Rush - Rush in Rio (2003) ReviewI originally gave this three stars but after listening to the entire concert I raised it to four. There are definitely some sound problems early on but they were pretty much resolved by about 25 minutes into this 2 hour and 50 minute concert. It was apparant there was no sound check and the sound engineers had to make adjustments as the band played on. They were successful however and for the most part the sound is fairly good. Rush puts on a tremendous show playing songs from throughout their career. I would recommend this for all Rush fans as well as anyone wanting to see a great band.

Fourplay: Live in Capetown (2008) ReviewFor smooth jazz fans Fourplay, Live in Cape Town is a must-have. Bob, Nathan, Larry, and Harvey are all at their best as they play their standards. The sound quality is perfect, especially for those who have DTS playback on their AVRs. The stage is beautifully lit and the audience is really in to the performance. Joni Mitchell - Woman of Heart and Mind: A Life Story (2003) ReviewThis is a sensitive and beautifully made documentary that I recommend highly.
Joni is one of my favorite musicians. I have been listening to her on a regular basis for over 30 years. As a result, my expectations for this kind of film were high, and overall I was pleased with what I saw.
By far the most appealling part of this documentatary is the wonderful archival footage of a young Joni doing a number of her great early songs. This material simply shimmers with an almost other worldly glow. The retelling of the writing of her song Woodstock all but had me in tears, it was so moving and evocative.
The commentary by people who knew her well, such as David Crosby, Graham Nash, David Geffin, and others, is thoughtful and very enlightening. Recent footage from an interview with Joni herself is also very engaging.
Ultimately I would like to read a really long, really thorough biography that would explain all the complicated details that make up this extraordinary woman's life. There just wasn't enough room to dig into some of the most interesting transitions in her complicated life in this beautifully made, two hour long film. I still hunger for more information.
Joni is such an intelligent woman, and many of the decisions in her later life would make interesting material for a more in depth exploration. Her relationship to jazz, the development of breakthrough albums such as Hejira and Mingus, her personal thoughts on other musicians, etc. All of this would be interesting to read about in more depth.
But one needs to recoginize the limitations of the genre. You can only do so much in a documentary film. And certainly one understands why there was so much focus on her early career, given the almost transcendent power of the early archival footage. The early Joni was a being from another planet, or some parallel idealized universe, almost impossibly beautiful and talented. Given the nature of this early footage, it is easy to forget that she became more interesting as she grew older.
Overally, this is excellent work, a must see for any one who really loves Joni's work and wants to know more about her.
(If one gives every film that one really likes 5 stars, then how can you highlight those truly stellar films that all but change our lives. This is a great film, but I can only bring myself to give it 4 stars. Patty Griffin: Live From the Artists Den (2007) ReviewThis DVD seems to have a very clear mission -- to showcase both the exceptional talent and the endearing qualities of Patty Griffin. I think it succeeds well in this mission. It nicely blends many of the songs performed by Ms. Griffin during a special February 2007 concert at a converted synagogue in New York City with short excerpts of an interview of Ms. Griffin conducted before the concert. Each interview excerpt is timed so that its content fits nicely in the sequence of the songs performed. During the best of those excerpts, Ms. Griffin notes that she goes through a brief mourning period after she records a song adding that her songs "do have a life of their own. I mean they're mine for a little while and I know what they are to me, when I have them, initially, and then they go out into the world and it's completely . . . it's a personal experience for every listener so, um, they don't belong to me anymore, you know . . .". That sentence fades immediately into the blue-lighted stage for the first note of "When It Don't Come Easy", a powerful song, as many of hers are, that certainly has a special meaning to her, but is clearly open to many potential personal meanings for the listener.
A special moment occurs when Ms. Griffin, alone on the stage, starts strumming the opening for "No Bad News", while her band hastily rushes onto the stage to become a lively rhythm section grouped to one side of her as she sings and plays along. Another is the interplay between the electric guitar of the talented Doug Lancio and Ms. Griffin's vocals during the gospel sounds of "Love Throw a Line". And then there's an awesome cover of Sam Cook's "Get Yourself Another Fool", something you're not going to get from any of her albums.
