In Session ReviewRarely does an album get released where teacher and student aren't too shy to cut loose. I didn't have high expectations for this one but this release is clearly an an exception to the rule. AK and SRV are having a great time and while SRV is in awe of the master bluesman he doesn't take the back seat on this one because around Albert, that WOULD be disrespectful. AK and SRV go at it with great respect for each other and the music. The result is a firey session that is sure to satisfy every fan of these two artists. SRV is clearly the only guitar player to copy AK's licks perfectly and it is a real treat to hear them together. The CD is peppered with dialogue between to two and AK acknowledges SRV as the future of blues as if to pass the torch. But the music is the meat here and it is wonderful. Recording quality is very good and the disc is about 60 minutes in length. If you are an Albert King and/or an SRV fan this one will be on the top of your favorites list for a long time.In Session OverviewOriginally recorded for Canadian television. Couldn't Stand the Weather ReviewThis is the first SRV album I got and it got me hooked. "Scuttle Buttin'" starts it off and starts it off right. A very high energy, catchy tune that many have tried to imitate with limited success. "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is also good and has a pretty cool video for it, too. My favorite on this one is "Honey Bee." It's a classic-style blues number with great, upbeat writing and one of the best intros I've ever heard. The bonus tracks (five of them) are also a treat for SRV fans, as you get to hear stuff the band recorded, but never released. It also has another excerpt from an interview he did in 1989. This is a very strong follow-up and should be in any blues fan's collection.
P.S. Try to watch live recordings of the band, where you get to see the energy they played with. Sky Is Crying ReviewThat's not hyperbole. Man, I still remember it. It was 1995. I was browsing in a record store and came upon this album. I didn't know who the hell it was-- it wasn't like anything I would usually buy-- but I decided to try sometehing different. I was blown right out of my pants. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I played the tape so many times in 6 months that it started to wear out. It made me want to learn to play, even though I never thought about playing the guitar before-- it was that good, that moving.
Every song on this CD is amazing. How can you talk about good and better when you've reached this level of mastery? You can't. It's like asking which van Gogh painting is your favorite. Still, could you ever buy a van Gogh for under $20?
That being said, there is one song on this CD that is maybe the best pure electric guitar ever recorded: "Little Wing" is a masterpiece among masterpieces. It has it all: such feeling in the slow sections that you cry, such blistering guitar in the power sections that you are stunned, and such subtle mastery throughout that you can hear different nuances each time you listen to the song. Just check out when and how he uses the natural harmonics-- and how he even throws in the Wes Montgomery Jazz/octave work-- each in exactly the right place. This guy wasn't just a guitar maniac-- he was a Master, with a capital "M"-- and on top of it all, he was a wonderful, caring man.
Putting "Life by the Drop" as the last song on the compilation is almost too much for me to handle-- knowing that, when that last note finishes resonating, there will NEVER be any more...
I cry every time I see his bio on MTV-- when I think about that helicopter crash.
There is something wrong with a world in which a man like this gets only 35 years.

Couldn't Stand the Weather (Legacy Edition) ReviewTwo discs 79, 75 minutes each approximately. The digitally remastered sound is crisp and clean. The 24 page booklet goes into some depth on SRV and his music. Comments from his rhythm section (DOUBLE TROUBLE) give added depth, along with an overview by a knowledgeable writer from Guitar World. There are also photos of SRV and a 2 page spread of various advertising items to promote the album-a nice touch.
First I must confess that for me, this (original) album still stands as possibly Stevie Ray Vaughan's finest release. While valid arguments could be made for other albums, this set of songs gets to the heart of who Vaughan was. Blessed with a ragged, worn sounding voice and large hands, when Vaughan sang you knew he wasn't kidding. But its when he wrapped that big hand around the neck of his guitar that you knew he was the real deal when it came to the blues. The music was intense, and just seemed to pour out of him ("The Things That I used To Do") in a desperate, pleading torrent of sound. Yet he was capable of playing Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell/Joe Pass jazz-like passages ("Stang's Swang"), intense guitar driven instrumentals ("Scuttle Buttin'"-which has its origins from the great guitarist Lonnie Mack, "Wham!"-a Lonnie Mack composition, and Freddie King's "Hide Away"), and moody songs ("Lenny"), which show how sensitive and mature his playing could be. This album is proof that SRV was a truly multi-faceted musician. and could (and would) take his music wherever it suited him.
