesterday Is Here" to the delerious Film Noir of "Telephone Call From Instanbul" , this album is a virtual mugshot of Waits at his height of his powers. If anyone could write a musical of Eugene O'Neill's ICEMAN COMETH, it's Tom Waits. And I have to say, FRANK'S WILD YEARS is the sonic equivalent. Its certainly one of the most ambitious records of his career. A roadtrip movie for the damned.Frank's Wild Years OverviewJapanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this 1987 album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Walking on a Wire: Richard Thompson (1968-2009) ReviewWho is reading this? If you are an RT fan, as I have been since Fairport days, was your first reaction the same as mine: why? I mean, I have every song in this box set on some other cd(s). But I had to have it anyway (as another review noted). It is a great career overview, the recording is pristine - these songs have never sounded better. And when I play RT now I tend to gravitate to his live releases. So I am really enjoying re-visiting these great songs. I would recommend this for the sound quality alone.
If you are not a big fan, or have heard the hype but do not really know his music, it is all warranted. Fairport Convention was a "folk rock" band from the 60's. (I italicize that because they were really so much more). There are only a few songs from this period here. (The box set A Fairport History has a much more comprehensive selection of RT from this period). The tracks here range from the upbeat rock of Time Will Show the Wiser to the folk of Genesis Hall and Crazy Man Michael to the long dirge Sloth, with it's ending guitar workout, RT already showing his chops (and Dave Swarbick adding his usual astounding fiddle). Then a couple tracks from RT's 1st solo effort, which was a great mish mosh of styles (in a good way).
His next period after leaving Fairport was with his wife Linda Thompson. This era produced some of the finest adult rock music ever. The songs are quite varied, acoustic and electric, happy and sad. Actually, together they recorded (lyrically) some of the most realistic love songs I have heard: Walking on a Wire; The Great Valerio; Did She Jump or Was She Pushed; Withered and Died; For Shame of Doing Wrong. This is not greasy kid stuff. These are mature songs for folks whose hearts have been around the block a few times and know the joy and pain of love. RT's lyrics really hit home in expressing these emotions. Balancing these are more upbeat rockers: When I Get to the Border, Calvary Cross, Bright Lights, Wall of Death and Sunnyvista. I am not listing every track, but this period was really strong, RT maturing both as a guitarist and songwriter. And having LT and RT trading vocals added to its strength. Richards playing is generally a showcase for restrained, "smart" guitar. Hero guitar for the thinking person. The electric pyrotechnics are there, but on record he does not go for the epic workouts his live shows are known for. And his acoustic work, well, everytime I close my eyes I hear 2 or 3 guitarists. No, it is not double tracked recording. For the uninitiated, check out the song Shoot Out the Lights (and the CD). Powerful, riveting, frightful, the sound of despair and loneliness at the breaking point with some jaw dropping guitar work. This was recorded as he and Linda's relationship was falling apart, and it is all documented in song. Brilliant.
After their breakup came his long and continuing solo career. Again, it the the variety of songs which is compelling. The common thread is the smart, adult lyrics, many of which all have a touch of cynicism. As well as the guitar. I could not possibly go through all the tracks. There are a lot of uptempo "rockers": Tear Stained Letter (one of his classics), Turning of the Tide, Valerie, I Feel so Good (..."I'm going to break somebody's heart tonight"), Razor Dance, Dad's Gonna Kill Me, Cooksferry Queen. Then the ballads which tell a story: the heartbreaking and fan favorite 1952 Vincent Black Lightening (lightening would be a good metaphor for his guitar work in this, eh?), Beeswing, Al Bowlly's in Heaven, Persuasion. Heck, there are just so many great songs here. The cynicism of She Twists the Knife Again; the poignent I Still Dream and Waltzing for Dreamers; the melancholic confession of I Misunderstood; the achingly lovely She Sang the Angels to Rest. Folks, every song here is truly great. And throughout this period RT always has had a great collection of backup musicians, Pete Zorn and Danny Thompson (no relation) prominent amoung them.
So, if you do not know RT, this is a great place to start, and perhaps all you will need. (His first 3-cd "box" has many of the same songs but balances this release nicely in that it includes a few essentials that are not here. The second box of unreleased stuff is essential for fans, but not the place to start if you are new to RT.)
Top twenty guitarist of all time? I love how rock magazines and critics have to rank things. If you, as I, have seen RT live both acoustic and electric he is beyond compare. Sure, there are other guitarists just as "great", though with different styles. How do you compare them? You cannot. But the things RT is capable of doing and his mastery of both the electric and acoustic are unparalled. One thing this box lacks, with one exception, is any of his epic live guitar workouts. I have seen him drop jaws many times with Shoot Out the Lights, Calvary Cross, Can't Win, Jerusalem on the Jukebox, Night Comes In, and others. (On his 2nd box set box I always had issue with the "guitar workouts" included on it; I have dozens better on numerous bootlegs). But here, we do get one gem: Hard on Me. I saw him do this a couple of years ago at the Tralf in Buffalo, and words cannot describe the workout he exercises on this song. I watched his hands so carefully, but the notes, the bends, it was all a blur of virtuosity. Again for the uninitiated, this song (especially the last 5 minutes) is a perfect example why RT has the reputation he does. (For further proof listen to the aforementioned acoustic work on 1952 Vincent Black Lightening). I kind of wish they included a couple more of these live killers, but, oh well, whatever, never mind.
Yeah, there are some favorites I would have like to have seen included, but I am not even going to bother listing them. RT picked this set, so who I am to quibble? I will echo another review: you gotta have this release. I love music and love lots of different kinds of music, but I cannot think of another box set that is top to bottom this good. Thanks Shout Factory. While Rhino still does a few good things, I appreciate that there are some labels that consistently get it right. Shout Factory is one of them. Attention all mature adults seeking intelligent rock written just for them: go buy this and enjoy it!Walking on a Wire: Richard Thompson (1968-2009) OverviewCareer-spanning four CD box set from the British Folk Rock legend spanning the years 1969-2009. The songs chosen for this selection of his work were carefully assembled and aim to provide a real sense of Richard Thompson, as well as to celebrate the diversity of hismusic - Rock 'n' Roll with Folk, Jazz, Rockabilly and the odd waltz thrown in - the scope of his songwriting, and the sheer virtuosity of his playing. Produced by Richard Thompson, Walking On A Wireimpressively includes 71 tracks from albums released by 15 different labels, and includes a 60 page booklet with new notes by Patrick Humphries.

