Survivor in Love ReviewAfter Baltimora's saw worldwide success with their 1985 debut single Tarzan Boy, the group released follows ups such as Living In The Background, Woody Boogie and The Jukebox Boy. Whilst all three follows up gained some success in certain countries, they were still largely unsuccessful, making no impact in America or the United Kingdom. Despite this, Baltimora went into the studio to record a follow up album to 1985's Living In The Background. The outcome was Survivor In Love.
The album's opener is titled Key Key Karimba and was the lead single from the album. Compared to the single version, the album version is extended at the beginning which makes a fitting opener. The introduction features some strong percussion and a memorable synthesized bassline. Female vocals repeat twice the line "Hypnotized by sounds, sounds in their own glory..." After, behind the percussion and synthesizer comes a hint of guitar which falls into the main infectious melody from the synthesizer. The verses flow perfectly with solid vocals and a catchy chant whilst the pre-chorus is just as strong. During the infectious chorus there are dominant female vocals and some strong guitar. Production is overall fantastic although the lead vocals could be more dominant in places. The ending features some interesting effects of more percussion and synthesized bass until the final chorus ends the song. A strong, up tempo dance track. "I was born dancing with this beat in my heart, shuffling together. Once I heard it, we were on the way to the top, this sound is forever..."
Next is Global Love which is a duet with Linda Wesley who also wrote the lyrics to this track. The song has a rather glossy sound to it and works well in the context that this song has a slow dance theme. A strong and seductive melody opens the song with some strong synthesizer and percussion. Jimmy McShane's vocals are strong and have feeling through the verse which is carried by the same opening melody. The pre-chorus adds another layer of powerful emotion with strong synthesizer. For this song, the chorus is performed by Wesley. Her vocals are strong and solid throughout. The song certainly doesn't rely on melody but focuses on emotion and lyrics. These lyrics focus on both the man and woman's point of view in their relationship. A great vocal performance from McShane follows the second chorus whilst the song ends with the last chorus. "You live as you do, it's alright to live as you choose. While listening to your past, my mind is running towards a global love..."
Jimmy's Guitar is an up tempo song with a fun melody. The song opens with a strong synthesizer melody with some guitar playing along in the background. During the verses there is some percussion, synthesizer and interestingly enough, some melodic whistling to carry the vocals. The pre-chorus features some strong guitar and some more solid vocals. A highly memorable chorus consists of a memorable chant, strong vocals and more great synthesizer. Here, the lyrics are pure fun which the vocals express further. Production is perfect for this track without making the song sound too over-produced. A fun, sing-a-long album track. "Everybody swings as the music plays, shining like a star above the place. Time is going on, running into dawn with me, like once upon a time. Bye-bye we're onto something wild...
Come On Strike is another up tempo dance track that begins with an energetic synthesizer melody and solid percussion. Another layer of synthesizer weaves on top of the rhythm which leads into the main melody featuring more synthesizer and guitar. The verses flow nicely with some strong lead vocals, featuring some great guitar. For the pre-chorus, female backing vocals are present over the first melody from the introduction. A highly energetic chorus features some strong blasts of synthesizer and more female backing vocals. The lyrics refer to the joy of dancing even when life looks bleak. A strong dance number, well suited to this album. "When your feeling kind of down, inside your blue, oh, tell me what you want to do. When you need a helping hand to see it through, oh, I'm the only way. Countdown, the time is right, we gonna go dancing..."
The next track is Set Me Free which features a strong opening melody of brass instrument and a strong synthesizer bassline. Piano and synthesizer carry the vocals along in the verses perfectly well. The chorus is the main highlight of this song with a strong melody consisting of piano, synthesizer and percussion whilst the entire chorus is rather infectious. McShane's vocals are strong and fluent with the meaningful lyrics referring to someone's desire and wish to be set free. Bassi's production is again consistently strong and thoroughly professional. A strong dance track with some meaningful lyrics for good effect. "Jumping around, I'm up and down at the ground, in the air. High as a kite, you say I'm flying by night, I don't care..."
