Los Lonely Boys ReviewI can't recall when the last time was that I actually just let a new cd play all the way through without skipping a track on the first play due to boredom or the track's lack of power to hold my interest...Los Lonely Boys debut is that extremely rare album. From the awesome guitar work to the melodic sounds such as found in the track Heaven this is the kind of music I'm always open to and crave; this is the kind of real artistry that is set apart from the kiddie music heard on pop-junk radio and video stations !From previous reviews they have been compared to everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan (LLB even give him a thankful nod in the liner notes of the cd) to (as one reviewer said) Los Lobos. Hints of Santana? Maybe. What matters is that the music and lyrics are infectious from track one to the last track. Are there many musical influential styles? Absolutely. Everything from Texan blues, some country, to good ol' rock and roll from the days of Richie Valens and Elvis Presley. Plenty of Southwestern and some Californian (almost a la Dwight Yoakam) feel...The mixture of so many different influences is done to create such a unique and colorful panoramic style of their own that I do believe these boys stand out ! So what if these guys do become very famous. It won't mean that they are necessarily sell outs but that the commercial music industry has finally opened up it's eyes and ears to something that does not have a rap, hip hop beat or head banging trash-like influence on young cd buyers...Los Lonely Boys Overview

Shaman ReviewI've been a devoted Santana fan for most of his career. Heck, I remember buying his first album on vinyl shortly after it was originally released. I've probably bought more of his releases over the years than any other single artist I follow. I've seen him live many times, going all the way back to the 70's, and always treasured the experiences.
With all that said, I was thrilled to see him come back into public aclaim with "Supernatural". While concerned somewhat about the commercialism of that release, it was a fresh enough approach that I could enjoy it, and be happy for Carlos because of the renewed attention it brought him. And for the long-time Santana fan, there was still enough traditional Santana sound there to enjoy.
However, with "Shaman", I feel he goes overboard with the multi-artist/colaborator approach, and at the same time, doesn't infuse enough traditional Santana music in the mix. "Shaman" unfortunately displays the all-too-American approach to marketing: if they liked it the first time, let's do it bigger, louder, and longer next time.
Musically, there's little new here since "Supernatural". Some of the guest artists are really questionable, talent-wise. It seems they just wanted to stuff this CD as full as possible with diverse individuals. Listening to the CD, I was struck by how common most of Carols' guitar licks sounded - it seems I've heard them all before, many times. In itself that isn't a bad thing, but given he's in the support on most of these tracks, it becomes all the more noticable. Sonically, the release suffers on many tracks from the type of compression typically found on commercial pop releases. It's mixed to sound ok on the car radio or an average stereo. Audiophiles with revealing, high-quality systems will lament the lack of sonic potential.
Most disturbing was noticing in the liner notes a page dedicated to plugging "Carlos by Carlos Santana Licensed Products". Everything from women's shoes to sunglasses to inspirational cards. I know that given the complete derth of talent being released by the record companies these days, even a release this commercial from Carlos Santana stands heads above the average. But do they have to hang every commercial opportunity possible on his shoulders? Or is it his choice to allow all this? In any event, it screams "sell out!".
While this CD may garner some Grammy's (unlikey to be as successful as it's predecessor, but given the state of music releases these days, anything's possible), it finds a slightly unwelcome home in this fan's Santana collection. But artists have to grow in their unique ways, and I hope this eventually inspires new, and more fittingly "Santana" creations in the future.Shaman OverviewHas some surface marks but plays well. Buy with confidence--see my feedback. Thanks and enjoy this great CD!

Rush - Rush in Rio (2003) ReviewI originally gave this three stars but after listening to the entire concert I raised it to four. There are definitely some sound problems early on but they were pretty much resolved by about 25 minutes into this 2 hour and 50 minute concert. It was apparant there was no sound check and the sound engineers had to make adjustments as the band played on. They were successful however and for the most part the sound is fairly good. Rush puts on a tremendous show playing songs from throughout their career. I would recommend this for all Rush fans as well as anyone wanting to see a great band.

