American Stars N Bars ReviewFor the longest time, I did not add Neil Young's "American Stars 'N Bars" to my CD collection, because I had read and heard so much intense critcism of this album. But, I found a copy at my local 'used CD' store around the corner and decided to take a chance on this so called "oddities" album. Instantly, I fell in love with this crazy-quilt of both acoustic and electric music. I seem to love this CD for the very reasons that others disparage it. Yes, I know it's disparate, hodge-podge of songs. But, it's also raw and alive and seems to have a goofy, not-to-serious charm of it's own. On this album, Neil is no longer in the "middle of the road" ("Harvest"), but he isn't in the now infamously quoted "ditch" either ("Tonight's the Night", "On the Beach"). Young is sort of doing a balancing act in the middle, creating an album thats' sort of a warped, Frankenstein-like version of his classic, "Harvest". But it's a Frankenstein, that can tap it's toes and sort of dance. I love songs like the rustic "The Old Country Waltz" or the pulp Western tale, "Saddle Up the Palimono". I in particular, like the contributions of singers Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris & Nicolette larson. They really work well with Young giving, that perfect '70s era country-rock feeling (especially Harris, who shines on "Star of Bethlehem"). According to one tale I've heard, the ladies thought they were just doing some 'practice, run throughs' of the songs. Much to their chagrin, they later learned that Neil was using these sessions as the final takes, hence the raw feeling of the songs. The electric portions of the CD are wonderful as well. "Like a Hurricane" is of course a classic and Young has played this long & Winding song for many years in his concert repertoire. I love the song's lyrical imagery and to be blunt, the guitar soloing just kicks some rock n' roll (...)! One of my favorites on this CD is the final track, "Homegrown", a funny little ode to small farms or the joys of harvesting 'weed' (you can take your choice). It's a bouncy tune that totally gives me a case of the giggles. No, "American Stars 'N Bars" is never going to be in the cannon of the "Great, Neil Young Albums". All I can say is I don't think it deserves it's bad rep. I liked it and highly recommend it!American Stars N Bars Overview

Tim McGraw and The Dancehall Doctors ReviewTim's show in Feb '98 was my first country concert of my life, and ever since then, I have been a big fan of his. His newest cd is great! "She's My Kinda Rain" is a great love song, and "Red Ragtop" tells a great story that many people can actually relate to. Not to mention Tim's cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" is amazingly done! Only thing that can top it is the American Music Awards performance of the song as a duet with Tim and Elton. Another great song on the cd is "Real Good Man". "...when it comes to loving you, I've got velvet hands; I'll show you how a real bad boy can be a real good man..." That line just makes me melt. It sounds like he is singing his heart right to Faith. What a lucky woman she is! Ok, well, most of the cd has that same romantic idea. What a talented singer Tim is.Tim McGraw and The Dancehall Doctors OverviewFull Title - Tim McGraw & The Dancehall Doctors. Neck & Neck ReviewThis album from these two masters of guitar fingerpicking will leave anyone who loves the guitar, country, blues, or melodic rock delighted. I have been a Mark Knopfler fan since early Dire Straits, and learned about Chet Atkins from Mark. Anybody Mark thinks is great is definitely worth a listen. I became a Chet Atkins fan a bit late in life, and this album was a big part of that.
This CD shines precisely because it is not flashy or showy; rather it is imbued with craftsmanship and quality musicianship in every bar. The whole album is strong, but I am especially fond of "There'll Be Some Changes Made" in which Chet and Mark trade good humored jabs about their musical heritage, "I'll See You in My Dreams", a mastercrafted classic, and the laid back "Tahitian Skies." Throughout the CD the vocals are relaxed and effortless, and although Knopfler has an appealing if somewhat gravelly voice, Atkins is a little more atonal and wavering in his singing style. Of course the focus here is not vocal performances, but guitar virtuosity, and that is abundant.
This is a CD that will be appreciated by all guitarists who grasp how truly difficult it is to produce a recording this melodious and synchronized, regardless of how easy these two masters make it look. "Neck & Neck" is highly recommended.
Neck & Neck OverviewVinyl Classics reissue of this 1990 album by the guitar legend and the Dire Straits leader comes as a vinyl look-a-like CD that's packaged in a die-cut see-through slipcase. Sony.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Breathe ReviewWhat is wrong with you people? Are we that insecure that we have to categorize EVERYTHING! "Breathe" is not typical country, all I think agree, but it is awesome music filled with so much. Faith has said many times before that she has been inspired by all types of music and that all of these together have shaped her. She said that she would never go out and make a pop album but also could never make a traditional country album. Faith sings what she feels at the time she is working on the album. We cannot judge someone on how they FEEL! She is at an extremely exciting, fun, and happy time in her career and personal life. The songs show that well. Stardom could never ruin such a soulful and grounded person like Faith. She wants to sing what she wants to sing and we can't stop her or anyone else from doing it. So, why can't we just place music only under one category, MUSIC, and just enjoy it! "Breathe" is a must buy for people who want good, soulful, fun, music!Breathe OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: HILL,FAITHTitle: BREATHEStreet Release Date: 11/09/1999

