In Session ReviewRarely does an album get released where teacher and student aren't too shy to cut loose. I didn't have high expectations for this one but this release is clearly an an exception to the rule. AK and SRV are having a great time and while SRV is in awe of the master bluesman he doesn't take the back seat on this one because around Albert, that WOULD be disrespectful. AK and SRV go at it with great respect for each other and the music. The result is a firey session that is sure to satisfy every fan of these two artists. SRV is clearly the only guitar player to copy AK's licks perfectly and it is a real treat to hear them together. The CD is peppered with dialogue between to two and AK acknowledges SRV as the future of blues as if to pass the torch. But the music is the meat here and it is wonderful. Recording quality is very good and the disc is about 60 minutes in length. If you are an Albert King and/or an SRV fan this one will be on the top of your favorites list for a long time.In Session OverviewOriginally recorded for Canadian television. The two bluesg uitar legends jam on 'Stormy Monday', 'Don't lie To Me'and 'Pride and Joy'. 1999 release. Standard jewel case.

Suitcase ReviewKeb' Mo' continues to please the listener with a diverse variety of smooth blues. The album's focus is on love and relationships. A must have for any Keb' Mo' fan. Mo' stays true to his own version of the blues and it pays off. One of his best to date.
Lyrics that we can all relate to, well delivered vocals and a great production makes this album one you can just listen to over and over without having to skip a single track. Mo' is keeping blues relevant by keeping up with the times, his lyrics reflect his life experiences as did the lyrics of bluesman of the past. Thank you Keb' Mo'.Suitcase OverviewSuitcase is the highly anticipated new studio album from threetime Grammy award winning artist Keb' Mo.Produced by Keb' Mo and long time collaborator John Porter (B.B. King, Los Lonely Boys, Santana), Suitcase is Keb's first album of original music since 2004's Grammy winning release, Keep It Simple.Keb' Mo will be touring all summer and performing songs off of Suitcase on a nationwide tour with Bonnie Raitt.

Couldn't Stand the Weather (Legacy Edition) ReviewTwo discs 79, 75 minutes each approximately. The digitally remastered sound is crisp and clean. The 24 page booklet goes into some depth on SRV and his music. Comments from his rhythm section (DOUBLE TROUBLE) give added depth, along with an overview by a knowledgeable writer from Guitar World. There are also photos of SRV and a 2 page spread of various advertising items to promote the album-a nice touch.
First I must confess that for me, this (original) album still stands as possibly Stevie Ray Vaughan's finest release. While valid arguments could be made for other albums, this set of songs gets to the heart of who Vaughan was. Blessed with a ragged, worn sounding voice and large hands, when Vaughan sang you knew he wasn't kidding. But its when he wrapped that big hand around the neck of his guitar that you knew he was the real deal when it came to the blues. The music was intense, and just seemed to pour out of him ("The Things That I used To Do") in a desperate, pleading torrent of sound. Yet he was capable of playing Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell/Joe Pass jazz-like passages ("Stang's Swang"), intense guitar driven instrumentals ("Scuttle Buttin'"-which has its origins from the great guitarist Lonnie Mack, "Wham!"-a Lonnie Mack composition, and Freddie King's "Hide Away"), and moody songs ("Lenny"), which show how sensitive and mature his playing could be. This album is proof that SRV was a truly multi-faceted musician. and could (and would) take his music wherever it suited him.
The first disc, which includes the original album, also contains a number of tracks (8) that have been previously released on other albums. Is this another example of a record company padding out an already fine album with tracks we're all familiar with? Perhaps. Or is it an attempt to give, in one package, a better picture of just who SRV was? Whether you decide to purchase this for the live disc and the remastered original album, which includes 3 previously unreleased tracks (along with the 8 previously released songs) is something every listener will have to decide for themselves. While I don't like padding an already fine album with tracks I own elsewhere, their inclusion does help paint a better picture of Vaughan's music at this stage. The 3 unreleased studio tracks, "The Sky Is Crying" (an awesome trio version), "Boot Hill", and an alternate of "Stang's Swang" (a trio version different from the original), are welcome additions for those (like me) who can't get enough of SRV during this period.
The second disc, live from 1984 (when the original album was released), is, in a nut shell, full of the guitar work that Vaughan is revered for. Its also where the rhythm section (DOUBLE TROUBLE) proves how valuable they were to Vaughan's sound. In this live context Chris Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon (bass) play intuitively as equals, not just backing musicians for Vaughan's guitar. His combination lead/rhythm style, his crying, pleading, bent notes, his hurt-sounding sustain, and his searing single notes that sound as if they could pierce you like a knife-point are all over this disc. From slow blues ("Tin Pan Alley"), to shuffles ("Love Struck Baby"), to fiery guitar pyrotechnics ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return"), Vaughan's command of his guitar (and the blues) is evident. Tracks like Guitar Slim's "The Things That I Use To Do" (whose original 1950's version is smokin'), "Texas Flood" (by the late Larry Davis-a good blues singer/guitarist) and "Couldn't Stand The Weather" help show SRV as one of the best blues players from the modern era. Add some uptempo tracks along with a bit of funk and you have a complete picture of just who Stevie Ray Vaughan was, and what his music was all about.
So, if you can get past the already released tracks, and think of them as completing a better picture of SRV, this updated release, along with the live second disc is certainly worth purchasing. Sony Records has certainly priced this set at a fair (low) price, which is added incentive. For anyone who likes modern era blues guitar-look no further.Couldn't Stand the Weather (Legacy Edition) Overview