Last Splash ReviewOkay, I admit it...I found this record on tape about 5 months ago at a record shop in L.A. It was 99 cents! I hadn't listened to the songs on this album, with the exception of "Cannonball" and "Divine Hammer" which were furiously played on KROQ, since the record came out in 1993. Big, big mistake. The songs on this record take you by the hand and make you feel like you are falling in love with someone, EVERYONE!"Invisible Man"...oh my god...any song with Kim's voice that uses the words "sweet caress...." I mean, come on!It is not unlike an aural aphrodisiac! The opening of "No Aloha" makes me crazy every time I hear it. The guitar slithers and slides it 's way into your brain so that it's all you can think about the entire day. Rarely does an album make you feel PHYSICALLY better....but if ever there was a record this is it!I have had to rewind the tape over and over again to just to hear the beginning of the song and since I feel I have gotten my initial 99 cents worth of rock, I am springing for the CD today!Musical masturbation for the obsessive -compulsive -manic -depressive -low self esteem having -yet somehow "cuter" when they listen to this record kinda vibe! A Decade Of Steely Dan ReviewA truly comprehensive must-have Steely Dan collection would fill two or, more likely, three CDs. It's just impossible to cram all the vital cuts from the Dan's career onto one disc. But this one has the major American hits (excepting Grammy-winner "Cousin Dupree" from their later Two Against Nature album...though I can't really say it was a "hit"; really, the Academy was just guiltily giving the Dan their long long long long long overdue statuettes). It's well-sequenced and it sounds great.
Recommended for the casual Steely Dan fan, or for a friend who's only heard a few tunes in passing. There's enough here to further whet your appetite if you've got one. If you already know you like all these songs, go straight to the Citizen Steely Dan box set.
Collectors take note: There are two versions of the song "F.M." The one on this disc ends with a guitar solo, whereas the version on Steely Dan Gold and Citizen Steely Dan ends with a sax solo. Both are great.A Decade Of Steely Dan Overview

Brushfire Fairytales ReviewBeing a person whose favourite genres of music are Soul and Avant-garde Jazz, sometimes a break is needed from the ever-amazing art created by soul artists and the mad cacaphony of white noise created by avant-gardists. Increasingly, I am a fan of the acoustic guitar in it simplicity, especially if it is one of only a few instruments. Singer/Songwriter James Taylor springs to mind as an artist who I really enjoy listening to. He can make you calm after a storm just by playing his guitar and singing a song with his soothing voice.
An artist who I discovered while talking to some surfer friends was Jack Johnson. I decided to give him a go, and I found his album to be just the thing I was looking for. With his trio of guitar, bass and drums, this is a real acoustic album through and through. Brushfire Fairytales is like a cross between James Taylor's mellow singer/songwriter work and the slightly more upbeat work of Ben Harper (only slightly). Even Jack's singing style is like a fusion of the two.
The album is simply amazing based simply on its merits; simplicity. It is an feat in minimalism that this album can hold your attention without the commercial smoke and mirrors of more poppish acoustic rock. Also, Jack is an artist who has something to say in his sometimes cryptic lyrics. He only brings in a little help on Flake, using Ben Harper and Tommy Jordan. Inaudible Melodies, Posters, Sexy Plexi, Flake, Bubble Toes and The News are my favourites.
Some criticise this album for its lack of variation. Sure; he seems to stay in a fairly steady pace and sound, but I have heard jazz albums with less variation that are celebrated masterpieces (Kind of Blue for all it brilliance is pretty much easy going all the way through; John Coltrane's Ascension is madness all the way through [it is one song though]). The point is that he makes good music, writes his own songs, plays guitar and is appealing enough to make it to the Billboard Top 100 albums chart. In other words he is the best of both worlds; a popular artist who is actually talented.
I hope that he has considerable fame and success based on his talent and that he will continue to make excellent music like this for years to come.Brushfire Fairytales OverviewFans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell & Friends ReviewLet's face it: Sublime had charisma; they had energy; they had it all, but they weren't exactly the tightest band when it came to their live shows. Not that it mattered; Sublime's performances depended upon many things: energy; spontanaeity; and, ultimately, what their audiences gave them in return. But even then, those things didn't elevate the shows to godly heights. Sometimes... well, more than sometimes, Brad was simply off his nut, and all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't tighten things up as they should have been.
But it doesn't matter now, does it?
