The Scent of Light ReviewI have been listening to Ottmar for many years. This is an awesome achievement on his part, I think. I have not stopped listening since I bought it. A definite must for Ottmar fans!The Scent of Light OverviewWhile The Scent of Light is Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra's first studio album featuring the band since 2004's La Semana, the recording picks up on the spacial sensibility of the recent binaural CD Up Close by spreading the sound across the full stereo field to create superb listening depth. While Ottmar has stepped away from the recent minimalism of his 2007 Grammy nominated solo album One Guitar, you still sense the high resolution, beautiful clarity, and live combo dynamic. It's a layered recording, with the multiple guitars, basses, keyboards & percussion subtly exchanging altitude, rooms, and dimensions. The excellent detailing and positioning leaves a lot of space for the imagination to roam, resulting in a big sound, big pictures, big stories.

On The Jimmy Reed Highway ReviewAs a Jimmy Vaughan fan, I love his understated style. His clear and subtle style of playing is a joy, allowing the listener to enjoy the song without being overwhelmed by one guy's playing. Well suited to collective efforts like this.
I had never listened to Omar Dykes until now, but the man has great range. On some songs his growl reminds me of Howlin' Wolf, and on others he becomes more melodic. A perfect complement to Jimmy Vaughan.
Add to those two the contributions of Kim Wilson and James Cotton on harp, Lou Ann Barton on vocals, and it is a great blend of talent. And the Jimmy Reed music is the perfect place for the group to play around in. It sounds as if the group was really having fun while making this. It makes me smile while listening.
I liked every track on this CD, which is rare for me- usually I find at least a couple duds. This CD is phenomenal, and a perfect play for the deck on a nice summer night with a cold beverage, watching the sun go down. A classic effort.

Sloe Gin ReviewIf you've heard about Joe Bonamassa and are wondering what all of the excitement is about, this is probably not the best place to start. This seems to be the fist release in Joe's catalog to create dissent amongst his fan base. It's not bad. It's just not great.
Joe is one of the most passionate an inspired artists to come along in years. He is a true gem for fans of blues rock. A unique and powerful vocalist with an astonishing command of his guitar. Anyone who has seen him live can attest, his explosive musicianship is jaw-dropping. As a performer Joe is humble, passionate, uncompromising, unapologetic and sincere. On his worst night he will stop you dead in your tracks and command your attention. At his best he's downright hypnotizing.
This CD doesn't come close to capturing that experience. It IS very well crafted. The performances are soulful and nuanced. The production values are impeccable. There are some nice moments. It's also rather boring, calculated, self-conscious and restrained. This is Joe's second collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley. Many of his fans are hoping it's his last. Though they wouldn't dare speak of it on the official fan forum. Just look at some of the defensive comments posted here on amazon to get an idea of the zealotry.
After hearing all of Joe's previous releases for the first time I simply couldn't wait to hear them again. I've forced myself to listen to Sloe Gin many times in an effort to identify what's missing. What's missing is the excitement of Joe as a performer. The excitement that earned him his reputation and grass-roots, word-of-mouth fan base. I hope and expect this is just a transition. And I can't wait to see him again live. I know it will be better than this disc.
If you are just getting started with Joe try Blues Deluxe, Had to Cry Today or any of his live releases (DVDs). As for Sloe Gin?... Acoustic Sketches ReviewThis one of Phil Keaggy's better instrumental pieces. His playing his masterful, smooth, and sometimes unexpected (meaning he does things on the instrument that is not anticipated by the listener). Keaggy can play slow and melodic, or fast and furious.
This CD is a series of acoustic pieces which have a classical, jazzy, soundtrack feel to them. Keaggy's music is filled with energy and vitality. There are moments when he is repetitious, but not in a tedious sense. Just as the title of the CD suggests, Keaggy is painting by music and the acoustic guitar is his brush.
The CD has many different sounds, textures, and styles. As you listen, you can hear the different influences coming out in Keaggy's music. For instance, sometimes the style of Pat Metheny comes through pretty strong. On other tunes, Michael Hedges is present. Nonetheless, Keaggy sounds quite nice on all the songs.
The CD has about an hour or more worth of music, all acoustic, and makes for great listening while reading. If you enjoy guitar work that has a wide range of texture and style then you will love this CD. And if you love this CD, then I suggest getting a copy of Phil Keaggy's CD titled "Beyond Nature." I highly recommend both works.Acoustic Sketches Overview

The Great Paraguayan: Guitar Music of Barrios ReviewThis is a masterpiece of a recording by one of the greatest guitarists in the world of the work of Barrios, an unappreciated composer. I recommend this highly for anyone that loves the classical guitar, student or professional. Williams brings great sensitivity to the nuances of these compositions and tremendous skill to these emotionally complex pieces. My only concern is that this is also packaged as "From the jungles of Paraguay" giving the impression that this are two different recording when they are exactly the same.