The movie is short, perhaps too short, and, expectedly, is heavy on songs from her latest album "Children Running Through", but, unexpectedly and perhaps disappointingly, includes nothing from two of her brilliant albums (they are all brilliant), "Flaming Red" and "1000 Kisses". Fortunately, it does include two songs from her debut album, "Living with Ghosts", one of which opens the movie and provides a nice touch in the background at the beginning of the movie and for the credits at the end of the movie. There a few editing mishaps, although you have to be paying more attention than is necessary to see them. Also, the editing is on the aggressive side with a lot of camera switching, something I like, but which others might find annoying. The sound, lighting, and general atmosphere, however, are consistently superior.
If there are any shortcomings in the movie, they are more than overcome at the end with Ms. Griffin's performance of "Top of the World". That was enough for me to move from 4-stars (which I might otherwise have given it due to the editing on other songs) to 5-stars. For this song, the camera work (particularly at the very beginning of the song), the editing, and, certainly, the performance are "top of the world". If you've seen Ms. Griffin in concert or if you've been a long time fan of hers, I suppose you may find this DVD to be a bit disappointing, simply because it is too short. For everyone else, and I do mean everyone, I think it is well worth seeing. When you see it, you'll almost certainly understand not only why she has such highly-devoted fans, but also why those fans refer to her simply as "Patty".Patty Griffin: Live From the Artists Den (2007) Overview

Lilo & Stitch ReviewI love this sountrack! I guess it helps that Lilo and Stitch is my favorite movie, but this soundtrack is definitely a winner.
This thing is packed with Elvis hits from start to finish, and all of us old folk will be moving our hips again to these old tunes that were still pretty popular when we were young. It's nice to see the King resurrected once again for an amazing movie.
Then there's two Hawaiian songs which are simply beautiful, very happy and very traditional in feel. The sountrack opens with Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride which is very fun, used at the beginning of the film, and later we hear He Mele No Lilo which is the one they played while surfing later in the show. There's a version of Can't Help Falling In Love by A-Teens, which is pretty good, and Burning Love by Wynona, which is spectacular! And if you saw the movie you'll notice that this song has Stitch on guitar at the ending, it's worth a smile to think about that scene while listening to this song.
I've said it in another review of the movie, that Stitch is my fav Disney character, and the fact that in the movie Stitch played some of these songs (with the help of Lilo), makes the whole thing more enjoyable.
The last three tracks are score from the movie. Not as exciting as what came before it, but I guess it's necessary to include them. It is fun though to listen and try and pick out the parts from the movie that they came from, Stitch to the rescue is of course from the part where Lilo is kidnapped by Gantu, forcing Stitch and Jumba to fly after him in their own spaceship, as stitch tries to rescue Lilo.
Very good fun. There's only one problem...this sountrack doesn't include Nani singing "Aloha 'Oe"! How sad! I was really looking forward to hearing that song again, as that part of the movie had me in tears, yes, tears. And lot's of them. Why they didn't inlcude it here is beyond me. So I take 1/2 a point off for that and give this sountrack 4 1/2 stars. Still very good though, be sure to buy it.Lilo & Stitch Overview

Tenacious D - The Complete Master Works (2003) ReviewEVERYONE has to buy this. This is one of the best band DVD sets out there. Of course it's a 2 DVD set but get it while you can because after a while there going to take away the second disc.
Of course Tenacious D is one of the best acoustic/rock groups around today. You got Jack Black with lead vocals and guitar, and Kyle Gass with lead acoustic guitar and vocals. I like how Jack Black always jokes around on stage and Kyle takes everything serious. This set is very good in all kinds of funny and gross ways. You're getting over 3 and a half hours of footage.
