Born Under a Bad Sign Review... and under a half moon on the decline: This is one amazing blues album, doubtlessly one of the greatest ever recorded, and one of the most influential records in all of music history. Because in 1966-67, when Albert King got together on a total of no more than five days with the legendary Booker T. Jones and the MGs, Isaac Hayes, and a recording team of the likewise legendary Stax records to produce this album, the blues was quietly on its way out; in danger of being sidelined by psychedelia and the rock music revolution started by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. That this did not happen is due, not least, to Albert King and "Born Under a Bad Sign."
Already seasoned musician when the album was recorded, Mississippi-born and Arkansas-raised Albert (Nelson) King was a man who perfectly understood to employ minimal construction to maximum effect; to fully exploit even the most basic elements of a blues tune and use his exquisite sense of timing, and subtleness on the one hand and emphasis on the other, rather than dazzling the listener by a frenzied race all over the fretboard. ("He can take four notes and write a volume," renowned guitarist Mike Bloomfield once said about him.) This album is a perfect example of that style, and it promptly proved so influential that King's style would be taken up, in short order, by a whole new generation of guitar players, most notably Peter Green, Eric Clapton (listen to Cream's "Disraeli Gears," in particular its title track "Strange Brew," which unabashedly emulates, note-for-note, the guitar solo of "Personal Manager") and Jimi Hendrix, who like Albert King was a "leftie" and in the habit of turning his guitar upside down, with the bass strings at the bottom - and whose respect for King caused him to forever be reluctant to share a stage with his idol, although a lucky audience at San Francisco's Filmore West did see them appear together on the club's opening night.
But this album did not only prove to be one of the most influential ones in electric blues in general; it also constitutes the cornerstone of Albert King's own musical legacy, with its Booker T. Jones/Al Bell-written title track, which has since been recorded by everyone from Paul Butterfield to its inclusion of the CD based on TV's "Simpsons;" and such songs as "Crosscut Saw," "Oh Pretty Woman," "The Hunter," "Personal Manager," and of course King's first Stax single, "Laundromat Blues." Partly R&B record, not least due to the participation of the Memphis Horns (Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love and Joe Arnold), who provide a frame and additional layers of sound to King's guitar, to the studio band (Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson, Jr.), the album is a product of its time only in the length of the songs, which are generally tied to the 3 1/2-minute limit set by the then-prevailing mandates of radio airplay. Yet, at heart, this is purely blues, from the title track's first powerful riff to the quiet mood of the closing "The Very Thought of You;" and from the feeling of being down and out (summed up, deadpan, in the title track's chorus: "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all") and the tale of a no-good woman who "kept on foolin' around till I got stuck on [her]" ("Oh Pretty Woman") to the grating guitar and verbal punches of the "Laundromat Blues" ("You better hear my warning ...I don't want you to get so clean, baby, you just might wash your life away"). Albert King's early gospel training shines through in every soulful note of songs such as "I Almost Lost My Mind" and "As the Years Go Passing By," and last but not least the album also includes King's own "Down Don't Bother Me" and the Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller classic "Kansas City."
Obviously feeling the need to convince an uncertain audience to give the record a try, Deanie Parker's 1967 liner notes summed up the prevalent blues cliches by recommending the album to anybody who had ever been hurt by a lover, deceived by their best friend or broke and "ready to call it quits" and promising: "Albert King has the solution if you have the time to listen ... he'll get through to you." Well, "solution" may be a bit over-optimistic - but there sure is plenty of feeling on this album, and some of the finest guitar solos ever recorded. And that in and of itself, as well as the name Albert King, should be more than enough of a recommendation to give the album a try.

