White Sugar ReviewI bought this CD mainly for curiosity. I did not know anything about this young artist even if she is British. I have to say that I am pleased I did it. White Sugar is a very solid blues/rock CD and Joanne displays all her ability as guitar player and singer. It looks pretty evident that SRV and Albert King are her main influences. Her style is reminiscent of the sound of the two great players of the past and this is really clear in the two excellent slow numbers included in the mix. Listening to Time Has Come you will surely be able to recognise two or three licks very distinctive of Albert's style while in Blackest Day, that is also in my view the best song of the album, the influence of the great SRV is very strong. Having said that I would like to point out that Joanne guitar playing is really very good and her soloing is always well balanced and inspired. I would like also to add that she is a good singer too, and this is a plus that is not so common in the business. In conclusion a very enjoyable album that will please blues and rock/blues aficionados.White Sugar Overview

Couldn't Stand the Weather ReviewThis is the first SRV album I got and it got me hooked. "Scuttle Buttin'" starts it off and starts it off right. A very high energy, catchy tune that many have tried to imitate with limited success. "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is also good and has a pretty cool video for it, too. My favorite on this one is "Honey Bee." It's a classic-style blues number with great, upbeat writing and one of the best intros I've ever heard. The bonus tracks (five of them) are also a treat for SRV fans, as you get to hear stuff the band recorded, but never released. It also has another excerpt from an interview he did in 1989. This is a very strong follow-up and should be in any blues fan's collection.
P.S. Try to watch live recordings of the band, where you get to see the energy they played with. Sky Is Crying ReviewThat's not hyperbole. Man, I still remember it. It was 1995. I was browsing in a record store and came upon this album. I didn't know who the hell it was-- it wasn't like anything I would usually buy-- but I decided to try sometehing different. I was blown right out of my pants. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I played the tape so many times in 6 months that it started to wear out. It made me want to learn to play, even though I never thought about playing the guitar before-- it was that good, that moving.
Every song on this CD is amazing. How can you talk about good and better when you've reached this level of mastery? You can't. It's like asking which van Gogh painting is your favorite. Still, could you ever buy a van Gogh for under $20?
That being said, there is one song on this CD that is maybe the best pure electric guitar ever recorded: "Little Wing" is a masterpiece among masterpieces. It has it all: such feeling in the slow sections that you cry, such blistering guitar in the power sections that you are stunned, and such subtle mastery throughout that you can hear different nuances each time you listen to the song. Just check out when and how he uses the natural harmonics-- and how he even throws in the Wes Montgomery Jazz/octave work-- each in exactly the right place. This guy wasn't just a guitar maniac-- he was a Master, with a capital "M"-- and on top of it all, he was a wonderful, caring man.
Putting "Life by the Drop" as the last song on the compilation is almost too much for me to handle-- knowing that, when that last note finishes resonating, there will NEVER be any more...
I cry every time I see his bio on MTV-- when I think about that helicopter crash.
There is something wrong with a world in which a man like this gets only 35 years.

Johnny Winter:The Woodstock Experience (2CD) ReviewTwo discs 34 and 68 minutes each approximately. The sound is very good,especially a live recording from so long ago. The studio set has been remastered in the recent past,and is fine also.
This package contains Winter's first album for Columbia Records. It's the original album,without the "bonus" tracks which are on the latest reissue.
By now most Winter fans will already own the original record,so not much has to be said. It was a good first album,though lacking some of the fire found on his Sonobeat/Liberty Records album,"The Progressive Blues Experiment".
The live set is Winter's complete set at Woodstock. At the time he was a relative unknown-his appearance at this festival made him a star. Winter is accompanied by Tommy Shannon on bass,and "Uncle" John Turner on drums. Edgar Winter is also here,playing and singing on a number of tracks. Winter's guitar was on fire during his entire set. No matter what the tempo,his guitar playing was always scorching and his technique left quite an impression on people,especially his slide playing,which was razor-sharp yet had that "dirty " tone that was so popular. For those listeners who like blues/rock guitar,backed with some gritty vocals-this is it. Winter fans will find much to like here. His playing is close to the Sonobeat/Liberty album mentioned above. There are seven unreleased tracks-all worthwhile,the only track that's been released is "Mean Town Blues". Why these tracks were never released is a mystery. Its nice to finally have the entire set in one nice package.
The packaging is nice. Both discs are housed in a cardboard slip-case. Inside,each disc is in another cardboard sleeve,and inside that is a paper sleeve that houses the disc. The graphics are nice on all the sleeves. The original album is housed in a facsimile of the original album cover. The live disc is in a sleeve with photographs of Winter playing live. The inside paper sleeve has information on the tracks and a short essay on Woodstock. The poster is nice but not essential-especially since it's folded over several times to fit in the slip-case.