You & Me ReviewThe new album of Joe Bonamassa is very good however, just to point it out from the very beginning, it is not as good as his previous two. In my opinion it remains a couple of steps behind the absolutely marvellous Blues Deluxe and the following Had To Cry Today. Joe, as he explains in the linear notes, wanted to do a blues album this time, and he takes inspiration once again mainly from the sound of the 1970 British blues school. The sound of the album waves from the opening delta blues style of a solid cover of an old Charlie Patton's song, to a couple of Chicago blues, from an acoustic country blues to a jazz tune. Best song of the album is the cover of the classic So Many Roads however as in Tea For One, taken from the Zeppelin repertoire, and in Asking Around For You the use of electronic strings instead of maybe a nice carpet of B3 doesn't do for me. A special mention is deserved by the 12 year-old LD Miller who plays a nice harmonica solo in Your Funeral And My Trial, really very good. Having said that Joe's playing is once again fantastic throughout the entire CD and the band very solid, in my opinion he has also improved his singing. I am looking forward to having the chance to see him playing live in London next September and I am sure that the live version of many of the songs included in his new album will be excellent! You & Me OverviewYou And Me (featuring Jason Bonham on drums) marks the debut collaboration of Bonamassa and producer Kevin Shirley and is a powerful fusion of big rock and swampy blues, You And Me gets much of its inspiration from such masters as Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker. Bonamassa delivers all the excitement and power of his electrifying live performances while mixing it up with dynamic music choices; from hard to soft, electric to acoustic, a music roller coaster - and just as fun!

On The Jimmy Reed Highway ReviewAs a Jimmy Vaughan fan, I love his understated style. His clear and subtle style of playing is a joy, allowing the listener to enjoy the song without being overwhelmed by one guy's playing. Well suited to collective efforts like this.
I had never listened to Omar Dykes until now, but the man has great range. On some songs his growl reminds me of Howlin' Wolf, and on others he becomes more melodic. A perfect complement to Jimmy Vaughan.
Add to those two the contributions of Kim Wilson and James Cotton on harp, Lou Ann Barton on vocals, and it is a great blend of talent. And the Jimmy Reed music is the perfect place for the group to play around in. It sounds as if the group was really having fun while making this. It makes me smile while listening.
I liked every track on this CD, which is rare for me- usually I find at least a couple duds. This CD is phenomenal, and a perfect play for the deck on a nice summer night with a cold beverage, watching the sun go down. A classic effort.