Survivor In Love is one of the highlight's from the album. This track features the only writing credit for McShane. As usual, the music is written by Bassi but the lyrics here are written by McShane himself. Musically this song is in a similar tone to Global Love as this entire ballad is suited for a slow dance. The song begins with a emotional and rather heavenly synthesizer melody which immediately captures the fragile mood of the lyrics. McShane's vocals are at their best here with the perfect level of emotion and strength. Lead vocals are carried along by the synthesizer melody perfectly with a bassline joining after the first chorus. Here, the chorus is rather simple but effective, consisting of the song title being sung. The following section is differently styled and features a more dominant synthesizer melody, strong percussion and some beautifully emotive vocals. This section may actually be the real chorus of the song although what really is the chorus remains unclear. For the ending of the song, there is a strong guitar solo is also present which captures the mood even more effectively. Production is solid and consistently strong throughout. "Reflections of our love is in the sky, I can see a teardrop in your eye, Let me feel you close, I can't surrender. Survivor in love again, survivor in love again..."
Call Me In The Heart of The Night was the band's final single and stands as another strong point on the album with the entire song being very synthesizer driven. The song begins with a grand synthesizer melody and a strong synthesizer bassline. Shortly following, percussion and a hint of guitar joins. The song starts with the chorus and features some strong vocals and another great synthesizer melody. Here, the first verse flows from the chorus with some dominant vocals, a hint of backing vocals and a strong synthesizer melody in the background. After the second chorus comes another solo section with more guitar and synthesizer. This song's lyrics refer to a person who always has a busy schedule and so the night is the only time for romance. Production is again brilliant and has no fault. A strong song overall which deserves more recognition. "Keeping up the pace, beating on the hours as they tick away. Never ending race, I never stop to play, no. Call me in the heart of the night, my line's free for you. Call me tonight, never sleep, cause I am dreaming of you..."
The album's closer is Eye To Eye which begins with a mid tempo synthesizer melody, strong synthesizer bassline and stabs of brass instrument. Female vocals follow which lead into another brass melody. The verses flow nicely with the bassline and McShane's strong vocal. For the pre-chorus, backing vocals are present over the brass melody. The chorus features dominant female vocals over more brass instrument, giving a rather grand sound. The lyrics refer to the effects of a powerful and strong love between two people. Perhaps the chorus isn't quite as memorable as previous songs but this track still makes a strong and fitting closer. "Two of a kind, every time we meet the magic is there, like a new affair. Flying so blind, when we touch you got me floating on air, cause your loves so high. Reaching for the sky, yeah, yeah, higher, you and I. Eye to eye baby, heart to heart..."
For the CD, there is one bonus track which is the Mix Version of Global Love. This is really the single version of this track. This version is exactly the same as the album version. The only difference is that the sound on this mix version is slightly sharper, giving a more powerful sound. This was probably done to make it a stronger sounding single. A memorable chorus follows which features some fun and anthemic vocals, backed by synthesizer, lead guitar licks and drums. A solo section follows the second chorus, consisting of mainly synthesizer and a repeated vocal line. The song ends nicely with the final chorus, followed by the main melody. Lyrically, the song has many interpretations although the verses seem to refer to taking chances and avoiding insanity whilst the chorus says goodbye to the jukebox boy. This could perhaps be a relation to dancing. Overall, this is a strong song with the chorus being the clear highlight.
Baltimora remain a mysterious band even today. The group were Italian all except the frontman Jimmy McShane who was Irish. Today the group remains a one hit wonder in American and the UK with Tarzan Boy which is still hugely popular. The big mystery revolves around who really sang the Baltimora material. Some sources state that frontman McShane never really sang and he was only the image for the band. Apparently, the producer and songwriter Maurizio Bassi did the vocals.