In Session ReviewRarely does an album get released where teacher and student aren't too shy to cut loose. I didn't have high expectations for this one but this release is clearly an an exception to the rule. AK and SRV are having a great time and while SRV is in awe of the master bluesman he doesn't take the back seat on this one because around Albert, that WOULD be disrespectful. AK and SRV go at it with great respect for each other and the music. The result is a firey session that is sure to satisfy every fan of these two artists. SRV is clearly the only guitar player to copy AK's licks perfectly and it is a real treat to hear them together. The CD is peppered with dialogue between to two and AK acknowledges SRV as the future of blues as if to pass the torch. But the music is the meat here and it is wonderful. Recording quality is very good and the disc is about 60 minutes in length. If you are an Albert King and/or an SRV fan this one will be on the top of your favorites list for a long time.In Session OverviewOriginally recorded for Canadian television. Couldn't Stand the Weather ReviewThis is the first SRV album I got and it got me hooked. "Scuttle Buttin'" starts it off and starts it off right. A very high energy, catchy tune that many have tried to imitate with limited success. "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is also good and has a pretty cool video for it, too. My favorite on this one is "Honey Bee." It's a classic-style blues number with great, upbeat writing and one of the best intros I've ever heard. The bonus tracks (five of them) are also a treat for SRV fans, as you get to hear stuff the band recorded, but never released. It also has another excerpt from an interview he did in 1989. This is a very strong follow-up and should be in any blues fan's collection.
P.S. Try to watch live recordings of the band, where you get to see the energy they played with. Check reruns of Austin City Limits, or buy one of the many videos released.Couldn't Stand the Weather OverviewReissue of 1984 album with 4 bonus tracks. 2001.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Sweet Tea Review"Sweet Tea" is fast being heralded as Buddy's best CD ever. For example, the liner notes proclaim that Buddy "may have made the album of his life".
There is no doubt that Buddy pours his heart and soul into this recording. However, no musician, with the possible exception of Linda Ronstadt, wants to have a cover CD credited as "the album of his life".
Unlike Buddy's earlier CD's, "Damn Right, I've Got The Blues", "Feels Like Rain" and "Slippin' In", which all contain several Guy originals, "Sweet Tea" is a tribute CD to several of the North Mississippi Hills musicians such as, the late Junior Kimbrough, Lowell Fulsom & T-Model Ford who record(ed) for Fat Possum records. In fact, all but two of the songs are covers of these men.
The dark, brooding, often hauting and hypnotic beat of the original tunes is left intact on this CD. However, what Buddy brings to the mix is his exceptional guitar solos that are otherwise absent on the originals. Make no mistake about it, Guy's playing on the CD is exceptional and is the best he has played in a long time. If you want to hear something a little different from Buddy Guy, this is your CD.
On the other hand, I think the impoverished and often over looked Mississippi Hills musicians should be given their due as well. So, if you like this CD I would urge you to strongly consider RL Burnside's "Wish I Were In Heaven", Junior Kimbrough's "All Night Long", T-Model Ford's "She Ain't None of Your'n, Jessie Mae Hemphill's "Feelin Good" or Robert Belfour's "What's Wrong With You" all are excellent, recent CD's worth a listen.Sweet Tea OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: GUY,BUDDYTitle: SWEET TEAStreet Release Date: 05/15/2001

Johnny Winter:The Woodstock Experience (2CD) ReviewTwo discs 34 and 68 minutes each approximately. The sound is very good, especially a live recording from so long ago. The studio set has been remastered in the recent past, and is fine also.
This package contains Winter's first album for Columbia Records. It's the original album, without the "bonus" tracks which are on the latest reissue.
By now most Winter fans will already own the original record,so not much has to be said. It was a good first album, though lacking some of the fire found on his Sonobeat/Liberty Records album,"The Progressive Blues Experiment".
The live set is Winter's complete set at Woodstock. At the time he was a relative unknown-his appearance at this festival made him a star. Winter is accompanied by Tommy Shannon on bass, and "Uncle" John Turner on drums. Edgar Winter is also here, playing and singing on a number of tracks. Winter's guitar was on fire during his entire set. No matter what the tempo, his guitar playing was always scorching and his technique left quite an impression on people, especially his slide playing, which was razor-sharp yet had that "dirty " tone that was so popular. For those listeners who like blues/rock guitar, backed with some gritty vocals-this is it. Winter fans will find much to like here. His playing is close to the Sonobeat/Liberty album mentioned above. There are seven unreleased tracks-all worthwhile, the only track that's been released is "Mean Town Blues". Why these tracks were never released is a mystery. Its nice to finally have the entire set in one nice package.
The packaging is nice. Both discs are housed in a cardboard slip-case. Inside, each disc is in another cardboard sleeve, and inside that is a paper sleeve that houses the disc. The graphics are nice on all the sleeves. The original album is housed in a facsimile of the original album cover. The live disc is in a sleeve with photographs of Winter playing live. The inside paper sleeve has information on the tracks and a short essay on Woodstock. The poster is nice but not essential-especially since it's folded over several times to fit in the slip-case.
This is,possibly, one of the better sets in Sony's new Woodstock releases. Don't wait-this is worth it.Johnny Winter:The Woodstock Experience (2CD) Overview