DISC 1
6 HBO EPISODES- These are extremely funny and the live parts of these episodes are awesome. They were taped from 1996-1999. You get to hear some songs from the cd (no drums or electric guitar on live parts) as well as some other songs that were great but never got put on their cd. All the live parts in these episodes are done in a small bar type place on Open Mic Night and no one in the audience really likes them. Below are the list of episodes and the length of each one. I listed the songs played in each episode as well.

In this episode J.B. and K.G. have five days to write a new song, but get mad at each other and end up breaking up for a while.

In this episode J.B. gets mad at K.G. for liking the same girl that he likes after J.B. gives K.G. a Friends for Ever medallion which ends up saving his life.

In this episode J.B. and K.G. go through the five steps to admitting that they shouldn't have a dream of becoming a great band after they listen to Captain Ed talk about how he got no where being in a band. They end up finding Sasquatch and he tries to play the drums in their band.
-The Greatest Song in the World- (9:32)-SONGS- Greatest Song in the World (Tribute)
In this episode J.B. and K.G. get a new neighbor (a writer) in there apartment and they make him mad by making to much noise and he ends up calling the police and then J.B. tells the police officer the story of them in the desert and finding a demon which they play the greatest song in the world for.
-The Fan- (12:23)-SONGS- Explosivo,,,, Lee,,,, Special Things
This episode has a hilarious beginning in which J.B. gets mad at the audience for not giving back his clear special pick. They then meet Lee who is a fan of them and gives back K.G.'s pick. They begin to always be with Lee and end up making a song about him. The song Special Things is not very good in which they have Lee sing it.
-Road Gig- (14:05) -SONGS- Warning,,,, The Road,,,, Jesus Ranch
In this episode J.B. and K.G. go on a road gig, and while there driving there car brakes down. They end up finding a Jesus Ranch in which everyone is all religious and K.G. falls in love with a big potato that the people grow there.
That's all the HBO episodes on the first disc but that's not even half of all the stuff on the 2 discs. Next I'll list all 16 songs played in the live concert, which is an hour long and is performed at the Brixton Academy. The concert is one of the best live concerts I'v seen on DVD and features some cool solos and all of Tenacious D's songs from there cd except for City Hall and Lee. The length of each song is listed too.

Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) ReviewI saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra two years back when they did a Christmas show here in Wisconsin, and I'm seeing them this holiday season as well, so I figured this would be a great disc to buy. And was I ever right! This disc does a much better job of capturing the fun atmosphere and high energy music of the band than their previous DVD release did. The band sounds just as good as they do on both of their Christmas CD's, and watching the band mambers get into the music while playing it, makes it even more fun for the viewer. The highlight of the disc (and of their live show in general) is when they play the "Nutcracker Suite" for an encore. While often considered a "novelty" swing band, the Nutcracker really shows that all members of the band are world-class musicians first and foremost. It was good to see a few non-Christmas Setzer classics in the playlist, but "Rumble in Brighton" and "Fishnet Stockings" seem odd choices for a Christmas show. Dire Straits: On the Night ReviewI really liked this DVD. It took a long time to get it upon its release (almost two months), but it is more than worth the wait.
The production value is very high. There is a nice opening sequence where the band and roadies arrive at the venue, and get ready to put on the show. The DVD uses this sequence to introduce the players, showing them getting off of busses, walking down corridors, and other mundane predatory actions. Knopfler walks out to a very enthusiastic crowd and after a few seconds of thunderous applause launches into the first song. I was very happy (as a guitar player myself) that many of his solos were shown in close-up detail. I like little things like that, seeing how he works to get that sound. I will not go over every song, but just be sure, there is not a single piece of filler here, although there would be a couple of songs that might be considered MIA. I could not imagine seeing B.B. King in concert without his performing "The Thrill is Gone", so seeing Dire Straits and not having them perform the break through "Sultans of Swing", the song that introduced them to the world is a bit strange. Oh well, you can't have everything. There is a good mix of rockers, softer more mellow songs and plenty of opportunity for Knopfler to let the other members of the band show off a bit. Overall, a great performance.