Listening to this cd is the musical equivalent of hanging out at a laid back party, having a beer and a b**g-hit, chillin' with your buddies and groovin' to some sweet music brought to you courtesy Bradley Nowell, one of the greater songwriters of the last twenty years. While it's incredibly rich on atmosphere, Brad doesn't exactly nail it in every song. A lot of the time it sounds as though he's already had more to drink or smoke than you have, but hey, again, it doesn't matter, because these last few records from Sublime will serve as the final documents of a superbly brilliant songwriter, the likes of which we won't see again for some time.
Nowell wrote from the heart and he sang his heart at every step. Few singers have shown themselves to be as emotionally direct or as honest as he had been. He wasn't overly preoccupied with finger pointing or rooting out hypocrites as lesser songwriters are apt to do. He was genuine, and he wasn't afraid to wear it on his sleeve, flaws and all.

Rock & Roll Over ReviewTHE BAND: Gene Simmons (Gene Klein), Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen), Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), Peter Criss (Peter Crisscoula).
THE DISC: Released 11/11/76. Recorded at the Record Plant, NYC. 10 songs clocking in at approximately 34 minutes. A classic album cover - featuring the 4 painted faces in a colorful circle. Originally released on Casablanca Records in 1975; this remastered edition was released in 1997 on Mercury's label. Much improved sound in my book (deeper bass guitars and crisper highs). Liner notes are slim - a 2 page fold out with song titles, writing credits and times. Underneath the disc on the inside cover, there's an informative 5 paragraph history of what the band was going through at the time.
COMMENTS: Hot off the heels of the platinum "Alive!" and "Destroyer" comes "Rock And Roll Over"... Kiss' 6th album in 3 short years. In my opinion, this is the band's first studio album with absolutely no filler. Song writing credits include 5 from Paul, 4 from Gene, and 1 from Peter. The only thing missing is a song penned from Ace. There's no weird out-of-character tracks like "Great Expectations" (from "Destroyer") or the forthcoming "Then She Kissed Me" throwback (from soon to be released "Love Gun"). This is back to basics rock and roll. Great guitar solo's from Ace (see "Calling Dr. Love" and "I Want You"). Better than average drumming from Peter (not to mention a better than average Peter song in "Baby Driver"). High quality songwriting from Paul. And the typical comic relief and sleaze of scoring babes from Gene. This album, like so many of their releases in the 1970's was extremely short. The longest songs are "Calling Dr. Love" and "Love 'Em And Leave' Em" - both at 3:47 minutes each. Two songs ("Take Me" and "See You In Your Dreams") are under the 3-minute mark. Paul Stanley's "Hard Luck Woman" (sung by Peter) was originally written and to be given to Rod Stewart... it reached #11 on the billboard charts... giving KISS their biggest hit since Peter's ballad "Beth". Though not a big fan of Garth Brooks, the country singer did a good job on his remake of "Hard Luck Woman" on "Kiss My Ass - Classic Kiss Regrooved" (1994). "Rock And Roll Over" features 2 classic not-hit KISS tunes - "Take Me" and Mr. Speed". Kiss has a billion compilations out there, and these 2 songs have only made a few of them. Not to mention perhaps their finest album closer ever, "Makin' Love". Solid album. One of the early classic discs from KISS (4.5 stars).
Rock & Roll Over OverviewThe band reunited with producer Eddie Kramer for this raucous rocker from late 1976 (another #11 LP). The hits Hard Luck Woman and Calling Dr. Love join killer cuts like I Want You; Makin' Love , and Mr. Speed .

Division ReviewI have written a couple of reviews for other albums on here, and I am amazed at the incredible brililance and quality of some (Alter Bridge- Blackbird; Hurt- VOl. II), but not all, of the rock released over the past 12 months out. Division from 10 years is quite simply, astounding.
I am not even quite sure how to articulate how good Division is, other than to say that it is so complex, layered, emotional, and brilliant, that it would just make me downright sick to my stomach if this album does not become an essential rock album for every single person in America who calles themselves a hard rock fan. I don't know what is happening to rock in America- it seems like albums such as Division should sell 20 million copies given it's quality, but I don't know. I certainly hope it provides big success for the band.
