Sweet Tea Review"Sweet Tea" is fast being heralded as Buddy's best CD ever. For example, the liner notes proclaim that Buddy "may have made the album of his life".
There is no doubt that Buddy pours his heart and soul into this recording. However, no musician, with the possible exception of Linda Ronstadt, wants to have a cover CD credited as "the album of his life".
Unlike Buddy's earlier CD's, "Damn Right, I've Got The Blues", "Feels Like Rain" and "Slippin' In", which all contain several Guy originals, "Sweet Tea" is a tribute CD to several of the North Mississippi Hills musicians such as, the late Junior Kimbrough, Lowell Fulsom & T-Model Ford who record(ed) for Fat Possum records. In fact, all but two of the songs are covers of these men.
The dark, brooding, often hauting and hypnotic beat of the original tunes is left intact on this CD. However, what Buddy brings to the mix is his exceptional guitar solos that are otherwise absent on the originals. Make no mistake about it, Guy's playing on the CD is exceptional and is the best he has played in a long time. If you want to hear something a little different from Buddy Guy, this is your CD.
On the other hand, I think the impoverished and often over looked Mississippi Hills musicians should be given their due as well. So, if you like this CD I would urge you to strongly consider RL Burnside's "Wish I Were In Heaven", Junior Kimbrough's "All Night Long", T-Model Ford's "She Ain't None of Your'n, Jessie Mae Hemphill's "Feelin Good" or Robert Belfour's "What's Wrong With You" all are excellent, recent CD's worth a listen.Sweet Tea OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: GUY,BUDDYTitle: SWEET TEAStreet Release Date: 05/15/2001

Showdown ReviewIt's nothing short of awesome to hear these three guitar greats come together. Albert Collins was one of the BEST blues guitarists in the world. Any recording which features him is going to be worthwhile. Robert Cray is very good too and has a wonderful voice. Johnny Copeland contributes some nice vocals and guitar licks, but I'm not as familiar with him as I am Albert and Robert. There are only two downsides to this wonderful CD. First, the sound quality isn't as good as it could be. It definitely sounds its age. I know that Alligator is not a huge record label, but it would be nice if they could remaster and rerelease some of their titles such as this one. Second drawback is that the album is too short! It's so good that you don't want it to end. It's not much longer than half an hour. But it is good stuff. If you like guitar-based blues, BUY this CD!Showdown OverviewAlligator's Grammy-winning, best-selling title of all time (which has sold over 285,000 units), remastered on CD with the added bonus track "Something To Remember You By". Universally recognized as one of the greatest blues albums of all time. A celebrated studio "cutting contest" between three legendary blues guitarists. Albert and Johnny are sadly no longer with us, but Robert Cray continues to record and tour, and is one of the best-selling blues artists in history with over 2.3 million career units scanned.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Greatest Hits ReviewGary Allan is one of those rare artists who has gained commercial AND critical success, yet continues to be snubbed at the awards shows. His previous album, TOUGH ALL OVER (written and recorded shortly after his wife's suicide) was one of the most emotional, powerful albums ever released--in any genre. He has continuously released high-quality music; no cookie-cutter country for this California boy. He's one of the most recognizable singers currently in the genre; he's an impressive songwriter (although he doesn't write much); his guitar chops are to be reckoned with (see him live if you doubt it).
So basically, it's about damn time he released a "greatest hits." And great they are. From modern classics such as "Smoke Rings in the Dark" and "Life Ain't Always Beautiful," to the rockers "Right Where I Need to Be" and "Man of Me," to the tenderness of "Tough Little Boys" and "Her Man"...Gary Allan can do it all. The new songs fit right in here--"A Feelin' Like That" is a rollickin' number about getting over a loved one (or failing to do so); "As The Crow Flies" is simply a great rocker ("like a blackbird, baby, you were born with wings") that fits Allan's voice and style to a "T".
GREATEST HITS is possibly the best Gary Allan record to date, as it collects some of his absolute best material together in one package. I still highly reccommend you go out and purchase his individual albums, though--Allan has been crafting powerful, engaging country/rock/honky-tonk since the mid-nineties. Because of that, GREATEST HITS is more than a sum of its parts--it is a great country record, easily one of the best to be released this year.Greatest Hits Overview

