Ace Frehley ReviewI absolutely thought KISS was one of the best things in my life when I was 9 or 10 years old. I didn't think a thing about the sexual innuendoes, the drugs, the whatevers, I just loved KISS. Now that I'm an adult, some of those sexual innuendoes are just hysterical, make you want to cringe thinking you liked it at one time, and make it an embarassment to say you liked KISS.
Ace Frehley in my mind was always exempt from this. By far, Ace was always my favourite member of KISS, his lead guitar playing is vastly underrated,(his leads had hooks, they were part of the song like the melody), and he didn't dive the depths of immature sexual innuendo as much as grown men such as Gene or Paul. Honestly, Gene and Paul wrote kiddie stuff, embarassing for a 35 year old to be writing honestly, and strictly derived to accomodate a certain market. Young, 16 year old boys who can't drink, smoke or get girls yet. Ace didn't write songs like that, apart from Cold Gin on the first KISS album.
This album stands well to time. The songs do not sound dated, the lyrics are not stupid or banal or anything indicating a 70's attitude, and it just rocks. All the way through. There is not a weak track on it, and even though criticism is there on Wiped Out from other fans, I love that song for its time changes (Anton Fig's drumming on this song is the album's standout) and it is just a great song period. Its always been one of my top 3 songs on the album. Ace just really showed how talented he was. I've never read Simmons autobiography, and I have no interest in it, but Ace always lived up to his potential even if he was chemically enhanced sometimes. Its why Ace's solo album was the best received by a wider fan base than the KISS Army, the critics and musicians alike, it was THAT good an album. It has an element of STREET about it, slightly punk in attitude. This album is actually full of attitude, and it just says New York all over it.
Ace had pop sensibilities as well. 'What's On Your Mind' borderlines between hard rock and pop. No, Ace is not the greatest singer, but he has that Jimi Hendrix approach where in the end you can't hear anyone else singing the songs as well but Ace Frehley.
It has become a cliche this album. I imagine people who don't even own it now say Frehley's album was the best when giving their mock history of KISS. The fact of the matter was, it is and still is. You can play the whole thing through and not smirk because the lyrics are hokey or childish, the guitar solos are polished and gutsy at the same time, the drummer was great, the songs and arrangements were class, the production was just near perfect but just enough punk to have credibility. If not for Frehley, the next KISS album (Dynasty) would have been horrible and so dated in sound and sentiment that they might not have survived to GET to the 80's. Some say Simmons and Stanley are KISS, including themselves, but what a shame. Ace Frehley consistently came up with songs that even KISS fans say are the best songs in the KISS repertoire, Cold Gin, Parasite, Shock Me, Rocket Ride, Hard Times. The guy just had tons of talent and should have gotten out of KISS as soon as he released this album.
THAT would have been a success story. Maybe Simmons is right and Frehley never lived up to his potential. Maybe its because he had Simmons telling him he never would, you just never know.
Do you mean to tell me that Ace Frehley all messed up on booze and drugs working at half the potential, STILL came up with a better KISS album than KISS ever achieved? Even with Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, Hotter Than Hell, Ace Frehley's solo album was so together that no one could diss it. There's no Goin Blind's, no Great Expectations, no Love Theme From KISS, that just makes you say was this person serious when they wrote this? They are joking right??? Frehley's album you can listen to as a kid, and listen to as an adult and say, I knew I had good taste.Ace Frehley Overview

Rock & Roll Over ReviewTHE BAND: Gene Simmons (Gene Klein), Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen), Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), Peter Criss (Peter Crisscoula).
THE DISC: Released 11/11/76. Recorded at the Record Plant, NYC. 10 songs clocking in at approximately 34 minutes. A classic album cover - featuring the 4 painted faces in a colorful circle. Originally released on Casablanca Records in 1975; this remastered edition was released in 1997 on Mercury's label. Much improved sound in my book (deeper bass guitars and crisper highs). Liner notes are slim - a 2 page fold out with song titles, writing credits and times. Underneath the disc on the inside cover, there's an informative 5 paragraph history of what the band was going through at the time.