For anyone remotely considering purchasing this album, By all means, please purchase it with all deliberate speed, and listen to it a few times. let it sink in. You will find that songs you initially thought were brilliant, stay that way, and get better, and other songs on the album that you might not have thought were brilliant initially, will envelop you with the layers, textures, and soaring vocals, and will stay with you all day and night. It is exactly what happened to me. Into my third listen, I just opened my eyes, and said, "This is brilliant." I honestly believe that you will be grateful that you got it. I have said this before about some other albums, major marketing muscle needs to be put behind this album- the label needs to make an investment here. People need to be exposed to this band.
Thank you all for reading, and i hope you enjoy Division as much as I did.Division Overview10 Years is an US alternative metal band, formed in Knoxville, Tennessee in 2000. Division is 10 Years's fourth studio album and second major label release. The first single is "Beautiful". There's no shortage of good, timeless material on Division. "Actions and Motives" is a fist-pumping rocker interwoven with atmospheric guitar tendrils, the first single "Beautiful" is brooding and evocative, suffused with ringing, distorted guitars and melancholy harmonies and "Dying Youth" starts with a poignant classical guitar progression and yearning vocals before weeping strings and a stirring chorus take the track over the peak and somewhere between euphoria and despair. Then there's "Alabama," a psychedelic-tinged song flavored with sitar, Indian percussion and acoustic guitar.

Swing Kids: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewFirst off let me commend the original score by James Horner, it goes along very well with the movie and stands on its own outside.
Second, I'll explain why the swing recordings on this CD are a must have even though they've been recorded before. I've read one review saying that you can get these songs on other original artists' CDs for better quality. It's not true. The sound quality is alright, nothing special, but it's the ARRANGEMENT that the film makers put in these songs that makes them unique. My favorite is "Shout And Feel It", which was originally recorded by Count Basie with all-big-band style. On Swing Kids, however, they replaced the brass section with Django-Reinhart-style guitar solo, which I think is just priceless! My only drag on this CD is the shortenning version of Benny Goodman's originally 8-minute-long hit "Sing Sing Sing," but one good thing about it is there's less of the annoying Harry-James-style trumpet interlude. "Bei Mir Bis Schon" is another highlight. Originated with names like Benny Goodman and the Andrews Sisters, whose flowery singing was too much of a distraction for audiences to appreciate the beautiful tune of the song. This version with Janis Seigel is much better, since they simplified the singing and put more emphasis on the instruments, giving it a smooth flow. However, the ULTIMATE STROKE OF GENIUS is combining Benny Goodman's "Life Goes To A Party" with Count Basie's "Jumping At The Woodside." Those songs on their original recordings were kind of bland, but mixing them together with a few instrumental rearrangements created a whole new exciting piece.
Over all, Swing Kids would be a great addition in anyone's swing collection, but you have to be a real avid fan of swing to fully appreciate this CD.Swing Kids: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

The Dirty Boogie ReviewI've been a fan of Brian Setzer since his days with the stray cats, and I'm still a fan. This Cd is definitely a rocker and a swinger, his style stayed pretty much the same, I'll define it as orchestrated rockabilly. There's some good rockabilly stuff here like "This Cat's On A Hot Tin Roof", "The Dirty Boogie", "This Old House", his own remake of "Rock This Town", and "Switchblade 327". The boogie and jump tunes are just as great, he does an excellent job with Louis Prima's "Jump Jive An' Wail", a really great duet with Gwen Stefani from the group No Doubt called "You're The Boss", and his own treatment to the Lieber & Stoller tune "Nosey Joe", a nice twangy feel to the Skyliners hit "Since I Don't Have You", a credible version of Bobby Darin's "As Long As I'm Singin'", and a cool rendition of the instrumental hit "Sleepwalk". If you like rockabilly and some jump boogie give this disc a listen to.The Dirty Boogie OverviewJapanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. 2009.