Very Best of Dwight Yoakam ReviewDwight Yoakam is the reason I'm not embarrased to say I like country music. When he broke onto the national scene with his debut album GUITARS, CADILLACS, ETC., ETC., he gave the country music establishment a much needed kick in the butt. This twenty track collection hits most of the highlights of Yoakam's nearly two decades as a performer. Starting with the Johnny Horton cover of "Honky Tonk Man" from his debut through two tracks from his 2003 release POPULATION: ME, Yoakam has had a major impact on country music. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Rhino's 2002 box set REPRISE PLEASE BABY, this is a winner from beginning to end. The only disappointment is that with a running time of just under 70 minutes, they could have added the only two top 10 singles missing from this set: "Always Late With Your Kisses (from 1987's HILLBILLY DELUXE) and "I Got You" (from 1988's BUENAS NOCHES FROM A LONELY ROOM). VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDVery Best of Dwight Yoakam Overview"Your stuff is so hard, they're gonna think it's rock 'n' roll," a friend once told Dwight Yoakam. Twisting strains of Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, and Gram Parsons into a stripped-down sound wholly his own, Yoakam is one of music's true mavericks, and his body of work is one of the most innovative in all of country. Rooted in the purest country traditions, and wrapped in raw rock 'n' roll attitude, Yoakam's art rivets fans of both genres and remains as utterly original today as when it started burning up the charts in the '80s.

Neil Young - Heart of Gold (2006) ReviewIn the summer of '05, Neil Young, having just survived a close call with a brain aneurysm, performed two concerts at Nashville's famed Ryman Auditorium. Documented here, the concerts premiered Young's most recent, and critically acclaimed release, Prairie Wind, followed by many classics from the gentler compartment of his massive, magnificent catalog. From the opening interview snippets to the final scene of Neil Young alone on stage, Jonathan Demme, as one would expect, has created a masterpiece, a film suitable to its subject. No two-second ADD camera work here, this wonderful film was shot with the same grace, intelligence and intimacy as the music Young and his friends--including Emmylou Harris!--perform. I saw this film four times while it was in town, and now I can't wait for the DVD release. Don't miss this (literally) glowing tribute to one of rock/blues/folk/country's genuine icons.Neil Young - Heart of Gold (2006) OverviewAcademy-award winning director Jonathan Demme beautifully captures Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend, Neil Young as he prepares and presents the performance of a lifetime with the help of his wife Peggi and friends country star Emmylou Harris, steel guitarist Ben Keith and more at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.

Wrecking Ball ReviewThe main thing that has always been interesting about Emmylou Harris is her choice of material. She has written and co-written some good songs ("Boulder To Birmingham", for example), but succeeds primarily as an interpreter. This album can be singled out not only for its interpretive qualities, but for the incredible atmosphere created by producer Daniel Lanois. The recording has a similar dark, introspective ambience familiar from Lanois' work with Bob Dylan, and it works wonderfully with these songs.
There are no weak track on the disc. High quality songs by Neil Young and Bob Dylan ("Every Grain of Sand") are here along with lesser known gems by Lucinda Williams ("Sweet Old World") and Steve Earle ("Goodbye"). However, for this listener, the songs penned by Lanois himself are the real high points. All three are unforgettable. "Deeper Well", a collaboration with Harris, will haunt the listener long after a single hearing. These songs are nothing short of brilliant and deserve to be known by all interested in any kind of contemporary music.
Many of the songwriters featured on this recording participate in the performances as well (Dylan, is of course absent, but it is hard to imagine his song being any better than it is here).
An indispensible CD.Wrecking Ball OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: HARRIS,EMMYLOUTitle: WRECKING BALLStreet Release Date: 09/26/1995

25 Number Ones ReviewI ordered this album without much thought- just assumed a CD filled with #1's should be good... and I was trying to get deeper into classic country music and made the assumption that Conway Twitty would be a good place to start.
It has been three weeks, and this CD has not left my car stereo (unless I need to transport it quickly to another stereo). I'm a 21-year-old woman, and am currently OBSESSED with Conway Twitty, a singer who had barely registered on my music radar a mere month ago.
This is an incredible album, spanning many different time periods of Conway's career, and even includes a couple songs with Loretta that are stunningly beautiful. "As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone" is even included- a song which predominately features the lovely Loretta.
My favorites are #8 (You've Never Been This Far Before) and #25 (Desperado Love). I love all of the songs, to be truthful-- I CAN NOT STOP singing these songs... they bring me such JOY and PEACE.
I completely recommend this album, to all. I've always been a country fan, but owning this album has thrown me into the thralls of beautiful classic country music- where the heart and the soul was inherent within each syllable of each song.25 Number Ones Overview