Paradise ReviewA new recording by Judy Collins is always cause for celebration. Her latest "Paradise," consisting of ten selections, is no exception. The title of the CD comes from the last cut "Gauguin" by Jimmy Webb. "I'm going to go down to Paradise." This song is one of my least favorites although it may grow on me when I listen to it more. "Dens of Yarrow" is the kind of song that Judy recorded when she first started singing. What is amazing is that you would swear that she recorded it 50 years ago and not in 2010. On that one she plays the Roland keyboard. A little of that usually goes a long way with me but her accompaniment works here. "Kingdom Come" is the only song that Ms. Collins wrote. It is a tribute to the brave firefighters and others who lost their lives on 9/11. "They will not be forgotten."
"There is nothing wrong with Judy's rendition of the famous "Over the Rainbow" except she is the wrong Judy singing it. That song will always be Ms. Garland's unless you hear the incomparable version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole which will blow you out of the Pacific Ocean. "Weight of the World" is a fine but terribly sad song about a son and brother-- his sister tells the story-- going off to a war in a desert (It was the first time I saw my father cry.) We know of course that the dad cried on at least one other occasion when the military send her brother home in the dead of winter and the flag on the hometown football field flew at half-mast. (The Dixie Chicks sing a similar song "Travelin" Soldier" on their "Home" CD.)
My three favorite selections on the CD are "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Last Thing on My Mind," and "Diamonds and Rust." Ms. Collins in "Ghost Riders" has a great backup chorus consisting of Denver Collins, Joe Hurley, Bob Neuwirth, Tom Paxton, Paul Rolnick and Jimmy Webb. She recorded Tom Paxton's "The Last Thing on My Mind" years ago and re-records it here with an old boy friend Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash and sometimes Young who almost as many years ago wrote "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" in praise of Ms. Collins. It is great to hear their gentle harmonies on this one of my favorite songs--"Didn't mean to be unkind/you know that was the last thing on my mind." Stills plays 12-string guitar; Judy is on guitar on this arrangement. But the grand prize goes to "Diamonds and Rust," the song Joan Baez wrote and recorded for Bob Dylan. Here we have two of the great women's voices of the folk era-- if not the two best-- singing in what appears to be close harmony in a delicate and haunting arrangement of this beautiful song. They are accompanied by Russell Walden on piano and the Nashville Rhythm Section that provide perfect accompaniment for this perfect duet. The enduring appeal of "Diamonds and Rust" has to be its universality: the remembrance of a love so long ago, a love in which you gave more than you received and you still have feelings for the person you loved.
I wish we had been given the lyrics to the songs and that Ms. Collins had used another photograph for this CD even though she is still very beautiful and Annie Leibovitz, who according to the notes took the picture, is of course considered by some critics to be the best celebrity photographer alive. Russell Walden plays piano on many of the cuts and Larry Campbell picks the 12-string guitar on really fine instrumentals. Judy's silvery voice of course still captivates, still moves the listener, still shines just as it has throughout her long glorious career.Paradise Overview

Driving North ReviewIf you're a fan of singer/songwriters along the lines of Patty Griffin, Cheryl Wheeler, Lucinda Williams and Elyza Gilkyson, then there's a fairly good chance that you will rejoice in the music of Chris Pureka. This New England-based folkie combines lyrical songwriting ability with an emotionally expressive (and thoroughly husky) voice, drawing you in with her simple homespun songs about heartache, happiness and the change of the seasons. Drenching the songs in the imagery of her surroundings, Pureka creates a soundtrack for East Coast travels, evoking some to compare "Driving North" to Bruce Springsteen's early '80s masterpiece "Nebraska." On gorgeous ballads like "Unwelcome" and "3 a.m.," she nails matters of the heart, while on driving, insistent tunes like the haunting "Silo Song" and "Reprieve," she does the same with a ferocity that will instantly capture your attention. Listen to any of those tunes (not to mention "Burning Bridges" or the urgently soulful "Porch Songs") and try not to instantly fall in love with Pureka's music. In fact, I dare you.Driving North Overview