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid ReviewIn 1994, the alternative movement had been in full swing for about 2 years ever since Nirvana released their breakthrough album NEVERMIND that changed the course of pop music forever. That same year (1994), Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain would be found dead and alternative would no longer be the innovative genre it was when they came along. With grunge on the verge of becoming a parody of itself, slowly mainstream rock was on its way back to being a legitimate style, and a band like Collective Soul was to lead the way. Of course, at the time their debut album HINTS, ALLEGATIONS & THINGS LEFT UNSAID was being recorded, there wasn't a band so to speak, just Ed Roland performing solo on a demo tape. His record company loved it enough so that Roland reformed the recently-disbanded group to be Collective Soul again. It was a good move because Ed Roland may have been the man behind Collective Soul, but he couldn't have done it all alone (What to do when he begins to tour? He can't play all the instruments then, can he?). The first single, "Shine" blasted out of many a radio during the summer of 1994, and not only did it become a hit on alternative radio (despite the fact that Collective Soul has never referred to themselves as a grunge band), but became a considerable hit on top 40 radio as well, even being certified gold. The guitars may have been loud and bombastic, but the lyrics were something grunge could never have mastered: an upbeat song of spiritual searching with a positive message. "Shine" could have also worked as a gospel tune, and would be remade as such by Dolly Parton on her LITTLE SPARROW album. With songs like this, Ed Roland shows he may be a less-depressing role model for the music that would eventually metamorphasize into modern rock. "Sister Don't Cry", "Heaven's Already Here" and "Reach" are much more encouraging and upbeat than any of the many "hate myself and want to die" manifestos that all the other grunge acts were creating. There are also songs that have been made just to play loud and hard, like "Love Lifted Me", "Wasting Time", "Goodnight, Good Guy" and the punk-inspired "Scream". To further show Collective Soul's multi-faceted personality, "In A Moment", "Burning Bridges" and "All" have more in common with Badfinger than Bad Company, thanks to their luscious vocal harmonies. With alternative and grunge's days numbered in the spring of 1994, pioneers like Pearl Jam and Nirvana (or its offshoot, the Foo Fighters) would need to think fast if they wanted to stay in the game. Both of those bands have done that by evoking the past they so much wanted to avoid when they made touchstones like NEVERMIND and TEN. As a result, modern rock bands have become less distinctive than usual. But while Collective Soul may have been considered hacks at the time they arrived, and to some extent still are today, HINTS, ALLEGATIONS & THINGS LEFT UNSAID sort of foreshadowed grunge's eventual fall in favor (which started with Kurt Cobain's suicide) with its aim to merge elements of older genres with more modern techniques. And with that, they indicated that would be the ultimate remedy for a modern rock band wishing to stay afloat after the trend they came in on ran out of steam.Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid Overview

Very Best of ReviewThis straight reissue of the 1982 collection has no surprise choices in its linep. All ten tracks were top 10 R & B hits. Be it the oh-so funky "Tell Me Something Good" and "You Got The Love" or dance floor fillers like "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)" and "Once You Get Started," touching tales such as "Hollywood" and "Please Pardon Me" or the steamy ballads "Stay" and "Sweet Thing," all of the enclosed tracks are great.
My only complaint is that this collection did not offer more tracks when it was reissued on CD - in particular the lush "Sharing The Love" (their only other top ten hit). With first rate musicianship and a stellar lead vocalist in Chaka Khan, this set is long enough however to show why Rufus was one of the top bands of the '70s. Also, that they were far more than just Khan's launching pad.Very Best of Overview

Alannah Myles ReviewI sure miss the mature, rockin' talented women of the 70's, 80's to late 80's ( Heart and Pat Benatar specifically). These gals could belt out with the vocals and their wild feminine charms without ever becoming sugar coated caricatures of pop music...
Then,Myles shows up to prove that they still existed towards the closing of the 80's.After Alannah's explosive chart topping album from '89 it seemed she was destined for more success. After the Black Velvet hit, she released a couple of lesser well known and harshly critiqued albums...
Alannah Myles debut, containing Black Velvet ,showcased her as a sexy rock n' roll siren with sultry throaty vocals without coming across as dry sandpaper but rather smooth silk. There were no filler tracks or songs penned at the last minute. Each song, while collectively they worked together, had it's own unique flavor...Alannah Myles Overview

Duran Duran (The Wedding Album) ReviewDuran Duran bombed quietly with 1990's "Liberty" and then disappeared for three years, leading many to think their careers ended with the Eighties. So everyone was shocked when in 1993 they stormed back to the top of the pop charts. Their comeback success was deserved: "The Wedding Album" is Duran Duran's most colourful, dynamic and diverse offering, and ranks with 1982's "Rio" as one of their best.
