Long Road Out of Eden Review28 years after their last studio album, four remaining Eagles release a new album. Long Road out of Eden features 2 discs and 20 new tracks. Disc 1 is described as being a re-introduction to the band with the opening track a post nuclear vision of Seven Bridges Rd, followed by a song they forgot to record 35 years ago "How Long" by long time friend JD Souther. This stamps Eagles all over it and just gets better each time you hear it. Harmonies and all the little things which most bands would overlook, make this a classic already in the Take it Easy, Already Gone genre. Next up is Busy Being Fabulous which is an update of Those Shoes with a killer chorus and typically cynical Henley lyric. Has the Eagles sound. Next is a weepie with a countrified Frey vocal. Quite nice, Walsh steps up next with Guilyy of the Crime, whilst being pleasant is a little removed from the other material on this disc. Next up is the first of Tim Schmit's spots with a brilliant (single written all over it)I Don't want to Hear Anymore, is simply brilliant. Won't fit on contemporary radio but anyone reading this won't care anyway. Disc 1's highlight follows with Waiting in the Weeds. How to describe this song? It starts of as an acoustic, black, Henley vocal and shifts into an epic from 1st Chorus/Bridge on when Schmit/Frey's harmonies kick in. Its low fi, acoustic guitars and mandolin, but segues into something much more, the lyrics tell so many stories with multi dimensions and layers. By the end of the 7 minutes its a totally different beast, with an undeniable stamp of class. This track makes the 28 year wait all worth it.
After Weeds, all the other would seem insubstantial but in true Eagles tradition the material all stands up. No More Cloudy Days will have its fans, followed by Henley doing his best Bee Gee's impression on Fast Company. This has a killer chorus and will grow on you. Next up is a piece of Schmit brilliance with Do Something, more like his Poco work & Frey closes with another highlight You Are Not Alone.
If that wasn't enough we still have another whole disc, with the title track starting it off. This track will need some play to make it accessible but already the biting lyrics, killer Walsh guitar and atmospherics make it a dramatic, masterful tune. Long time collaborater, Jack Tempchin pitches in with a Frey lead vocal, Somebody which is a foot stomper. Henley next with Frail Grasp of the Big Picture, very Inside Job-like. Walsh with a JD Souther assist comes up with the Steely Dan like Last Good Time in Town. Frey with I like to watch a Woman Dance, is low-fi and voyeuristic, but pleasant, Three songs left, all good especially Centre of the Universe which is a modern update of the whole sound. I'm still trying to decide what the lyrics mean but I'm sure George W Bush won't download it. Business as Usual is another which could be a Henley single but has the superb Eagles harmony support. Slightly rocky, confrontational, another winner. Then the closer which if its the last song ever from the Eagles then its a fitting epitaph, lets hope its not, as this album has proved that the Eagles biggest fear is unfounded and that they are still important, vibrant, and quite simply America's greatest ever rock band.Long Road Out of Eden OverviewJapanese only SHM pressing. Ultimate Collection ReviewThis is the best compilation of Mr. Faith's orchestrations I have seen yet. Some of the music on this CD I have heard on easy listening radio stations in the 1970s that I have not seen released on CD until this set came out, such as the lush and velvety rendition of Burt Bacharach's tune "Always Something There to Remind Me", with great strings and brass. This is a great set and well worth the money.Ultimate Collection Overview