The one weakness that requires me to go with 4 stars rather than 5 is the fact that this is a medium that can offer so much more in terms of sound. That this is not offered in some form of 5.1 is a crime. I love concerts on DVD when you hear the crowds behind you and the music hits from many angles. If I gave this basic two-channel stereo rendering a 5 star rating, it would not be fair to the other DVDs out there that earned their 5s with terrific audio engineering. If this was a 1980s VHS tape, it would be a 5, but for a DVD introduced in the year 2005, two-channel stereo can't be given a perfect score for a concert performance.

One Man Band ReviewJames Taylor is that rarest of creatures -- an unpretentious superstar. The 59-year-old iconic singer and songwriter, originally from North Carolina, presented his so-called "One Man Band" show at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA during July 2007 with such effortless charm that it was as if he were sitting around the fireside at home, talking with a bunch of old friends. But the ease with which he put it all across belied the rigorous attention to detail and sheer craft that went into the making of this delightful show.
Larry Goldings, who accompanies Taylor on piano, organ, synth, harmonium and melodica, is a one-man band. He has developed a following in the jazz world for his own compositions and recordings, as well as his live performance.
James Taylor sang some of his most beloved recordings, interspersing them with his insightful and humorous anecdotes on the inspiration for the songs.
He and Larry together serve up a full menu of Taylor's work over the past 40 years, from "Something in the Way She Moves" (the song which won him his first contract with the Beatles' Apple Records in 1968) right up to "Mean Old Man" and "My Travelling Star" from his most-recent release October Road.
An illustrated voyage around Taylor's life and times, the show begins with him alone, singing the gentle melody and picking out the lilting chord sequence of "Something in the Way She Moves", one of the first songs that he wrote.
Joined on stage (and on the record) by the piano player Larry Goldings, he moves on to another of his early songs, "Never Die Young".
.."That's always good advice", he told the audience. "But far too late for me, of course"...
On this 19-song set -- which marks a return to an earlier, simpler style of performance for the perennial, quintessential singer-songwriter -- Taylor sings with a touch that is nothing short of perfection.
You will enjoy some of his biggest hits "Sweet Baby James", "Carolina in my Mind" and "Fire and Rain" and the gentle, life-affirming mood of the album will continue to resonate long after your listening.
This isn't an album for fans of shoot-outs and car chases, as you might expect from a man who sings: "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time".

Rush - R30 - 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2005) ReviewOf all the major bands of my teens, only Rush and U2 have never done a "comeback" or a "reunion." This, of course, is because they've never been gone.
There is something almost eerie about that. Twenty years ago, my friends and I were playing furious air guitar with pool sticks in my parents' basement, while a vinyl copy of "2112" did its best to exceed the limits of a hand-me-down stereo.
Today, I'm a husband and father, working very hard to keep the gut away. Yet somehow, Alex, Geddy and Neil are still here, just like they always were - and like me they've gotten older and (except for Geddy) a bit wider around the middle. Which makes it even cooler that they still ABSOLUTELY ROCK!
During the Overture on this R30 DVD, they seamlessly present themes from 2112, Fly By Night, Rush, Hemispheres and more. If you close your eyes, and just listen, you expect to open them and see young, skinny, long-haired Rush straining vintage 1970's equipment in some kind of Rock and Roll time warp. You expect to suddenly hear Geddy go high and start singing those searing notes that he used to hit.
When you open your eyes, you see older, wider, short-haired (except for Geddy) Rush straining modern equipment, changed physically by time but obviously still the exact same band that inspired me, for example, to take my speakers off my wall in college and lay down between them so that I could catch every last nuance of the entire "Farewell to Kings" album on one of the first CD's I ever bought.
As the years went by, I moved on to other bands, and my complete Rush CD collection began to scatter into the piles with the hundreds of others. I thought that I had moved on.
In watching this concert with the headphones cranked up, I got that same sense of awe and excitement I had in college. I found myself sitting upright, not just listening but mentally cheering for my onetime heroes, who were suddenly heroes all over again.
