David Bowie - A Reality Tour ReviewSome of Bowie's DVD concerts are good and some are great. This is one of the great ones. Remixed into 5.1 Surround Sound, the audio is amazingly crisp and clear. The light show is blinding in some cases (as was the actual show in person) and the director/editors use this to their advantage in splicing scenes. Some of the special effects (freeze-frame, reverse imaging, blurs, etc.) can get tedious, but it doesn't hurt the overall feel of the concert. Each band member gets plenty of close-ups and the backing vocals are near perfect. After nearly two years on the road, Bowie has connected to his audience like never before, losing any pretension. He's there to have a good time.
With nearly 60 songs used throughout the tour, it's tough to settle on which 30 Bowie decided to use, but the variety is great. "Quicksand" and "Let's Dance" were, unfortunately, not used, but some of the stand-out cuts were the incredible audience sing-along, "All The Young Dudes", the hard, fast romping of, "Hang On To Yourself" and "Under Pressure" where bassist Gail Ann Dorsey seems to channel Freddie Mercury's voice. It's eerie and wonderful! The box itself is disappointing, in that it is thin cardboard and the insert gives little information about the tour. I would have liked to know the concert song lists and the cities played. If that's all I can find wrong with this set, I'd say Bowie delivered a prized concert DVD. Did I mention its incredibly low priced?

Outlaws ReviewTo listen to The Outlaws is an amazing experience. Blazing melodic guitars. Terrific harmonies. Technical virtuosity. And just plain out great rock n roll.
This band never really got the credit they deserved. Even there less known stuff is great. I really believe the Outlaws have the top guitar unit in rock n roll. There picking acumen, feel, speed and melody are all as good as it gets!
Great vocals, too!
This album is there first offering and its a strong one. You got your well-known radio play "There Goes another love song" and "Green Grass". Also strong are the other entries, there isn't a bad song on the CD.
"Knoxville Girl" has a strong bluegrass influence. "Stay With Me" is a flat out upbeat rocker. "Song In The Breeze" is harmony heaven and "It Follows From Your Heart" is a great number, a slow ballad which veers from normal Outlaw fare.
Also check out the solo in "Cry No More". great guitar work by Hughie thomasson and Billy Jones.Outlaws Overview

Discipline ReviewSeveral years after the band broke up, Robert Fripp resurrected King Crimson, but in a way no one would have expected. Returning was drummer Bill Bruford, and joining was bassist/stickist/backing vocalist Tony Levin and one of the few who could stand next to Robert Fripp holding his chosen instrument and not look inept, guitarist/vocalist Adrian Belew. Originally a band called Discipline, Fripp realized this was King Crimson and renamed the band. Wrapped in a red sleeve with a Celtic knot on the cover, this album is in many ways as the cover implies-- intertwining and interlocking-- Fripp and Belew's guitars play complex lines that live with each other and don't stand without each other, supported by Levin's thunderous bass and melody vs. countermelody playing on the stick. Below all of this, Bruford is easily holding it all together. The album is one of the true greats of its era, and is certainly among the best Crimson has ever recorded.
From the opener, "Elephant Talk", you know you're in for something different-- Levin's melody/countermelody intro overlayed with two intertwined guitars, elephant squeals on guitar, a half-spoken vocal, and two bizarre guitar solos. Five minutes later, you're overwhelmed, what's amazing is that its got a groove, its a great rhythm, its just plain amazing.
The rest of the album pretty much follows suit in terms of being brilliant to the point of overwhelming while the environment and the mood changes-- interlocking guitars rule several of the songs (the breathtaking "Frame By Frame", with impassioned vocals and some of the fastest guitar licks you'll ever hear, the frantic "Thela Hun Ginjeet", and the title track-- an instrumental where you can really hear Fripp and Belew get into a groove). These are offset by a couple great ballads ("Matte Kudasai", with its beautiful slide guitar seagulls and an almost lazy feel to the vocal, "The Sheltering Sky", featuring a horn-toned Fripp guitar melody). In the middle of all of this is a piece that sounds like it would fit the last generation of Crimson better-- "Indiscipline". Building tension until the release-- an explosion of guitar pyrotechnics and a blazing solo that almost seems out of place here, but works.
Something of note-- this is NOT a progressive rock album (in terms of the genre)-- in fact, its got more in common with new wave acts like the Talking Heads and the Police than it does with Yes and early Genesis. One of the reasons why I love Crimson so much is unlike many of those other progressive rock bands, they didn't stand still, they grew and changed and became something else over time.
Bottom line though-- this is one of the greats, highly recommended.Discipline OverviewWith this 1981 LP, King Crimson became one of the few bands to release a classic in three different decades. This was their highest-charting LP (#45) in 11 years, and that Fripp/Belew guitar interplay still dazzles; includes a bonus alternate version of Matte Kudesai !