Blow By Blow ReviewI've been a professional guitarist and music teacher for over two and a half decades. I listen to guitar music day in and day out, ranging in style from Luis de Milan (1536) to Leo Brouwer and Alan Holdsworth. It isn't difficult to observe that almost all music that has survived the test of time has had something valid to say: some of it expresses well the particular fashion/taste of the period; some successfully pushes the existing musical boundaries; and some is just uniquely personal to its creator.
As a musician Jeff Beck belongs mostly within the last of the preceding three groups. Examination of his output suggests it would be hard to argue that he created any new genre, but whenever he experimented in a new field he always sounded unmistakably true to his own unique musical identity. I also believe that a creative performing musician can receive no greater compliment.
The hallmark of Beck's style is melodic fearlessness. This boldness sets him apart musically from perhaps 'superior' technical and 'harmonically informed' peers, especially those of the so-called 'improvisational' based jazz scene. Beck's playing is instantly recognisable and is almost devoid of cliche. Jeff Beck only ever sounds like Jeff Beck. On the occassion that he ever employs a tired phrase of (say) Chuck Berry's, it is in such a manner or in such a place as to turn it on its head or throw new light upon it.
To those wondering whether to add this CD to their collection I recommend that you bear in mind Duke Ellington's words - "There are only two kinds of music: good music and bad music", because this CD belongs unquestionably to the first category. All instrumental, it contains a variety of styles - including ballad, reggae, funk, and rock - read the other reviews for the details. And finally, please don't ever pretend to have any inkling of what Jeff Beck is about, or what he is capable of, without being familiar with this particular album.Blow By Blow OverviewBlow by Blow served as a new creative peak for Beck and is, to date, his most commercially successful release. Offering a one-two punch of ingenious production and imaginative soloing, the wonderfully unpredictable guitar genius meshes stinging jazz-rock with string arrangements and energetic rhythm for You Know What I Mean; Constipated Duck; Air Blower; Scatterbrain ; Stevie Wonder's Cause We've Ended as Lovers; Thelonius; Freeway Jam; Diamond Dust , and a clever arrangement of Lennon and McCartney's She's a Woman .

The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac ReviewPretty much the only unfortunate side-effect of the massive artistic and commercial success the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era of Fleetwood Mac was the obscuring shadow it cast upon the earlier eras of the band. No one has even attempted to compile the greatest moments from the early Seventies version of the band, and while blues lovers have revived interest in the original Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac, it has still been impossible for the non-obsessive completist to find a convenient single-disc introduction into this wonderful, formative era of the band. A large part of that was due to label-hopping and rights issues: the Peter Green era spreads over three different record labels, and while the "strictly blues ma'am" Blue Horizon material was the often tossed onto cheapie compilations, the more pivotal Immediate and Reprise cuts remained out in the cold.
Finally - FINALLY - this set rights all those wrongs, and presents the novice with an almost flawless, complete view of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. EVERY important recording, every important aspect, of the early Fleetwood Mac is included here.
What does that actually mean? Well, this set includes the best cuts from their first self-titled album (giving equal time to both Green and the Elmore James-obsessed Jeremy Spencer with "My Heart Beat Like A Hammer," "Shake Your Moneymaker," and "Looking For Somebody"), as well as highlights from the disappointing follow-up Mr. Wonderful ("Stop Messin' Round," "Rollin' Man"). Almost all of the band's Blue Horizon singles are here: "I Believe My Time Ain't Long" is missing, but "Need Your Love So Bad," "Black Magic Woman," and the #1 UK instrumental hit "Albatross" are all present and accounted for.
However, what makes this collection unique is that finally we have a CD that goes on from that point and collects the groundbreaking post-Blue Horizon work: "Man Of The World," "Oh Well" (both parts), and "The Green Manalishi" are finally put together with the early Green-era blues stuff to give you complete view of what this band was doing in 1969. Even better, the compilers of this album decided to bite the bullet and pay Reprise records for the rights to use "Rattlesnake Shake," the key track off the band's one obligatory Green-era album Then Play On. (My only criticism is that I would have preferred more from Then Play On, e.g. "Show-Biz Blues," "Before The Beginning," or "Underway," but I'm in a forgiving mood.)
Finally, a huge bonus that hardcore fans will appreciate is the inclusion of the obscure 1971 single "Dragonfly." Technically it postdates Green's departure from the band, but he's always had high praise for it and it has heretofore been utterly unavailable on CD. All praise to the compilers for hunting it down and including it.
Anyway, for all the reasons mentioned above, THIS is where you start to learn about early Fleetwood Mac. Some Green-era fans may quibble about the absence of a particular favorite - "Love That Burns" is one that many devotees will miss, and as I said above I would have liked "Show-Biz Blues" to be included - but the all the critical high points are here. After years of frustratingly incomplete "greatest hits," somebody took the time to get it right. The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac Overview

