Soul of the Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla ReviewYo Yo Ma has always been the frontrunner when it comes to experiencing new water in music. In this fantastic collection of Astor Piazzolla's best known tangos, Ma's breathtaking technique fuses w/ other instrumentalists, who happen to be Piazzolla's closest colleagues when he was alive. Instead of obtruding w/ his virtuous play on the cello, Ma's cello plays the role of a coordinator as he seams soul into the ensemble w/ a wide range of instruments. Yet always in concordance and an odd sense of balance, this recording exhilerates its listeners, and plus the video bonus that enables listeners to observe Ma's playing in the midst of tango dancers, even the dullest classical lovers would want to jump up and forsake the atmosphere of tradition. I highly recommended Fugota, with zesty hight notes of violin with Ma's ambiguous spiccato, this track is a seductive force that sweeps you off your feet. Astor Piazzolla Unmixed ReviewThe muse of Astor Piazzolla was so profound that fans may never get a chance to hear every note he recorded, but Unmixed is another step in the direction of completeness.
When I shop for CDs, I always look to see if there is any "new" Piazzolla on the shelf. The last couple times I haven't been disappointed.
Unmixed offers some cuts like "Vuelvo Al Sur" that are familiar to me, but the vast majority of the 14 pieces are arrangements I have not heard before. Several are performed by musicians who were members of APs many musical formations.
I like the entire CD. Since no song list is provided, I will list them. The titles will be largely familiar to AP connoisseurs, but the arrangements should be deliciously new to many of us.

Astor Piazzolla: Histoire du Tango ReviewMany people have asked me why I buy the music of Astor Piazzolla as performed by others when I already own so much by El Troesma himself. The answer is simple: I love the music of Piazzolla so much that I enjoy hearing any interpretations of it by virtuoso musicians almost as much as I enjoy listening to the originals. Since Piazzolla's death, his music has become regarded as almost neo-classical and in some circles nearly sacred. Starting with Gidon Kremer and Al DiMeola, there has since been a virtual stampede of musicians racing to put his/her own interpretations of Piazzolla before the listening public.
I bought Histoire du Tango solely because it was brought to my attention here on amazon, it seemed interesting and most importantly, it is Piazzolla. I had never heard of guitarist Maria Isabel Siewers or of violinist Rafael Gintoli before reading of this and I was quite prepared for possible disappointment. Suffice to say that delight was my reaction instead upon listening the first time.
This is truly an exquisite package. Though it took several listens before I became entirely comfortable with all the renditions here, I am now utterly convinced of its quality and merit. The duo covers the now obligatory 20 minute Histoire du Tango sequence first introduced by Piazzolla in the mid-80s. It also covers much that is rarely heard such as the melancholy Chiquilin de Bachin, the bittersweet Chau Paris, and the delicate Valsisimo. A special treat is Cinco Piezas, a rare delight which I have not heard covered before. Add in standards Escualo, Milonga En Re, and my personal Piazzolla favorite Soledad and you have the ingredients for one terrific album best listened to with no distractions.
The CD comes with a booklet in English, French, and German (but for some reason not Spanish) that contains short biographies of Siewers and Gintoli as well as commentary on Piazzolla and the tango. If you love the music of Astor Piazzolla as I do, then Histoire du Tango certainly deserves a place in your CD library.Astor Piazzolla: Histoire du Tango Overview

Anhelo: Argentinian Songs ReviewMusical wonderman José Cura conducts himself in this splendid collections of art songs from his native Argentina. Wrapping his big, rich, meltingly warm barti-tenor voice around each ballad of heartache and romantic longing, Cura beautifully conveys the emotion at the heart of the song; it's meaning comes clear even for us listeners who aren't up on our Spanish. Especially impressive are his top notes, which he deploys either forcefully or very soft and intimate, like a lover's whisper in one's ear. Superb support from Ernesto Bitetti and Eduardo Delgado on guitar and piano contribute to the aura of closeness surrounding this disc. Guitar Music of Argentina ReviewThe repertoire here ranges into more diverse styles of composition, and so presents more variety, than the recent John Williams album of music from Venezuela. All of the music here, however, is eminently engaging. Several of the composers obviously are highly aware of, and incorporate, a variety of idioms including jazz, indigenous music, and even a touch of rock and New Age--or so it seems to this listener--leading to some highly original moments. None of these twentieth century composers seems at all adverse to writing music with recognizeable (and at times even memorable) tunes--although this may make them quite unacceptable to certain "modernists." Maximo Pujol seems to have the most original voice, and shows both energy and wit in his compositions. The music by Saul comes closest to being bland, but it too has its ingenious moments. Victor Villandangos--who I had never heard of before--proves to be a fine guitarist who produces a generally full and pleasing tone and shows highly accomplished technique. A little more tonal variation on his part might have lent even more interest to the album, but it is hard to fault it in any way, especially at its bargain price. Even the sound is quite good. Along with the Villa-Lobos album by Norbert Kraft, this is one of the finest guitar albums issued by this label--and would do any full-price label proud as well.Guitar Music of Argentina Overview

Duos for Violin & Guitar ReviewSuperlatives are inadequate for describing this ineffable listening experience!
I first heard John Williams interpreting Paganini about thirty-five years ago and was excited to learn that he had teamed with Itzhak Perlman in this marvelous production. Strangely, I find myself as attracted to their collaboration with Mauro Giuliani as with Paganini.
Occasionally you find the rare classical piece, such as Corelli's La Folia, that can rapture you into a remote dimension of complete peace and unanimity. This entire album is of that genre. It would be insipid to attempt to explain the effects of this music in terms of tonality, virtuosity, etc.--sometimes when technique is perfect, the magic is missing. Call it magic, soul, genius, whatever--this is it.
Williams does some things with the Sonata in A Major that must be heard to be believed and Perlman's sweet song is the perfect compliment.