Ultimate Collection ReviewThis is the best single disc Freddie King Collection on the market, considering that Hideaway: The best of Freddie King is out of print. Two or three selections are doubtful (Dust my broom and Sugar sweet), but mostly it is really good, combining his trademark instrumentals (Hideaway, The Stumble, etc) with wocal tracks. Freddie's sharp, melodic and intense guitar playing influenced a lot white blues guitarists - most obviously - at least to my ears - Eric Clapton on the John Mayall's Bluesbrakers with Eric Clapton album. If you like blues, or just great guitar playing (and there's some fine singing from Freddie as well), get this record.Ultimate Collection Overview

T-Bone Blues ReviewOriginally issued by Atlantic Records in 1959, "T-Bone Blues" compiled 11 singles recorded between 1955 and 1957, and the 1994 CD reissue added four bonus tracks, including "Why Not", which Jimmy Rogers would later record as "Walkin' By Myself" and credit to himself, and a soulful rendition of Leroy Carr's "How Long Blues".
Many of these sides are re-recordings of Aaron "T-Bone" Walker's classic 40s sides, like "T-Bone Shuffle", "They Call It Stormy Monday", and "Mean Old World", and while any self-respecting blues collection should include Walker's original Capitol and Black & White singles (Rhino's "Blues Masters - The Very Best Of T-Bone Walker" is a great collection of those early sides), "T-Bone Blues" is perhaps the most satisfying album Walker ever made.
The sound is simply magnificent for mid-50s waxings, wonderfully clear and crisp and realistic, and T-Bone Walker is backed by men like Junior Wells, Jimmy Rogers, Ransom Knowling, legendary arranger/pianist Lloyd Glenn, and saxists John "Plas" Johnson, Jr., Edward Chamblee, Mack Easton, and Earl Hines-cohort Andrew "Goon" Gardner.
And T-Bone's own playing and singing is superb. Just listen to his inspired soloing on "Blues For Marili", "Mean Old World", the classic "T-Bone Blues", and this the definitive rendition of "Papa Ain't Salty". It's a delight to hear him playing with Little Walter Jacobs on the 1955 recordings, which include a swinging "Play On, Little Girl" and the fine bonus cut "T-Bone Blues Special", and Walker's re-recording of "They Call It Stormy Monday" captures the essence of the magnificent original version from 1947, this time with stellar fidelity.
There are a number of amazing instrumentals here, too...T-Bone Walker duels with his nephew R.S. Rankin and highly esteemed jazz guitarist Barney Kessel on the up-tempo scorcher "Two Bones And A Pick", and comes off victorious. He may have been best known for his slow, after-hours blues laments, but T-Bone could cut it with the best of them no matter if the tempo was set at 40 or 140.
The highlights on this disc are too many to mention...among the best of the lesser-known songs are the up-tempo "You Don't Know What You're Doing", sung by Rankin, and the jouyous instrumental "Shufflin' The Blues", but literally everything is worth a listen.
An essential addition to any semi-serious collection of electric blues.T-Bone Blues Overview

Power of the Pontchartrain ReviewEvery time you buy a Tab Benoit's CD you can be sure that you will not be disappointed. And, as always, the brand new "Power of the Pontchartrain" confirms that rule. Excellent material played extremely well by Tab and the accompanying band. This time the "Louisiana's Leroux" are the supporting band and this is not irrelevant to the great final result. In fact the band spent several years, as explained in the linear notes, with one of the greatest Louisiana blues player of all time Mr. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. The album is really very good and I would take the risk to say that from my point of view this is Tab's best effort so far. Tab's voice sounds great as always and the guitar playing is absolutely fantastic throughout the entire CD. The excellent and clean production and sound of Telarc Blues deserve a mention too. All the eleven songs in the menu are very strong and you will not be tempted to use the skip bottom of your CD player at any time, however I believe that a special mention is deserved by the great cover of the Stephen Stills' classic "For what it's worth", by the deep blues "Midnight and lonesome" that for me is the best cut of the bunch, and by the two mid tempo "Somebody got to go" and "Addicted". Very highly recommended for all the blues lovers.Power of the Pontchartrain OverviewIn the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the idea ofblues from the bayoutakes on a whole new meaning. On The Jimmy Reed Highway ReviewAs a Jimmy Vaughan fan, I love his understated style. His clear and subtle style of playing is a joy, allowing the listener to enjoy the song without being overwhelmed by one guy's playing. Well suited to collective efforts like this.
I had never listened to Omar Dykes until now, but the man has great range. On some songs his growl reminds me of Howlin' Wolf, and on others he becomes more melodic. A perfect complement to Jimmy Vaughan.
Add to those two the contributions of Kim Wilson and James Cotton on harp, Lou Ann Barton on vocals, and it is a great blend of talent. And the Jimmy Reed music is the perfect place for the group to play around in. It sounds as if the group was really having fun while making this. It makes me smile while listening.
I liked every track on this CD, which is rare for me- usually I find at least a couple duds. This CD is phenomenal, and a perfect play for the deck on a nice summer night with a cold beverage, watching the sun go down. A classic effort.

