The Very Best of Tommy Emmanuel ReviewI first heard Tommy performing on TV a while back. I was blown away. I never heard anyone play acoustic guitar like him...ever! I then heard him live and was just so impressed - what a fresh new way of interpretting the acoustic guitar. No one plays harmonics like Tommy. So I ordered this CD and was devistated from the start. This wasn't the Tommy I knew and loved. It was watered down Tommy and doesn't serve justice to how good he really is. This is why I am being so critial. You will never know his true talent by listening to these CD's. The music is poorly produced and poorly mixed. Much of the time the accompanyment sounds like the main feature with Tommy playing somewhere in the background. In fact, sometimes it sounds like he is playing at the far end of the room, away from everyone else, or even in a differnt room altogether. Tommy's guitar playing is meek, not very expressive and is shrouded in effects. I mean how much reverb does one need. The drums sound like they come from a track machine with reverb. The orchestration is cheesy synthesizer tracks. I am not sure what went wrong here. I am still disspointed whenever I listen to it. Check out Johnny A for an example of how it should really be done. The Very Best of Tommy Emmanuel Overview

Joyland ReviewI discovered Andy on youtube as many did and bought Art of Motion instantly! I recently saw him on tour where he was selling this CD/DVD before they were released and got me a signed copy. It has been great follow up material to his previous stuff. I think the only drawback might be that he has some accompaniment on a few of his songs (cello or drum rhythm) that does add to the overall song, but might take away a little from his solo guitar. What I loved about Art of Motion was listening closely to all the sound that Andy alone could produce from his guitar and adding in another instrument 'muddies' it up a little at times. It is still a good overall end result and shouldn't keep you from picking this one up.
There is also a DVD included where he tells a little about his history and shows you around the guitar shop where he taught guitar lessons. He also plays some of his songs live (not youtube style... very professional). Lastly, he gives some instruction on how to tune and play a few of his songs. He still plays too fast for me as a beginner, but as I improve, I will come back and try to give some of these a shot.
I like that he is just a regular guy with an amazing talent and he remains humble through it all. Keep up the awesome work, Andy!Joyland Overview

Center Stage ReviewI was fortunate enough to hear Tommy Emmanuel live in concert in May of this year (2008). From the opening notes to the last encore, he was one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever heard.
His technical skill is amazing, but he's about more than flash. He plays with a wide range of deep human emotion, and does it all with great wit.
This recording captures the essence of that experience. It's a live concert recording that finds him at his best, showing off his skills, and connecting and communicating with the audience. It may sound like hyperbole, but this recording has rocketed onto my list of my favorite recordings of all time.
If you haven't heard Tommy, this recording is the place to start!Center Stage Overview

Arranging for Solo Guitar: The Queen Titles ReviewIf you've found this page, likely you already know something about the amazing Edgar Cruz - one of the most talented guitarists on the planet! Not only does Edgar tackle four very complex and difficult songs, but he also shows you, step by step, how to play them yourself - if you're good enough to do it. (I hope I am). I was fortunate enough to attend one of Cruz's concerts here in AZ last year. Introducing Bohemian Rhapsody, he said, "I'm going to play the bass line, the lead guitar, rythym guitar, the piano, vocals, and back-up vocals - all on the guitar -live" Impossible? Not for Cruz. It's amazing!Got to meet Cruz after the show too. Nice guy. I was hesitant to spend 4o bucks on a single DVD, but just had to do it. No regrets now. What would it cost to take lessons from one of the best in the world? A lot more than 40 bucks. What would you pay to learn how to do 4 of the most difficult magic tricks from a renowned magician? Well, Cruz is a magician on the guitar. I'm voting 10 starsArranging for Solo Guitar: The Queen Titles OverviewThis award-winning DVD showcases Edgar Cruz's notorious solo guitar arrangement of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Also includes solo fingerstyle renditions of We Are The Champions, Killer Queen and Crazy Little Thing Called Love which are performed and then taught in great detail. Edgar demonstrates the process he uses to distill the essence of these rock classics with all of their familiar harmonies and orchestrations onto a single guitar. He covers all the techniques necessary to execute the difficult passages, and simplified variations are presented to make the arrangements accessible to students of many levels. Beyond the Queen titles, Edgar's unique approach and insight can be applied to literally any song you choose. Multi-angle DVD features streaming musical notation and tab on the alternate video track. Notation and tab is also printable from the disc. All arrangements in standard tuning. "...Edgar Cruz is a wizard. How else can one explain how he captures the sounds of an entire band and reduces them to a single guitar? It's that special gift, skill, magic – whatever you'd like to call it – that has produced such amazing solo guitar performances as Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. If Cruz caught the attention of the guitar playing and listening world with that masterpiece, then that world had better brace itself..." – John Schroeter, Publisher, Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine Winner of two Accolade Awards (best instructional/educational and best editing) as well as a nomination for the 2005 DVD Awards.