Acoustic France ReviewA sweet sampling of the Nouvelle Scene, a modern musical movement that revives and reworks some of France's best musical traditions, producing sweet acoustic tunes with sleek, sly lyrics. Some of these artists were familiar to me from a bit of persistent poking around on the Amazon-France website, but many were not... The most famous singer here, of course, is model-gone-musician Carla Bruni (these days also known as "Mrs. Sarkozy," the newly-minted wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy...) who contributes one fine, understated track from her delicious debut album. And if you loved that record, you'll delight in this disc as well. There's plenty more soft-voiced acousto-crooning on here, too, including Constance Amiot and JP Nataf (both on the fab Tot Ou Tard label) and others. The best discovery for me was actress Sandrine Kiberlain, whose "Le Quoditien" is an album highlight. (I've since picked up her first album, and love it!)
There's also a bit of gypsy jazz from guitarist Romane as well as from Thomas Dutronc (the son of French pop superstars Jacques Dutronc and Francoise Hardy) as well as some crazed, catchy Eastern European hybridization from the multi-national, San Francisco-based Rupa & The April Fishes. All in all, this is a really nice record, the kind of album you can leave in rotation for weeks on end and never grow tired of. Recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To French Pop)Acoustic France OverviewExperience the romance and charm of Paris and the French countryside with Acoustic France, a CD collection featuring contemporary chanson and acoustic pop by established stars and up-and-coming artists from today's thriving French music scene.Inspired by the classic styles of an earlier generation, young artists are borrowing from old-school chanson, folk and Gypsy jazz to create an appealing modern sound. The music captures the ambiance of strolling along the Seine or sipping wine in a café on a beautiful summer day. These days, the acoustic singer-songwriter movement of the 60s and 70s is being revived by a new generation of artists. Called the Nouvelle Scène, or New Scene, it includes many of the artists featured on this collection who combine traditional sounding melodies with contemporary attitude. Featured alongside established stars are several exciting artists who have spent much of their lives outside of France.Constance Amiot was raised by French parents in West Africa and the Washington DC area before settling in France a few years ago.Acadian artist Pascal Lejeune's French/English song "Bilingue in Paris" tells of a romantic moment between two lovers in Paris.Rupa & the April Fishes is a San Francisco-based group. Lead singer and songwriter Rupa spent many of her formative years in southern France, where her mother still resides. A portion of the proceeds from Acoustic France will be donated to La Chaîne de l'Espoir (The Chain of Hope), an organization that provides

From Russia with Love ReviewI received "From Russia with Love" as a gift from Switzerland in the mail. After listening to the music I immediately checked out the web site from Helmut Lotti and was stunned to learn that Helmut is not a Russian. Listening to his music in "From Russia with Love", I was convinced this was a Russian singing, not only that, every piece of music on this CD is simply outstanding. I have rarely enjoyed a CD to this extent. The singing is outstanding, the Russian choir quality and so is the orchestra. I am delighted and pleased that we access to such a treat. From Russia with Love Overview

I'll Play for You ReviewIf you are a Seals and Crofts fan, and you know how big they were from 1972, "SUMMER BREEZE" until 1978, "Takin' It Easy", then you have felt a lot of anxiety and frustration over the fact that their CDs have not been available,---"EVER!!!" Yes, the 10 song Greatest Hits is out there and "Summer Breeze" has been available. (We were even lucky enough to have a budget copy of "Diamond Girl" tossed our way a few years back!) But, about nine Seals and Crofts albums have never seen the light of day until this month!!
"I'll Play For You" (1975) was released while Jim and Dash were still hot on the charts and pouring out one great album per year. "Get Closer" followed it up in 1976, then their popularity began to wane. "I'll Play for You" was very poppy but it was also quite diverse. From the emotional "song-writer styled ballad", "Wayland the Rabbit" to the latin grooved "Freak's Fret", Seals and Crofts venture into several different music genres that really work on this album.
"I'll Play For You", a top hit in '75 leads off the CD. My only complaint is that I detected a slight volume drop out at the 2:16 mark of the song and then again a rather bad channel pan and drop out at 2:35. I have a feeling that the original master was not used on this CD. (The quality is pretty good, but it won't blow your socks off.)
"Golden Rainbow" follows which is a beautiful, soft and laid-back song that has a blue mood feeling.
"Castles in the Sand" has the classic Seals and Crofts sound with the signature mandolin and great instrumentation from all the great studio musicians that S and C used in their hey day. This song is also on their GH CD.
"Blue Bonnet Nation" is a strong rock beat song with a nice horn section filling in. There are several changes in the rhythm in this song. The bad news is that I heard another sonic drop-out at the 2:05 mark.
"Ugly City" was the last song on side one on my old 33 and a third record. This is a lonely but beautiful ballad which builds and then leaves you on this note of wonder and hope. This is my favorite on the CD.
"Wayland the Rabbit" starts with a beautiful orchestration and goes into a long and desolate story about poor Wayland. It turns into an acoustic piece with light orchestration.
"Freak's Fret" is the most fun song and it is also an instrumental. Great latin edged beat featuring the acoustic guitar and mandolin.
"Truth is But a Woman" is another medium, laid-back song with great harmonies and a bit of a country flavor added in the guitar solo. This song ends on a classic sounding S and C major 7th chord.
Finally, "Fire and Vengeance" is a rock piece with the great wah wah guitar sound that seemed prevelent in the 70's. The horns are funky as Jimmy and Dash go out in a grooving glory.
"I'll Play for You" isn't my favorite Seals and Crofts album, but it is in my top 3. If you like Jimmy and Dash, try to pick this one up. Hey, even if you just like 70's mellow pop, this one is a real keeper!!