In Step Review"In Step" is often cited by critics as Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album. And his playing on this album is actually a bit more economical, maybe even a bit more mannered, than on his earlier releases...whether or not that's a good thing is a matter of taste, I suppose.
The production is a bit more slick than usual as well, the tone of Vaughan's guitar is cleaner, and a keyboard player and occational horns have been added to the mix, but that's not to say that Stevie Ray Vaughan had gotten soft on his final solo album before his tragic death in 1990 - he just turned a little bit more towards rock rather than blues.
"In Step" opens with a blistering rocker, "The House Is Rockin'", followed by the bluesy "Crossfire", which features a superb solo by Vaughan.
"Tightrope" ventures into hard rock territory, but Stevie Ray's cover of Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby" is genuine blues-rock, and it is followed by a good reading of Buddy Guy's slow, tortured blues "Leave My Girl Alone". Vaughan didn't quite have the pipes to match the intensity of Guy's original, but he does a fine job with what he has, and the guitar playing is superb as usual.
"Travis Walk" is a funky, up-tempo instrumental with some great drumming by Chris Layton (who, incidentally, used to play drums for Buddy Guy and Lightnin' Hopkins). "Wall Of Denial" is pretty well known, but it is perhaps one of the lesser tracks on this album, with some fine guitar playing but not much in the way of either hooks or a real "groove" to grab a hold of the listener.
"Scratch n' Sniff", however, is a fine up-tempo rock song with some excellent boogie piano fills by keyboardist Reese Wynans, and a great solo by Vaughan.
Stevie Ray Vaughan can't quite pull off Howlin' Wolf's "Love Me Darlin' (May I Have A Talk With You)", but if you aren't familiar with the original, this version will actually sound pretty great, I guess. And finally, the original "In Step" album winds down with the excellent nine-minute instrumental "Rivera Paradise", a slow, moody piece.
The five excellent bonus tracks begin with a short interview snippet. The remaining four songs are all live performances: "The House Is Rockin'" and "Let Me Love You Baby" from "In Step", "Texas Flood" from Vaughan's 1983 debut album of the same name, and "Life Without You" from "Soul To Soul".
Stevie Ray Vaughan was a terrific live performer, and it's pure joy to listen to the raw, fiery live versions of the two songs from this album, which to me work better than the originals.
Highly recommended, as are all Vaughan's studio albums (although I don't agree with those who call it his best).