I can't quite describe my feelings upon hearing the dreamy, soaring ballad "Ordinary World" for the first time in early 1993. It was like an old friend had returned after an absence of many years. Over ten years later, this first single from "The Wedding Album" retains all its anthemic power.
And then a funny thing happened: the second single, "Come Undone," was just as good! For the first time in nearly ten years, Duran Duran had two hit singles from the same album. The comeback was complete.
Fortunately "The Wedding Album" is more than just a "singles" album. As they did with "Notorious" (1986) and "Big Thing" (1988), Duran Duran continues to break new musical ground. Standout tracks include the Latin-tinged Milton Nascimento collaboration, "Breath After Breath," the Prince-style funk of "U.M.F.," and the hip-hop/ambient fusion of "Come Undone" and "Love Voodoo." More than just experiments, these songs are thoughtful compositions that successfully synthesize diverse genres with Duran's inimitable melodic sensibilities.
A minor complaint about "The Wedding Album" is that the weakest tracks, "Drowning Man" and "Shotgun," appear early on, disrupting the record's consistency. But the album quickly recovers with "Come Undone" and never looks back. "The Wedding Album" ends with a bang: the incendiary "Sin of the City," an epic tune about the tragic Happyland dance club fire, is an angry and passionate statement about urban exploitation. It's a scathing social comment that dispels the notion of Duran Duran as self-absorbed pretty boys.
More than merely a commercial comeback, "The Wedding Album" reaffirms Duran Duran's place among the premier pop bands of their generation. The wait was worth it.Duran Duran (The Wedding Album) OverviewDURAN DURAN Duran Duran (1993 UK 13-track CD album including aclassic cover of the Velvet Underground single Femme Fataletogether with the singles Come Undone and Ordinary World picturesleeve CDDDB34)

Collection ReviewI am pretty new to Christian music. I had never heard of Amy Grant until "Heart in Motion". I've never listened to Christian music. 6 months ago, I decided to buy one of her earlier albums. After listening to it ("Age to Age"), I decided to buy another...and another...and another.... You get the picture. I couldn't get enough of this wonderful artist! Then I bought the collection because I still hadn't purchased her entire discography yet but was anxious to hear other songs that I hadn't heard yet. This collection is wonderful! It's a nice mixture of upbeat/rock songs and slow touching ballads. Amy's whole style is so accessible to all listeners. I was pleasingly surprised at the end with the "Ageless Medley" where she re-records her hits and incorprates them all in one spectacular song! Amazing album!Collection Overview

Crossfade ReviewThis is a great band. Although I live in their home town of Columbia and I did hear about them back in their Sugardaddy Superstar days, I only actually heard about this CD through Taxi - which is the independant A&R company that got them signed. And I have to say, they deserve every bit of the success that will surely come their way. They are absolutely terrific songwriters with catchy hooks, great musicianship, and smooth dead-on vocals that really come through on this CD. I have read the other reviews that say this band lacks originality and, I have to say that I don't totally disagree on Tracks 5-10. But it doesn't really bother me because it seems to me that the band is still trying to find themselves, and they certainly have a lot of talent to work with. So let them be a little unoriginal at first, as long as they progress as they grow. That said, tracks 1-4 really define this band. These are, by far, the strongest tracks on the CD featuring an original songwriting style that, if drawn upon for future albums, should give them the long musical careers that they deserve. On tracks 5-10, there are obvious influences from other bands - most notably, in my opinion, P.O.D. and Linkin Park. Again, I think this is OK for their first release because the songs are just that good. My complaint is that they don't pull off the styles as well as the original bands that defined them. For example, on a few tracks, they try to mix a bit of rap rock into the choruses - a task better left to Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit. This vocalist just doesn't have the right style for it. But, all of that aside, the talent and songwriting ability of this band shines through any "start-up" problems that they may have. And if they continue to draw upon the totally original and self-defining style that they establish on tracks 1-4, their future looks very bright indeed. So, overall, for the songs, I would give it 5 stars.