COMMENTS: Hot off the heels of the platinum "Alive!" and "Destroyer" comes "Rock And Roll Over"... Kiss' 6th album in 3 short years. In my opinion, this is the band's first studio album with absolutely no filler. Song writing credits include 5 from Paul, 4 from Gene, and 1 from Peter. The only thing missing is a song penned from Ace. There's no weird out-of-character tracks like "Great Expectations" (from "Destroyer") or the forthcoming "Then She Kissed Me" throwback (from soon to be released "Love Gun"). This is back to basics rock and roll. Great guitar solo's from Ace (see "Calling Dr. Love" and "I Want You"). Better than average drumming from Peter (not to mention a better than average Peter song in "Baby Driver"). High quality songwriting from Paul. And the typical comic relief and sleaze of scoring babes from Gene. This album, like so many of their releases in the 1970's was extremely short. The longest songs are "Calling Dr. Love" and "Love 'Em And Leave' Em" - both at 3:47 minutes each. Two songs ("Take Me" and "See You In Your Dreams") are under the 3-minute mark. Paul Stanley's "Hard Luck Woman" (sung by Peter) was originally written and to be given to Rod Stewart... it reached #11 on the billboard charts... giving KISS their biggest hit since Peter's ballad "Beth". Though not a big fan of Garth Brooks, the country singer did a good job on his remake of "Hard Luck Woman" on "Kiss My Ass - Classic Kiss Regrooved" (1994). "Rock And Roll Over" features 2 classic not-hit KISS tunes - "Take Me" and Mr. Speed". Kiss has a billion compilations out there, and these 2 songs have only made a few of them. Not to mention perhaps their finest album closer ever, "Makin' Love". Solid album. One of the early classic discs from KISS (4.5 stars).
Rock & Roll Over OverviewThe band reunited with producer Eddie Kramer for this raucous rocker from late 1976 (another #11 LP). The hits Hard Luck Woman and Calling Dr. Love join killer cuts like I Want You; Makin' Love , and Mr. Speed .

Kiss ReviewWell, the answer is simple: Because they get along pretty well selling their back catalogue over and over again. In my oppinion this Box may be interesting for only two groups of people. The die-hard fans that after 30 years still buy anything that bears the name KISS on it and the presumably rather small group of fans that still don't own anything of KISS.
Although for the second group it'd still be better to invest in some of the original albums or maybe the "KISS Gold" Box which features two CDs spanning the 70s era and a DVD re-release of the 1987 "Exposed" Video. This way they'd at least be paying less.
After all it's rather sad to see how this band that still claims to be the "hottest band in the world" has become so lame that in the last FIFTEEN YEARS they have released only two and a half albums with entirely new material: "Revenge", "Psycho Circus" and the unfinished semi-official "Carnival of Souls".
That being said one can only hope that Simmons and Stanley decide to enter a studio with their current employees Thayer and Singer to finally record a fresh studio album instead of releasing one puffed-up Greatest Hits hype after the other. (How many "different" Greatest Hits Compilations are available actually? Seven? Eight? Nine? Think for yourself!)
The classic songs still rock, that's for sure - but there's no need to buy them ONCE MORE. The additional stuff, demos, the booklet etc surely aren't worth the money. It's sometimes helpful to keep in mind that in most of the cases there's a reason why something remained unreleased in the first place..
Therefore - For all the boredom: One star.Kiss OverviewWhat band stands right behind the Beatles in the number of gold records earned? That's right: it's KISS. And if that's not evidence enough, the 94 tracks on this boxed set firmly establish that, behind all the face paint, dry ice smoke and confetti showers, they were a great rock 'n' roll band. Along with classics like Shout It Out Loud; Detroit Rock City; Rock and Roll All Nite; Cold Gin; Beth; Love Gun , and Black Diamond are a full 30 previously unreleased band and solo demos (of such faves as Deuce and Strutter ), outtakes and live recordings, plus a 120-page booklet with track-by-track commentary by KISS members, rare photos and biographical essay. Six hours of digitally remastered music enough to feed the KISS army!