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble ReviewWell it is finally here. The much anticipated Stevie Ray Vaughan box set. For most SRV fans, this will be a satisfying set. Of course some of us would like to have seen much more unreleased material included and less of the album version stuff. But we all know the powers that be had to appeal not just to us SRV freaks but to the casual listener as well. No problem. I think this box set offers a nice balance for all. Tracks run in chronological order beginning in 1977 with only one cut from the Cobras days (I wish there were more) and ends on disc three with a few tunes from the second to last show in Alpine Valley.
More than half of the material is officially previously unreleased and is high quality live and outtake material. Many of the great live tracks like the Timothy White show version of "Dirty Pool" and the MTV tracks are here too. These will be a great surprise for those that haven't heard them before. The live cuts are from some of the best shows like Montreux (even a little of the booing after Texas Flood is there), Houston, Austin, Philadelphia, New Mexico, Alpine Valley, etc.; though I am surprised none of the excellent Tokyo, Japan 1985 show is included. In addition, there are a few cuts of other artists on whose albums Stevie Ray appeared.
For the hard-core collector you probably already have almost everything. However, the good news is that the quality on these discs blows away anything you most likely have on a boot. The fourth disc is a thirty or so minute DVD with five never-aired and never-issued performances from the television program Austin City Limits, recorded on October 10, 1989. I am not sure why these five tunes were cut from the commercial DVD release but I guess it might be because he broke a string on a tune or two during the performance. Who knows they are good regardless. Also included is a 72-page booklet of pictures, session details, essays, discography, and quotes from other musicians and friends. My favorite quote is on the last page, "The world misses his music, but I miss my brother." -Jimmie Vaughan.Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble OverviewStevie's monster chops, huge sound and deep soul won adoration from rock fans and blues stars around the world, all of whom will want to pick up this long-awaited boxed set: 18 live and studio tracks plus 36 unissued recordings (VERY early stuff plus live versions of Cold Shot; Lovestruck Baby; Crossfire; The Sky Is Crying; Tightrope , and more) including a whole DVD of never-aired Austin City Limits performances! Showdown ReviewIt's nothing short of awesome to hear these three guitar greats come together. Albert Collins was one of the BEST blues guitarists in the world. Any recording which features him is going to be worthwhile. Robert Cray is very good too and has a wonderful voice. Johnny Copeland contributes some nice vocals and guitar licks, but I'm not as familiar with him as I am Albert and Robert. There are only two downsides to this wonderful CD. First, the sound quality isn't as good as it could be. It definitely sounds its age. I know that Alligator is not a huge record label, but it would be nice if they could remaster and rerelease some of their titles such as this one. Second drawback is that the album is too short! It's so good that you don't want it to end. It's not much longer than half an hour. But it is good stuff. If you like guitar-based blues, BUY this CD!Showdown OverviewAlligator's Grammy-winning, best-selling title of all time (which has sold over 285,000 units), remastered on CD with the added bonus track "Something To Remember You By". Texas Flood ReviewWhat an amazing album. "Love Struck Baby" starts it off and is one of their most famous songs. "Testify" is one of the greatest songs Stevie ever did. It shows you his rough, lightning-quick style and why so many became imitators of his playing. "Rude Mood" and "Lenny" are great, but are even better on the Carnegie Hall album for arrangement. "Texas Flood" is a great example of classic blues writing and another favorite of the masses. Plus, the five bonus tracks are great. Some live stuff and even part of an interview Stevie did in 1989, which continues on the other re-issued albums. Since this is the debut album, this is a great place to start a collection. And you will start one if you buy this, believe me.

Anyone who likes Stevie Ray should buy his albums instead. There are only four of them. If you have all of SRV's albums then this CD is worth keeping around only for the groovy version of the Beatles' Taxman. This is only a tiny sampling of the great music that Stevie Ray has to offer. This will leave you unfulfilled. You'll take this disc out of your player wanting more. Blues Masters: The Very Best of ReviewIt's encouraging to hear contemporary artists like Keb Mo', Robert Cray, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd carry on the blues tradition into the new millennium. However, I'm always drawn back to the originals like Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf and of course Lightnin' Hopkins.
This newly packaged collection of songs from Rhino is an excellent companion to Rhino's 1993 anthology Mojo Hand. The Very Best of duplicates seven tracks from that release and focuses on Hopkins' work from 1947 to 1961, but offers enough new material to make this a worthwhile purchase. And with Hopkins' lack of loyalty to any one record label, no fewer than seven different labels are represented on this 16-track collection.
On many of these songs Hopkins performs solo accompanying himself on guitar (and adding piano on "Mighty Crazy"). On a handful of tracks he is backed by a bass player and on "Shotgun Blues," a second guitarist. Only on "Conversation Blues" and "Last Night Blues" is there a full band of bass, drums and harmonica (provided by Sonny Terry) backing Hopkins.
This is an excellent introduction (or addition) for fans of acoustic Texas folk/blues performed by one of the genre's greatest practioners. Jimmie Vaughan-Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites ReviewAlright now, Im diggin it. Im a big JV fan, love his sound and style, and its here in spades. This album has possibly the best sound of any of his ablums. It sounds really off the cuff and live, in the best way. Very raw, bright and loose. The horn section is hot, the rhythms are "butt-rockin"! and of course the guitar is a hot wire putting electricity to the whole thing, although his tone is not quite as overdriven or up-front in the mix as his other albums. Lou Ann Barton even duets on a couple tunes, the whole band sounds great and the production is really live sounding.
I read in some magazine that Jimmie recorded this as a grouping of singles, one or two tracks here, a track there, all in Austin, just like they used to do it in the good ol days. That approach might be why it all sounds so vibrant and energetic. It definitely puts you in a smokey old barroom somewhere out there when you close your eyes. Sounds you'd hear suckin down a few brews in some greazy little bowling alley, feelin good!
These are all covers of heroes like Roscoe Gordon and Roy Milton even Willie Nelson, and of course theres a nod to lucky charm Jimmy Reed, and 1 original Vaughan instrumental "Comin and Goin"
If you like Jimmie Vaughan youll like this, hell you probably already got it. If youre just figuring things out, this is as good as any place to start, with the exception of "The Essential Jimmie Vaughan" which has a little of everything on it.

