Land of Enchantment ReviewThis CD by guitarist Michael Chapdelaine contains some of the most soulful and beautiful original music I've ever heard played on guitar. Ravishing tone and impeccable phrasing.Land of Enchantment OverviewI grew up playing rock music and surfing, and came to classical music at the late age of 18. My girlfriend was heading off to Florida State University to study art, and made it clear that if I wanted to stay with her, I would also become a FSU student. At FSU the only guitar offered then, was classical guitar. So I began a 20 year dedication to the discipline and martyrdom of classical music. I loved it and devoted all of my energy to it.In the mid-90s I found my self totally burned out. I could no longer summon the energy to practice, for the 4 gazillionth time, music written by someone else whose life and thoughts were not my own.. I was listening more and more to pop music and loving the sincerity of musicians who played their own feelings and experiences, rather than interpreting those of others. So I started composing. I shed my classical musician's need for complexity and unpredictability and just wrote what I had to say. The first piece was 2000 Miles from Beth, then Requiem for Geronimo, and before long, it became apparent that I was writing about my life in and impressions in New Mexico, where I live. Land of Enchantment is a musical diary of my attempt to learn my own musical identity (and some other things).mc

Acoustic Heart ReviewThis is the first guitar album I have and I am glad it serves well as an introduction to how soothing and romantic guitar music can be.
Artie Traum started the CD project with Jeff Heiman in 1996 to put together "a compilation of the most romantic acoustic guitar music of the past ten years." They set the criteria for this album that "all the songs had to be romantic and deeply felt." All the selected fifteen pieces inside the CD show that they did a good compilation job as each delivers intimate sounds from a guitarist's heart, penetrating the audience's ears and touching their hearts.
For me, the piece I like most is Peppino D'Agostino's "Goodbye Robbie," which depicts well the feeling and concern about a good friend going away. Brian Hughes' "Sleeping Angles" and Peter White "By Candlelight" are very romantic, suitable to put them on when in the companion of a lover. But, believe me, you can have yourself touched and moved by other pieces in the CD.
Artie Traum writes in the liner notes, "I'm convinced that music has the capacity to heal, to transform and to communicate. I can't prove it, but I believe it this: as the waves of sound spread outward, they seep quietly through the world, like mist on a warm summer night." Actually Traum has proved it and this album is strong evidence.Acoustic Heart Overview

A Windham Hill Christmas ReviewSometimes, you find a cd that speaks to your heart in such a way, that you want everyone to know about it. "A Windham Hill Christmas" is such a cd. Through the years, Windham Hill has provided a peaceful alternative to most traditional-like Christmas music. This is no exception! With this latest Holiday recording (just released this October), various Windham Hill artists have compiled new instrumental arrangements of traditional carols, just for this cd. With a remarkable lineup of talented musicians...George Winston(solo piano), Liz Story(solo piano), Will Ackerman(baritone guitar), David Cullen(guitar), W.G. Snuffy Walden(guitar), Tracy Silverman(violin, electric 6-string violin & keyboards), Thea Suits(flute), Jim Brickman(piano), Steve Erquiaga(nylon-string guitar), Barbara Higbie(Celtic harp, violin, piano & synthesizer), Tim Story(piano & synthesizers), Paul Schwartz(piano), Nightnoise(guitar, piano, flute & violin), Alex de Grassi (solo guitar), Jeff Johnson (keyboards), Brian Dunning(whistles & accordian), John Fitzpatrick(violin) and Paul McCandless(oboe, English horn & keyboards)...how can you go wrong?!? If I had to describe the tone of this recording, it would be: Beautifully Serene! My favorite song is W.G. Snuffy Walden's arrangement of "The First Noel." It is very poignant and moves me tears. It is my favorite Christmas carol. The only flaw, per say, is an error in the sequence of songs. The cd cover list's song #5 as "Chirstmas Is Coming," by George Winston, and song #6 as "The First Noel," by W.G. Snuffy Walden. The actual sequence on the cd is just the opposite, with Walden's song being #5 and Winston's #6. Hey, believe me, it's no biggie. Just a slight mixup. It has no bearing on the quality of the music.
If you're a long time Windham Hill fan, chances are you already have this cd, or are getting ready to purchase it. If this is your first introduction to Windham Hill, you've come to the right place. This will be one of the most peaceful Christmas cd's you could ever own. Makes for wonderful background music while you're wrapping gifts, addressing Christmas cards, or hosting a Holiday get-together. It's especially nice to "cozy up with" by yourself, over a hot cuppa tea or cocoa :-) It sure would make for a nice gift, too. You may also want to check out "The Carol's of Christmas," another instrumental Holiday recording from The Windham Hill Collection, and another favorite of mine.
I predict "A Windham Hill Christmas" will be one of this Season's bigget sellers and become another Windham Hill
"classic." IT IS THAT BEAUTIFUL!! Do yourself a favor and buy it.
Merry Christmas!A Windham Hill Christmas Overview

Touch-Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar ReviewThis album has quickly become one of my favorite instrumental albums. Long a fan of the Windham-Hill label, I'm of the opinion that this compilation offers some of the best guitar music around. This CD is masterful and richly rewarding. It contains some of the most soothing instrumental music recorded, and as one other reviewer aptly put it, it's a great stress reducer. The cuts from the masters Ackerman, deGrassi and Hedges are wonderful as any WH fan over the years has come to appreciate them. My favorite selection is however, Snuffy Walden's "Who Lives Up There". In my opinion it is just the most beautifully written and performed piece of acoustic guitar music period. It is such a technically wonderful recording as well. This cut is worth the price of the CD alone. Another favorite is David Culen's "On the Way". I am not as familiar with his work but I plan to check out other Cullen offerings soon. There is not a misstep on this entire hour-long CD. And to think I almost hesitated buying it.Touch-Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar Overview