In Between Dreams Reviewit it was possible, i would have given this cd 6 stars... it's been on constant repeat in the background ever since i got this cd the day it came out (i pre-ordered it as soon as i heard word of a new jack johnson cd...gasp!)
i have liked jack for several years, ever since his debut album "brushfire fairytales." since then, he's also come out with "on and on," (making this his 3rd) and i honestly would never be able to choose my favorite. he's got a soothing, raspy voice and perfectly harmonizing guitar, and he has such a way with words: he doesn't just write about love (although his love songs will make your heart flutter!) but he also writes about worldly issues that get you thinking.
back to this new cd... wow. if you can't tell by now... i HIGHLY recommend it; it's one of those cds that's good the very first time you listen to it. highlights are "better together," (the tune is infectious and his voice is dreamy) "banana pancakes" (because it's such a cute concept and such a rainy summer day anthem) and "sitting waiting wishing" (which i got addicted to before the release of the cd; the video can be seen on his website, www.jackjohnsonmusic.com)
DEFINITELY buy it... you won't regret itIn Between Dreams Overview"In Between Dreams" is the multi-platinum selling smash from Jack Johnson. The album features classics like "Banana Pancakes", "Better Together" and "Good People".

Land of Enchantment ReviewThis CD by guitarist Michael Chapdelaine contains some of the most soulful and beautiful original music I've ever heard played on guitar. Ravishing tone and impeccable phrasing.Land of Enchantment OverviewI grew up playing rock music and surfing, and came to classical music at the late age of 18. My girlfriend was heading off to Florida State University to study art, and made it clear that if I wanted to stay with her, I would also become a FSU student. At FSU the only guitar offered then, was classical guitar. So I began a 20 year dedication to the discipline and martyrdom of classical music. I loved it and devoted all of my energy to it.In the mid-90s I found my self totally burned out. I could no longer summon the energy to practice, for the 4 gazillionth time, music written by someone else whose life and thoughts were not my own.. I was listening more and more to pop music and loving the sincerity of musicians who played their own feelings and experiences, rather than interpreting those of others. So I started composing. I shed my classical musician's need for complexity and unpredictability and just wrote what I had to say. The first piece was 2000 Miles from Beth, then Requiem for Geronimo, and before long, it became apparent that I was writing about my life in and impressions in New Mexico, where I live. Land of Enchantment is a musical diary of my attempt to learn my own musical identity (and some other things).mc

All Songs Considered from NPR ReviewMy name is Bob Boilen; I am director of NPR's All Things Considered. If you know the program, you may have found yourself curious about the little music snippets you've heard between news stories. I pick much of that music. After many years and many thousands of requests, there is this CD. It contains some of those great "buttons" that have been a signature of our daily news program.
This CD is filled with mostly unknown independent artists. There is a great piano tango, remarkable guitar music, a Norwegian fiddle tune, Hungarian Cymbalom music played with 8 "bowhammers", Spanish accordion, American jazz, a rock dirge and other music that is better heard than described.
I compiled this cd so I'm biased, but the musicians on this record are remarkable, and I hear a lot of music. Each song is a wonderful journey. I tried to put together a collection that on the one hand is eclectic but on the other is very accessable. The cd also benefits National Public Radio. Enjoy !

Classics ReviewFew artists engender such strong reactions as does Sarah Brightman. She is truly a love-it-or-hate-it proposition. This album is a perfect example of what divides people about her. The album is called "Classics" and is an album of classical material done Sarah Brightman-style. If you already like her voice and the production style of her music, it's probably for you. Sarah has never claimed to be a legit opera singer, and you'll probably find this CD in the vocals section of your store, not the classical section. So if you like legit classical singers or traditional opera recordings, of COURSE you're not going to like it. So put your axe away and buy something else. Sarah Brightman sings the classics her way; she does not try to imitate anyone else or give a traditional recital. A lot of the arguments made by reviewers here are old hat, from way back in the "Classical Barbra" days of Streisand's 70's classical album. They're TIRED, OLD arguments. Sarah's and Barbra's CD's were made for popular music fans who might enjoy hearing a few classical selections. If you're not part of that audience, what are you doing buying this anyway? So what do I think of it? I think it's pleasant and enjoyable coffee-table music. I much prefer Sarah's more diverse offerings, but I feel no need to tear it apart or swear my undying devotion to it. It stands up to repeated plays, and is an enjoyable listen for those who appreciate Sarah's recordings.Classics Overview