Ultimate Collection ReviewThis is the best single disc Freddie King Collection on the market, considering that Hideaway: The best of Freddie King is out of print. Two or three selections are doubtful (Dust my broom and Sugar sweet), but mostly it is really good, combining his trademark instrumentals (Hideaway, The Stumble, etc) with wocal tracks. Freddie's sharp, melodic and intense guitar playing influenced a lot white blues guitarists - most obviously - at least to my ears - Eric Clapton on the John Mayall's Bluesbrakers with Eric Clapton album. If you like blues, or just great guitar playing (and there's some fine singing from Freddie as well), get this record.Ultimate Collection Overview

Sessions For Robert J. (CD + DVD) ReviewEric had released "Me and Mr. Johnson" only six months earlier. It was o.k., but there wasn't anything particularly compelling about it. Some songs were good, a continuation of the blues material he had previously released on "Behind the Cradle", only this time the focus was exclusively on Robert Johnson, but a few cuts were lackluster walk-throughs. In addition, the performances were entirely electric, full band efforts which was part of the reason for disappointment. Eric was too comfortable hiding behind a full band set-up. For anyone who has really "gotten it" in terms of what Robert Johnson was all about, acoustic seems the way to go - you want to get to the heart of it all - you just can't hide if it's only you and the guitar. Peter Green made the same misstep a few years ago with his own Robert Johnson compilation. It too was primarily a full band set up. But, what you really hoped for was a stripped down session with just one guy and his guitar - something that Robert Johnson was able to pull off in the 1930's, but something that wealthy white rockers nurtured on stadium rock don't seem to be comfortable with. Robert, after all, performed face-to-face with small house party audiences - obviously he had to bare it all night after night... Eric and Peter had gotten too comfortable with huge stadiums. Still... you have this hope that guys as talented as Peter Green and Eric Clapton have it in them somewhere and you just need to get them to take the chance. Is it possible?

This latest release by Clapton ("Sessions for Robert J.") continues to be exclusively about Robert Johnson songs. Yes, many of the songs are duplicated on the two CD releases ("Me and Mr. Johnson" and "Sessions for Robert J"), but each performance is different on the respective albums. In fact, "Sessions for Robert J." actually contains two different versions of "Hell Hound on my Trail" and "Love in Vain" (yet a third version of "Love in Vain" was originally released on "Me and Mister Johnson" so that there are now three completely different versions available).
O.K. so how is the new "Sessions for Robert J."?

In a word - "STUNNING!"

This is all that one could hope for and more since it is all on DVD in 5.1 Surround Sound. This album is quite a bit better than "From the Cradle". Watching Eric actually perform these songs on the TV screen is a revelation. And yes, some of it is just Eric and his guitar! But perhaps the best is the session where Eric plays with just one other guitar player - Doyle Bramlett. It is truly entertaining to watch these guys stay in step with each other on these technically difficult songs - If you have ever learned to play some of these songs in slide guitar you would know these are tough enough to just play solo!

About half of the songs are with a full band and regardless of what was said above, these are great! Yes, acoustic versions would be nice (and you can choose between electric and acoustic for "Hell Hound on My Trail"), but the full band approach on "Sessions for Robert J." does not disappoint at all! Eric pulls it off and really throws his heart into the performances - no "walk through" performances here! This is where "Sessions" outperforms the earlier "Me and Mister Johnson". There is energy on "Sessions" whereas "Me and Mister Johnson" seems more workman like. And one could safely hazard a guess to say that perhaps Eric felt the same way. After all, you have to wonder why he chose to release a second Robert Johnson album (with a huge duplication of song titles) inside of six months if he was really happy with the first effort? Well, whatever the reason, this album is great!

Some favorite songs on "Sessions":

"Terraplane Blues" - Eric and Doyle run through this song like a sharp knife through watermelon - they absolutely nail it! Worth the price of this set just to have this one song! Historical note: this song was actually performed by Eric in the same Dallas Texas hotel third floor where Johnson originally recorded it in the 1930's! In any case, Eric's vocal is simply amazing! Wow! There is a live version of Eric doing this same song solo in 1994 (a very rare performance caught on a bootleg tape - did he ever even perform it again in concert during that tour?) - it was really good and now we have the same song in much better fidelity and an even better performance! Yes, yes - thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
"Rambling on my Mind" & "Stones In My Passway" - Eric performing acoustic solo. These are basically the way one might have thought it should be done, one man with one guitar - Peter Green please take note!