Showdown ReviewIt's nothing short of awesome to hear these three guitar greats come together. Albert Collins was one of the BEST blues guitarists in the world. Any recording which features him is going to be worthwhile. Robert Cray is very good too and has a wonderful voice. Johnny Copeland contributes some nice vocals and guitar licks, but I'm not as familiar with him as I am Albert and Robert. There are only two downsides to this wonderful CD. First, the sound quality isn't as good as it could be. It definitely sounds its age. I know that Alligator is not a huge record label, but it would be nice if they could remaster and rerelease some of their titles such as this one. Second drawback is that the album is too short! It's so good that you don't want it to end. It's not much longer than half an hour. But it is good stuff. If you like guitar-based blues, BUY this CD!Showdown OverviewAlligator's Grammy-winning, best-selling title of all time (which has sold over 285,000 units), remastered on CD with the added bonus track "Something To Remember You By". Universally recognized as one of the greatest blues albums of all time. A celebrated studio "cutting contest" between three legendary blues guitarists. Albert and Johnny are sadly no longer with us, but Robert Cray continues to record and tour, and is one of the best-selling blues artists in history with over 2.3 million career units scanned.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Sloe Gin ReviewIf you've heard about Joe Bonamassa and are wondering what all of the excitement is about, this is probably not the best place to start. This seems to be the fist release in Joe's catalog to create dissent amongst his fan base. It's not bad. It's just not great.
Joe is one of the most passionate an inspired artists to come along in years. He is a true gem for fans of blues rock. A unique and powerful vocalist with an astonishing command of his guitar. Anyone who has seen him live can attest, his explosive musicianship is jaw-dropping. As a performer Joe is humble, passionate, uncompromising, unapologetic and sincere. On his worst night he will stop you dead in your tracks and command your attention. At his best he's downright hypnotizing.
This CD doesn't come close to capturing that experience. It IS very well crafted. The performances are soulful and nuanced. The production values are impeccable. There are some nice moments. It's also rather boring, calculated, self-conscious and restrained. This is Joe's second collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley. Many of his fans are hoping it's his last. Though they wouldn't dare speak of it on the official fan forum. Just look at some of the defensive comments posted here on amazon to get an idea of the zealotry.
After hearing all of Joe's previous releases for the first time I simply couldn't wait to hear them again. I've forced myself to listen to Sloe Gin many times in an effort to identify what's missing. What's missing is the excitement of Joe as a performer. The excitement that earned him his reputation and grass-roots, word-of-mouth fan base. I hope and expect this is just a transition. And I can't wait to see him again live. I know it will be better than this disc.
If you are just getting started with Joe try Blues Deluxe, Had to Cry Today or any of his live releases (DVDs). As for Sloe Gin?... The best I can say is that it doesn't suck.Sloe Gin OverviewNamed best blue grass guitarist in guitar player magazines 2007 readers choice awards, blues rock guitar virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his new solo album, Sloe Gin, on August 21. Bonamassa's sixth studio release re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley who produced 2006's You & Me, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Blues chart in June of last year.

Buddy's Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy ReviewTo the fan from Vienna, VA: Buddy is not in his 70's. Actually, as of the date I'm writing this, he is 63. Regardless, no one I've ever seen packs as much energy into a live performance as Mr. Guy. And I recommend to anyone who hasn't seen him live, do it before it's too late. He truly is the master!!
Anyway, about this CD. It is a compilation of some of best tracks off his Silvertone recordings of the 90's, plus 5 previously unreleased tracks. Definitely for the more casual fan, who doesn't own "Damn Right I've Got the Blues", "Feels Like Rain", "Slippin' In"(the best of the individual studio Silvertone recordings), and "Heavy Love". Also with the Silvertone label, Buddy released a live album w/the Saturday Live Band called "The Real Deal". The only track on "Buddy's Baddest" from "The Real Deal" is "Let Me Love You". "The Real Deal" is definitely worth buying separate because live is how Mr. Guy is meant to be heard.
Overall, I would say "Buddy's Baddest" is a good introduction to Buddy Guy. If you love it, then follow up with "The Real Deal", the individual Silvertone recordings, "Stone Crazy", and "DJ Play My Blues". Also, you can't go wrong with "Live at Montreaux" or "Drinking TNT and Smoking Dynamite"(better), both live recordings with harmonica legend Jr. Wells.....Enjoy!Buddy's Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: Blues MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 15-JUN-1999