The first disc, which includes the original album, also contains a number of tracks (8) that have been previously released on other albums. Is this another example of a record company padding out an already fine album with tracks we're all familiar with? Perhaps. Or is it an attempt to give, in one package, a better picture of just who SRV was? Whether you decide to purchase this for the live disc and the remastered original album, which includes 3 previously unreleased tracks (along with the 8 previously released songs) is something every listener will have to decide for themselves. While I don't like padding an already fine album with tracks I own elsewhere, their inclusion does help paint a better picture of Vaughan's music at this stage. The 3 unreleased studio tracks, "The Sky Is Crying" (an awesome trio version), "Boot Hill", and an alternate of "Stang's Swang" (a trio version different from the original), are welcome additions for those (like me) who can't get enough of SRV during this period.
The second disc, live from 1984 (when the original album was released), is, in a nut shell, full of the guitar work that Vaughan is revered for. Its also where the rhythm section (DOUBLE TROUBLE) proves how valuable they were to Vaughan's sound. In this live context Chris Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon (bass) play intuitively as equals, not just backing musicians for Vaughan's guitar. His combination lead/rhythm style, his crying, pleading, bent notes, his hurt-sounding sustain, and his searing single notes that sound as if they could pierce you like a knife-point are all over this disc. From slow blues ("Tin Pan Alley"), to shuffles ("Love Struck Baby"), to fiery guitar pyrotechnics ("Voodoo Child (Slight Return"), Vaughan's command of his guitar (and the blues) is evident. Tracks like Guitar Slim's "The Things That I Use To Do" (whose original 1950's version is smokin'), "Texas Flood" (by the late Larry Davis-a good blues singer/guitarist) and "Couldn't Stand The Weather" help show SRV as one of the best blues players from the modern era. Add some uptempo tracks along with a bit of funk and you have a complete picture of just who Stevie Ray Vaughan was, and what his music was all about.
So, if you can get past the already released tracks, and think of them as completing a better picture of SRV, this updated release, along with the live second disc is certainly worth purchasing. Sony Records has certainly priced this set at a fair (low) price, which is added incentive. In Step Review"In Step" is often cited by critics as Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album. And his playing on this album is actually a bit more economical, maybe even a bit more mannered, than on his earlier releases...whether or not that's a good thing is a matter of taste, I suppose.
The production is a bit more slick than usual as well, the tone of Vaughan's guitar is cleaner, and a keyboard player and occational horns have been added to the mix, but that's not to say that Stevie Ray Vaughan had gotten soft on his final solo album before his tragic death in 1990 - he just turned a little bit more towards rock rather than blues.
"In Step" opens with a blistering rocker, "The House Is Rockin'", followed by the bluesy "Crossfire", which features a superb solo by Vaughan.
"Tightrope" ventures into hard rock territory, but Stevie Ray's cover of Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby" is genuine blues-rock, and it is followed by a good reading of Buddy Guy's slow, tortured blues "Leave My Girl Alone". Vaughan didn't quite have the pipes to match the intensity of Guy's original, but he does a fine job with what he has, and the guitar playing is superb as usual.
"Travis Walk" is a funky, up-tempo instrumental with some great drumming by Chris Layton (who, incidentally, used to play drums for Buddy Guy and Lightnin' Hopkins). "Wall Of Denial" is pretty well known, but it is perhaps one of the lesser tracks on this album, with some fine guitar playing but not much in the way of either hooks or a real "groove" to grab a hold of the listener.
"Scratch n' Sniff", however, is a fine up-tempo rock song with some excellent boogie piano fills by keyboardist Reese Wynans, and a great solo by Vaughan.
Stevie Ray Vaughan can't quite pull off Howlin' Wolf's "Love Me Darlin' (May I Have A Talk With You)", but if you aren't familiar with the original, this version will actually sound pretty great, I guess. And finally, the original "In Step" album winds down with the excellent nine-minute instrumental "Rivera Paradise", a slow, moody piece.
The five excellent bonus tracks begin with a short interview snippet. The remaining four songs are all live performances: "The House Is Rockin'" and "Let Me Love You Baby" from "In Step", "Texas Flood" from Vaughan's 1983 debut album of the same name, and "Life Without You" from "Soul To Soul".