Blue Jays ReviewThere are some CDs that are more difficult to rate than others. Particularly when so many people rave about how great a CD is. You want to say something new, but you also want to be objective and fair to all those people who either don't know the Moody Blues or know the Moodies but not well enough to know esoteric references to members. This album is one of those.
Let's start with the basics. This album was released while the Moody Blues were on hiatus, trying to decide whether they had things to contribute musically individually versus as a group. The album was recorded in the mid-70s, and it sounds like mid-70s soft rock. The music sounds very very much like the Moody Blues, though not quite, since the talents of Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge are missing. So while there is no mistaking that this album is by members of the Moodies, it's still not quite the same.
What characterizes the songs on this CD the most are the harmonies. Justin Hayward and John Lodge have always harmonized well, and those harmonies are exploited for full effect on this album. Listen to "You", "My Brother", "I Dreamed Last Night" and "Who Are You Now" and you will see what I mean. These two are masters of mellow rock.
In fact, if you are looking for a romantic evening in front of the fire place with your favorite guy or girl, and a bottle of wine, and are looking for listening music, not talking music, pop this in, turn out the lights, and listen. This music will make you so mellow and feel so good that you'll not want to move, except for cuddling, of course!
This album was recorded with the fully matured voices of Justin Hayward and John Lodge. Their voices alone could have carried any of these songs. The songs are well performed, giving musical credence even to the weakest of lyrics on this album. Conversely, when the lyrics match well with the music and either or both of their voices, the songs are unstoppable. It's almost a good thing that this pair didn't record more albums separate from the Moody Blues because I'm not sure the world was ready for that many blues songs with so much feeling.
Bonus! This album includes Justin Hayward's solo song "Blue Guitar". The tone of this song fits well with the rest of the album, and helps to extend the length of the album to better make use of the time available on a CD, recalling that "Blue Jays" was originally recorded on vinyl. Furthermore, having "Blue Guitar" at the end makes you wish the album wouldn't end, so you have to go back and play it over again. Or pop in a Moody Blues album.
Do you like the Moody Blues, particular from the classic years? Do you like the songs Justin Hayward (who has one of the most unique voices in rock/pop music, ever) and John Lodge sing? Do you like mellow or romantic rock music? Why are you still reading this review? This album is excellent, so my advice to you is,
Go buy and good bye.Blue Jays Overview

Gimme Back My Bullets ReviewGimme Back My Bullets is generally considered the least successful of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd albums, but it has always been my favorite. I rate it just slightly ahead of the essential "Pronounced". I remember staying up late as a teenager, to hear its midnight debut on the local radio station (WDVE, Pittsburgh), and buying it ASAP after that.
"Bullets" is a transitional album for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Most obviously, it features a 2-guitar line-up, coming after the departure of Ed King, and a few months before Steve Gaines joined. The 2-guitar sound is a bit leaner that previous albums, but Collins and Rossington are more than capable of carrying the load! But it's also their first production with the legendary Tom Dowd replacing Al Kooper who had produced their first 3 albums. And it has the debut of the Honkettes, the female backup vocal group consisting of JoJo Billingsley, Cassie Gaines and Leslie Hawkins.
Gimme Back My Bullets is very much Allen Collins' record. Over the first 3 Skynyrd albums, the songwriting was spilt pretty evenly between the 3 guitarists (along with Singer Ronnie Van Zant, of course). Allen Collins co-authors 8 of 24 songs, Gary Rossington and Ed King each co-author 7. But Allen wrote many of Skynyrd's best songs, including "Freebird", "Gimme 3 Steps", "Tuesday's Gone" and "Needle & The Spoon". On "Bullets", Allen has songwriting credits (along with RVZ) on all 8 of the original songs (Rossington is also part of the team on 3 of the songs).
Musically, "Bullets" didn't have any big hits, but does include several Skynyrd standards. All of the songs are great. The title track, "Double Trouble" and "Searchin" are all Skynyrd standards, along with the acoustic-ish "All I can Do Is Write About It". "Roll Gypsie Roll" is a reflective piece about life on the road, and one of my all time favorite songs. "Every Mother's Son", "Trust" and "Cry For The Bad Man" are all solid songs. There's also a cover of J.J.Cale's "Same Old Blues" that has a great, almost funky, feel. Trivia note: Lynyrd Skynyrd only did 2 covers on their first 4 studio albums, both were of J.J. Cale songs. The other was "Call Me The Breeze".
If you're a casual Skynyrd fan, start with "Pronounced", or the original band's live set "One More From The Road". But if you want to get deeper into the spirit of the band, this album can't be beat.Gimme Back My Bullets Overview

