Carryin' On With Johnny Cash & June Carter ReviewI've been a huge fan of Johnny Cash for many years, while I've always wished that June had spent more time in the recording studio.
This particular album was recorded at a time when country duets were highly fashionable. Had Johnny and June recorded more albums together, they may have had the same success as Porter and Dolly, George and Tammy, Conway and Loretta. This was a very successful album, but they didn't follow it up. Instead, they simply included their duets on Johnny's solo albums.
It ain't me babe had been a hit a couple of years before this album was recorded. The other songs were all recorded in 1967. Long-legged guitar picking man and Jackson were the two new big hits that every country oldies fan will recognise. The other songs are also excellent and demonstrate that the chemistry between Johnny and June was brilliant.
This was and remains one of the more significant albums of Johnny's long and distinguished career, and also leaves us wondering how big a star June could have been had she taken a music career seriously.Carryin' On With Johnny Cash & June Carter Overview

A Friend of a Friend ReviewReasons this is a 5 star album---tracks 1, 4 and 9; great vocal harmonies (to be expected from Gillian and David); David's guitar playing (of course); and the overall Rawlings-style production that makes the music sound so effortless.
One thing that leaves me slightly disappointed is the limited new material (tracks 2 and 3 have been released on other albums and tracks 4 and 8 are covers). I've been told that one could also argue that track 5 is a semi-cover since the melody was taken from an old blues song, but since I was not familiar with that song, it was new to me. So out of 9 songs only 5 of them were "new". To be fair though, the Oberst/Young cover is so fantastic, it kind of has a life all its own. It's just been so long since their last album, I really wanted MORE.
The main thing that I am not crazy about is the heavy-handed Old Crow Medicine Show bleed into the Gillian and David sound. I know this is simply a matter of taste--I like OCMS and own a couple of their albums--but I would prefer that their influence be more subtle. Tracks 6-8 could easily appear on an Old Crow album with guest vocalists David and Gillian. I'm not a purist who despises the idea of them straying from their usual two guitar/two vocals routine. I just don't love the idea of Gillian and David sounding like guests on their own album.
But if you're a fan, you're going to buy this album and you're going to like it. It's nice to see David Rawlings get the accolades he deserves and I'm excited to add this to my collection.

Mojo ReviewThe Heartbreakers have evolved distinctly throughout their 30+ years of recording together. Listening to their catalog from the beginning to the present, one travels from an era of short, punchy garage-rock tunes in the 1970s, to the laid-back pop hits of the Jeff Lynne era, to their current period of meditative rock planted firmly in the band's primordial roots.
It's a natural progression, what with Petty's lament of modern music with the Last DJ in 2002, his efforts to keep '60s and '70s-era classic rock alive through his Buried Treasure radio show, the success of last year's Live Anthology, and a rapidly decentralizing music industry that's no longer ruled by the gatekeepers of Top 40 radio. It almost seems that Mojo just... had to be.
If Mudcrutch was Petty's country album, Mojo is his foray into blues recording (sprinkled with a little psychedelia and reggae to taste). Like Mudcrutch, Mojo is freewheeling, high-energy, and upbeat, and prone to a little jam session here and there -- which would have been unthinkable in the days of the neatly-trimmed Full Moon Fever or Into the Great Wide Open. Without a single bad song in the mix, Mojo is a cohesive album you can listen to from beginning to end.
Personally, I am digging latter-day Tom Petty. The band is as good as they've ever been, and each member seems to have increasing freedom to showcase their immense instrumental talents and unrivaled ability to complement one another. Mike Campbell's guitar is on fire through the whole album, and Scott Thurston breaks out of his shell with fine blues harmonica on several tracks.
As a departure from the past musical stylings that made the band successful, Mojo will certainly raise some eyebrows and not be to everyone's liking. Frankly, I think that's a good thing. These guys aren't trained monkeys paid to crank out the same songs over and over again. They're world-class musicians, and they deserve the chance to breathe a little. Play on, boys.Mojo Overview

Concert for Bangladesh ReviewWhen I purchase a re-master of a classic album, I am always alert to the fact that there might be possible tampering with the original mix: instruments or noises either added or subtracted. Upon listening to the new version of THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH, it is very clear that there was a lot of subtraction going on. Although some new clarity is brought into the overall sound of the recording (which originally sounded a bit muddy to some people's ears), there has been an extensive change in many of the sounds I was familiar with on the original LP. For example, several of the stage comments have been deleted, Harrison's introduction of Leon Russell is one. Also, the inspiring hoots and shouts of the background singers during "That's The Way God Planned It" have been erased. Even many of the hilarious audience comments that were audible (someone shouting "Do something Ringo!!" prior to "Awaiting on You All") are now missing. Overall, the new crowd sounds seems to be a lot different from the sounds that were on the original LP. I don't know why the producers of the re-master decided to do this. They should have gone for a more faithful approach. Because of this, the original CD version is still better.