"Milk Cow Blues", "Traveling Riverside Blues" & "If I had Possession Over Judgment Day" - Eric with the full band. These rock! Very intense and meant to be played loud. Sounds great on 5.1 DTS.

By the way, the least favorite song is "They're Red Hot" - an atypical song in the Johnson cannon, but Eric's version comes off as better than Robert Johnson's original! And even though it's too "happy" for a blues album, it does sound good here!

Having said all this, we have to realize that listening to the original 1930's Robert Johnson songs on scratchy old 78s is an acquired taste for some, but this is probably because few people today are willing to listen to low-fidelity recordings. Please note that the latest releases of the original "King of The Delta Blues" (volume 1 and volume 2) have been remastered (yes, I know - how many times do they need to endlessly remaster this stuff?) and this time on some tracks the vocals and bass have a clarity and presence that far exceeds both the two Columbia box set releases and even the Gold disc. A lot of the hardness in Robert's voice remains on a few tracks, but often it has been toned down a bit in the latest transfers and the bass is much higher in the mix - overall, I think it just sounds better now even if the hiss and ticks and pops are now actually more pronounced - less digital noise reduction seems to result in better fidelity here. In any case, try these most recent remasters if you had a problem with the sound quality of the sterilizing noise reduction used on the Columbia box set (which was re-remastered a second time around 1996 when the smaller box was issued - stay away from the original long box issued in 1991 which now has the worst sound available). I have learned to play several Robert Johnson songs on slide guitar and through that experience found genius not just in his execution, which of course is perfect, but also in Robert's arrangements. The simple truth is that Robert Johnson with his limited resources (poor Black man in the 1930's in the deep South) was perhaps an even a more naturally gifted musician than Eric Clapton - if that is even possible! This assessment is reinforced by Eric himself in the section in the DVD where he discusses how hard it is for him to sing in a different tempo than the guitar as Robert often effortlessly does. So take it from there...
By the way, if you go directly to the various sessions in the DVD you will miss the mini-interviews with Eric. You have to click on "play all" to get the entire presentation. I had been just clicking on the individual sessions thereby missing the interviews until I found them accidentally.
Please note that the companion CD is missing something like half of the performances included in the DVD! My solution was to make my own compilation direct from the DVD with ALL the songs - it will fit nicely on one 80 minute CD-R.
Bottom line, Eric finally does justice to his blues influences (this is even better than "From the Cradle") and created yet another classic in the process.

Sessions For Robert J. (CD + DVD) OverviewEVERY SUPERSTAR HAS A BEGINNING AND THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THEIR STORY! THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION OF THEIR EARLY CAREERS! 38 INCREDIBLE TRACKS. ONE INCREDIBLE LOW PRICE! DIGITALLY REMASTERED.

Power of the Pontchartrain ReviewEvery time you buy a Tab Benoit's CD you can be sure that you will not be disappointed. And, as always, the brand new "Power of the Pontchartrain" confirms that rule. Excellent material played extremely well by Tab and the accompanying band. This time the "Louisiana's Leroux" are the supporting band and this is not irrelevant to the great final result. In fact the band spent several years, as explained in the linear notes, with one of the greatest Louisiana blues player of all time Mr. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. The album is really very good and I would take the risk to say that from my point of view this is Tab's best effort so far. Tab's voice sounds great as always and the guitar playing is absolutely fantastic throughout the entire CD. The excellent and clean production and sound of Telarc Blues deserve a mention too. All the eleven songs in the menu are very strong and you will not be tempted to use the skip bottom of your CD player at any time, however I believe that a special mention is deserved by the great cover of the Stephen Stills' classic "For what it's worth", by the deep blues "Midnight and lonesome" that for me is the best cut of the bunch, and by the two mid tempo "Somebody got to go" and "Addicted". Very highly recommended for all the blues lovers.Power of the Pontchartrain OverviewIn the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the idea ofblues from the bayoutakes on a whole new meaning. Guitarist Tab Benoit has seen and experienced the suffering first-hand this past year as his home-state of Louisiana struggles to clean up and rebuild. Armed with gritty guitar chops, a powerful vocal attack and insightful songcraft, this self-proclaimed new kid from the old schoolbears witness the best way he knows howdelivering a passionate and heartfelt brand of Louisiana blues that connects audiences worldwide to the plight of his beleaguered homeland.