Eric Clapton - One More Car One More Rider (2001) ReviewIf it's true that Eric is finished with touring, then he has left us with one masterpiece to view over and over again. It takes us through his career from Cream, Derek & the Dominoes, and his solo works up to Reptile. I saw two of these concerts on this tour and the DVD captures it as wonderfully as I remember it. Clapton's guitar work is fantatic whether on acoustic or electric. he guitar solos are out of this world especially on electric(even though I missed Ol' Blackie). The sound on DTS is superb. And as always his band is top notch. Actually there are twenty songs on the DVD "Will It Go Round In Circles" a Billy Preston hit is performd by him. As you can tell I'm not a writer but I just had to comment on this DVD and if you like this DVD, buy "Live At Hyde Park".Eric Clapton - One More Car One More Rider (2001) Overview

10 Days Out (Blues from the Backroads)/ (CD/DVD) ReviewSometimes these collaborations between famous rockers and old bluesmen don't turn out so well. Some do, such as Jimmy Rodgers' Blues Blues Blues, and Hubert Sumlin's About Them Shoes. In any case, the famous rockers too often take center stage. Kenny Wayne Shepherd takes a different approach on the brilliant 10 Days Out. Shepherd, his bandmates, and the Double Trouble rhythm section are the supporting cast to the real stars of this CD and DVD, weathered bluesmen (and blueswoman!) both well-known and obscure. From acoustic backwoods jams to live electric performances, this has it all. And even better, Shepherd took the audio and video crew to the hometowns of the blues musicians and jammed in kitchens, the backwoods, living rooms.... wherever the magic appeared. Even B.B. King performs in a juke joint in his hometown of Indianola MS. If you love the blues, you must own this CD!
POSTCRIPT: The DVD is absolutely a gem! Professionally produced and worthy of broadcast, the blues musicians talk about their lives and and the blues. And like the music, Shepherd stays in the backgroud. The DVD is not about Kenny On The Road, it's about the blues and the musicians who create the music. It's interesting that this package is marketed as an audio CD with a bonus DVD. It could have easily been packaged as a DVD with a bonus CD - it's that good!10 Days Out (Blues from the Backroads)/ (CD/DVD) OverviewKenny Wayne Shepherd's reverencefor his musical roots are centerstage on Ten Days Out...Blues From The Backroads, a CD+DVD package that features the guitarslinger and the Double Trouble rhythm section of bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton performing with some of the greatest blues players of our time as well as lesserknown but historically significant bluesmen. Traveling to their hometowns to record everywhere from juke joints to front porches, from New Orleans to Kansas, the platinumselling, Grammyr-nominated Shepherd celebrates and becomes part of blues history with Ten Days Out ... Blues From The Backroads. Shepherd took home the 1998 and 2001 Orville H. Gibson Awards for Best Blues Guitarist.

Live In Chicago ReviewThis is the long anticipated follow-up, live album, from Kenny Wayne Shepherd, after "Ten Days Out, Blues From the Backroads" CD/DVD Combo, from a few years back. The clarity of the sound on this CD, is especially good for a live album. The music is "rich" & "deep", because you get several, legendary, blues musicians, accompaning Kenny Wayne. The roster of blues musicians include: Hubert Sumlin (a living legend), Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Buddy Flett, Bryan Lee, Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon (of SRV's Double Trouble), Noah Hunt, Riley Osburn, and Scott Nelson.
From the beginning to the end, the album is full of excitement and entergy. The Band is really "into it", and the crowd is definitely loving it. It gives you one of those "almost like being there", feelings.
Featured tracks include "Deja Voodoo", "Blue on Black", and "I'm a King Bee", but all the songs are great. This is definitely album oriented live music. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one great, electric, blues guitar player. The liner notes include a great introduction by Kenny Wayne, plus there are photos, of the blues musicians performing on this live cd. Plus, you get some background notes, on the featured legendary blues artists in this CD. You will not be disappointed in this live cd for sure. Thanks!!!Live In Chicago Overview