Essential Santana ReviewThis new 2 cd set from Santana is a good value. It is probably aimed at fans only aware of Carlos Santana's last two guest filled albums. It is a pretty handy set though. The material is from his tenure at Columbia records from 1969-1989. The set illustrates Santana's varied influences from latin, blues, rock, and jazz. The first disc contains material from the first and best incarnation of his band which featured Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Michael Shrieve on drums, Neal Schon on second guitar and the standard for Santana, a fiery latin percussion section. The material for this classic period includes a cover of Willie Bobo's (a big early influence) "Evil Ways", "Soul Sacrifice" and a medley of Peter Green's "Black Magic Woman" and Gabor Szabo's "Gypsy Queen". The Latin "Oye Como Va" and "No One To Depend On" based on another Willie Bobo song are notable. The live version of Miles Davis' jazz/fusion classic "In A Silent Way" is worth the price of the set alone. Material from Santana's team up with jazz/fusion guitarist John McLaughlin is also included. However, a number of essential cuts like "Persuasion", a cover of jazz saxophonist Gene Ammon's "Jungle Strut", and early instrumentals "Incident At Neshabur" and the great "Song Of The Wind" are omitted.
The second disk begins his transition to more single oriented material. It is beneficial in that it summarizes the better material from some of his weaker albums. The second disk includes covers the the Zombies' "She's Not There", Buddy Holly's "Well Alright" via Blind Faith, and Russ Ballard's "Winning". A rare live version of the Latin workout "Dance Sister Dance" and rockers like "Open Invitation" and "All I Ever Wanted" also make the cut. However, cuts like "Europa", "Aqua Marine" and "Blues For Salvador" show why Carlos Santana's Mike Bloomfield influenced guitar playing is highly admired. Not only can he play fast and flashy when necessary but he also has good sense of when to play slower and invoke real feeling in his playing. Last but not least is a duet with blues icon John Lee Hooker on "The Healer". The second disk is only 74 minutes long so another song or two could have been added to the set.
The set provides a good introduction to those curious about Santana's earlier work. The second disk summarizes some his singles from his spottier late seventies and eighties albums. While his first three albums are essential this set successfully shows the varied styles and influences of the latin/rock pioneer Carlos Santana.Essential Santana OverviewCarlos himself chose the 33 tracks on this nicely annotated, limited-edition overview! Includes Evil Ways; Jingo; Soul Sacrifice; Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen; Oye Como Va; Samba Pa Ti; Love, Devotion and Surrender (previously unavailable in the U.S.!); She's Not There; Everybody's Everything; Stormy; Well All Right; Winning; Hold On , and more.

Ace Frehley ReviewI absolutely thought KISS was one of the best things in my life when I was 9 or 10 years old. I didn't think a thing about the sexual innuendoes, the drugs, the whatevers, I just loved KISS. Now that I'm an adult, some of those sexual innuendoes are just hysterical, make you want to cringe thinking you liked it at one time, and make it an embarassment to say you liked KISS.
Ace Frehley in my mind was always exempt from this. By far, Ace was always my favourite member of KISS, his lead guitar playing is vastly underrated,(his leads had hooks, they were part of the song like the melody), and he didn't dive the depths of immature sexual innuendo as much as grown men such as Gene or Paul. Honestly, Gene and Paul wrote kiddie stuff, embarassing for a 35 year old to be writing honestly, and strictly derived to accomodate a certain market. Young, 16 year old boys who can't drink, smoke or get girls yet. Ace didn't write songs like that, apart from Cold Gin on the first KISS album.
This album stands well to time. The songs do not sound dated, the lyrics are not stupid or banal or anything indicating a 70's attitude, and it just rocks. All the way through. There is not a weak track on it, and even though criticism is there on Wiped Out from other fans, I love that song for its time changes (Anton Fig's drumming on this song is the album's standout) and it is just a great song period. Its always been one of my top 3 songs on the album. Ace just really showed how talented he was. I've never read Simmons autobiography, and I have no interest in it, but Ace always lived up to his potential even if he was chemically enhanced sometimes. Its why Ace's solo album was the best received by a wider fan base than the KISS Army, the critics and musicians alike, it was THAT good an album. It has an element of STREET about it, slightly punk in attitude. This album is actually full of attitude, and it just says New York all over it.
Ace had pop sensibilities as well. 'What's On Your Mind' borderlines between hard rock and pop. No, Ace is not the greatest singer, but he has that Jimi Hendrix approach where in the end you can't hear anyone else singing the songs as well but Ace Frehley.
It has become a cliche this album. I imagine people who don't even own it now say Frehley's album was the best when giving their mock history of KISS. The fact of the matter was, it is and still is. You can play the whole thing through and not smirk because the lyrics are hokey or childish, the guitar solos are polished and gutsy at the same time, the drummer was great, the songs and arrangements were class, the production was just near perfect but just enough punk to have credibility. If not for Frehley, the next KISS album (Dynasty) would have been horrible and so dated in sound and sentiment that they might not have survived to GET to the 80's. Some say Simmons and Stanley are KISS, including themselves, but what a shame. Ace Frehley consistently came up with songs that even KISS fans say are the best songs in the KISS repertoire, Cold Gin, Parasite, Shock Me, Rocket Ride, Hard Times. The guy just had tons of talent and should have gotten out of KISS as soon as he released this album.
THAT would have been a success story. Maybe Simmons is right and Frehley never lived up to his potential. Maybe its because he had Simmons telling him he never would, you just never know.
Do you mean to tell me that Ace Frehley all messed up on booze and drugs working at half the potential, STILL came up with a better KISS album than KISS ever achieved? Even with Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, Hotter Than Hell, Ace Frehley's solo album was so together that no one could diss it. There's no Goin Blind's, no Great Expectations, no Love Theme From KISS, that just makes you say was this person serious when they wrote this? They are joking right??? Frehley's album you can listen to as a kid, and listen to as an adult and say, I knew I had good taste.Ace Frehley Overview