Joe Bonamassa Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2009) ReviewWatching this DVD, the same feeling kept washing over me, song after song. It was a feeling of intense pride. I've been witness to the ever expanding vision and hard work Joe Bonamassa has put into his music. No artist over the last decade has captivated me quite like Joe has. Each new release adds yet another layer. And he never makes us wait too long for the next chapter. I've been fortunate to see Joe perform live several times in a variety of venues. Then came RAH.
It's the biggest show of Joe's life and he most certainly is up for the occasion. The venue is magnificent. The crowd is completely engaged. The band is as tight as Bogie's snare. And Joe is on fire. Having everything come together after 20 years has obvious special meaning to Joe. But watching this document of what he has accomplished in my 6+ years as a Joe Bonamassa fan holds special meaning to me as well. I've been an avid record collector and concert goer for over 30 years. In that time, I've never felt more proud to be a fan than I felt while watching this DVD.
For the technical minded, you have the choice of 3 audio streams, Dolby stereo, Dolby 5.1 surround, Dolby DTS surround. The intro sequence really builds up and sets the stage for the show. Camera work is great and features not only well chosen shots of the artists, but within the context of an historic venue. Edits/cuts/changes are appropriately restrained. What may be most surprising of all is that they chose to not overly compress the video and cram it all on one disc. 230 minutes are spread across two discs. This is how a music DVD should be!
After having watched this DVD a few times now, I'd like to add a little more about the performance itself:
- Joe translates live far, far better than most artists. In my opinion, Joe is a brilliant live artist who happens to make great studio records too. I can't decide if Joe's greatest strength is his phenomenal guitar playing or his amazing voice. Both are simply incredible on this DVD.
- I love what Carmine has added to the band over the last couple of years. He brings a flowing musicality that perfectly complements rather than competes with Joe. He is a talented veteran and it shows. The Buddah statue is kinda cool too.
- I was a little nervous when Joe made keyboards a permanent part of the band. I listen to guitar based music to hear . . . the guitar. But Rick is one crafty son of a gun. He doubles Joe's guitar harmonies, adds mood and texture to the background, and does some very nice vocal harmonies on several songs. He steps out here and there with some tasty piano parts that are quite enjoyable. Rick has been a GREAT addition to the band.
- Anyone who thinks the 2 drummer concept is gimicky needs to see this DVD. Watching Bogie and Anton synchronize with each other was quite interesting. It made me pay more attention to the drumming than I usually do, and gave me new found respect for the power and complexity that the drums add to Joe's music.
- Oops. I almost forgot about the horn section. It reminded me how much I enjoyed the early 90's Gary Moore tours that included the Midnight Horns. Here they are used with restraint so as not to crowd the songs which were generally not written with horn parts. The sax solo during Asking Around For You is expecially nice.
Great music DVDs need to complement the music with compelling visuals. There are probably few scenes in the 200+ music DVDs I own that are as dramatic as when Joe climbs up on stage equipment and hoists the Flying V over his head at the conclusion of Just Got Paid with the camera shooting from behind him at floor level. It gives me goose bumps every time I see it.Joe Bonamassa Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2009) Overview

Land of Enchantment ReviewThis CD by guitarist Michael Chapdelaine contains some of the most soulful and beautiful original music I've ever heard played on guitar. Ravishing tone and impeccable phrasing.Land of Enchantment OverviewI grew up playing rock music and surfing, and came to classical music at the late age of 18. My girlfriend was heading off to Florida State University to study art, and made it clear that if I wanted to stay with her, I would also become a FSU student. At FSU the only guitar offered then, was classical guitar. So I began a 20 year dedication to the discipline and martyrdom of classical music. I loved it and devoted all of my energy to it.In the mid-90s I found my self totally burned out. I could no longer summon the energy to practice, for the 4 gazillionth time, music written by someone else whose life and thoughts were not my own.. I was listening more and more to pop music and loving the sincerity of musicians who played their own feelings and experiences, rather than interpreting those of others. So I started composing. I shed my classical musician's need for complexity and unpredictability and just wrote what I had to say. The first piece was 2000 Miles from Beth, then Requiem for Geronimo, and before long, it became apparent that I was writing about my life in and impressions in New Mexico, where I live. Land of Enchantment is a musical diary of my attempt to learn my own musical identity (and some other things).mc

6 String Theory ReviewEveryone needs a few CDs in their arsenal to use as, "Show Off" recordings for their car audio system or home stereo. This is one of them. The mix, clarity and production of this CD is outstanding. Crank it up!
The music is great too. I became a fan of Lee Ritenor after picking up his "Wesbound" CD on which he pays tribute to Wes Montgomery. But make no mistake, this is NOT a smooth jazz recording. It's a mix of blues, jazz, fusion, rock and even classical. There's something here for everyone.
I HIGHLY recommend this record!6 String Theory Overview

The Song Within ReviewEveryone who knows about Phil Keaggy's playing recognizes his virtuosity. "The Song Within," an instrumental recording designed to showcase the rich sound of McPherson acoustic guitars, demonstrates not only Keaggy's virtuosity but also his amazing musicianship. His ability to create and recreate his own music with unpretending excellence is what make this CD so enjoyable.
The moods are mostly mellow but also include a funky jam (Early One Day), a few upbeat tunes (Wow's the Weather, The Blue Trail, Addison's Talk), a little ragtime (Water Day), a couple short ditty's (Trailwalker, McPhernought), and my personal favorite, the catchy and haunting Noah's Shuffle.
"The Song Within" is not going to be Keaggy's most critically acclaimed recording, but it is delightful and a very worthy addition to his remarkable catalogue of instrumental acoustic guitar recordings. The Song Within Overview