Joe Bonamassa - Live at Rockpalast (2006) ReviewI'm an older player who grew up on Clapton, Martin Barre and all those other pre-SRV (mostly British) blues rock players. I saw Joe's band open for Tull a few years back (they were wonderful! Who is this guy who has the audacity of performing A New Day Yesterday when opening for Tull!). I've been an avid collector of his work ever since. Just purchased this DVD yesterday and, on first viewing the picture and sound looks fine. My fav songs, "New Day..." and the Blind Faith number "Had to Cry Today" rock big time. it is gratifying to see younger players take up the flame of this fine tradition of playing. If all you young players want to catch a small glimpse of blues rock as it was played in the golden age, played by a fine musician your own age, skip the boring SRV wannabes and check out Joe's DVD! It will be a great learning experience.Joe Bonamassa - Live at Rockpalast (2006) Overview

Have Blues Will Travel ReviewSmokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King really hit home with this brand new album, and they manage to do it in the manner that stands apart from their previous efforts. Blood Brothers, their preceding album, was excellent in its own right, but it stuck close to their honed formula of Texas bar blues. On this CD, they took it up a notch. Or two.
Joe and Bnois came up with some nice new grooves, which are catchy and fun, and all the songs feature extremely solid rhythm section that lets the guys break loose and do their thing. Compositionally, there is definitely less chord recycling than I've heard on their other albums, and while few do it better than Smokin' Joe, it's still good for them to chart a new path, get some new flavor flowing - and they do it here.
Joe himself told me that they way it worked was they sat down in his living room with Bnois and just kept working on these together until they liked what they got, and it took them about a year to put the album together. Listening to this CD, it definitely shows that they took their time to get things right, not cut any corners. You have to pay close attention to the lyrics because they did an outstanding job, and every song tells its own story in a unique and clever way. Song themes are thoroughly modern, from love over cyberspace to love affairs gone one-sided to unanswered love to blowing your payday money on yourself to domestic vendetta to fake women.
This time around, Joe and Bnois also focused more on emotionally charged songs, and they deliver them in a way that will tug on your heartstrings and make you feel the hair on your head stand up. Remarkably, those same songs are also VERY catchy, and hopefully will make it to the radio!
I also feel that Joe and Bnois are sort of going back to their roots with this CD, as their playing feels refreshed and more inspired. "R U 4 Real?" is a slow blues scorcher, where Bnois sings funny lyrics and Joe cooks up scorching solos. I was lucky to see them play this song live... After the intro, Joe shouted "play it loud!", and they smoked it, brought the house down, had everybody screaming "play the blues!!!"
Smokin' Joe is one of the few remarkable rock/blues guitarists in the world, and it is sure to satisfy the craving for electric guitar solos in spades. And of course all this wouldn't be what it is without Bnois King, who brings his silky yet rich singing voice that can both make you laugh and make you feel the pain. He is an excellent guitarist himself, who is COMPLETELY different from Joe in sound, style, and chords. Their chemistry is only getting better and better, it seems!
If you like blues-rock or rock, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD. This is not blues for purists, but people who are into modern blues and Texas bar blues I think will love it.Have Blues Will Travel Overview2010 release from the hard-hitting Texas Blues band who have been recording and touring the U.S. and the world since the early '90s. Real Deal: Greatest Hits 1 ReviewI own many SRV CDs but needed this one to have in my car at all times. Some of his best music is on this CD and it is great to have it handy on one CD. If you own a collection of SRV music this is not really needed unless you want a travel CD like I do. I find it necessary to have one. I mourn for him every time I play this CD and find it difficult to accept the fact that we will never hear the music we could have had if he had not left us so young. And I am grateful for the the music he did leave for us to enjoy.Real Deal: Greatest Hits 1 Overview