I haven't seen the "Rio" DVD, but in R30 Rush will remind every true fan of why we're all so happy that they have never gone away. This series is about retracing history, and documenting the process of creating the classic albums of the past 30 years before the creators pass from the earth and their words are lost forever. Short on "features" that we've been spoiled with on other DVDs , on the surface this is a straight forward 60 min. doc on the making of the "Catch A Fire" album by The Wailers. The strength of this production, and in fact the whole series, is that the producers went to Jamaica and London to interview the people who wrote, recorded, engineered, produced and played on this seminal album. Recent interviews with Bunny Wailer, Rita Marley, Chris Blackwell, and surviving members of the Wailers live and studio bands are very insightful. Add to that the fact that the DVD features archival interviews with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. These further deepen the viewer's understanding of their musical and social philosophies and how it was expressed in their music. Through all of these people you get a very complete picture of the commercial, religious, social, and economic pressures on the band to bring the message of Reggae Music from the Third world to the First. Finally, the highlight of the disc has to be the rare and some never-seen-before footage of the original Wailers live in England in the early '70's. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Live at the El Mocambo 1983 (1983) ReviewThere is nothing like seeing great blues in a small club. Stevie has done a lot of great live work (except while in the depths of his drug abuse), but this video is the pinnacle of what he was capable of. This small club in Toronto, with rowdy fans has more energy and fire than any arena, stadium or theatre could match.
This was also a musical high point of Stevie's career. He was older than the "In the Beginning" disc (also taken from a small club), and his playing reflects it. He was more fluid and confident, and you can see that he was REALLY feeling "it" the night of the El Mocambo show. I have never heard or seen a better rendition of Texas Flood. I have never even seen a beter blues guitar performance by anyone on any song compared to it. The versions of Tell Me, Wham!, So Excited, Testify, Voodoo Chile, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and Lenny also are the best I have heard from any recording (official or bootleg) of Stevie's.
As for the DVD, it could use some work. I noticed, in comparison with the VHS version, the mixers have brought the volume down a bit on Stevie's guitar, while making the low end sounds more prominent. This takes away from the power of Stevie's performance a bit. They also still have not included the version of Little Wing that was performed right before Third Stone From the Sun! Please! Include it, I will buy the DVD again! On a bright note for the DVD, the interview included is quite interesting, with Tommy and Chris' thoughts and relflections on Stevie and the night of the El Mocambo show.
All in all, I would still get the DVD over the VHS copy. But regardless, every fan of the blues, Stevie, and/or guitar should buy this video. Ever hear Eric Clapton describe Stevie as an open channel, in which musical ideas just flowed through him? AC/DC - Live at Donington (1992) ReviewAbsolutely Best at the Highest possible Volume on a Surround sound system.
AC/DC Deliver for the fans, and they deliver consistently.
I doubt very much that the DVD is Overdubbed, since the Sound is the Same as Every other AC/DC Release. But even if it is overdubbed, WHAT THE HELL...
This is a Great Show, and the Goods are delivered.
Angus Plays brilliantly, and works the crowd superbly. As for the alleged disparity between what you see and what you hear... Angus is 5"2, so his playing of the Gibson SG he uses is deceptive, it looks one way when physically he is producing the sound by what his body does and his left hand technique. Hard to explain, but what you see is not always what you hear.
The other thing that I thought any Movie viewer would know, is that In Making a Concert Film, a Second , third, or whatever, camera is used for "Inserts", and this is matched as best as can be done... which does not always work; this does not mean that the Track is overdubbed, merely that the Line editor, and the Final Edit did not match.
Anyway, this is Superb.
Get NO BULL: LIVE IN MADRID, and The DVD of AC/DC Live in Munich... Extremely Brilliant !!!!!!!!

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in New York City (2001) ReviewQ: What transforms a guy who formerly shrugged off Springteen into a die hard fanatic in one lighting-bolt of an electric moment?