Peaceful: The Best Of Kenny Rankin ReviewThis is a superb mix of his best stuff with some notable exceptions. Kenny did a Little David release with Don Costa's sensational arrangements where Sunny Get's Blue and Here's That Rainy Day take on a life of their own. I have no idea why they were left out here, but this one's worth having on it's own merits. Collection of Favourite Christmas Carols ReviewI had never heard of Lewis Ross (after all, no huge media conglomerate is hawking his work), yet I bought this album when I heard a selection played at a music store. I have given copies to others, and even the finickiest person on my list seemed to genuinely enjoy these fresh renderings of timeless carols. Why? Ross understands that "less is more." He only uses steel string acoustic guitars. There is a slight country twang to the arrangements, but rest assured, fellow urbanites, it never reaches the point where you smell cows in the hay. The arrangements are intricate yet the overall effect is simplicity, an apt musical offering to a baby born in a wooden creche, the baby who grew to become a carpenter. The strumming of a wooden guitar is such a soothing antidote to the electronic buzz of holiday shopping. Because this collection is simple and heartfelt, it is one of those rare albums that never grows tiresome upon repeating. I'm not one given to exaggeration, but I think it's one of the greatest Christmas albums of all time.Collection of Favourite Christmas Carols OverviewUsing modern recording techniques (as of 1982), Mr. Ross has created from one to six parts for each of the pieces contained herein. Upon hearing this recording, the technical mastery of the guitar is noted and appreciated. However, what lingers the longest for the listener is the sweetness, sensitivity, and gentle good feeling of Mr. Ross's playing. Detailed notes on the origins of each of the Carols are included in the liner notes. The instruments used on this recording are a Martin 1934 000-18, a Mossman 1976 Great Plains, and a Mossman 1976 Flint Hills Custom. Revere Records is proud to offer these fine recordings in the hope that they become part of your Holiday background season after season.

James Taylor at Christmas ReviewJames Taylor's voice is in excellent form on his Christmas CD entitled James Taylor At Christmas. The CD boasts an excellent collage of traditional and somewhat formal holiday hymns interspersed with more playful, upbeat pop numbers. The ultimate effect is sheer delight to almost anyone's ears; and just one listen to this CD will prove it.
The CD starts off beautifully with a playful and heartfelt rendition of "Winter Wonderland." Chris Botti plays the trumpet on this song, too. This secular music is quickly followed by the more religious "Go Tell It On The Mountain."
Some other songs celebrating the joy of the holiday season include a pleasing and laid-back duet for James Taylor and Natalie Cole on "Baby, It's Cold Outside;" "Jingle Bells" onto which James Taylor puts his own stamp using a unique arrangement; "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)" written by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells. Toots Theilemans does a great job on harmonica for "The Christmas Song," too.
"In The Bleak Midwinter" is a much more religious song with a lush musical arrangement; James Taylor addresses the importance of loving Jesus as Jesus loves everyone. "Who Comes This Night" is based on the nativity scene in the manger and it is equally charming.
The CD ends with the thoughtful "Auld Lang Syne." The musical arrangement is flawless and this is the perfect song to end this CD.
The liner notes are beautiful. There are two great photos of James Taylor and the song credits are there, too.
In addition, there is the issue of the differences between the three "versions" of this CD. This CD is, for the most part, a re-issue of James Taylor's 2004 Christmas CD put out by Hallmark. There is the 2004 Hallmark version which is now difficult but not impossible to obtain. The 2004 CD has the song "Deck The Halls." On the other hand, this 2006 Christmas CD has the songs "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "River," a song about escaping from the holiday crunch-rush. There is, believe it or not, a third version of this album that does have "Deck The Halls" as a bonus track. I agree with the reviewer who writes that this third edition WOULD be the definitive James Taylor Christmas CD. If you can't find the version that includes "Deck The Halls," I suggest this CD as a solid alternative.
There may be three versions of this CD; but James Taylor surely put his heart and soul into every song on all three CDs. All technicalities aside, you can't go wrong with this CD. It still boasts excellent sound quality, great cover art all its own, a wide range of Christmastime songs and excellent contributions by Natalie Cole, Chris Botti and Toots Theilemans. John Pizzarelli and Dave Grusin play guitar and piano respectively on this album as well.
May you get this CD and enjoy as much as I did! SMILE
James Taylor at Christmas OverviewJames Taylor was the archetype for the gentle, inward-looking singer/songwriter movement of the early '70s. The easy lilt and timbre of Taylor's voice belies the complex emotional content of his songs, which aren't merely carefree folk-based odes, but instead look unflinchingly at a flawed man's journey through life. It's a tribute to his knack for making great pop records that he managed a long, decade-plus string of big hits.