Long Road Out of Eden Review28 years after their last studio album, four remaining Eagles release a new album. Long Road out of Eden features 2 discs and 20 new tracks. Disc 1 is described as being a re-introduction to the band with the opening track a post nuclear vision of Seven Bridges Rd, followed by a song they forgot to record 35 years ago "How Long" by long time friend JD Souther. This stamps Eagles all over it and just gets better each time you hear it. Harmonies and all the little things which most bands would overlook, make this a classic already in the Take it Easy, Already Gone genre. Next up is Busy Being Fabulous which is an update of Those Shoes with a killer chorus and typically cynical Henley lyric. Has the Eagles sound. Next is a weepie with a countrified Frey vocal. Quite nice, Walsh steps up next with Guilyy of the Crime, whilst being pleasant is a little removed from the other material on this disc. Next up is the first of Tim Schmit's spots with a brilliant (single written all over it)I Don't want to Hear Anymore, is simply brilliant. Won't fit on contemporary radio but anyone reading this won't care anyway. Disc 1's highlight follows with Waiting in the Weeds. How to describe this song? It starts of as an acoustic, black, Henley vocal and shifts into an epic from 1st Chorus/Bridge on when Schmit/Frey's harmonies kick in. Its low fi, acoustic guitars and mandolin, but segues into something much more, the lyrics tell so many stories with multi dimensions and layers. By the end of the 7 minutes its a totally different beast, with an undeniable stamp of class. This track makes the 28 year wait all worth it.
After Weeds, all the other would seem insubstantial but in true Eagles tradition the material all stands up. No More Cloudy Days will have its fans, followed by Henley doing his best Bee Gee's impression on Fast Company. This has a killer chorus and will grow on you. Next up is a piece of Schmit brilliance with Do Something, more like his Poco work & Frey closes with another highlight You Are Not Alone.
If that wasn't enough we still have another whole disc, with the title track starting it off. This track will need some play to make it accessible but already the biting lyrics, killer Walsh guitar and atmospherics make it a dramatic, masterful tune. Long time collaborater, Jack Tempchin pitches in with a Frey lead vocal, Somebody which is a foot stomper. Henley next with Frail Grasp of the Big Picture, very Inside Job-like. Walsh with a JD Souther assist comes up with the Steely Dan like Last Good Time in Town. Frey with I like to watch a Woman Dance, is low-fi and voyeuristic, but pleasant, Three songs left, all good especially Centre of the Universe which is a modern update of the whole sound. I'm still trying to decide what the lyrics mean but I'm sure George W Bush won't download it. Business as Usual is another which could be a Henley single but has the superb Eagles harmony support. Slightly rocky, confrontational, another winner. Then the closer which if its the last song ever from the Eagles then its a fitting epitaph, lets hope its not, as this album has proved that the Eagles biggest fear is unfounded and that they are still important, vibrant, and quite simply America's greatest ever rock band.Long Road Out of Eden OverviewJapanese only SHM pressing. Shaman ReviewI've been a devoted Santana fan for most of his career. Heck, I remember buying his first album on vinyl shortly after it was originally released. I've probably bought more of his releases over the years than any other single artist I follow. I've seen him live many times, going all the way back to the 70's, and always treasured the experiences.
With all that said, I was thrilled to see him come back into public aclaim with "Supernatural". While concerned somewhat about the commercialism of that release, it was a fresh enough approach that I could enjoy it, and be happy for Carlos because of the renewed attention it brought him. And for the long-time Santana fan, there was still enough traditional Santana sound there to enjoy.
However, with "Shaman", I feel he goes overboard with the multi-artist/colaborator approach, and at the same time, doesn't infuse enough traditional Santana music in the mix. "Shaman" unfortunately displays the all-too-American approach to marketing: if they liked it the first time, let's do it bigger, louder, and longer next time.
Musically, there's little new here since "Supernatural". Some of the guest artists are really questionable, talent-wise. It seems they just wanted to stuff this CD as full as possible with diverse individuals. Listening to the CD, I was struck by how common most of Carols' guitar licks sounded - it seems I've heard them all before, many times. In itself that isn't a bad thing, but given he's in the support on most of these tracks, it becomes all the more noticable. Sonically, the release suffers on many tracks from the type of compression typically found on commercial pop releases. It's mixed to sound ok on the car radio or an average stereo. Audiophiles with revealing, high-quality systems will lament the lack of sonic potential.
Most disturbing was noticing in the liner notes a page dedicated to plugging "Carlos by Carlos Santana Licensed Products". Everything from women's shoes to sunglasses to inspirational cards. I know that given the complete derth of talent being released by the record companies these days, even a release this commercial from Carlos Santana stands heads above the average. But do they have to hang every commercial opportunity possible on his shoulders? Or is it his choice to allow all this? In any event, it screams "sell out!".
While this CD may garner some Grammy's (unlikey to be as successful as it's predecessor, but given the state of music releases these days, anything's possible), it finds a slightly unwelcome home in this fan's Santana collection. But artists have to grow in their unique ways, and I hope this eventually inspires new, and more fittingly "Santana" creations in the future.Shaman OverviewHas some surface marks but plays well. Buy with confidence--see my feedback. Thanks and enjoy this great CD!