Best ReviewThis is my favorite of all of Leo Kottke's albums. I've owned it on vinyl for years and it's the only reason there is still a turntable in my living room. It has an unbelievable live version of "Stealing", followed by a Live version of "Living in the Country" that leaves me speechless. Play them back to back for your guitar playing buddies and watch them turn green.
I am just thankful that I had a friend who brought Leo Kottke to my attention. That friend received a case of scotch for doing so. Hands down my favorite artist of all time, in any category. He's the best there is, and this is him at his finest.Best Overview

Only ReviewWhenever I read reviews, I am made aware we are all different and guitar freaks ( of which I am undoubtedly one ) the world over like different things. Thank God.
But I would wager there is not a single ( open minded ) Guitar freak out there who would not sit back and be humbled by the brilliance of this album, nor one that does not find the outstanding beauty and emotion in this music. I have only just received my copy from Amazon, and I dont think since "Casino" by Al Di Meola there has been an album that has hit my emotions in the same way.
Perfect acoustic guitar playing and( perhaps more importantly ) song writing. Thank you Tommy Emmanuel ... someome below said it ... a masterpiece. Expect more business from me pretty soon !Only Overview2002 release from the native Australian who has 4 Platinum & 3 Gold albums. This is his first solo acoustic album and finally being released internationally on Steve Vai's Newly created Favored Nations Acoustic imprint. HDCD.

Manuel Barrueco plays Lennon & McCartney ReviewAside from the folks who would otherwise waste an opportunity to discuss the worthiness of this album, I fully endorse it as an example of a beautiful combination of excellent playing and superb composing. A good arranger finds the perfect balance between keeping honest to the original music and exploring/exploiting the inherent qualities within it through different means. That's precisely what occurs with this album. You're hard pressed to find better arrangements than the Takemitsu. Leo Brower shows a deft touch for string writing in his arrangements and again his writing for the guitar is spot on. The final two arrangements by Mr. Lubbock are interesting, yet straying further from their original inspiration than the other arrangements, still manage to capture that lovely balance.
There aren't enough accolades to give Maestro Barrueco whose precision and musicianship are nearly unmatched (still a close second to Pepe Romero in my book). An excellent and interesting purchase for guitar, strings, and Beatles lovers alike.Manuel Barrueco plays Lennon & McCartney Overview

Land of Enchantment ReviewThis CD by guitarist Michael Chapdelaine contains some of the most soulful and beautiful original music I've ever heard played on guitar. Ravishing tone and impeccable phrasing.Land of Enchantment OverviewI grew up playing rock music and surfing, and came to classical music at the late age of 18. My girlfriend was heading off to Florida State University to study art, and made it clear that if I wanted to stay with her, I would also become a FSU student. At FSU the only guitar offered then, was classical guitar. So I began a 20 year dedication to the discipline and martyrdom of classical music. I loved it and devoted all of my energy to it.In the mid-90s I found my self totally burned out. I could no longer summon the energy to practice, for the 4 gazillionth time, music written by someone else whose life and thoughts were not my own.. I was listening more and more to pop music and loving the sincerity of musicians who played their own feelings and experiences, rather than interpreting those of others. So I started composing. I shed my classical musician's need for complexity and unpredictability and just wrote what I had to say. The first piece was 2000 Miles from Beth, then Requiem for Geronimo, and before long, it became apparent that I was writing about my life in and impressions in New Mexico, where I live. Land of Enchantment is a musical diary of my attempt to learn my own musical identity (and some other things).mc