Rocky Mountain High ReviewI have been a musician now for over twenty years and no other musician has inspired me more than John Denver. I love acoustic music and John Denver's album "Rocky Mountain High" is acoustic music at its best. This album does have bite. It has some of the best acoustic guitar playing I have ever heard. From the opening lick on "Rocky Mountain High," which proclaims the reverent majesty of the mountains, this album is an homage to the environment, a subject very dear to JD. The title track is personally my very favorite song and it finally galvanized my desire to play the guitar. The song is not just about a man who lives in the rocky mountains, it is a personal anthem about the spiritual quest to find oneself.
"Mother Nature's Son" indeed is a song that JD made his own. I love the Beatles, but this is, in my opinion, the definitive version. "Paradise" was written by John Prine and is pure folk music. With the senseless destruction of the environment as its theme, it is interwoven with a nostalgic reminiscence for what once was. The love song and lullaby "For Baby (For Bobbie)" was an early song written by JD and first recorded back in his Mitchell Trio days. It displays one of JD's predominate talents...the gift of melody. Its a beautiful song, pure and simple. "Darcy Farrow" has become a classic folk tune and although it did not originate from JD it was another song that has become closely associated with him. It is another example of poignant and heartfelt finger-style guitar playing and singing that JD was a master craftsman at. It is another personal favorite song of mine to sing and play on the guitar.
"Prisoners" is one of the many songs in JD's career that are rare undiscovered gems. Many people all know his big hits, but delightfully sprinkled throughout the albums in his catalog are songs such as this. Prisoners also demonstrates that his song writing did, at times, cover some dark themes that are common to humanity. In "Goodbye Again" JD returns to a familiar theme in his music; the sorrow and the hardships of living a musicians peripatetic lifestyle. The song reveals one of the motives that drove JD to sing. As a musician I can relate to the desire to stand in front of people and communicate through music. It is a powerful drive. The album closes with the "Season Suite." It is a celebration of the seasons, and life in general. JD includes an instrumental "fifth season" "Late Winter, Early Spring." It is perhaps one of the most relaxing and meditative works ever done on the guitar. The playing reflects the genius of Mike Taylor, JD's lead guitar player at the time. It took me a couple of months to figure out his lead work, and now I perform that song any chance I get. This has been a little trek through John Denver's best album; if you purchase it, you will not be disappointed.Rocky Mountain High Overview

New Day Yesterday ReviewI saw Joe and his band "LIVE" before I bought this CD. He had filled in for Gov't Mule when Allen Woody had died just two days before. Unfortunately there were only about 85 people there MAX!(Unfortunate for those who did not attend). When they broke into the first song (Rory Gallagher's Cradle Rock)you would have thought they were playing in front of a sold out stadium!!! They NEVER let up! They continued to [rock] out of every song they played! When I got the CD I wasn't expecting "ANYTHING" like the show I had seen but...........IT WAS BETTER! Produced perfectly and has that "LIVE" feel to every song. Has a few "Guest's" also! Joe Bonamassa is absolutely, positively the BEST Blues/Rock Guitar Player out there right now! "LOOK OUT KENNY WAYNE SHEPERD AND JONNY(WHO)? There is a NEW kid in town and he is about to take over the spot Stevie Ray left void!! You can see him live now in "VERY SMALL" venues but when the word get's out..........LOOK OUT! "BUY THIS CD if you like SRV, Rory Gallagher,"Old" Eric Clapton, Chris Duarte, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jimi Hendrix, Albert King; YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD!!!!"New Day Yesterday Overview