Rock Guitar Heroics ReviewI have been playing guitar for over 20 years and Marcus Henderson is one of the best instructors I have come across. Many video instructors (especially celebrity instructors) can be condescending and cocky in their approach to instruction, however, Marcus is neither. While it is clear that he has a robust knowledge of the instrument and theory, his approach to instruction is friendly and encouraging. He is a fantastic communicator and explains things in a clear and concise manner. Marcus also excels at making challenging concepts easy to understand. One feels like Marcus is really interested in the success of the student. He also has a great sense of humor which makes the lessons even more enjoyable.
Marcus focuses on Theory, Technique, Attitude, Improving your playing, and enjoyment of the process. His discussion of Warm Up's is often overlooked and an extremely important. I felt as if Marcus was in the room with me helping me to improve my playing and had a vested interest in my success. While the DVD is geared towards the intermediate player, beginners and advanced players can benefit from his approach as well. Marcus does a great job of teaching methods to develop your own practice exercises. His lessons cover the topic while encouraging the student to expand upon the topic.
The format of the DVD is broken down by 7-8 minute lessons and a bonus tuning section. The lessons are presented clearly with slow and fast demonstrations that include guitar tab, making it easy to follow. Each 7-8 minute lesson is akin to a 30 minute face to face lesson with a live instructor, making the DVD perfect for a in home weekly lesson. The advantage is that you can always go back and re-watch an old lesson to brush up or catch something you may have missed initially.
The lessons are:
1. Warm Up
2. Finger Independence
3. Rock Guitar Techniques
4. Legato and Speed Devices
5. Tremolo Picking and Increasing Pick Speed
6. Hyper Blooz
7. Whammy Class
8. Tapping Class
8. Advanced Solo Techniques
10. Zen and the Art of Shredding
In Summary, Marcus is a outstanding instructor with a very personable approach that makes learning fun. The DVD is formatted very well. The material is very helpful and easy to understand at all levels and will improve your playing. The material is presented in a way that is useful to all skill levels.
DVD instruction videos do not get better than Rock Guitar Heroics.Rock Guitar Heroics Overview

Play ReviewLet me first start off by saying that this CD is not for everyone - especially those who are looking for a typical Brad Paisley "Time Well Wasted" type album. "Play" has only four songs that have vocals on them, which makes it pretty much a bluegrass/instrumental album. Very well done, but very non-traditional and not "cookie cutter" radio ready country music. It's a big gamble, and a lot of people are not gonna be happy about it.
That being said - wow, can this guy play the strings! Listen to him tear them up on the first two tracks "Huckleberry Jam", and "Turf's Up".There are also some mellow instrumental tunes such as "Kim", which is one of my personal favorites. The album is a little similar to Union Station and Nickel Creek type guitar play. Different stuff - and you really have to hear it for yourself to decide if it's for you or not.
Overall, I find it very interesting and ironic that two of country music's biggest stars (kenny chesney and brad paisley) both come out with non-traditional country albums within a month of each other. Kenny with his island style, and now Brad with his guitar play. Maybe this will shake up the music industry a little bit, and open the door to a wider range of new music coming into the genre.Play Overview

Sufferin Mind ReviewEddie "Guitar Slim" Jones is probably the most influential New Orleans blues artists ever. This generous anthology collects 26 tracks from his 1953-56 tenure at Specialty (before leaving for Atco). The album kicks off with his 1953 No. 1 "The Things I Used To Do" and hits all the highlights from the period, including "Story of My Life," "Sufferin' Mind" and "Something To Remember You By." [Note: The 1953 recordings (tracks 1-4) include Ray Charles as pianist and arranger.] If you're going to own only one Guitar Slim album, this is the one to get. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDSufferin Mind OverviewEddie "Guitar Slim" Jones was a brilliant New Orleans singer and guitarist whose vocal and guitar styles were a big influence on other blues performers. Guitar Lessons: Learning Guitar Step 1 - How to play guitar instructional video (2005) ReviewI just picked this dvd up for my son who wanted to learn how to play guitar
I liked this dvd better than another one we bought him because this one is geared for beginners who are just starting on the guitar and the last tape we got seemed to rush through the exercises to fast and would probably be better for an intermediate player
I also liked the on screen chord chart that he can sit and go through on his own pace until he understands the fingerings a little better.
I can also go to their site and download and print out every thing the instructor talked about in the lessons.
If you are someone or know someone looking to learn the guitar and have little or no previous training, I would recommend this dvd.