Stevie Ray Vaughan was a terrific live performer, and it's pure joy to listen to the raw, fiery live versions of the two songs from this album, which to me work better than the originals.
Highly recommended, as are all Vaughan's studio albums (although I don't agree with those who call it his best).

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble ReviewWell it is finally here. The much anticipated Stevie Ray Vaughan box set. For most SRV fans, this will be a satisfying set. Of course some of us would like to have seen much more unreleased material included and less of the album version stuff. But we all know the powers that be had to appeal not just to us SRV freaks but to the casual listener as well. No problem. I think this box set offers a nice balance for all. Tracks run in chronological order beginning in 1977 with only one cut from the Cobras days (I wish there were more) and ends on disc three with a few tunes from the second to last show in Alpine Valley.
More than half of the material is officially previously unreleased and is high quality live and outtake material. Many of the great live tracks like the Timothy White show version of "Dirty Pool" and the MTV tracks are here too. These will be a great surprise for those that haven't heard them before. The live cuts are from some of the best shows like Montreux (even a little of the booing after Texas Flood is there), Houston, Austin, Philadelphia, New Mexico, Alpine Valley, etc.; though I am surprised none of the excellent Tokyo, Japan 1985 show is included. In addition, there are a few cuts of other artists on whose albums Stevie Ray appeared.
For the hard-core collector you probably already have almost everything. However, the good news is that the quality on these discs blows away anything you most likely have on a boot. The fourth disc is a thirty or so minute DVD with five never-aired and never-issued performances from the television program Austin City Limits, recorded on October 10, 1989. I am not sure why these five tunes were cut from the commercial DVD release but I guess it might be because he broke a string on a tune or two during the performance. Who knows they are good regardless. Also included is a 72-page booklet of pictures, session details, essays, discography, and quotes from other musicians and friends. My favorite quote is on the last page, "The world misses his music, but I miss my brother." -Jimmie Vaughan.Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble OverviewStevie's monster chops, huge sound and deep soul won adoration from rock fans and blues stars around the world, all of whom will want to pick up this long-awaited boxed set: 18 live and studio tracks plus 36 unissued recordings (VERY early stuff plus live versions of Cold Shot; Lovestruck Baby; Crossfire; The Sky Is Crying; Tightrope , and more) including a whole DVD of never-aired Austin City Limits performances! Over four hours of the late, great SRV on 3 CDs plus a 72-page book.

Texas Flood ReviewWhat an amazing album. "Love Struck Baby" starts it off and is one of their most famous songs. "Testify" is one of the greatest songs Stevie ever did. It shows you his rough, lightning-quick style and why so many became imitators of his playing. "Rude Mood" and "Lenny" are great, but are even better on the Carnegie Hall album for arrangement. "Texas Flood" is a great example of classic blues writing and another favorite of the masses. Plus, the five bonus tracks are great. Some live stuff and even part of an interview Stevie did in 1989, which continues on the other re-issued albums. Since this is the debut album, this is a great place to start a collection. And you will start one if you buy this, believe me.

Anyone who likes Stevie Ray should buy his albums instead. There are only four of them. If you have all of SRV's albums then this CD is worth keeping around only for the groovy version of the Beatles' Taxman. This is only a tiny sampling of the great music that Stevie Ray has to offer. This will leave you unfulfilled. You'll take this disc out of your player wanting more. Real Deal: Greatest Hits 1 ReviewI own many SRV CDs but needed this one to have in my car at all times. Some of his best music is on this CD and it is great to have it handy on one CD. If you own a collection of SRV music this is not really needed unless you want a travel CD like I do. I find it necessary to have one. I mourn for him every time I play this CD and find it difficult to accept the fact that we will never hear the music we could have had if he had not left us so young. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at the El Mocambo 1983 (1983) ReviewThere is nothing like seeing great blues in a small club. Stevie has done a lot of great live work (except while in the depths of his drug abuse), but this video is the pinnacle of what he was capable of. This small club in Toronto, with rowdy fans has more energy and fire than any arena, stadium or theatre could match.