Alive Box Set ReviewI was hesitant to purchase this box set since I already own the first three "Alive" albums on cd (not to mention the first 2 on vinyl). I decided to make the purchase based on the inclusion of the Millennium Concert, the great price and having all the albums in the same place. I do not believe "Alive III" was ever remastered, so the sound improvement here is very noticeable. What pleasantly surprised me was the better sound on "Alive I & II". I did a side by side with "Alive! Box Set" cds and the 2 disc remastered sets of "Alive I & II". I found these new recordings to sound clearer, brighter, louder (when played at the same volume level), and to have more concert hall ambiance and overall punch when compared to the 2 disc "remastered" versions. The differences I heard immediately were Criss's drums & Gene's bass on the "Alive!" album giving my car subwoofer a much better workout. While the sound improvement on these first two "Alive!" albums might seem like a slight "tweak" to some, the ears of dedicated KISS fans will really appreciate the improvement.
So, for the music fan who does not own any Kiss albums, shame on you! This is a great place to start; four great live cds in one collection at a very reasonable price. For any KISS fan wondering if this set is worth the money, ask yourself one question, "Do you want the best?" I thought so....add to cart ASAP.Alive Box Set OverviewTime to rock and roll all nite! Kiss Deluxe Limited Edition ReviewThe marketing machine of Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley have produced yet another "Greatest Hits" package. This time it comes in the form of a 5 Disc set.
This was announced early on to be mostly rare, unreleased, live and demo material. Unfortunately most of it comes straight from the bands studio albums. When I first saw the track listing I was pretty disappointed. Being a major Kiss fan for 26 years, at first glance I could see that I already owned most of what was considered rare material. To my surprise these versions were different from what I have. Here is a run down disc by disc.
Disc1 has some of the best rare tunes in the set. The highlights are an early version of "She" which has flutes playing throughout the song. "100,000 Years" is a studio track which sound a lot like the version on "Kiss Alive". "Firehouse" has someone's voice in the control room stopping the song and having the band retake it from the top. The highlight on this disc is "Acrobat" which would be cut down and renamed "The Love Theme From Kiss" on the bands debut album. This version moves into a rocking segment that sounds a little like the beginning of "Detroit Rock City". This part of the song is full of energy and really kicks (...). Overall this disc has some quality material on it.
Disc2 has another batch of rare tunes on it. The highlights are an in the groove demo called "Doncha Hesitate". "Bad, Bad Lovin'" is an early version of "Calling Dr. Love". It is interesting to see the changes of the final product. "Love Is Blind" is a song by Gene that would have fit in perfectly on his 1978 solo album. The highlight of this disc is the demo of "God Of Thunder" which is a faster rockin' version with Paul on vocals and slightly different lyrics. Disc 1&2 are the gems of the collection.
Disc3 is where the set falls off. It is made up of mostly album tracks. This disc kicks off with the studio version of "Detroit Rock City" and is blended right in to a live version of "King Of The Night Time World". The demo version of "Radioactive" is cool. Other than that, this disc is nothing more than a "Greatest Hits" package. It really does nothing to add to the collection.
Disc4 too is not much as far as rarities. The highlights are a demo called "Time Traveler" sung by Paul. "Ain't That Peculiar" is a rare gem featuring the late Eric Carr on vocals. Written by Eric, it was an early version of what later became "Little Caesar". The studio material on this disc is actually very strong and a great representation of the band during the 80's.
Disc5 too only has a couple rare pieces. "Domino" is an early version of the song with slightly different lyrics. The disc repeats two tunes from Disc 1 - "Nothin' To Lose" and "Rock And Roll All Nite" both done live on this disc. The highlight of this disc is an anthem called "It's My Life". This song never made it on a previously release and I don't know why. One of the bands best and strongest anthems, it features Gene and Ace on vocals. This song needs to be released as a single with a video to go with it. One of the highlights in the whole set.
The Book is a great piece of information. It has comments from band members (mainly Gene and Paul) on each of the tracks in the set. It also lists when and where the song was recorded, who wrote it, played on it, produced it, and what album it appeared on. It's interesting to see who actually played on some of the songs. You might be surprised to see that as few as one band member actually played on a track that made it on an album. I would love to see a whole book on every Kiss song recorded and released but with input from "all" members past and present.