LJ Plays The Beatles Vol. 2 ReviewYAY!
After ten years since the release of his popular and brilliant album "LJ Plays The Beatles"Lj Plays the Beatles, Laurence Juber is back with a most fitting follow up to one of the most flawless acoustic albums ever.
"LJ Plays The Beatles Volume 2" is a MUST for any Beatles fan as well as any fan of Juber's incredible musical talents. I can't believe I'm writing this, but this man's musical virtuosity has evolved to a new high - and I didn't think that would be possible since he's definitely the Master of the Acoustic Guitar Domain, and has been for more than a few decades. The album starts out with the lovely and lilty "Penny Lane" and segues into "Elenor Rigby" which though still haunting, has a really cool rhythm behind it, making it more introspective than depressing. "Drive My Car" rocks and Juber's version of "Here, There & Everywhere" is heartfelt and easy to imagine as "the" song used in any wedding ceremony/celebration; just beautiful.
"You Can't Do That" and "I Feel Fine" are expertly interpreted and LJ makes them both his own.
Don't get me started on "Blackbird" which I personally never thought could be improved upon, but by God, when you listen to the nuances LJ brings to this classic (and is there any guitarist who hasn't tried to master this one?!), you hear some very sweet and sublime layers that could only be created by someone as gifted as Juber.
Confession: There are a few Beatles songs that I usually fast forward through given my affinity for the music from their "starting out days" - and "Michelle," "Dear Prudence" and "I Am The Walrus" fall into this category (sorry, lads!) but I am happy to say that LJ's versions of all three of these tunes keep me from skipping over them; all new interpretations and all truly great. They converted me, anyway....
That said, my personal favorites on this album are "I Feel Fine," "All I've Gotta Do," "Please Please Me" and "No Reply" - for my obvious allegiance to the group's early days. But, boy, do I love "When I'm Sixty Four" - it's absolutely contagious in its sweetness and simplicity.
The album "winds" up perfectly with Juber's flawless "The Long and Winding Road" which will bring tears to your eyes. This song means so much to so many and LJ brings heart, soul, and clearly the depth of someone who has traveled many a long and winding road to where he, as a talent and a human being, has arrived as one of our greatest musical artists.
This album is a joy and a pleasure to have on my iTunes and in my car at all times.
Whenever one of these tunes pops up on my iPod Shuffle, it brings a smile.
Thanks, LJ, for yet another gem.

Pop Goes Guitar ReviewI agree with the strangely negative review ..I say strange because the only real gripe the review has is that he or she wishes there was more than only 12 tracks...so why only 2 stars for an album they haven't listened to and want more of?
Well I am a happy owner and this is a beautiful CD. Being a guitarist I have admired Mr Juber for years but this is the kind of thing my girlfriend actually allows me to play because it features songs we all know and very interestingly arranged for solo guitar. This CD isn't a BEST OF as the other review claims but matches a book (that amazon.com sells) of all the arrangements and they aren't easy but worthwhile to try if you have been playing for a few years at least.
Back to the CD...the sound is very intimate and clear...and the arrangements are truly unique. God Only Knows rivals his great arrangement of Strawberry Fields from his classic LJ Plays The Beatles cd. The real gem for me is the almost classical arrangement of that beautiful ballad by Elvis Costello ALLISON.
If you are a guitarist I'd recommend this and the book , if you just love great music this is for you and if you always thought instrumental versions of pop songs are the domain of smooth Jazz ....give this a try and you will be hooked. I also recommend his treatment of Harold Arlen songs, One Wing and his most recent CD P.C.H. which may be my all time favorite Juber CD.
UPDATE: I need to answer a question swirling around the net...YES, this version of STAND BY ME on this cd ...is the one currently heard on the national DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER holiday televsion commercial...its a great arrangement!Pop Goes Guitar OverviewThe CD ,POP goes Guitar, is a collection of arrangements of love songs....a couple previously available on the best selling LJ Plays the Beatles and One Wing but most newly arranged and recorded by two-time GRAMMY winner Laurence Juber. LJ not only created this recording for listening pleasure but to coincide with the book Popular Songs for Acoustic Guitar (Hal Leonard) that allows guitarists to try their hand or hands at these challenging and beautiful versions of classic love songs.