Rush - Rush in Rio (2003) ReviewI originally gave this three stars but after listening to the entire concert I raised it to four. There are definitely some sound problems early on but they were pretty much resolved by about 25 minutes into this 2 hour and 50 minute concert. It was apparant there was no sound check and the sound engineers had to make adjustments as the band played on. They were successful however and for the most part the sound is fairly good. Rush puts on a tremendous show playing songs from throughout their career. I would recommend this for all Rush fans as well as anyone wanting to see a great band.

B.B. King - Greatest Hits ReviewThis is an extremely brief single-disc summary of B.B. King's MCA output beginning with his first single for the label, 1963's "How Blue Can You Get?" through his pairing with Robert Cray on "Playin' with My Friends" from 1993's Blues Summit all-star recording. Among the many highlights are two tracks ("Every Day I Have the Blues" and "Sweet Little Angel") from the essential Live at the Regal, "The Thrill Is Gone" (which went to No. 15 in 1970, making it the highest charting blues song ever on the U.S. pop charts!) and the chilling "When Love Comes to Town" with U2. While condensing 30 years of music onto a single disc is an impossible task, this makes an excellent primer for novice fans on a budget. RECOMMENDED [Note: Last November MCA released the 2-disc B.B. King Anthology. It includes EVERY song on Greatest Hits, plus an additional 18 songs. For a few extra bucks, this would be the album to get instead.]B.B. King - Greatest Hits Overview

Butterfield Blues Band Review
Yes, this is the great PBBB 1st album (actually, the 2nd, see below), but it's not the CD you should be buying.
This domestic CD was released in 1990 and has never been remastered.
The import 2CD version of this title (backed with the PBBB's 2nd album "East West") is the one to get. It was remastered by Bob Irwin in 2001.
Ditto for "Pigboy Crabshaw" & "In My Own Dream"; the 2004 import 2CD is also remastered (and sounds incredible) and the domestic CD's are not.
Why WEA and Elektra have not made these four remasters available domestically is a mystery.
Don't waste your money on these inferior versions: Get the imports!
Also: Don't miss the "Original Lost Elektra Sessions" CD, which was the real first PBBB album, recorded before this one. There is some fabulous music on that CD, and the liner notes by Paul Rothchild are worth the price alone.Butterfield Blues Band OverviewBloomfield, Bishop and Butterfield knocked down walls between black and white with their strong love of blues and their equally powerful chops. Here are Born in Chicago; Blues with a Feeling; Last Night; Mellow Down Easy , and the rest of their 1965 debut!

Heart of Rock and Roll: The Best of Huey Lewis and the News ReviewThey say that good things come to those who wait. Well, thousands of fans waited patiently for years for a Huey Lewis & The News compilation, only to be extremely disappointed with Time Flies. I bought Time Flies as soon as I started collecting CDs, and up to now I just lived with being unsatisfied with its track listing.
God knew how much I wanted a great Huey Lewis & The News CD, so He gave me an idea recently. Instead of waiting for another American compilation to be released, find out if there's a good import of their greatest studio hits. That's how I came up on this, a UK import entitled The Heart of Rock & Roll: The Best of Huey Lewis & The News. This excellent one-disc collection has the four essential big hits that I was dying to have in my library that Time Flies left off for some unknown reason.
"Jacob's Ladder" was one of three songs to hit #1 for the band. "Walking on a Thin Line" is a vastly underrated song of the 80s, featuring one of the band's best hooks. "Perfect World" should be a major anthem song that the world knows by heart, just like Queen's "We Will Rock You" and Kool & The Gang's "Celebration." Just think about it. The next time the Yankees lose in the World Series, the opposing team's stadium could play "Perfect World," and it would fit to a tee! "Hip To Be Square" is thought by many to be the song that best symbolizes what Huey Lewis & The News are: A group that loves to make music, entertain their fans, and to have fun doing it.
And of course, you get most of the group's other biggest hits, such as the catchy classic, "Power of Love," the misunderstood "I Want A New Drug," the title track, and the song on which Huey Lewis & The News show their musicianship skills, "Heart & Soul." I say 'most' because this album doesn't quite have ALL the hits. "I Know What I Like," "Doing it All for My Baby," "It's Alright," "Couple Days Off," and "It Hit Me Like A Hammer" were left off. But those omissions aren't as damaging as the ones that were left off of Time Flies are.
If you're a big Huey Lewis & The News fan, don't waste your time and money on Time Flies. Whether you buy it here and now on Amazon or wait patiently for it on eBay, THIS is the single-disc compilation to get if you don't want to shell out the cash for the 3-disc box set.Heart of Rock and Roll: The Best of Huey Lewis and the News Overview