Sea Sew ReviewLisa Hannigan's first solo album, and what an amazingly beautiful freshman effort.
Lisa played with Damien Rice for some time, in fact Volcano is probably one of my favorite songs because she, Damien, and the cello all sounded like perfect musical instruments. It's a shame that Rice asked her to split off onto her own. She appears with him on these two Damien Rice albums O,9 - both are masterpieces when she sings.
Sea Sew is one of those delicate beautifully mixed clear albums that is just a pleasure to listen to. Lisa's voice and phrasing shows a number of influences, but she is never derivative of their music. She has a unique style that is very easy to recognize. On different tracks, I'm reminded of Jane Birkin (ex fan de sixties), Edie Brickel (shooting rubber bands at the stars), Bjork (her early work, maybe even sugar cubes days), Her Irishness comes out frequently, just enough pleasant lilt.
Her voice has a wonderful range, from whisper quiet with a the tiniest bit of rasp to clear clean beautiful full singing. Notes are always hit perfectly (no pitchiness here dog). The recording has wonderful imaging. The mix is well balanced, Lisa's voice is crystal clear backed by musical instruments at exactly the right volume.
The packaging is worth mentioning - all paper and paper board. The disc fits in a slot just inside the front cover. The 10 page stapled insert includes the musician credits, most of the song lyrics (a few are missing), and the standard thank yous at the end. The cover is a photograph of a knit and stitched piece Lisa and Frances Hannigan did.
Ocean and A Rock - beautiful violin accompanies her voice starting off with a low intimate whisper. Slowly builds through the song to include a nicely played trumpet. The volume of this song stays constant, there is none of that annoying very quiet first one minute of the song and then blarring sound at the end.
Venn Diagram - oh such a beautiful singing of something so mathematical. There is an interesting drum beat driving through this song. Lisa's ha ha ha's are, well a bit exciting.
Sea Song - The cello back drop on this song is wonderful. The tone of her voice works very well with violin and cello. This song is a bit weaker compared to the rest, a little sing songy.
Splishy Splashy - beautiful guitar opening. This song seems like it should be silly, but in fact has a melancholy tone in contrast to the words. "Have your coffee splishy splashy" imagine those words sung slightly sad, each word emphasized. It's remarkable how she can use her voice so well to make words and music sound sad (there is a xylophone made to sound like a child's toy).
I Don't Know - another track with a driving drum and trumpet. It's probably the most radio playable song of the disc. It's a sweet song.
Keep It All - has almost a Cowboy Junkies vibe to it. A standout on the disc. Driving drum beat, bass line, cello, and guitar. Where the lead singer of Cowboy Junkies always sounded like she was on Qualueds, Lisa Hannigan has all her senses and hits perfect notes. One of my more favorite cuts on this disc.
Courting Blues - the only song Lisa did not write, and my least favorite. There's a fair amount of dissonance, not unpleasant.
Pistachio - a cute song. Probably sounds the most like Bjork mixed with Jane Birkin. A few times the singing rolls off to almost speaking. It's an interesting enjoyable effect. The lyrics are just so much fun and oddly have an exciting side to them.
Teeth - Almost hate to say it this way, but it's sort of folk music meets a movie soundtrack or show tune (without all the horns and huge orchestra). The song is just fine, not a standout.
Lille - the most Irish folk song of the disc. Just a beautiful song.
Overall, this is a very solid disc. Personally I would purchase the CD for the lovely packaging. There's maybe one or two tracks that I might not download, if I were picking and choosing. A case of very well done mix, recorded lovingly, and with care.
Lisa was a standout to me on the Damien Rice albums. She demonstrates that she is not a one trick pony, or the background singer. She is a solid artist in her own right.Sea Sew Overview

Way To Blue - An Introduction To Nick Drake (Remastered) ReviewMusic reviews are difficult because we each hear the music differently. Our experience with an eclectic array of musical ideas frames how we hear the music.
My college years were 67-71 so I had broad exposure to the early English invasion - my favorites included the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Cream. At the same time I appreciated many American groups - Beach Boys, Byrds, Blood Sweat and Tears.
As time passed I experienced jazz and began to appreciate more textures in the music. Early jazz influences included the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Weather Report and Miles Davis.
Favorite singer/songwriters included James Taylor, Carol King, Joni Mitchell and early Elton John.
I write all this to give context to my perceptions of Nick Drake.
Nick Drake wrote beautiful, complex songs during his brief career. He did not write boring 3 chord progressions. Rather his music has many layers of complexity. While I do not find his lyrics profound, along with the music, I find them haunting.
For me the test of a CD is how often I want to listen to it. Does it addict me? Do the songs stay fresh as they become familar?
Nick Drake succeeded - even though few knew it at the time. His songs are timeless because his music remains interesting and unpredictable. He wrote uniquely - and that is wonderful.
So for those who do not hear the music as I and many other fans do - de gustibus non est disputandum. This CD meets my standard of greatness.
So who will like it - those who like their music a bit more complex - those who find that music creates mood - those who like Van Morrison, Jimmie Spheeris, and Leonard Cohen.Way To Blue - An Introduction To Nick Drake (Remastered) OverviewWay To Blue - An Introduction To Nick Drake (Remastered) by Nick Drake

Me and Armini ReviewBorn to an Italian father and Icelandic mother, Emiliana made a few albums when she was young that only saw release in Iceland, but with her widely released "Love In The Time Of Science" she gained a wider audience in Europe.
She worked closely with multi-instrumentalist Dan Carey on "Fisherman's Woman" and on that album and this new one you can notice how well suited they are together, comfortable to explore any avenues that they encounter, and make something worthwhile out of it.
Turns in co-writing Kylie Minogue single "Slow", and lending her vocals to the spectral Gollum's Song over the credits to "The Lord of the Rings", are other notable, and slightly surprising, facts about her.
Her seventh album sees her embracing a quietly startling range of mainly acoustic moods: from exuberant, rackety rock and roll through reflectively picked ballads to the stalkerish reggae bounce of the title track.
The simple, stripped down instrumentation - often little more than Emiliana's crystalline voice, a guitar and understated keyboards - seem perhaps a little too languid and sparse, even a little samey. But an extended stay reveals sharp jolts of beauty, delicate little flourishes and unexpected oddities hidden in the apparently simple song structures.
There's a murky undertone to a lot of the tracks on this album, from stalker-ish lyrics ("Me And Armini"), to cynical and sardonic perspectives ("Ha Ha", "Heard It All Before"), to menacingly sexy ("Gun"), modern day narratives that reflect the darkness of obsession, lust and heartbreak.
But then there is "Big Jumps" and "Jungle Drum", both emanate an exuberant skewed positivity, and a few others in the reflective, laid back, optimistic style she is so good at, which dispels some of the gloom.
All in all, "Me And Armini is a less introspective affair, showcasing excellent folk styled poppy numbers, with dark and delicate tension.
Love in the Time of Science
Fisherman's WomanMe and Armini OverviewFollowing on from her critically acclaimed sets 'Love In The Time Of Science' and her first for Rough Trade 'Fisherman's Woman', the forthcoming 'Me And Armini' sees her working once again with her long time producer/collaborator Dan Carey resulting in what we feel is destined to be one of the albums of 2008. 'Me And Armini' is a hugely ambitious and aspirational pop record with Emiliana's soaring voice centre stage, bolstered by a rich gamut of musical styles. From the summery skank of the title track to the surging, breathless, first single 'Jungle Drum' and yearning, spine-tingling 'Big Jumps' and much more in between 'Me And Armini' is a truly fantastic album.