Boogie Man ReviewOmar's gritty and slightly hollow baritone vocals pay homage to the boogie blues by way of Memphis, TN. The Howlers stay closer to traditional Texas blues rock with roadhouse influences and an open-tuning slide background. Omar & The Howlers remind one of eating good barbecue in the August heat; weaving many traditional tunes by putting a Tennessee spin on the 12-bar. Omar's gruff and intense vocal interpretations will remind one of a more nasal and laid-back version of Bob "The Bear" Hite's recordings with Canned Heat in the mid-late 1970's (The New Age, 1973, Human Condition, 1978, Etc.) The ever-present influence of John Lee Hooker permeates every crevasse of this album in an 11 track front-to-back boogie. Marshall Road Apocalypse ReviewIf it hadn't been for accidently stumbling across Cathy Jean's last cd called "I Want" in the used bins,I would have never heard of this wonderful artist. I don't know how a blues singer with this much talent continues to fly under the radar screen. This latest album was a big surprise for me. Not that her last album wasn't very good too. It's just that she's made such a big leap both in her songwriting and her singing abilities. Not to mention the hot band she has backing her here. Where her last album was mainly blues oriented, here she expands on the blues theme and explores other styles like jazz, pop, and rock. Even on her blues tunes she adds a little something extra to each that makes these songs different. On the first song she opens with probably the most basic blues tune on the cd with "Your One And Only". But then on the next track "Kauai" she uses a full orchestra backing to great effect on this catchy straight ahead pop song that would probably be playing on the radio today if it wasn't for the prefab Brittany's and Christina's out there. This song really took me by surprise, and I knew I might be in for something special after this. Jump on down to track 4 with "The Kids From Glen Burnie" and I got surprised again by this 50's style jazz tune complete with a cool piano and trumpet sound and spooky lyrics about the horrors that await you in a haunted house on Marshall Road, which is the street this album is named after, that Cathy Jean wants to have destroyed. Her voice and instrumentation jibe perfect on this tune. "Austria" is another good blues song with a little different slant. This time with a cello added that gives it a kind of Middle Eastern flavor, but with Cathy Jean singing nothin' but the blues. "Strut" is the only full horn song, and it has a kind of funk feel to it with the use of guitar wah wah pedal added. The rest of the music here is pretty much blues rock oriented material, but with that little something added to make each song stand out from the rest. Cathy Jean's voice is really something special. I'm surprised none of the other reviewers here didn't mention how much she sounds like Ann Wilson of the band Heart. There's times I can't tell their two voices apart. Other than that similarity, Cathy Jean really stands out from the crowd. She's an amazing songwriter. Everything here she wrote. And in every song she has an interesting story to tell. Don't be fooled by the provocative cover. She's a blues Diva to the bone, and you can tell she takes her music serious. There's only a couple women in the blues world who I put in the same class. And that's Joanna Connor, who in my opinion is the best woman blues guitar player we have today. And Deborah Coleman, who is another outstanding blues singer/songwriter. I highly recommend this cd. It's a heck of a lot of fun to listen to, and a hard one to put down. One of the very best blues albums from 2001.Marshall Road Apocalypse OverviewThe music's great! Some of my favourite cuts are, for down right Pure Sex Blues: "Your One & Only", "Ms. Jeneration Hip Zone", "Dirty One", and "Strut" do it for me. The acoustic cuts "Behind My Back" and "Prophet" hit the spot. "You Don't Know" "Get Me Out" and "The Fabulous New Debbie Song" are beautifully crafted and well executed songs. It's good to see Aussie wine get a mention, thanks!...Without sounding too sexist, I was first attracted to Cathy Jean from her shots in Living Blues. I could not wait to get the mag to see what shots there were of her. I'm glad she had a different photo in each issue. She's a "real spunk"-- that's Aussie for (I don't know) beautiful, hot, sexy, a 10, take your pick. The fact that she plays great guitar/writes songs and can sing is the icing, the strawberry and the cream on the cake... It's really the music that's important, we know that. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at the El Mocambo 1983 (1983) ReviewThere is nothing like seeing great blues in a small club. Stevie has done a lot of great live work (except while in the depths of his drug abuse), but this video is the pinnacle of what he was capable of. This small club in Toronto, with rowdy fans has more energy and fire than any arena, stadium or theatre could match.