Passion Session ReviewPunchy or melodic, Celtic, or (?), this guy does it all; and blends techniques like no one I've ever heard. Amazing right- and left-hand work, timing, and musical sensability. This guy can play with anybody. He summons many of the same sounds from his guitar as the late Michael Hedges, though he developed them independently, more or less at the same time as Michael did. But, it's all part of the music. Like he says: Heavy Wood.
The simple production style really works. The recording is wonderful and nothing gets between you and the music.
I was just introduced to Don Ross's music two weeks ago from a friend's friend in Vancouver, BC. It sure is hard for Canadians to get exposure in the US. I've been listening to "new acoustic music" for 20 years and I had never heard of him.

The Gospel Guitar of Rev. Gary Davis ReviewAnother classic from Ernie Hawkins on Rev. Gary Davis.
Not everyone knows the music of Gary Davis, but if you are a fan of the Rev. Gary Davis, or if you are just a fan of the blues and would love to learn some very unique songs and fingerstyle play, this is a terrific opportunity to spend many hours with a master player and teacher.
Hawkins is a gifted teacher who is an expert on the music of Rev. Gary Davis, including many of the lesser known songs. This collection has some wonderful songs not normally known by many; the early religious songs of Gary Davis.
Hawkins is a low key, patient teacher, who like all skilled teachers, is able to anticipate where his student will struggle. For this reason, he will slow down at certain points, repeat himself, and bring the student along with great skill.
For the intermediate guitarist, or for the high drive late beginner, this DVD set equals months of great lessons at an incredible value. Ernie Hawkins also taught the terrific C-A-G-E-D series, helping the student learn the fret board, which is here at Amazon.
This is a very generous teaching, and this will provide the student with many months of "private lessons" which would be impossible to afford, should you be able to land one of the country's top teachers for private lessons.
Plan to spend an hour a week or more with the DVD, using the Pause button often, and learn these terrific songs.
Primarly for the Intermediate guitarist (or early Advanced), someone who is late in the Beginner stage who has the drive to push forward, will benefit greatly from Hawkins' teaching.
See Ernie Hawkins' other DVDs for more excellent acoustic blues lessons.
Between his slow, methodical teaching, his easy going personality, terrific selection of songs, and skilled camera work, you are purchasing months of "personal" lessons with one of our country's best teachers of acoustic guitar. The Gospel Guitar of Rev. Gary Davis OverviewRev. Gary Davis was a musical genius. His music and guitar playing spanned a century of different techniques, styles and ideas and touched on so many musical formats, i.e. blues, ragtime, folk, gospel, marching songs and tin pan alley hits. In this series of four lessons, Ernie Hawkins teaches fourteen of Rev. Davis's most requested and famous gospel guitar arrangements. Rare footage of Rev. Davis playing many of the tunes taught in this collection is featured. Ernie gives you a detailed rundown of each arrangement, analyzing the structure and timing of each phrase, verse and chorus and then replaying everything slower on a split screen with close-ups of both hands. A comprehensive 80 page tab/music booklet is included. All in all, almost six hours of instruction is presented. Lesson One: Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning, Samson and Delilah (If I Had My Way). Running time: 82 minutesLesson Two: Children of Zion, Oh Glory How Happy I Am, I Belong To The Band, Goin' To Sit Down On The Banks Of The River. Running time: 92 minutesLesson Three: Death Don't Have No Mercy, Twelve Gates To The City, Let Us Get Together, Right Now. Running time: 93 minutesLesson Four: I Heard The Angels Singing, Crucifixion, I Am The Light Of This World, You Got To Move. Running time: 87 minutesDownload tab/music booklet in pdf format here.