Get Lucky Review"I'm writing too many songs, and then I have to put them out --- I'm sorry," Mark Knopfler said at the start of what seems like our annual phone call.

But if Knopfler is going to make CDs like 'Get Lucky', he can call me every few months --- these eleven songs are completely original short stories and character sketches, set against music by one of the planet's greater guitarists. That the quality is uniformly high is no surprise.

What did take me aback --- and what will make fans of Dire Straits and Knopfler's previous solo releases shake their heads --- is that Knopfler seems to have assembled this CD without regard for the commercial marketplace. Nothing that says "automatic Top 10" jumps out at you like 'Punish the Monkey (Let the Organ Grinder Go)' from 'Kill to Get Crimson' or 'Boom Like That' from 'Shangri-La'.

The likely result: The guy whose band sold 120 million records has made a CD that will be appreciated mostly by hardcore fans --- and the smallest cohort of music lovers: smart, literate grownups.
An unwillingness --- or is it an inability? --- to compromise. A curiosity, at 60, about songwriting that explores new personal territory. A concern, in all things, for authenticity. You don't have to talk to Mark Knopfler long before you realize that these are bred in the bone. Listen:

Jesse Kornbluth: Three words: Dire Straits reunion.

Mark Knopfler (audible sigh): These days, it does seem to be the style. But putting the brakes on when I did [he disbanded Dire Straits in 1995] was right. I'm happy with the way things are.

JK: We're talking about the easiest $300 million you'll ever make!

MK: I'm looking to do more of what I do --- improve my recordings and playing the new music live, enjoying the variations that brings.

JK: At a conference, I heard Steve Jobs quote The Beatles: "You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead." I hear that idea running through your new CD. There's a lot of life experience --- people on the far side of young love, lost comrades, memories of a distant childhood.

MK: The road ahead --- yes, it's a different picture. I have become a bit of a veteran at this music thing, so there's some of what made me. One song, 'Cleaning My Gun', is from the vet's viewpoint, the survivor's viewpoint. I've made a couple of notes where it's possible to tell you the background of some of the songs. But I try not to interfere too much or explain. I don't want to spoil the songs for you; I'd prefer that it's going to be what you want it to be.

JK: In 'Remembrance Day', you sing the names of those --- war dead, it seems --- now under the "earthen roof". Are they men you knew?

MK: It's just a list of boys. It begins with a cricket team. In a lot of communities, cricket teams and football teams --- and in America, baseball teams --- were the kids who went to war.

JK: That's the closest you come to social criticism on this CD. There's no wry, angry song like "Punish the Monkey". Is Knopfler mellowing?

MK: The older I get, the more grouchy I become. I have some equally disagreeable friends who are walking partners with me in the morning. We get most of our bile out then. By the time I get home, I feel better.

JK: I think of a Bruce Springsteen CD that, according to his manager, had no obvious hit single. Bruce went home and dashed off 'Dancing in the Dark'. And the entire world bought 'Born in the USA'. In contrast, I fear that 'Get Lucky' will be under-appreciated because it's merely gorgeous.

MK: It does occur to me I need to have someone like that.

JK: I see you have one concert scheduled this month --- then your schedule looks blank until May of 2010. This can't be.

MK: I'm trying to work out a way to pop over to America and do Prairie Home Companion or Letterman, just by myself. And there will be a tour from April to July.

JK: Didn't Dire Straits once do 250 concerts in a year?

MK: When you're young and in a band, it's like you have a football under your arm ---- you're running. But some of that is running away.

JK: Fender has just launched the Mark Knopfler Stratocaster. Do you use it or just endorse it?

MK: I play it on stage instead of my old one. It works better. It has all the things I specified: a rosewood finger board, nice big smooth frets. Other owners seem to like it too.

JK: Michael Jordan wore a new pair of Nike shoes every night. Do you have more than one Knopfler Strat?

MK: I can make a lot of money for charity by playing one at an event and then selling it. So I'll generally be using a new one....