Additionally, the new cover art is not faithful to the original album package. Some of the photos are still there, but I wish that the entire original book would be available for this edition. Not to mention the chronic problem of CD storage: in this package, the bare disc is stuffed in a non-protective sleeve, ready for a barrage of scuffs and scratches.
Despite the drawbacks, the new version of THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH not without merits. As mentioned above, there is a new sound clarity which still sounds very good. And then there's the extra Dylan track from the afternoon show "Love Minus Zero/No Limit." Perhaps a few other alternate tracks from the afternoon show could have been added as well as there is plenty of room on the discs for more music.Concert for Bangladesh OverviewThis is a new reissue of the legendary 1971 benefit concert organized by George Harrison. Gone Again ReviewPatti Smith is an artist whose failures are often as interesting as her successes, and many of her recordings offer a mixture of both--but here in GONE AGAIN, which Smith dedicates to her deceased husband, there is only success piled upon success. This is easily the best of her post-comeback recordings, and it ranks along side her earlier successes HORSES and EASTER.
The title cut, which opens the collection, blasts full throttle with all the ferocity one expects of Patti Smith at her best--but the cut is actually a little atypical of the album as a whole, which adopts a quiet, musing tone as Smith sings about life, love, and loss. Concert for George ReviewFrom the opening track, Sarve Shaam with its wonderful intonation of bells, sarod and hypnotic voices and Eric Clapton's introduction until its conclusion on the second disc with Joe Brown's wonderful "I'll See You In My Dreams," this set is as wonderful a remembrance any man could hope for from his friends and loved ones.
Olivia makes it clear in the notes that George, the quiet one, was in fact full of life, pursuing his marriage and family with the same intensity and respect that he treated his career, all the while retaining the playfulness that set he and his Liverpool colleagues off from everyone else ever in rock. When you consider that this man is one of the 4 reasons anybody ever wanted to be a rock musician, you might think you were approaching the sacred. In fact, as is clear from his friends, he is someone they went to to play ukeleles with as well as to worship or garden with.
He was a whole man. His music in his Beatles, solo, Travelling Wilbury and final days was always about life led on the ground, in the material world, yet not bound by it. It was Harrison who first saw the difference between Haight Ashbury and enlightnement. It was Harrison who realized his tremendous good fortune could be harnessed to work remarkably good things for less fortunate people. He respected what his craft could accomplish and was a selfless, ego-free spirit who could race cars, produce silly movies and prove loyal to family and friends. He was Everyman who had come into good fortune and knew not to take it for granted.
As to the music herein: it is just GREAT! His mates came to this project with great love and respect for their fallen comrade. Ravi and Anoushka Shankar get the project off and running with a couple of sitar pieces and a terrific rendition of "The Inner Light". One is reminded of the start of THE CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH, and its tremendous setting of a tone of consideration. Much the same effect is produced here. It anchors you in the spiritual world that Harrison embraced.
The second side essays his pop work. Wilbury buddy Lynne kicks things off with "I Want To Tell You," and the CD rocks from that point on. The emotional centerpiece is Ringo's "Photograph." Tough to listen to that without getting misty. It is absolutely the best Ringo's ever done that. Paul kicks in with a very bright and emotionally uplifting "Something" that comes from the heart, as well as the uke. He returns with Clapton to blisteringly deliver "While My Guitar," nearly as transcendent as "Bangla Desh's" version. Tom Petty is just the right touch, especially on "Handle With Care," handled with Dhani Harrison, as sure a chip off the old bloke as you might get. Dad must have been beaming! Billy Preston ecstatically revels in "My Sweet Lord," then Clapton burns it up again on "Wah Wah," which was a reference to him anyway, before Joe Brown sends it all off lovingly.