So why the 4 star rating? Well, it has everything to do with the production. The CD was recorded in their basement studio and the record label picked it up, re-engineered it, and released it. And although they obviously did a good job on the original basement recording, and the mixing engineers up in Canada did an even better job on the re-engineering, I think this band deserves better. The album features some VERY powerful songs. And powerful songs deserve a powerful recording. Because it was recorded in a home studio, the drums sound flat and the mix sounds a bit lacking. Don't get me wrong, everyone did a great job and the recording is immensely listenable. But I just think that the record company could have sprung for the few extra bucks and put these guys into a real studio. With songs like these, it would pay them back twenty-fold. I know the recording industry isn't in the best shape right now, but they should still be willing to invest in their talent. And I think they did these guys an injustice by not giving them the best recording they could possibly deliver.
My second problem has to do with the length of the CD. With 10 songs at just over 3 minutes a piece, the entire album clocks in at just over 34 minutes. That's fine for a demo CD, but not for a major label release. With the rise of music downloads, consumers expect to pay NO MORE than $0.99 per song. At a list price of $12.98, this album just doesn't add up financially - especially given the fact that the recording was done in a basement. Again, this is not the band's fault. It's just that consumers deserve better and, by not delivering it to us, the label is putting the band at a disadvantage.
So, overall, this is a great band with a great album that should have been longer and better produced. But the future looks bright as long as the record label gives them the proper support that they deserve. Let's hope for more next time...Crossfade Overview

Meddle ReviewDavid Gilmour himself once remarked that Meddle was Pink Floyd's first true album. Though this is their fifth post-Barrett effort, it is musically light-years ahead of any of its predecessors. Of course there are many wonderful, brilliant moments on those early records, but it is clear in those recordings that the band was anxiously searching. Meddle is Pink Floyd finding itself. It is far more focused, far more melodic, and far more cohesive then anything before it. No longer searching, Pink Floyd had finally arrived.
The album kicks into gear with the savage instrumental One Of These Days. Howling wind sets the tone as a pulsing doubled bass line (complete with tape echo) pumps along. Intensity grows with organ stabs, reversed cymbal rolls, and fierce slide guitar. After a creepy bass interlude, Nick Mason makes his (distorted) vocal debut with "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces!!" and slams the song into overdrive. Pounding drums and stinging slide guitar dominate for the next two minutes until nothing but wind remains. It is here that (appropriately enough) the gorgeous ballad, A Pillow Of Winds picks up. Made up of acoustic guitars and sparse bass, this is a beautiful floating piece that takes advantage of Gilmour's tranquil vocals. This gentle mood is held through Fearless, a relaxed mid-tempo summer breeze of a song, again driven by Dave's voice. San Tropez and Seamus show off the Floyd's eclecticism as well as humor. The former invokes a bouncy cocktail lounge jazz feel, while the latter stars Steve Marriot's dog Seamus who "sings" along with Gilmour on some acoustic blues.
And then there's Echoes. 31 years later, this epic sound journey stands as one of the band's greatest achievements. Every element that would become synonymous with Pink Floyd was crystallized in this one phenomenal song. Swirling, bubbling keyboards and liquid guitar lines mix with floating vocal harmonies and a dynamic rhythm section to move the music through several dramatic and powerful moods. Truly the band's musicianship had taken a monstrous quantum leap forward from Atom Heart Mother. Of exceptional note is David Gilmour who, after years of struggling, managed to firmly define his role in Pink Floyd with complete confidence. That he asserts his unmatched talents on this track is an understatement. Fluid guitar lines; silky bends; gorgeous vibrato; subtle slide; tremolo bar antics; funky rhythms; and soaring leads abound. A significant part of his style - playing sounds and textures as well as notes - is also well represented. In the intro, he carresses the strings with a steel slide (much like an E-bow) to produce a shimmering string section-like feel. During the middle section, when darkness falls, his echo-laden feedback cries can be heard over ominous keyboards, swirling wind, and the distant screech of crows. Then, as daybreak comes in the form of a musical buildup to the final verses, the track ends with a multi-layered guitar part that sounds almost like a ghostly choir rising higher and higher. All this over the single echoing piano note that started the piece off. Fantastic.