Overall Review
This set could have been more of a treat for die hard fans like myself. There are only 26 rare, unreleased, live and demo tunes. The other songs come from the bands albums.
Missing are many rare and demo tunes such as "Sword and the Stone" and "Don't Run" which later became "Dark Light" off of "The Elder". Even the Wicked Lester album in it's entirety could have been added to the collection. Some time back I found 30 demos on Napster. Only one of those is in this collection.
A 70's concert video or DVD would have been a nice addition. But if they added too much, they would have less material for similar future releases. I wouldn't be surprised to see the band re-release their albums with added demo tracks as Motley Crue did a couple years ago.
All in all, the set in nicely packaged. Each CD has it's own cover and some cool photos of the band inside. The book is a great addition too. Over all the set is a nice addition to any Kiss collection. Even though I would have liked to see more rare material. I have to admit that Gene and Paul know how to market the band and I still admire them. But c'mon guys, you would still have enough material to keep us die hard fans spending our hard earned cash for the next twenty years, even if this whole collection was comprised of rare material.
If you're an avid Kiss fan, get the mini guitar case version. If you like Kiss but are not a collector, pick up the standard box version. If you just enjoy their music you might want to stick to the studio albums that you can pick up as you feel the need to.Kiss Deluxe Limited Edition Overview

Give Me Air ReviewI bought this one on a chance because John Corabi(vocals), Joe Lynn Turner(vocals) and Bob Daisley(bass) were on this. Funny thing is, my favorite song on the cd, "I'll Lay Down" doesn't include any of them and has a killer guitar riff that is very catchy. Lots of different performers on this cd, usually means it is going to be ok or not so good. Not this time. Even though I'm not rating it 5 stars, it is close because for some reason I just keep putting it back in my car cd player to hear it again. It's nice to have a good rockin cd with alot of different singers, guitars, etc, and have it all blend together nicely. I think if you are a UNION fan you will also like this group.Give Me Air Overview

Behind the Player (2010) ReviewThis is a pretty fun DVD. Big fans may find more to love than myself, being a casual fan of Ace and KISS. It isn't that expensive and for the money you get a nearly half hour sort of biography piece that is fun and interesting with a bit of history and a bit of good tech talk about guitars and amps etc. Ace also teaches a couple of tunes Cold Gin and Shock Me. The bonus performances and solos and promo for his latest album are nice extras but hardly revelatory. Its well produced for the most part and there are other musicians on the project to add their 2 cents like Matt Sorum and George Lynch that don't add that much in my opinion. Ace really looks shot to heck and ready to join ANVIL but he seems in good spirits and comes across and a sort of cool dude.

Kiss Forever: Bruce Kulick, Bob Kulick, Learn how to play Kiss guitar songs instructional DVD ReviewThis is by far the most entertaining and insightful KISS guitar instructional video out there. Bruce and Bob each share 5 of their favorite KISS tunes that they played on with the band. Bob was the ghost guitarist for Ace Frehley back in the late 70's and early 80's and his selections cover the ALIVE II studio tracks, Paul Stanley's '78 solo album, and Killers. All the tunes Bob covers are classic. He shares some really cool lead tricks that he used in the songs. Many of which I always thought were done with a tremolo bar, but he's mainly a fixed bridge player. Nowhere to Run is by far my favorite song on this DVD and Bob does a great job breaking down the song and playing the parts. Bruce plays selections from Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade, Revenge, and Carnival of Souls. Bruce does a great job of explaining his guitar parts on his songs and shows you a couple of CD's from his personal collection on which the songs appear. Crazy Crazy Nights and Domino are the standout tracks for Bruce and he also does an excellent job on Forever. With 10 songs jammed on the DVD the guys don't have a lot of time to show you exactly what you need to play. However, they provide you with a website that has all of the tablature to the songs. The DVD is the perfect accompaniment to the tablature to give you what you need to nail all the tunes with a little practice. The Kulick brothers have such a great attitude and it really shines through on the DVD. You feel like you're sitting in your living room jamming with some old buddies when you watch it. It also has a bonus feature with Bruce explaining a little about his effects pedal setup. You were awesome Bruce, but I have to admit that Bob had a much better tone on the DVD.