Black Rock ReviewAdmittedly, I didn't want to like this disc. The prevailing thought was that Kevin Shirley's previous productions have led Bonamassa in more of an arena rock sound and away from his blues roots. While the music has been quite good over the last several albums, it seemed the duo had run it's course. Happily, I was more than pleasantly surprised by this newest entry! A LOT of ground is covered. The opening cut "Steal Your Heart Away", and the original "Blue and Evil" rock full tilt with very familiar riffs, yet his smokin' leads save even the mundane. There are some tracks that can be considered in the traditional blues vein. B.B. King joins the former wunderkind on a duet of Willie Nelson's "Night Life", that and the Blind Boy Fuller tune "Baby You Gotta Change" are old school, with a modern feel. For lovers of heavy guitar oriented British Blues, Jeff Beck's "Spanish Boots" gets Joe B. in Beck and Robin Trower mode with heavy thunderous riffs. Covering Nelson, Beck, John Hiatt and Leonard Cohen show an eclectic musician at the height of his powers. Still, it's great to hear him play some mean slide on 'When The Fire Hits the Sea' and replicate pitch perfect Chicago Blues on Otis Rush's "Three times A Fool". Much has been written about Bonamassa's burgeoning interest in Global Music, the album was recorded in Greece and Greek Musicians were used. This only broadens the canvas for this remarkably gifted artist. It looks like the Bonamassa-Shirley combo can live to see another day. They've produced a very interesting and original work that cements Joe Bonamassa's maturity.Black Rock Overview

Still Got the Blues ReviewMost people know of Gary Moore from his work with Thin Lizzy and his solo albums in the 80s (and let's not forget Skid Row-1970, Colliseum, and G-Force). Most of what he had done up to 1990 was hard rock with great lead guitar. But this album showed a side that Gary had only hinted at with songs like Parisienne Walkways and his early work with Skid Row. A good portion of the songs are covers but Gary makes each one his own. His vocals are bluesy and his lead playing is a joy to be heard. I used to listen to this album all the time during my part time job when I was in college. It helped the time go by quickly. It's very enjoyable from start to finish.Still Got the Blues Overview

Living Proof ReviewThis triumphant album opens with the song "74 Years Young." The song begins quietly as Buddy looks back at his life. But when he hits the bridge he lays down a savage guitar solo that: a) owes as much to Link Wray as it does to the blues and b) displays what 74 years young really means. This song is followed by another autobiographical song where he tells the story of his early life in Louisiana where, as a child, he taught himself to play a two-string guitar. Again, a blistering lead is the musical centerpiece. Track three, "On The Road" is a more "conventional" blues work-up, horns and all. Another fantastic track, where, after the fade at the end, one can hear a band-member saying "Yeah" in appreciation. Track four is the duet with B.B. King. It's pure magic. And the coda, where Buddy and B.B. speak to one another, is just about as moving a moment as one can find in recorded music. In the duet with Carlos Santana, Buddy shows he can do Latin rhythms side-by-side with the master. And so it goes for an hour or so, one great track after another.
Frankly, I can find possibly only one track, "Too Soon" that might be just a tad too tame or formulaic. But this is followed by the terrific final fours songs on the album, which include "Let The Door Hit Ya" and "Guess What" (both with Buddy in full sexual swagger). So one possibly formulaic song in an hour's worth of new music is a something I will take any day of the week.
An argument could be mounted that this is Buddy's career defining album. At 74, his skills are still intact and he remains a consummate songwriter, with something new to offer, both in his lyrics and certainly in his music.** It is kind of a wonder that people like Buddy, and the lesser know and somewhat older Hubert Sumlin, can still excite you with high level performances.
The production, at least on the vinyl pressing, is outstanding. I don't know if, or how much, compression will appear on the CD, but this is an album that was clearly recorded pretty much live in the studio, with probably few, if any, overdubs; so the sound is organic and real. Consequently, it benefits from being heard in the analog domain of vinyl. Plus, the vinyl may end up being some sort of collector's item as all the music appears on the first three sides leaving the fourth side blank so it can be devoted to a really cool etching in the vinyl of a portion of the guitar on the back of the LP cover. My only complaint about the vinyl release is there are no liner notes to show songwriting credits, song personnel, etc. But, at this price, for a double LP which is a very quiet pressing, this is a very small complaint.
The pre-release rumors here in Chicago were: "You got to hear this one when it comes out." Boy, were the rumors right!
** 10/24/10 At the time I wrote this review, as indicated above, I was without songwriting credit. Now that I have learned the songwriting credits, this sentence requires modification. Buddy shares songwriting credit on five of the twelve tracks on this album with drummer/producer, Tom Hambridge. On six of the seven the remaining tracks, Hambridge shares songwriting credit with either Gary Nicholson or Richard Fleming (Who also receives songwriting credit on two of the Guy/Hambridge compositions.). One song is credited to Hambridge alone.Living Proof Overview