JK: I see your high standards as an affront to our rapidly deteriorating culture. They reassure those of us who care about these things that we're not alone, not crazy. In that sense, "Get Lucky" is a comfort. Can you relate?

MK: There's been an erosion, and not just in the United States. It becomes more important for people who regard themselves as having the ability to discern and feel to stand tall.

JK: So market-directed music....

MK: I'm sorry. Those words are meaningless to me.
'Get Lucky' is Exhibit A.

Rain Dogs ReviewI have long loved Tom Waits, and have a host of his albums, but this gem of a record remains by far his best effort. It isn't just that many of his best songs are on this album, but that virtually all of the songs are at least highly listenable. The quality of RAIN DOGS can be seen in the fact that a large number of artists have recorded this album's songs.
Musically, the amazing arrangements sound like Kurt Weill meets Captain Beefheart meets a carnival barker meets a bottle of bourbon. As the album begins and moves from "Singapore" to "Clap Hands," you know that you are not dealing with a three-chords-and-a-cloud-of-dust performer. What is stunning after the album's first few songs, however, is how lyrical Waits becomes as the album goes on. For all the raucousness of some of the numbers, it is easily balanced by the beauty of songs like "Downtown Train," the gorgeous "Time," or the mournfully drunken "Blind Love." Waits employs a crack back up band, with significant guess appearances with performers like Keith Richards. The star back up musician is, however, Marc Ribot, who as he so often does provides stunningly original guitar lines that embellish every song upon which he appears.
Lyrically, Waits has never been better, turning out one superb line after another. Several of the songs read as more than decent poetry, and many individual lines pop out, such as (from "Time") "The things you can't remember tell the thing you can't forget" or, in the best line about being down, down and out I have heard, "When you're east of East St. Louis" (with apologies to East St. Louis). Or what about this great line from "Blind Love": "They say if you get far enough away/You'll be on your way back home." Even some of the less well-known songs on the album, like "Tango Till They're Sore," are lyrically stunning.
I'm a big fan of Tom Waits, but while in his other albums I always find him at least interesting, I still find there are a lot of individual songs that aren't up to the level of his best work. RAIN DOGS is Tom's best album partly because it contains many of his best songs, but partly because it contains absolutely none of his worse. This is all the more remarkable given the fact that RAIN DOGS was one of the first albums to take advantage of the greater capacity of CDs to expand the number of cuts. Despite the larger number of songs, there are no weak cuts and no filler.Rain Dogs OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: WAITS,TOMTitle: RAIN DOGSStreet Release Date: 06/01/1990

Greatest Hits ReviewOne might argue that David Gray's claim to fame must be his 1998 album White Ladder which spawned such deserving hits as Babylon, Please Forgive Me, This Year's Love and Sail Away, all of which are represented on the collection of hits. Actually there's more. The title of the disc is a little off. It's more a best-of though incomplete, which is not too surprising.
However, as an intro to Gray's mastery, this 1-disc set suffices. His essential songs are culled from Ladder and the two follow-up, A New Day at Midnight and Life in Slow Motion. There's the incredibly sensitive Be Mine and the heart-aching The One I Love. Older and less known material shows up in the form of a live version of Shine and Flame Turned Blue, both of which cannot do enough justice to Gray's earlier works. The bitter song Slow Motion from his last album is sorely missing. Of course, the two cursory new tracks, You're the World to Me and Destroyer rounds up the disc. (B+)Greatest Hits Overview

Roman Candle ReviewI know that all albums, especially when compared by fans of an artist, come down to a matter of opinion, but I feel compelled to give mine: this is my favorite.
I own all of Smith's album releases and treasure them all, but while most people seem to rank Either/Or first on their lists, I put it at least third. It's just how I feel about the songwriting. Roman Candle is the second of his that I heard and the one I most often go back to. Here's why:
It's not the under-production, because I never really care about that. It's the simplified suggestiveness of the songwriting that tells you he can do more, but he knows he doesn't have to. The non-specific song titles (No Name #1) have never bothered me because they speak so well for themselves. It's not a long album, but it's strong from start to finish. It seems to reach its climax at "Last Call," a tremendous song by any standards, and then delivers the instrumental "Kiwi maddog 20/20" as a sort of afterthought. That last one is in a style that's hard for my friends and me to typify. And that lack of type is what makes this album so great to me.
It is his debut solo work, as far as I know, and it certainly sounds like a man finding his voice, which is not to say he is less than qualified (as my rating of 5 stars indicates) but rather he is new in his confidence as a writer.
Simply put, it's fantastic. There are few albums I can recommend as strongly.Roman Candle Overview