Meddle is often dismissed as a "transitional" album due to the massive success of it's follow-up, Dark Side Of The Moon. Though it's not quite as perfectly structured as Dark Side, it can easily stand shoulder-to-shoulder with it (and any of the golden era Floyd albums). I would say that if you've digested Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall, move on to Meddle next. This is an incredible album and should not at all be overlooked.Meddle OverviewJapanese remastered reissue of 1971 album packaged in alimited edition miniature gatefold LP sleeve.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Wander This World ReviewYouth has its own special grace. This is one of the best CD's of 2000 or any year! It's safe to say Jonny Lang is a prodigy, although some credit has to go to producer David Z. There's not a bad track here, but "I Am," (co-written by Prince, David Z, and Levi Seacer, Jr.) "Angel of Mercy," and "Wander This World" are three astonishing standouts. Better still is "Right Back," written by Jerry Lynn Williams and Danny Kortchmar. Even better than that is "Before You Hit the Ground," written by Kevin Bowe and Mr. Lang. And best of all is the brilliant (Bowe/Lang) "Breakin Me," already a radio hit. Discussing blues influences is like peeling back layers of an onion to find a center, but I definitely hear echos of the great Paul Butterfield Blues Band, especially in the drumming and piano arrangements. What pushes Lang ahead of other great guitarists such as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton is his singing voice, reminiscent of Joe Cocker's style. Do we do the boy harm raving about his work at such a young age? If he can withstand the ravages of fame, there's not much telling what this kid can come up with. Get this--it's a masterpiece.Wander This World OverviewJapanese edition of the acclaimed young guitarist's 1998 &second album with two unmarked bonus tracks added, 'StopPushin' On Me' & 'If This Is Love'. 14 tracks total. Dream Theater - Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour Live with the Octavarium Orchestra (2006) ReviewAs the previous reviewers have stated, this particular show was absolutely amazing! As a fan of the band since 1989 and having seen 37 DT shows to date, this show tops them all and I am proud to say that I was there!
However, unlike those previous reviewers, I've actually managed to get a copy of this DVD ahead of time, and after watching it, I can say for certain that this DVD *is* DT's best yet! Mike Portnoy pulls out all the stops in making sure that this DVD tops everything else they've done thus far. The picture quality is gorgeous - better than Live at Budokan, if that can be believed. I was told by someone who worked on the project that extra attention was put in the details to ensure that every single frame was perfect, and it shows! The sound itself is also a thing of beauty - even the stereo mix is not the traditional AC3 encoding, but rather the superior PCM encoding. The actual mix is very well done by Michael Brauer and is balanced nicely, allowing each of the musicians to shine throughout. It is quite evident that every bit of space on the DVD was used.
I won't go on about the actual songs themselves, as you can read many reviews of the actual show to learn about them. However, I would like to point out that while the song selection is not to everyone's taste (as is evident from the other reviews), Mike Portnoy continues to give the fans the most bang for their buck by not having the same songs on every DVD like many other bands do - the only "overlapping" songs on this DVD compared to their previous DVDs are some parts of the song Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (as found on Live at Budokan), The Spirit Carries On and Metropolis pt. 1 (found on Scenes From New York) and Under a Glass Moon (on Live in Tokyo).
One other thing to add is that seeing the orchestra perform with the band is absolutely stunning - something to behold and the final song (Metropolis pt. 1) proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt.
The second DVD showcases 3 bonus tracks (Another Day, The Great Debate and Honor Thy Father) which are taken from older shows; they are nice to have to round out the collection, but it should be noted that the picture and sound quality are not to the same standards as on the first DVD. Still their inclusion is worth having seeing as live performances of these songs have previously been unavailable on DVD. Also on the second DVD is the animation that was played during the song Octavarium, so if you happened to miss watching it during the show you were at, now you'll have the chance to watch it in full.
The best part of the second DVD has to be the documentary showing the history of the band from the days of being at Berklee School of Music up to the present day. Definitely a good look into DT's history, and a great companion to the book that Rich Wilson is writing on DT (www.dreamtheaterbook.com). My only real complaint on the documentary is that it isn't long enough, but surely Rich's book will fill in many of the stories and details missing in the documentary.
All in all, this release is definitely a labor love for the fans. No DT fan's collection will be complete without it. Also, both the show itself and the documentary serve as a great way to introduce DT to those who are just beginning to learn about them. I give this DVD the highest recommendation I possibly can! Stop reading these reviews and buy this thing - you won't regret it!!!Dream Theater - Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour Live with the Octavarium Orchestra (2006) OverviewThis DVD features the grand finale concert of the "20th Anniversary Tour", recorded live at Radio City Music Hall on April 1, 2006.