A: THIS!
All of a sudden, I "get it."
Let me set the scene: I came home, dogged and tired, from work. I turned on the TV which, thanks to my roommate at the time, was tuned to MTV (I mention my roommate was watching because I despise MTV, both for what it has become and its contribution to; scratch that; its LEADERSHIP of, all that has become wrong with pop music today). And to add insult ot injury, who's video was on? Creed. Without getting off on a rant of what is probably a hundred reasons why, I'll simply say I hate f**king Creed! For the purpose of the story I do have to mention perhaps the biggest reason why: they are laughably fake in their stupid posturing and are poor performers at that. Their standard riffs and the laughable b.s. that is their overly-rightous lyrics simply enhance this disgusting sherade. So I let out a sigh of contempt, because I can't do a thing about their stupifying success, and move forward to HBO to see if I can catch a movie; and what's on? Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band Live in New York. Towards the end of a song (later I would come to know and love it as "Out In the Street") Bruce was prancing around the stage as the crowd chanted a chorus of, "Oh-oh-oh-oh!" I watched for a minute, smiled at the fun he and his band, whoever these guys are, were having, and decided to move on. Then a funny thing happened. All of a sudden there was a close-up of Bruce's sweaty face. His face red, he stood at the mic and shouted, "New York City!" The crowd screamed. He yelled it again. They screamed louder, drums thudering in the background. One more time: "New York City!!!" The crowd reached near meltdown. "Lets Go! One! Two!" A crisp piano plays the opening notes to "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," as the audience "sings" along to the melody. Bruce walks the stage, throwing his arms in the air, pointing at every section of the audience, an I-Mean-Business look on his face. I gotta see what happens. After a long work-up, he jumps off the piano he has now taken to, runs back to his mic, and again: "One, two, three, four!!!" The band busts full-force into the song and I am feeling something very exciting. As I watch Bruce rip through this song with more vigor, passion and flat-out rock chops than maybe anyone I've ever seen, I think to myself, now this is how it should be! This is ow its done! THIS is why I hate Creed and all their ilk! I flip back to MTV for a split second. Creed is still on (it must have been more than just one video - treat!). I flip back to Bruce. And back to Creed again. The difference is staggering. I'm flipping thinking, "rock star, douche bag. Rock star, douche bag." Back to Springsteen one last time and I say there. How could it get better. He hadn't introduced the band yet. After the band intro I was giddy with excitment from all the energy the was radiating out of Bruce, his band, the obvious love and comrodere between them; and the audience for that matter, and myself. The song is coming to a close, still at full force and Bruce, obviously tired, but somehow more vitalized than when he started, throws up his hand and yells, "Save me somebody!"
Amazing!
As it turns out, Bruce saved me. I finally understood why he is so popular. I never got the whole "Church of Springsteen" thing and never thought his biggest songs I heard growing up were anything so special. I liked them fine, but I like a lot of songs and artists. I only regard a handfull as beign something more; something special. Turns out I never gave Bruce enough of a chance.
My loss.
Since 2000 when this all went down I have become a die hard Boss fan. I have all the albums, I've been fortunate enough to see him a few times (thanks to "The Rising" and its tour coming right on the heels of my new found love and respect for the Boss as a performer and his lyrics), I've found quite a few songs that have inspired me in one way or another, I've gotten others into him and, God help me, I even karaoke his stuff. I consider myself on board with those who have been with him as far back as they can remember, because I feel like I have been too.
"Tenth Avenue," which is roughly 3 songs from the end of the HBO version, was what drew me in. The concert would soon be over and, obviously, I had fallen hard. Both for Springsteen and this live performance. I was kicking myself for not coming to this realization sooner, but I could not wait to right this terrible wrong. I rushed out and picked up the DVD and watched it over and over. At the same time I bought the cd version and listened to it over and over. This, other than previously purchasing "Greatest His" in '95 when I was 16 (even as a non-die hard Bruce fan I knew then that it was severly lacking in many a great songs; I just didn't realize how many), was my main introduction to the Boss. Years later, I wouldn't have the introduction any other way. Knowing what I now know about Bruce, his songs in various versions, and his live performances, the stuff captured here ranks among his best. At least in terms putting someone-new-to-Bruce's jaw on the floor.