You & Me ReviewThe new album of Joe Bonamassa is very good however, just to point it out from the very beginning, it is not as good as his previous two. In my opinion it remains a couple of steps behind the absolutely marvellous Blues Deluxe and the following Had To Cry Today. Joe, as he explains in the linear notes, wanted to do a blues album this time, and he takes inspiration once again mainly from the sound of the 1970 British blues school. The sound of the album waves from the opening delta blues style of a solid cover of an old Charlie Patton's song, to a couple of Chicago blues, from an acoustic country blues to a jazz tune. Best song of the album is the cover of the classic So Many Roads however as in Tea For One, taken from the Zeppelin repertoire, and in Asking Around For You the use of electronic strings instead of maybe a nice carpet of B3 doesn't do for me. A special mention is deserved by the 12 year-old LD Miller who plays a nice harmonica solo in Your Funeral And My Trial, really very good. Having said that Joe's playing is once again fantastic throughout the entire CD and the band very solid, in my opinion he has also improved his singing. I am looking forward to having the chance to see him playing live in London next September and I am sure that the live version of many of the songs included in his new album will be excellent! You & Me OverviewYou And Me (featuring Jason Bonham on drums) marks the debut collaboration of Bonamassa and producer Kevin Shirley and is a powerful fusion of big rock and swampy blues, You And Me gets much of its inspiration from such masters as Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker. Bonamassa delivers all the excitement and power of his electrifying live performances while mixing it up with dynamic music choices; from hard to soft, electric to acoustic, a music roller coaster - and just as fun!

On The Jimmy Reed Highway ReviewAs a Jimmy Vaughan fan, I love his understated style. His clear and subtle style of playing is a joy, allowing the listener to enjoy the song without being overwhelmed by one guy's playing. Well suited to collective efforts like this.
I had never listened to Omar Dykes until now, but the man has great range. On some songs his growl reminds me of Howlin' Wolf, and on others he becomes more melodic. A perfect complement to Jimmy Vaughan.
Add to those two the contributions of Kim Wilson and James Cotton on harp, Lou Ann Barton on vocals, and it is a great blend of talent. And the Jimmy Reed music is the perfect place for the group to play around in. It sounds as if the group was really having fun while making this. It makes me smile while listening.
I liked every track on this CD, which is rare for me- usually I find at least a couple duds. This CD is phenomenal, and a perfect play for the deck on a nice summer night with a cold beverage, watching the sun go down. A classic effort.

So, It's Like That ReviewJoe Bonamassa's sophmore effort holds a few surprises. The first is a slight shift in musical direction. Much like Jeff Healey, Joe opted for a less overt blues approach to his second album. The result is 62 minutes of powerful rock with a focus on original songwriting, strong hooks, and a broader musical landscape. Both Bonamassa's guitar playing and vocals are undeniably sensational, and his band is as tight and unrelenting as ever. Their spectacular performances run the gamot from hard edged grooves ("Lie #1", "No Slack"), to lighter acoustic shades ("Waiting For Me", "Never Say Goodbye", "Mountain Time"), to searing guitar ("Pain and Sorrow"), to hard rock ("Takin' The Hit", "The Hard Way"), and a few points in between. For those fans looking for more straight forward blues tunes, I'm afraid only the title track offers this in the form of a mid-tempo shuffle. But that aside, this is a fantastic album that, on its own would be worthy of four stars. But that's where the second surprise comes in.
Originally, when I bought this a year ago, Amazon listed the second disk as a DVD of "A New Day Yesterday - Live". Since that was all the information offered I assumed it was a promo clip showing Joe and the band performing the title track from his debut album. What this actually is is a phenominal full length live performance taped back on December 21, 2001 while touring behind "A New Day Yesterday". This blinding show displays Bonamassa's blazing chops and mind-numbing tone to a tee. I've played this thing more times than I can count, it's that good. In fact, I was SO impressed I actually bought the same wine red Les Paul Classic Joe starts the show with (yes I know...insane. But you guitar players out there know exactly what I'm talking about). Here're the details:
Cradle Rock - Steppin' Out/Rice Pudding - A New Day Yesterday - Miss You Hate You - Walk In My Shadows - I Know where I Belong - Color & Shape - Trouble Waiting - If Heartaches Were Nickels - Don't Burn Down That Bridge - guitar solo - Are You Experienced? - Had to Cry Today. The total performance runs around 1 hour 52 minutes. Extras include a music video for Miss You, Hate You and a 5-6 minute VH1-style bio. There's also a photo gallery. The DVD by itself is easily worth five stars.
I know there are a lot of fans out there who have very strict views on blues/rock guitarists and what they should and shouldn't do. If you feel you fit into this category you might not like the CD so much but I think you'll love the DVD. It certainly delivers everything you're looking for (assuming you enjoy live concert DVD's of course!). If your tastes are a bit broader, I think this 2 disk set is a grand slam at twice the price. Absolutely.