a Guitar for Elvis ReviewMusic lovers across the board will want Elvis in their house with this CD. Are you ready to be swept up and dropped into a different space with each awesome and unique arrangement of these Elvis classics? This CD will take you everywhere. Starting out with pure fun from Pat Donohue on "All Shook Up" and moving into the first of two tunes by Al Petteway. Al never fails to please and will have you loving "Mystery Train" and a version of "Hound Dog" that will have you up and out of your seat! You want amazing melodies....when you hear Doug Smith play "Can't Help Falling in Love" he will have you absolutely wrapped up in his version of this classic. Of all the thousands of times this song has been covered, don't be surprised to find this your favorite, even without the lyrics!! Other wonderful melodic tunes include "Love Me Tender", beautifully done by Brooks Williams and "Are You Lonesome Tonight", with a folksy little feel from Jim Tozier. What's not to love about Laurence Juber and his amazing fingerstyle? Check out his always pleasing grooves on "Suspicious Minds", a definite highlight of the CD. There are fantastic takes on "Don't" by Tim Pacheco, "Loving You" by Elliot Easton, and Mike Dowling moves on "Little Sister"! The famous classical guitarist, Benjamin Verdery will surprise and delight you with a very unclassical version of "Don't Be Cruel". By the time this CD is nearing the end, you will be up and dancing around when you hear "Jailhouse Rock" by ace fingerpicker Eltjo Haselhoff and the best saved for last....the dynamic duo of Doug Smith and Mark Hanson will have you soaring and singing "Viva Las Vegas"!! By time this CD is over you'll want to start it right up again!! So much fun. James Jensen of Solid Air Records and Acoustic Music Resource have done it again with one of the best yet special compilation projects. Thanks guys!!a Guitar for Elvis Overview

Exploring The Guitar With Keb' Mo'-Songs and Arrangements to Enrich Your Playing ReviewI discovered Keb' Mo' just a few weeks ago - I really enjoy his music, especially his solo acoustic performances, so I figured I'd give this DVD a try. I'm so glad that I did! On this video, Keb' Mo' teaches you seven of his songs, in a very relaxed, non-intimidating manner. He comes accross as a very happy, laid-back kind of guy, and assures you that with practice, these songs aren't very difficult to learn. He performs each song for you, then breaks each one down into lesson "sections", that will have you playing (and probably singing, you can't help it) them in no time. He also includes some fingerpicking excersises to help develop your picking hand dexterity. I'd say that this video is for "intermediate" players, as fingerpicking style can be difficult for beginners, but some of these songs are suprisingly simple to play. I've owned the video for 2 weeks now, and am just getting through the 3rd song, so it has kept me challenged and busy, which I like. I've also learned several new chords as a result. The video also comes with a booklet of tablature for each song, so that you can practice without the video if you like. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys solo acoustic fingerstyle blues guitar - you won't be dissapointed! Well worth the money!Exploring The Guitar With Keb' Mo'-Songs and Arrangements to Enrich Your Playing Overview

Aspen Glow, Christmas for Cowboys, This Old Guitar, I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado, Mother Nature's Son, Rhymes and Reasons, and Take Me Home, Country Roads. Pete generally gives some interesting background on the songs and walks you through the chords and strums or picking patterns. Split screen shots show you right and left hand techniques. You may appreciate his singing, not because he sings well but because he does not sing all that well. If he is brave enough to sing, then you should be inspired to sing as well. ;)Learn to Play the Songs of John Denver DVD#2 Overview