The son of a Catholic busdriver and Nurse in Liverpool who often said he was sure he would never have amounted to anything had it not been for The Beatles, obviously took from his parents a sense of finding a spirituality to guide his life. That he touched so many of his colleagues as all of us as always and forever being the genuine article says all there needs to be said about the importance of living in the material world with a sense of faith.Concert for George Overview

All Things Must Pass ReviewThe original cd release of this album was marred by a muddy and hissy sound that took away from the great music. Finally after years of clamoring from fans, George Harrison has issued a remastered version of his classic All Things Must Pass. The results are outstanding as the songs sound clear and fresh. George Harrison was the Beatle who most immediately benefited from the band's breakup. Mr. Harrison was stifled by the domination of the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership and was only allowed a song or two per album. The songs that did appear, like "Taxman", Here Comes The Sun" & "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", showed that he was an excellent songwriter in his own right. When it came time to record his first proper solo album, he released an album of electronic noise called Wonderwall in 1968, he had such a backlog of material it yielded a double album with a third bonus disk. The songs are deeply rooted in the Maharisi's teachings that have been a large part of his life for the past thirty years. Despite the religious musings, the songs have an upbeat, full sound lead by Wall of Sound producer Phil Spector. Although Mr. Spector does sometimes overproduce songs, he makes a song like "My Sweet Lord" that could have been plodding and ponderous into a soaring affirmation. Of course that song was a huge number one hit, but others standouts include the beautiful cover of Bob Dylan's "If Not For You", the nice tribute to fans who hung outside the Apple Records offices, "Apple Scruffs", the yin and yang of "I Dig Love" and "The Art Of Dying" and the rollicking "Wah-Wah". "What Is Life?" may well be the best song he has ever done with it's blaring horns, layered guitars and smooth vocals. The production is classic Wall of Sound harkening back to Mr. Spector's work on Ronettes and Crystals records. The last few songs are from a jam session that included Eric Clapton and made up the bonus disk on the original release. They loose song structures that the band just have fun with. The bonus tracks included on the re-release don't really add much and the "My Sweet Lord 2000" would have been better left unrecorded. The cd booklet is expansive and contains many insights from Mr. Harrison himself. All Things Must Pass was to many a surprise success as they thought that only Paul McCartney and John Lennon would be successful in their post Beatle days. Not only was "My Sweet Lord" the first solo Beatle song to hit number one, but the album also reached the top of the charts and thirty years later still sounds fresh and exciting.All Things Must Pass OverviewThe most monumental of all the Beatles solo projects-and one of the most critically and commercially successful-George Harrison's All Things Must Pass here receives a complete make-over, with a complete new remastering and five new bonus tracks! NCIS: The Official TV Soundtrack ReviewThe NCIS Soundtrack is not a "score" but rather a collection of songs featured (in part) in episodes of the hit TV series NCIS. Though I bought this double CD set knowing that all the songs featured vocals, I would honestly like to also have a CD of the series score (similar to the BSG soundtracks such as in Battlestar Galactica: Season Two). The first disk does feature an extended version of the theme song for the series (and it is great), and the second disk features a guitar-based industrial cover of the theme by Ministry.
As a fan of industrial, gothic, and dark wave music, I'm more partial to the second disk "Abby's Lab", which features some well known and lesser known g/i (goth / industrial) artists. Ministry's remix of the theme song retains enough of the original that I could make the connection between the two tracks after the second time I listened to the remix. However, I prefer Numeriklab's more techno (original) version.
Though I'm not 100% certain (I'd have to rewatch the DVD), I believe Android Lust's Hole Solution may be been the track that was playing in the background as early as S1. Season one also featured Collide and a few other artists (not included on this compilation disk). An alternative version of Hole Solution can be found on the Dragonfly single. However, like another reviewer I was hoping that the Abby's lab disk would feature more of the background techno-industrial music that Abby Sciuto more frequently listened to in the first two seasons.
My favorite track is Pauley Perrette's "Fear". It took me a second to identify Pauley's voice as Abby (I wasn't looking at the liner notes at the time), but after hearing and falling in love with the song, it is very clear to me that Perrette is a talented musician in addition to being an excellent actress. As you might suspect "Fear" is a gothic rock track that mixes electronics, a fairly steady drum beat, and guitars with Perrette's earthy vocals. I'd compare the track as a meeting of Android Lust (which you can hear on the compilation as well) and Faith and the Muse (in particular I'm thinking of William Faith's guitar work).
Though I prefer Disk 2, "Special Agent" (the first disk) features a number of tracks that I also enjoy. I've listed all the tracks that I've found myself tossing into my iTunes playlist. The bottom line is the price on this disk is well worth the investment!

Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert: A Benefit for the Crossroads... (1999) ReviewI was at the epic length concert on June 30, 1999 (not July 30, as mistakenly written on this site), and I had a wonderful time listening to some of the most incredible guitar playing I'd ever heard. I was overjoyed to hear that a video/DVD of the show would be released, but I was very disappointed with the actual product. The concert lasted over three hours, and Amazon.com notes that the DVD/video is 170 minutes in their review, yet it is only 108 minutes! More than an hour of music has been cut out by the manufacturers, including what I believed to be the highlights of the show. Gone are Eric Clapton's "My Father's Eyes", "Pilgrim", Sheryl Crow's "Run Baby Run", "Leaving Las Vegas", "If It Makes You Happy", and Bob Dylan's "Not Dark Yet", "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat". Gone is the showstopping duet of between Dylan and Clapton of "Born In Time", a song Dylan wrote in 1991 that was covered by Clapton on his most recent album. Instead, what the producers of this DVD and video have put out are solid performanes of songs that have already been released on live albums and videos countless times. Sure, I enjoy hearing "Layla", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Tears In Heaven", "Wonderful Tonight", and "Old Love", but I have them live on other Clapton live releases, and they sound very much the same; I would have rathered to have selections that no other live recording is avaliable of, or even better, the entire concert. DVDs can hold 4-8 hours, so there's no reason why they couldn't have included everything. Also, on the DVD, the producers do not allow the "angle" feature to be used; for those unfamiliar with DVD, this is a feature that allows you to change the camera angle at which you're viewing the picture. It's especially useful in concert videos, because if you want to look at Clapton's guitar solo when they're showing Steve Gadd's drumming, you can - if they encode that feature, which they inexplicably chose not to. What angles they did choose were poorly selected; it's filled with bad framing and inappropriate zooms. It's a shame they didn't, because it was a fantastic concert.Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert: A Benefit for the Crossroads... The Village Sessions ReviewI'm not very objective when it comes to John Mayer, since I love everything he does. However... this CD really blew me away the first time I listened to it. I love Continuum and Try!, but this CD really reminded me how great John is on acoustic guitar. If you're not crazy about anything John has done since Room For Squares, you will probably love this. Not since "Inside Wants Out" have I heard John playing such pure, unadulterated guitar. You can just get lost in imagining his fingers moving over the strings... and it's fun to hear some guitar and vocal variations on the songs contained in Continuum (5 songs) and Try! (1 song); John's voice sounds as smooth as honey. My biggest critique, and this is one I've heard lamented by other John Mayer fans, is that it's only six songs... and it leaves you desperately wanting more more more. At only $1 per song, it's worth it to get this CD though. I wish John would put out a double album with 26 acoustic songs on it... although I love his electric guitar too, he is so amazing on acoustic and it's a great change of pace when you're feeling mellow. My favorite song on Continuum, "Belief," is included on this CD and sounds fantastic. "In Repair" is also fantastic. They all are, actually. "Waiting on the World..." sounds similar, except the background vocals are really different and gives the song a whole new twist.
6/09 Wow! in the two and a half years since I wrote this review, the price has skyrocketed from $5.99 to over $21 !!!! That's outrageous!The Village Sessions OverviewThe ever prolific john mayer delivers 'the village sessions', a 6-song ep that retools favorites from his highly regarded 'continuum' album. With the exception of the ben harper track, the ep was recorded in one day at the village recorder in LA.

The Passion of the Christ: Songs Inspired By ReviewWhen I first saw this CD I thought it was a strange marketing tie-in to Mel Gibson's film "The Passion", but on reading Gibson's liner notes, it becomes clear why this selection of marvelous music was brought together; it is music that has inspired Mr. Gibson, and that in some way is connected to the Passion message. It is an eclectic mix, all performed with first-rate musicianship and creative quality. Some of the tracks have been recently recorded, but some have been around for years.
Some of my favorites:
The sparse beauty and whispered simplicity of Holly Williams singing her grandfather Hank's "How Can You Refuse Him Now" ~
Ricky Scaggs' "Are You Afraid to Die", with an intro by Dr. Billy Graham is poignant and shows the deep and pure roots of country music ~
Jessi Colter & Shooter Jennings with "Please Carry me Home". Two wonderful voices with a heartfelt rendition of their own song ~
Dolores O'Riordan (lead singer of The Cranberries) is astounding with her rendition of "Ave Maria" ~
The Ghost Who Walks with "Harm's Way" is one of the artists on this CD that I had never heard of before, and am grateful for the "discovery" ~
Leonard Cohen's "By the Rivers Dark" is gorgeous...Cohen at his mystical best ~
The Blind Boys of Alabama's "Precious Lord" is soul-stirring with its plaintive, expressive voice and guitar ~
Bob Dylan's powerful "Not Dark Yet" is a fitting finale.
There isn't a single track on this recording that I do not care for...it is a truly great collection, with a slant towards a country-funky style, with overall leisurely tempos and a mellow feeling.
It is a lovely CD on many levels; as a musical spiritual journey, as well as an example of artistic excellence. The only lyrics included are "How Can You Refuse Him Now", sound for the most part is good and total playing time is 51'37.The Passion of the Christ: Songs Inspired By Overview