Live at the Regal ReviewAs has been noted, this is one of the essential albums, one of the records that everyone is supposed to have like John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, like Robert Johnson, like the music Billie Holiday made with Lester Young for Columbia, like Louis's Hot 5s and Hot 7s, like Elvis's Sun Sessions.
Beyond that, this is something that has become increasingly rare, a live blues recording where the music is played for blues people, African American working class and middle class blues people in an urban center. This all about singing and swinging and jiving and talking to the audience and the audience talking back.
When I was in Mississippi in the mid 1960s doing civil rights work, I met Blues People who loved BB King who didn't know that he played the guitar. The expression always was and still is 'BLUES SINGER," not blues guitarist. He sang the blues the way they needed to listen to and in a Blues People venue the folks will talk back to him too.
My favorite, classic moment of the blues dialog here is in "It's my own fault baby" where Riley sings "I gave you seven children, and now you want to give 'em back." All the sistas in the audience scream. Gruffer sounds came from the men.
What is essential to blues performance for BLUES PEOPLE is the constant dialog between the singer and the audience that is the heart of the native blues experience. The dialog isn't about the impeccable guitar playing on this record, or the totally righteous playing of the band, or even the fine voice of Riley B. King here, but it is about what the words the lyrics speak to the lives of the audience, and what the audience responds to the singer. That's the center of blues, not heavy guitar licks that the post-folk-post rock blues fan thinks is the essence of heavy blues.
It's a shame the audience for the blues has almost disappeared, that blues stars no longer play in big "Chitlin' Circuit" theaters like the Regal, the Apollo, the Howard, the old non hippie Fillmore, or that you can't see Riley or Bobby Blue Bland in smoky little night clubs in the ghetto.
Perhaps, I am showing my age here, because time has to roll on. I am sure that night at the Regal there was someone who could remember when the sistas and their men would be shouting back at things Bessie Smith, or Big Maceo and Tampa Read, Lonnie Johnson, or Memphis Minnie had sung to them from that same stage without the electric instruments.
The real Black blues when it was based among us, was about singing, about commentary. For even the greatest guitarists like Riley, Lonnie Johnson, T-Bone Walker, Johnny Lee Hooker, Guitar Slim, the guitar playing and the band were just ways to emphasize how the to talk to audience. This brings to mind that great Betty Carter Album, "The Audience and Betty Carter." This is the Blues People and Riley King talking to each other. That's priceless, get it, and listen to it.Live at the Regal OverviewThe recording of B.B.'s 1964 performance at the Regal was hailed as an instant classic upon its release, and it's still often named as the best live blues album ever . It's been remastered from the original tapes and includes both the original and updated liner notes. Songs include Please Love Me; You Upset Me Baby; Woke Up This Mornin'; Every Day I Have the Blues; It's My Own Fault , and more from the King of the Blues.