This was also a musical high point of Stevie's career. He was older than the "In the Beginning" disc (also taken from a small club), and his playing reflects it. He was more fluid and confident, and you can see that he was REALLY feeling "it" the night of the El Mocambo show. I have never heard or seen a better rendition of Texas Flood. I have never even seen a beter blues guitar performance by anyone on any song compared to it. The versions of Tell Me, Wham!, So Excited, Testify, Voodoo Chile, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Lenny also are the best I have heard from any recording (official or bootleg) of Stevie's.
As for the DVD, it could use some work. I noticed, in comparison with the VHS version, the mixers have brought the volume down a bit on Stevie's guitar, while making the low end sounds more prominent. This takes away from the power of Stevie's performance a bit. They also still have not included the version of Little Wing that was performed right before Third Stone From the Sun! Please! Include it, I will buy the DVD again! On a bright note for the DVD, the interview included is quite interesting, with Tommy and Chris' thoughts and relflections on Stevie and the night of the El Mocambo show.
All in all, I would still get the DVD over the VHS copy. But regardless, every fan of the blues, Stevie, and/or guitar should buy this video. Ever hear Eric Clapton describe Stevie as an open channel, in which musical ideas just flowed through him? Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 (2004) ReviewAfter reading for years about Stevie Ray's rejection in 1982 at the hands of the Montreux audience, I was both excited and a bit apprehensive upon the release of this DVD, knowing it would afford me the opportunity to experience the realism of the event. I've forced myself to believe that the booing was directed more at what the crowd perceived as a pretentiousness on the part of SRV, with the cowboy hat, boots, chest tattoo, and the fact that Stevie was certainly not a conventional or mainstream blues performer. Being a relatively young, not yet 28 year old white man probably didn't help either.
But as I watch the 1982 show, I am absolutely dumbstruck by the crowd's reaction. Yes, there are obviously some players in the crowd who recognize the mastery of Stevie's technique, and they initially cheer rather boisterously and with great approval. The cheering only seemed to anger the "purists" who booed all the more loudly and who seemed to have made the final word by the conclusion of SRV's set.
If you can place yourself in the moment, the final shot of Stevie walking off backstage is heartbreaking, showing bewilderment, discouragement, anger - I can't imagine what was going through his mind - he had just played his heart out!
Most of us know the rest of the story and Stevie's incredible success at bringing his music to a mass audience. What '82 Montreux perhaps shows best is how difficult it can be for anyone to present a unique and original approach to a traditional musical idiom like the Blues.
I initially intended to write a scathing indictment of the Montreux crowd. I'll just leave it at this - Frank Zappa once said that most people wouldn't recognize good music if it bit them in the ass. Blues Masters 15 ReviewThis is another fine entry in Rhino's lengthy Blues Masters series. It isn't the definitive word on slide guitar blues, of course, or on any of the artists represented, but as a sampler it works very well, featuring a lesser-known (but very good) rendition of "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James, and well-chosen cuts by Muddy Waters, J.B. Hutto (the tough boogie "Too Much Alcohol"), and Robert Nighthawk (a superb medley of two of his best songs, "Anna Lee" and "Sweet Black Angel").

The compilers at Rhino have included the Allman Brothers' version of Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues" rather than the original, "Shake Your Moneymaker" by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and Canned Heat's take on "Rollin' And Tumblin'"...I would probably have gone with McTell's own "Mama T'Ain't Long Fo' Day", which is one of the most beautiful acoustic slide guitar blues tunes you'll ever hear, but that's just me.

Robert Johnson is missing, and Son House is, too, but the compilers try to make amends by including some lesser-known tracks which should appeal to the experienced blues fan, like James Williamson's "Homesick's Shuffle", Babe Turner's "I Am The Black Ace", Earl Hooker's "If You Ever Seen A One-Eyed Woman Cry", the harsh "Treat Me The Way You Do" by Joe Carter, and a rare opportunity to hear Chuck Berry wielding the slide on the odd instrumental "Deep Feeling". And the awesome Blind Willie Johnson is here as well, performing the eerie "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground".