This was also a musical high point of Stevie's career. He was older than the "In the Beginning" disc (also taken from a small club), and his playing reflects it. He was more fluid and confident, and you can see that he was REALLY feeling "it" the night of the El Mocambo show. I have never heard or seen a better rendition of Texas Flood. I have never even seen a beter blues guitar performance by anyone on any song compared to it. The versions of Tell Me, Wham!, So Excited, Testify, Voodoo Chile, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Lenny also are the best I have heard from any recording (official or bootleg) of Stevie's.
As for the DVD, it could use some work. I noticed, in comparison with the VHS version, the mixers have brought the volume down a bit on Stevie's guitar, while making the low end sounds more prominent. This takes away from the power of Stevie's performance a bit. They also still have not included the version of Little Wing that was performed right before Third Stone From the Sun! Please! Include it, I will buy the DVD again! On a bright note for the DVD, the interview included is quite interesting, with Tommy and Chris' thoughts and relflections on Stevie and the night of the El Mocambo show.
All in all, I would still get the DVD over the VHS copy. But regardless, every fan of the blues, Stevie, and/or guitar should buy this video. Ever hear Eric Clapton describe Stevie as an open channel, in which musical ideas just flowed through him? Vol. 1 includes sixteen of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's best and best-known songs, including "Pride & Joy", "Cold Shot", the sizzling high-octane blues "Texas Flood", and the rollicking "The House Is Rocking", and here you get sixteen more.
The quality is every bit as high as on volume one, and if the songs are slightly less well known, they're certainly no less excellent. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 (2004) ReviewAfter reading for years about Stevie Ray's rejection in 1982 at the hands of the Montreux audience, I was both excited and a bit apprehensive upon the release of this DVD, knowing it would afford me the opportunity to experience the realism of the event. I've forced myself to believe that the booing was directed more at what the crowd perceived as a pretentiousness on the part of SRV, with the cowboy hat, boots, chest tattoo, and the fact that Stevie was certainly not a conventional or mainstream blues performer. Being a relatively young, not yet 28 year old white man probably didn't help either.
But as I watch the 1982 show, I am absolutely dumbstruck by the crowd's reaction. Yes, there are obviously some players in the crowd who recognize the mastery of Stevie's technique, and they initially cheer rather boisterously and with great approval. The cheering only seemed to anger the "purists" who booed all the more loudly and who seemed to have made the final word by the conclusion of SRV's set.
If you can place yourself in the moment, the final shot of Stevie walking off backstage is heartbreaking, showing bewilderment, discouragement, anger - I can't imagine what was going through his mind - he had just played his heart out!
Most of us know the rest of the story and Stevie's incredible success at bringing his music to a mass audience. What '82 Montreux perhaps shows best is how difficult it can be for anyone to present a unique and original approach to a traditional musical idiom like the Blues.
I initially intended to write a scathing indictment of the Montreux crowd. I'll just leave it at this - Frank Zappa once said that most people wouldn't recognize good music if it bit them in the ass. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live From Austin, Texas (1995) ReviewWow. I had several of their CD's but had never seen a live performance. This video changed that forever. SRV and Double Trouble (DT) appeared twice on Austin City Limits, once in 1983 and again in 1989. The 1983 show highlights SRV as he is beginning to make a name for himself. Already well know to the Austin Blues scene, DT is only three guys but what a sound they put out. SRV is tremendous in Pride and Joy, a powerful Texas Flood (Stevie actually gets Number 1 to growl! ) and his early trademark Voodoo Chile (that's child without the "d"). These three alone are worth the price of admission. The last 2/3 of the tape are from the 1989 show. Now Stevie and the band are cleaned up and keyboardist Reese Wynans adds his extra dimension to the music. Some classic DT tracks are on this portion of the tape. Stevie's solos are mature and entrancing. My favorites in this section are a 7-minute long Cold Shot where Stevie's lead is pure magic, and Riviera Paradise. A bonus at the end of the tape: the Little Wing video with shots of Blues greats from the past and present. Taken all-in-all, this is my most cherished music video. If you're in any way a Blues fan, you'll come to love this video too. Each musician performs his own incredible piece and the film also includes each performer's reflections on Stevie and all culminating to an incredible blues guitar jam with each musician having a solo. Filled with beautiful slides, riffs and solos and heartfelt thoughts each artist pays tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan in his own way.