Showdown ReviewIt's nothing short of awesome to hear these three guitar greats come together. Albert Collins was one of the BEST blues guitarists in the world. Any recording which features him is going to be worthwhile. Robert Cray is very good too and has a wonderful voice. Johnny Copeland contributes some nice vocals and guitar licks, but I'm not as familiar with him as I am Albert and Robert. There are only two downsides to this wonderful CD. First, the sound quality isn't as good as it could be. It definitely sounds its age. I know that Alligator is not a huge record label, but it would be nice if they could remaster and rerelease some of their titles such as this one. Second drawback is that the album is too short! It's so good that you don't want it to end. It's not much longer than half an hour. But it is good stuff. If you like guitar-based blues, BUY this CD!Showdown OverviewAlligator's Grammy-winning, best-selling title of all time (which has sold over 285,000 units), remastered on CD with the added bonus track "Something To Remember You By". Universally recognized as one of the greatest blues albums of all time. A celebrated studio "cutting contest" between three legendary blues guitarists. Albert and Johnny are sadly no longer with us, but Robert Cray continues to record and tour, and is one of the best-selling blues artists in history with over 2.3 million career units scanned.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Texas Flood ReviewWhat an amazing album. "Love Struck Baby" starts it off and is one of their most famous songs. "Testify" is one of the greatest songs Stevie ever did. It shows you his rough, lightning-quick style and why so many became imitators of his playing. "Rude Mood" and "Lenny" are great, but are even better on the Carnegie Hall album for arrangement. "Texas Flood" is a great example of classic blues writing and another favorite of the masses. Plus, the five bonus tracks are great. Some live stuff and even part of an interview Stevie did in 1989, which continues on the other re-issued albums. Since this is the debut album, this is a great place to start a collection. And you will start one if you buy this, believe me.
P.S. Try to watch live recordings of the band, where you get to see the energy they play with. Check reruns of Austin City Limits, or buy one of the many videos released.Texas Flood OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: Popular MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 23-MAR-1999

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble: Greatest Hits ReviewI gave this 5 stars based only on the quality of the music. I really wouldn't recommend this CD. Anyone who likes Stevie Ray should buy his albums instead. There are only four of them. If you have all of SRV's albums then this CD is worth keeping around only for the groovy version of the Beatles' Taxman. This is only a tiny sampling of the great music that Stevie Ray has to offer. This will leave you unfulfilled. You'll take this disc out of your player wanting more. I would recommend SRV's debut, Texas Flood, for anyone looking to get into his music.Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble: Greatest Hits Overview

Sloe Gin ReviewIf you've heard about Joe Bonamassa and are wondering what all of the excitement is about, this is probably not the best place to start. This seems to be the fist release in Joe's catalog to create dissent amongst his fan base. It's not bad. It's just not great.
Joe is one of the most passionate an inspired artists to come along in years. He is a true gem for fans of blues rock. A unique and powerful vocalist with an astonishing command of his guitar. Anyone who has seen him live can attest, his explosive musicianship is jaw-dropping. As a performer Joe is humble, passionate, uncompromising, unapologetic and sincere. On his worst night he will stop you dead in your tracks and command your attention. At his best he's downright hypnotizing.
This CD doesn't come close to capturing that experience. It IS very well crafted. The performances are soulful and nuanced. The production values are impeccable. There are some nice moments. It's also rather boring, calculated, self-conscious and restrained. This is Joe's second collaboration with producer Kevin Shirley. Many of his fans are hoping it's his last. Though they wouldn't dare speak of it on the official fan forum. Just look at some of the defensive comments posted here on amazon to get an idea of the zealotry.
After hearing all of Joe's previous releases for the first time I simply couldn't wait to hear them again. I've forced myself to listen to Sloe Gin many times in an effort to identify what's missing. What's missing is the excitement of Joe as a performer. The excitement that earned him his reputation and grass-roots, word-of-mouth fan base. I hope and expect this is just a transition. And I can't wait to see him again live. I know it will be better than this disc.
If you are just getting started with Joe try Blues Deluxe, Had to Cry Today or any of his live releases (DVDs). As for Sloe Gin?... The best I can say is that it doesn't suck.Sloe Gin OverviewNamed best blue grass guitarist in guitar player magazines 2007 readers choice awards, blues rock guitar virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his new solo album, Sloe Gin, on August 21. Bonamassa's sixth studio release re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley who produced 2006's You & Me, which debuted at #1 on Billboard's Blues chart in June of last year.

Buddy's Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy ReviewTo the fan from Vienna, VA: Buddy is not in his 70's. Actually, as of the date I'm writing this, he is 63. Regardless, no one I've ever seen packs as much energy into a live performance as Mr. Guy. And I recommend to anyone who hasn't seen him live, do it before it's too late. He truly is the master!!
Anyway, about this CD. It is a compilation of some of best tracks off his Silvertone recordings of the 90's, plus 5 previously unreleased tracks. Definitely for the more casual fan, who doesn't own "Damn Right I've Got the Blues", "Feels Like Rain", "Slippin' In"(the best of the individual studio Silvertone recordings), and "Heavy Love". Also with the Silvertone label, Buddy released a live album w/the Saturday Live Band called "The Real Deal". The only track on "Buddy's Baddest" from "The Real Deal" is "Let Me Love You". "The Real Deal" is definitely worth buying separate because live is how Mr. Guy is meant to be heard.
Overall, I would say "Buddy's Baddest" is a good introduction to Buddy Guy. If you love it, then follow up with "The Real Deal", the individual Silvertone recordings, "Stone Crazy", and "DJ Play My Blues". Also, you can't go wrong with "Live at Montreaux" or "Drinking TNT and Smoking Dynamite"(better), both live recordings with harmonica legend Jr. Wells.....Enjoy!Buddy's Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: Blues MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 15-JUN-1999