A Decade Of Steely Dan ReviewA truly comprehensive must-have Steely Dan collection would fill two or, more likely, three CDs. It's just impossible to cram all the vital cuts from the Dan's career onto one disc. But this one has the major American hits (excepting Grammy-winner "Cousin Dupree" from their later Two Against Nature album...though I can't really say it was a "hit"; really, the Academy was just guiltily giving the Dan their long long long long long overdue statuettes). It's well-sequenced and it sounds great.
Recommended for the casual Steely Dan fan, or for a friend who's only heard a few tunes in passing. There's enough here to further whet your appetite if you've got one. If you already know you like all these songs, go straight to the Citizen Steely Dan box set.
Collectors take note: There are two versions of the song "F.M." The one on this disc ends with a guitar solo, whereas the version on Steely Dan Gold and Citizen Steely Dan ends with a sax solo. Both are great.A Decade Of Steely Dan Overview

Paul Simon Songbook ReviewThe arrival of this album on compact disc (at last!) is a true delight for die-hard Paul Simon fans, and should provide a real delight of discovery for more casual listeners. A bit of history, first: This was the product of one of several pauses in the Simon and Garfunkel partnership. The two enjoyed a hit record in the 1950s as Tom and Jerry, but went their separate ways for a while before coming together to record "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." Although the album was billed as featuring "exciting new sounds in the folk tradition," it didn't create much excitement, vanishing almost without a trace.
So it was back to college for Art, and off to England for Paul, where he played in small underground clubs. A BBC announcer championed Simon's work, prompting public requests to buy recordings of his music. In May of 1965, Simon went into Columbia's studios in London with his acoustic guitar to record the tracks that made up this album. Some are repeated from "Wednesday Morning 3 A.M."; others would later find their way onto the second and third Simon and Garfunkel releases. According to one biography, the entire album was recorded in an hour, with Simon doing only one take of each song. (However, the liner notes on this release contradict that, indicating, for instance, the version of "Leaves That Are Green" that appears is take 11.)
The production bill for this simple venture reportedly totaled $300. (And yes, that's Kathy, of "Kathy's Song" fame, with him on the cover.) While the recordings from these 1965 sessions may lack the signature Garfunkel harmonies and the American studio polish, they offer a unique look at these masterpieces in their purest essence: just a man, his guitar, and the deepest feelings of his soul.
This might have been the birth of Simon's career as a solo recording artist. But back in the states, Tom Wilson, producer of "Wednesday Morning 3 A.M." was preparing to add electric guitar, bass and drums to one of the cuts from that album...a song that was also included on the "Songbook." It was "Sounds of Silence." And the rest, as they say, is history.
The "Songbook" has only been available in the U.S. as a vinyl import until now, except for its inclusion in a briefly-available boxed set of Simon's solo works. This long-overdue, but highly welcome release will help to fill a gap in many collections and provide an opportunity for fresh appreciation for these timeless songs.--William C. Scary Monsters ReviewBowie's albums are like a fine wine. Scary Monsters is a particular vintage which still sounds excellent today. It's the artistic vintage of Bowie which continues to surprise people like myself.
Every new Bowie album in the 70s was a new experience for its listeners - literally. With the exception of the Ziggy / Alladin Sane period - Bowie's albums from the mid-70s onwards were refreshingly different from one another. This is no exception. It's been mentioned in other reviews that Scary Monsters was Bowie's last significant release from a historical perspective. That's pretty true. If he'd died after this was released - his legend would've certainly been sealed on a high note.
The New wave artists who were about to arrive on the UK scene worshipped Bowie. Scary Monsters shows why: Bowie was a law unto himself.
Cryptic yet accessible; raw yet melodic - Bowie's lyrics drive this album, as does the great guitar work of Fripp and a cameo by Pete Townshend. This is a far more sonic work than Bowie's previous albums, and plunges the listener headlong into his inner world. The iconic tracks here that everyone knows are Ashes to Ashes; Fashion and Scary Monsters. The lesser known tracks (ie not heard on his compilations) - form the rest of the snapshot. Scary Monsters is very much like a portrait of Bowie, of which the better known songs are simply parts of his overall psyche.
Scary Monsters capped a tremendous musical decade that blew critics and audiences away, and belongs in any Bowie collection. Many of his ardent fans wish he would or could return to this form -and some believe he has with his 90s releases, but don't believe it...For some reason, Bowie has never sounded as artistically immersed in a one particular work after this one.
So get this vintage for its raw passion. And if you can, do get the rykodisc for the extra tracks which are worth it.Scary Monsters OverviewJapanese limited edition issue of the album classic in a deluxe, miniaturized LP sleeve replica of the original vinyl album artwork.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Alone Together ReviewTaped safely in a box is my copy of the original issue of this classic; you know, the one that folds out numerous times to make about four feet of album cover that proudly holds what many of us in 1970 called 'The *Barf* Album'! (Others here called it the 'marble' album.) Blue Thumb, the original label, put a lot into this album and it didn't end with the cover (second only to the cover of the first edition issue of Small Faces 'Ogden Nut Gone Flake.') The music here is one of the true artistic masterpieces from the era. Imagine a line-up that includes some of the top names of the period -- Jim Gordon (Derek & Dominoes, et al) is brilliant on the drums. Carl Radle (Derek, Delaney & Bonnie, et al) is magnificent on the bass. Leon Russell adds piano in much of the album and is at his peak. Hey, when you're playing alongside guys of this calibre, you better be! Then throw in Jim Capaldi and Stevie Winwood (Traffic) on some songs. They play with a disciplined yet fiery style that was better than most anything they ever did in Traffic. Add probably the finest Eric Clapton lead solo of all time (every bit as sweet as his playing on the Beatles 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps') at the end of 'Look at Me, Look at You.' This little-known Clapton masterpiece was recorded during the time when labels didn't like to share their artists with other labels. So, just as Clapton wasn't credited for 'My Guitar...' and George Harrison became 'l'Angelo Mysterioso' for his favor-returning appearance with Cream on 'Badge' -- most never knew that Clapton graced this one with some awesome work. The best way to think about this one is to think of Traffic, Derek and the Dominoes, Joe Cocker Band, Clapton and some of the other brilliant musicians hereon all playing better than they ever did anywhere else. This is Dave's best album by far! It was simply too good for the radio, though it did get a lot of airtime, -- but as was always the case back then -- on the less brilliant cuts. Buy this one for Clapton's end solo alone! It's as good as *anything* he's ever played before or since! You'll find it tucked away at the half-time end-piece of "Look at Me" and all the musicians in attendence know what's happening and play the piece with all the dignity and awe that it deserves. It doesn't come any more brilliant than this, kiddies (and aging kiddies!). Thanks Dave for making this one -- thirty years later and I'm still blown away by this one!Alone Together Overview