So after going back and listening to all Bruce's stuff, falling in love with much of it, and driving everyone crazy who doesn't share my fascination with him (although most who watch this and have heard some of the stuff I told them they just had to hear, do see what I'm talking about; even if it doesn't convert them the way it did me, they can see there is so much more to Bruce than they ever thought and now understand why he is a legen to so many), I can honestly say that "Live in NYC" improves on many of Bruce's best works. And that's not an easy thing.
I've read some people complain about a relative lack of hits and standards here, but what is here is as good as anything he has ever done. To see the setlist does not do the quality justice since Bruce improves on so much and does so much differently. Emotionally, every song benefits from his live energy. Besides "Tenth Ave..." standouts include "Atlantic City," which completely reinvents the song. Bruce's vocals are so tight, so emotive, they send chills. Ditto "Youngstown" and "Lost In the Flood." All three of these songs best their album versions here. Only the DVD contains performances of "Backstreets" and "Darknes On the Edge Of Town," and its a damn shame there wasn't room for them on the CD because they too fall into the better-live category. Again, its the emotion in both the vocal quality as well as the all around playing; from Bruce's guitar work to the band's playing as a whole. I've been trying to get these audio versions ("Darkness" apears on the "Waiting on a Sunny Day" single along with "Thunder Road" and "Born to Run" from these NYC shows; but "Backstreets" remains MIA). "Light of Day" works in the same vein as "Tenth Avenue...," with Bruce takin' us to church and baptising us with his gospel of rock n' roll. It is an energetic, frenzied moment that will get you on your feet as if a you were just hit with 1,000 volts of electricity. Most concerts should be so lucky as to have one moment such as this. This show has (at least) two.
And I can't begin to explain his guitar chops on "Prove It All Night" and "Murder Inc." He is phenomenal to watch work that axe. Both the DVD and CD give all the guitar solos a big, blistering, stand out sound. You've never heard Bruce like this in the studio (this guitar-hero-greatness extends on an equal, and maybe larger, scale on the Barcelona DVD, if only because there are more chances for him bust it out on that set).
For that legendary E-Street comrodere, you can't beat "Tenth Ave..." here, but "Two Hearts," the super-chardged, cut-lose fun of "Ramrod," the block party that is "Out in the Street," and the emotional bond of "If I Should Fall Behind," are all a thing of beauty to behold - especially during this reunion phase. This crew needs eachother. Just look at Bruce's "Plugged" from his E-Street departure days - they are not the same apart. Yes, Bruce is a solo artist and the songs are his, but he is never better than when he is with his brothers (and first lady) at his side. Together they make his songs theirs - and ours. This is a band - not Bruce and some backing band. They are not replaceable. Even "E-Steet Shuffle," which plays over the end credits, sounds so good and so fun, I wish we could see the performance and I wish it were included on the CD.
So maybe there was a reason I had to stomach Creed after all. Oh yeah, and as far as this item, if I didn't mention it; get it! Both the DVD and CD.