Family Style ReviewFrom the opening line from Stevie, "Roll, and I'll just feel something," the album is about feeling. Stevie's playing was effortless, and some even called him God's Radio, but his playing was always better when his big brother, Jimmie, was with him. Even though they weren't always in the studio together, laying down individual tracks to be mixed later, the magic is still there, and it shines when the brothers are playing together. Stevie reached the apex of his career with this album and "In Step" turning out the best music of his life, but lurking in the shadow, brother Jimmie came to his own here too. Jimmie voice makes its first appearance on an album as he sings. At times it is nearly impossible to tell which of the brothers is playing, but they each have a distinctive sound, which fit together perfectly as brothers should.
Every song on this album is spectacular. From the opening "Hard to Be" with Stevie on lead vocals and a cool theme over Jimmie's rhythm. Upbeat and fun. Next, it's Jimmie's turn to sing on "White Boots", with a slight Country flare. Who knew he had such a great voice? Stevie steps in with his distinctive sound and plays a great solo. They repeat the formula again with "Good Texan". The best song on the album is "Tick Tock". Just perfect playing from the brothers, and Jimmie's spoken intro sets the tone of the song, and Stevie sings it beautifully. A strong message in today's world. The brothers rock out with "Telephone Song" pulling out Wah-Wah solos and excellent rhythm. The album ends with the appropriately named "Brothers", an instrumental played on one guitar being passed back and forth between the two Vaughans. The brothers pass licks back and forth for five minutes. Powerful and haunting.
This is one of the greatest albums, and is a work of art. It is the album that defined when both brothers came into their own. It was one of Stevie's best performances, and it was a milestone where Jimmie reached the next plateau becoming a truly great player. There is real magic between the brothers, and "Family Style" showcases that magic. Unfortunately, Stevie passed away shortly after recording this album. After a few years, Jimmie stepped back into the recording studio for "Strange Pleasures" picking up where he left off after this album. The brothers will live on through this album.Family Style OverviewJapanese only paper sleeve pressing. Sony. 2009.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Art of Bottleneck Slide Guitar ReviewSam Mitchell's playing is a throw back to the simpler musical life we enjoyed in the late sixties. His clean performance of the great slide tunes of the 20th Century make this CD a classic. If you play slide guitar at all, this is a must have for your collection. Stephan Grossman, the guitar educator, has devoted almost half his Slide Guitar book directly from the tunes on this CD (tab and notation both). A new Sam Mitchell album has justed been released (Oct'00) so keep you eye out for that one also.Art of Bottleneck Slide Guitar Overview

Live In Chicago ReviewThis is the long anticipated follow-up, live album, from Kenny Wayne Shepherd, after "Ten Days Out, Blues From the Backroads" CD/DVD Combo, from a few years back. The clarity of the sound on this CD, is especially good for a live album. The music is "rich" & "deep", because you get several, legendary, blues musicians, accompaning Kenny Wayne. The roster of blues musicians include: Hubert Sumlin (a living legend), Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Buddy Flett, Bryan Lee, Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon (of SRV's Double Trouble), Noah Hunt, Riley Osburn, and Scott Nelson.
From the beginning to the end, the album is full of excitement and entergy. The Band is really "into it", and the crowd is definitely loving it. It gives you one of those "almost like being there", feelings.
Featured tracks include "Deja Voodoo", "Blue on Black", and "I'm a King Bee", but all the songs are great. This is definitely album oriented live music. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one great, electric, blues guitar player. The liner notes include a great introduction by Kenny Wayne, plus there are photos, of the blues musicians performing on this live cd. Plus, you get some background notes, on the featured legendary blues artists in this CD. You will not be disappointed in this live cd for sure. Thanks!!!Live In Chicago Overview