Rock & Roll Over ReviewTHE BAND: Gene Simmons (Gene Klein), Paul Stanley (Stanley Eisen), Ace Frehley (Paul Frehley), Peter Criss (Peter Crisscoula).
THE DISC: Released 11/11/76. Recorded at the Record Plant, NYC. 10 songs clocking in at approximately 34 minutes. A classic album cover - featuring the 4 painted faces in a colorful circle. Originally released on Casablanca Records in 1975; this remastered edition was released in 1997 on Mercury's label. Much improved sound in my book (deeper bass guitars and crisper highs). Liner notes are slim - a 2 page fold out with song titles, writing credits and times. Underneath the disc on the inside cover, there's an informative 5 paragraph history of what the band was going through at the time.
COMMENTS: Hot off the heels of the platinum "Alive!" and "Destroyer" comes "Rock And Roll Over"... Kiss' 6th album in 3 short years. In my opinion, this is the band's first studio album with absolutely no filler. Song writing credits include 5 from Paul, 4 from Gene, and 1 from Peter. The only thing missing is a song penned from Ace. There's no weird out-of-character tracks like "Great Expectations" (from "Destroyer") or the forthcoming "Then She Kissed Me" throwback (from soon to be released "Love Gun"). This is back to basics rock and roll. Great guitar solo's from Ace (see "Calling Dr. Love" and "I Want You"). Better than average drumming from Peter (not to mention a better than average Peter song in "Baby Driver"). High quality songwriting from Paul. And the typical comic relief and sleaze of scoring babes from Gene. This album, like so many of their releases in the 1970's was extremely short. The longest songs are "Calling Dr. Love" and "Love 'Em And Leave' Em" - both at 3:47 minutes each. Two songs ("Take Me" and "See You In Your Dreams") are under the 3-minute mark. Paul Stanley's "Hard Luck Woman" (sung by Peter) was originally written and to be given to Rod Stewart... it reached #11 on the billboard charts... giving KISS their biggest hit since Peter's ballad "Beth". Though not a big fan of Garth Brooks, the country singer did a good job on his remake of "Hard Luck Woman" on "Kiss My Ass - Classic Kiss Regrooved" (1994). "Rock And Roll Over" features 2 classic not-hit KISS tunes - "Take Me" and Mr. Speed". Kiss has a billion compilations out there, and these 2 songs have only made a few of them. Not to mention perhaps their finest album closer ever, "Makin' Love". Solid album. One of the early classic discs from KISS (4.5 stars).
Rock & Roll Over OverviewThe band reunited with producer Eddie Kramer for this raucous rocker from late 1976 (another #11 LP). The hits Hard Luck Woman and Calling Dr. Love join killer cuts like I Want You; Makin' Love , and Mr. Speed .