Boz Scaggs - Greatest Hits Live ReviewWhen my Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits Live DVD arrived from Amazon, it was Heaven on Earth for me. I now have Boz in my home in video anytime I want.
The performance and the audio and video quality are superb. The use of HD cameras clearly shows. Having both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio on the DVD is fantastic. I wish every DVD would do that. The DTS is clearly the winner. DTS puts you front row center with a presence that Dolby can't match.
This DVD is best experienced on a large-screen HDTV with DTS 5.1 audio. It's as close to being at a live Boz performance as you can get. Nothing can beat a live Boz performance, but the DVD is clearly the next best thing. However, whatever your TV and audio setup, you've got to have this DVD in your music video collection.
Boz just gets better with age, and seeing and hearing his greatest hits as he performs them "live" is like hearing them for the first time. It would be impossible for me to pick one song on the DVD as my favorite. They're all great.
Boz' voice is haunting, but it's not just his voice that makes him a unique jewel. His songs are original and magnificent in their lyrics and musicality. In today's world of sound-alike, interchangeable performers, there's no one else like Boz Scaggs.Boz Scaggs - Greatest Hits Live Overview* His first ever live DVD * Filmed in high definition video * Mixed in stereo and surround sound * Bonus features include extra track, 15 minute documentary, and photo gallery From his early days with the Steve Miller Band, to his smash hits as a solo performer, Boz Scaggs has been a respected musician for decades. Greatest Hits Live features Scaggs in concert at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, and as Scaggs himself says, "It's not just any band that can pull off this song list." From the jazz-tinged "Harbor Lights," to the desperately blue "Loan Me a Dime," to hit songs including "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle," Greatest Hits Live provides a powerful overview of the artist's most recognized work. 1. Lowdown 2. Slow Dancer 3. Heart of Mine 4. It All Went Down the Drain 5. Harbor Lights 6. Jojo 7. Ask Me 'Bout Nothin' but the Blues 8. Breakdown Dead Ahead 9. Look What You've Done To Me 10. I Just Go 11. Georgia 12. Miss Sun 13. Lido Shuffle 14. Runnin' Blues 15. Loan Me a Dime 16. We're All Alone

Hotel Lights ReviewTake one part singer sounding like front-man Fran Healy of Travis, and add to that one part singer sounding like Matthew Caws of Nada Surf. Mix in soft acoustic guitar, at times-Weezer like keyboards, and melodic moody Ben Folds familiar sounding piano, and you now have the recipe for Hotel Lights. Speaking of Ben Folds, how this guy Darren Jessee was hiding behind Ben Folds Five on drums is like wondering about Dave Grohl's misplaced song writing talent behind Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. At some point in their careers, both Grohl and Jessee needed to be front and center leading their own bands. Here's the goods on Hotel Lights, they are well equipped with talent! The song writing is difficult to imagine anyone writing in 2 weeks, and upon listening to the album endlessly, as I have, you might wonder if there is any truth to that rumor. If it is true, then my guess is, you are going to be hearing a lot of this band in the future. Here's some good advise...listen to this album more than once, it will capture a place in your head and heart. It did mine.Hotel Lights OverviewDarren Jessee started Hotel Lights after many years of writing songs, playing drums and touring in the trio, Ben Folds Five. Moving back to his home state of North Carolina, he put together his ideal band that included former Archers of Loaf drummer Mark Price and producer / guitarist Al Weatherhead.. Together they made a record you'll want to hear every day, with pop songs that you get closer to after each listen-like your favorite Nick Drake record or something off of Court and Spark. The music is richly layered with melodious keyboards, crisp guitars, soft pianos and a generally laid-back feel. Like The band, Hotel Lights play with authority and confidence, creating their own brand of timeless pop. Jessee's vocals are as distinct and endearing as the songs themselves. His warm, warbled tenor is similar to a mellower version of The Shins or a more heavenly Will Oldham. But it's his lyrics that set him apart from his peers, with an honest, storytelling quality.!He writes about the "Marvelous Truth", laments the golden age of 70's radio hits, and repeatedly touches upon the holy trinity of great pop records: love, loss, and starting over.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Superwolf ReviewUp to this point, my knowledge of Bonnie Prince consisted of Master and Everyone, Ease Down the Road, and I See a Darkness (which, in my humble opinion, contains the greatest love song ever written in All Around).
I had absolutely no knowledge of Matt Sweeney.
Given that, when I popped in Superwolf, the sound initially caught me off guard. I persisted, of course, and was rewarded with a fantastically woven tapestry of lyricism and melody. It's chock full of the sweet, easy melodies, harmonizing vocal overlays, and well-placed crescendos characteristic of Oldham's earlier stuff.
Favorite tracks:
Bed is for Sleeping - "Bed is for sleeping, love is for making, you know, love, I am yours for the taking."
Lift Us Up - "People, don't you wonder how the Lord has brought you under?"
Only Someone Running - "If you melted, then I would melt myself all into you"Superwolf OverviewThe vaunted collaboration between singer Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & guitar-slinger Matt Sweeney. It all started when Bonny challenged Matt to write some songs. When Matt did so with relative ease, then it was Bonnie's turn to be challenged to write. Which he did with aplomb, in various glamorous locations around the globe (these two birds are nothing if not jet-setters). Once they'd worked it all out, they took it to Rove Studios in Kentucky, where Paul Oldham rendered it all with a crafty hand. The results are Superwolf, a record decidedly in the Fool to Cry vein of heart-weary but soul-lifting blue (and black) ballads. Stripped down & strapped on, Superwolf will fuck you up & down.