John Mayer - Any Given Thursday (2003) ReviewIf you love the eccentric, amazing, & personal things that are John Mayer, you have to buy this! I have watched and rewatched this DVD, and rewatched it many more times with the commentary by John and Scotty Crowe. The set (as only 'Room For Squares' and 'Inside Wants Out' had been released at the time) is very good and you should definitely see it if you like John Mayer. If, as a previous review suggested, you do not enjoy watching John live, then buy the live CD. I personally believe the music is quality, which is hard to find these days. John Mayer is totally live with no annoying lip-syncing, lengthy costume changes, overdone pyro, etc. It's refreshing to see an artist like this on stage. His unique "guitar faces" (as JM himself says on this DVD) and "dances" could be unpleasant to some I suppose. But appreciate the fact that it is a live show! No editing of the vocals has been done, etc. His guitar skills are amazing! I strongly suggest going to see John Mayer on tour, because you get to see even more impressive things than this. The DVD does do a good job of showing what he is like. He talks/rambles in the show which is extremely funny with his wit. He also (I believe) sings beautifully. He covers The Police's 'Message In A Bottle' and then Stevie Ray Vaughan's 'Lenny' before going into his older and unreleased song 'Man on the Side'. Make sure you listen to the commentary! Stephen Lynch - Live at The El Rey (2004) ReviewIf you grew up with any sense of Christian or Catholic dogma you will surely need to repent after watching this one .. or risk going straight to hell in a handbasket! The fundamentalists surely think Lynch is the Anti-Christ.
Armed only with his acoustic guitar and boyish charm, Lynch articulates some of the silliest, crudest and creative stories you will ever hear recorded. The DVD "extra's" are also well worth the price of admission!
This is a great DVD for anyone not familiar with Stephen Lynch. Although those already familiar with him will find some of the material redundant, this DVD will still make you laugh as it captures all Lynch's characteristic facial grimacing and hysterical mannerisms which are missed on his audio CDs. Those who've seen him live will know what I'm talking about.

The Tony Rice Guitar Method ReviewThis is an excellent DVD, but there are a few minor negatives. Compared to his earlier VHS "lesson," (An Intimate Lesson w/TR) this one was more difficult for me to follow because Tony isn't talking to you, the viewer. He's talking to Happy Traum. This makes it a little more difficult to match with the tablature because Tony will do a variation after Happy asks a question. The older VHS is straight forward - we're going to learn this one now. This new DVD really is like sitting in on two musicians playing around but not noticing you're there. The pieces are more difficult than the older video as well - I find myself very intimidated by how fast and clean he plays these more complex tunes - but that may be because I haven't learned them yet!!! Other than those nitpicks, it's always great to get a closeup view of just what in the world Tony's doing, hear stories, listen to that amazing old Martin and his very impressive newer Santa Cruz. And the ability to slow forward and easily rewind the DVD is magnificent. The selection of tunes is very good, the audio quality is excellent and the camera work is very good. Now if I could just get Tony to come to my house and teach me this stuff . . .The Tony Rice Guitar Method OverviewYou'll gain insights into important elements, such as Tony's method for getting his guitar in tune, how he warms up for a show, the correct way to put on a capo, proper left hand fretting technique, advice about speed and dexterity, the secrets of Tony's guitar micing and how he plays some of his signature licks. Tony plays and breaks down some relatively easy songs, including "The Last Thing on My Mind," "Bury Me Beneath the Willow" and "Wildwood Flower," showing how these country-folk standards can evolve from basic Carter Family style to an arrangement utilizing Tony's unique embellishments. You'll see, up close, the details of his right hand technique – his fluidity of motion and how he holds the pick, adjusting its angle to give him his trademark cross-picking sound. Clarence White was Tony's first major influence, and he relates how his own sound was derived from the rhythm patterns and licks of his early idol. He slows down astonishing solos they each played on "Nine Pound Hammer,"and describes the scales he uses for his improvisations both in basic G position and up the neck. Tony also discusses Doc Watson's powerful role in his musical development, launching into an exploration of fiddle tunes "Stony Lonesome" and "Billy in the Lowground." Tony Rice's uniquely beautiful ballad arrangements of "Shenandoah" and "Danny Boy" (both in dropped D tuning) combine chord-melody style, improvised scales, the use of harmonics and other lyrical techniques that will give you endless pleasure in guitar exploration. Wyatt Rice then joins his brother in a demonstration of how to play minor key tunes "Little Sadie" and "Jerusalem Ridge." Finally, Tony uses "Salt Creek" to demonstrate his highly regarded back up technique, with Wyatt playing lead. The brothers then go out with a version of the classic "I Am a Pilgrim" to finish the set.