Song for Juli ReviewI've worn this out in four formats-8 track, cassette, lp and finally cd. This is 70's california pop at it's best. Solid songs, solid rhythm section, a brilliant solist (Jim Rothmeil) perfect piano parts and one of the most distinctive voices in pop music. A little pop, a little jazz, a little country, just a great record.
The highlight is probably the jazzy Ridgetop, Jesse's ode to his Marin County home, followed closely by the title cut (a song about his then 6 year old daughter) and a cajun influenced Lafayette Waltz/Jambalaya

The Wind ReviewYou know someone is unique when the guy finds out he has a terminal illness and he, not Leno or Letterman (no, certainly not Letterman), is the one who sees gallows humor in the predicament.
On the Letterman Show, Warren Zevon, with a wry, paradoxical smile and laugh, said that his fear of doctors was "one of those phobias that didn't pay off." Also on that night, Zevon, who has told us so much through his songs, gave us a precious nugget he discovered, something he knows that David Letterman and other people whose life expectancy doesn't number in months or days, or in Warren's case, as he's already supposed to be sleeping while dead, negative numbers: we better learn to enjoy each sandwich.
Zevon, surpassing the limitations prescribed by his doctors, has lived to see the birth of his twin grandchildren and the release of his wonderful latest album, the understandably melancholy, yet at times strangely upbeat, _The Wind_. I feel privileged to bear witness to the Mutineer's final journey, as it, like his last two studio albums, holds its own with Zevon's greatest albums (Warren's best album for my money is "Life'll Kill Ya," written and recorded way before the cancer diagnosis).
Anyway, Zevon starts out with one of his great turns of phrase: "Some days I feel like my shadow's casting me, Some days the sun don't shine." I love that image of a shadow casting a person -- it evokes a darkness, a state of nothingness, death, and yet, the lyrics are carefully crafted: only on some
days does Zevon, and I'm going to presume that there's plenty of self-reference going on on this album, feel that his shadow is casting him and that the sun is not shining. Even in the face of certain death, the implication remains that there are days when the sun shines -- when Warren still casts his own
shadow. Later in the song we're reminded that Warren's "winding down [his] dirty life and times," and the lump hits the throat. Oh, is this a painful record. And it was so painful, on so many levels (the VH-1 special is essential viewing), for Warren. But like all great works of music, it somehow raises the spirit -- of both the listener and the singer-songwriter.
Next is "Disorder in the House," an outrageous, confused rocker, that describes both Warren's state-of-mind, and, on a broader scale, the state-of-mind of his country: "The floodgates are open, We've let the demons loose, The big guns have spoken, and we've fallen for the ruse." Bruce Sprinsgteen lends sharp
vocals and killer guitar to Disorder.
The third song is "Knockin'." There's nothing I can say about this song, this rendition, and all it means, that could do it justice. So I won't try.
"Numb as a Statue" proves that, no matter what, Zevon's not going to lose that biting, intelligent, sarcastic sense of humor: "I don't care if it's superficial, You don't have to dig down deep, Just bring enough for the ritual, get here before I fall asleep."
What follows is a song that I immediately place among Warren's greatest, and without hesitation I find it to be the best thing on "The Wind": "She's Too Good For Me." This one brought tears to my eyes, but, strangely enough, not in the way "Dirty Life and Times" or, my God, the last song did, but on a level
associated purely with the song itself -- I can envision the situation as removed from Warren Zevon's life and disease; it works on many levels. It's a work of pure beauty.
"Prison Grove" strikes me as in some ways Zevon's "I Shall Be Released." Both songs are ostensibly about escaping prisons, but ultimately the songs are universal and we're all in prisons that we will all one day inevitably escape: "Some folks have to die too hard, Some folks have to cry too hard, Take one last look at the prison yard, Goodbye Prison Grove."
There are also two great blues numbers on _The Wind_, "Please Stay" and "Rub Me Raw," that reminded me a bit of Dylan's blues on "Love and Theft." At this point, I think Zevon's blues have a basis that might even be comparable on an emotional level to the blues's original impetus: racism. Nobody is going to
question this white man singing the blues.
The album's final song is "Keep Me in Your Heart." It's opening pays homage to Dylan's _Time Out of Mind_: "Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath." This song absolutely destroys me, tears flow free, beyond mere watery eyes. If the
message "Keep me in your heart for awhile" is directed to Warren Zevon's fans, and not just his family and friends, Warren, you're going to be in my heart for a lot longer than a while. I only hope that I can be as strong and courageous as Warren Zevon, "Mr. 'Bad' Example", if the situation calls for it.
Rest in Peace, Warren. And thank you for all you've given us.The Wind Overview