Music for Native Americans - O.S.T. ReviewThis CD is beautiful. Theres a ephemeral, spiritual sound to it, yet at the same time its so very modern. I can't think of a good way to explain it, but the music is wonderful. Someof the songs, such as "Coyote Dance", "Ancestor Song" and "Twistd Hair", call to mind beautiful spiritual images in your head. The sound effects and lyrics on "Twisted Hair" in particular still stand out in my mind. Others, such as "Mahk Jchi", "Cherokee Morning Song" and "Akua Tuta", blend traditional Native American music stylings with modern rhythms for a breath taking effect. Many of these songs incorporate other Native American artists, such as Rita Coolidge and Kashtin.
However, the most interesting songs on this CD are the ones that come from Robbie Robertson himself. The lyrics to "Ghost Dance", "It is a Good Day to Die" and "Skinwalker" are haunting and will almost certain stick in your mind long after you've finished listening to this CD. The sound effects and soft-spoken voices meld perfectly together with the powerful and moving lyrics to create a magnificent effect. This is one of my favorite Native American CDs and I simply can't recommend it enough, esecially for people unfamilar with contemporary Native American music.Music for Native Americans - O.S.T. Shoot Out the Lights (2-Disc Deluxe Edition) ReviewThey should have called their concert appearances to support this album "The Divorce Tour" or "Break Up Tour. "Shoot Out the Lights" remains a seminal 80's album and one of Richard and Linda Thompson's finest achievements. Although it wasn't written about their martial discord, "Shoot Out the Lights" certainly reflected the aftermath of failing marriage. A spare, brilliantly written/performed/produced album and one of the Thompson's towering achievements.
When this review was written it was still cheaper to order this through Rhinohandmade.com
As many fans know this was the second attempt to make the album the first was with Hugh Murphy (and Gerry Rafferty)and Richard wasn't happy with the result. He, Linda and producer Joe Boyd started all over again. The first disc is the original album (unfortunately none of the earlier tracks are here and "Living in Luxury" hasn't been added back to the CD. It was never on the album but was a b-side to the single).
The second disc consists of the surviving live recordings taken from the multitracks for the San Francisco, Santa Cruz appearances and from soundboard cassetttes. The multitracks were damaged for most of these performances (some of them irrepairably)but Ed Haber working with the Rhino team managed to restore some of these for this set. Sound quality is surprisingly good given the various sources and damaged state of some of these tapes and Haber along with input from Richard and Linda Thompson has assembled the best surviving performances for an 11 track CD:
1. Dargai
2. Backstreet Slide
3. Pavane
4. I'll Keep It with Mine
5. Borrowed time
6. Did She Jump or Was She Pushed?
7. I'm A Dreamer
8. Honky Tonk Blues
9. Shoot Out the Lights
10. For Shame of Doing Wrong
11. Dimming of the Day (and a "hidden" track at the end of the CD--"Price of Love"--from a cassette recording so the quality does fall a bit).
All of these have never been released before and since the only other full length concert recording is from a 1975 show, it's nice to have these tracks as well. Sadly, Joe Boyd DIDN'T record the L.A. shows which were by all accounts outstanding so this is all we have with good sound (at least "offically").
The CDs are housed in an oversized hardcover book with a deluxe booklet including comments/interviews from the Thompsons' band, Haber as well as Joe Boyd. The original lyrics are also included presented in the same typeface and design as on the inner sleeve for the original vinyl album (and on the booklet for the earlier CDs as well). It's kind of big to store with your regular CDs but you could do what I did and just rip the songs from the CDs for listening in the car. I'm sure some folks might not like the design but I did--it isn't as big as most "boxed sets" and it adds quality to it in my opinion.

While I think this is a terrific two disc set, it's a pity that Rhino couldn't (or wouldn't due to cost concerns)license the material from the aborted first attempt to make the album. The few tracks that have turned up were on the "Watching the Dark" third disc anthology that Ed Haber put together and "Dreams Fly Away". I would have loved to see those tracks here as part of a third disc. It's also possible that Richard or Linda nixed the idea of including these tracks but I suspect it was more a licensing/cost issue since some have appeared before.
Early editions of this album on CD also include the bonus track so you can find "Living in Luxury" there.
The inclusion of this material would have made this the ultimate edition of this great album. These minor quibbles shouldn't prevent you from buying this though as it is worth it for fans if only for the second live disc AND the exceptional packaging of the set.
Highly recommended.Shoot Out the Lights (2-Disc Deluxe Edition) Overview

All Songs Considered from NPR ReviewMy name is Bob Boilen; I am director of NPR's All Things Considered. If you know the program, you may have found yourself curious about the little music snippets you've heard between news stories. I pick much of that music. After many years and many thousands of requests, there is this CD. It contains some of those great "buttons" that have been a signature of our daily news program.
This CD is filled with mostly unknown independent artists. There is a great piano tango, remarkable guitar music, a Norwegian fiddle tune, Hungarian Cymbalom music played with 8 "bowhammers", Spanish accordion, American jazz, a rock dirge and other music that is better heard than described.
I compiled this cd so I'm biased, but the musicians on this record are remarkable, and I hear a lot of music. Each song is a wonderful journey. I tried to put together a collection that on the one hand is eclectic but on the other is very accessable. The cd also benefits National Public Radio. Enjoy !