Essential Willie Nelson Reviewthis is the one to have. Let's face it, all compilations have their weaknesses, but the 2 disc "The Essential Willie Nelson" (2003) is the first to cover all the labels Willie has recorded for and all the big hits in one set! Disc one kicks off with 7 early 60s recordings including "Night life", "Hello Walls", and "Crazy" (which Willie wrote & Patsy Cline made famous). Track 8, "Me and Paul" starts Willie's 70s recordings including "Blue eyes crying in the rain" and of course his classic duets with Waylon: "Good Hearted Woman" & "Mama's don't let your babies...". 3 songs are included from the 1978 album "Stardust": "Blue Skies", "Georgia on my mind", & "All of Me" and disc one closes with two live tracks: "Whiskey River" & "Stay a little longer" both from the '78 album "Willie & Family Live".
Disc 2 continues with late 70s and early 80s hits like "My Heroes have always been Cowboys", "Always on my mind", and of course "On the road again". More classic duets follow with "Pancho & Lefty" (a personal favorite) with Merle Haggard, "To all the girls..." with Julio Iglesias, and "Seven Spanish Angels" with Ray Charles. The 1984 gem "Highwayman" featuring Kristofferson, Waylon, and Cash is also here. The second disc is wrapped up with more duets: "Slow Dancing" with U2 (which surprisingly works because Bono is either MIA or extremely toned down), "Mendocino County Line" with Lee Ann Womack, and "One Time too Many" with Aerosmith. One review stated that these last three songs left a "sour taste" considering that they are part of an "essential" collection. I have to agree, but only greatly in terms of the Aerosmith song. It starts off well enough with acoustic guitar and Willie and Steven Tyler trading verses, but when the rest of Aerosmith kicks in and Tyler does his thing, Willie is drowned out and that's not cool on a Willie Nelson compilation. If one wants to hear Aerosmith, there are many ways to do so. So with the minor exception of the final track of the set, this compilation is indispensable. A great way to get Willie's biggest hits on one reasonably priced set!
*It should be noted that 14 of the 20 tracks from the 1981 compilation "Greatest Hits & some that will be" are included here not to mention 22 of the 30 tracks on 1999's "The Very Best of Willie" as well. So if you have either of these, 2003's "Essential" may not be essential. However, if you don't have any Willie compilations yet, this is the one to go with.
Also recommended:
RCA Legends: Waylon Jennings (2 disc, 40 track excellent compilation)Essential Willie Nelson OverviewThis double-disc set is cross-licensed to include key tracks from 40 years of recording! Includes Night Life; Hello Walls; Me and Paul; Bloody Mary Morning; Funny How Time Slips Away; Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain; On the Road Again; If You've Got the Money I've Got the Time; Georgia on My Mind; My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys; Always on My Mind; Pancho and Lefty; Highwayman , and more. 41 tracks!

These Days Review"Part of me thinks this has a chance to really break down some barriers, a chance to really go places that maybe I've never gotten to before," Gill says of the 43-track set, which includes collaborations with Sheryl Crow, jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall and the Everly Brothers' Phil Everly. "At the same time, my fear is that people will say, 'You know, 11 songs would've been just plenty.: interview with Vince Gill.
But 11 songs wouldn't have been just plenty. "These Days" has the makings of a landmark album. It also traces the musical history of one of country music's most versatile artists. These CD's all started with a call from Eric Clapton. He invited Vince Gill to play at one of his concerts-he said "I want the best guitar players, I know". Vince was deeply touched. He was at a point in his life when he was not sure which direction to turn- this invite gave him a new direction. This began a year of writing, gathering the best musicians, singing and pickin' the songs and putting this 4 CD together. Would 11 songs be best? No, how to choose which songs and how to put them together. The answers came slowly but surely, A 4 CD set was the answer, Never been done before and may never be done again, but it was the chance of a lifetime. 43 all new songs written and sung by Vince Gill and some of his best friends.
In the end the 4 sets of discs came together more easily than anyone thought.
The first disc known as the "Rockin' Record- Workin" On A Big Chill" and loud guitar, This set contains ten songs that all rock- Several duets- Rodney Crowell and "Nothin' For A Broken Heart" my favorite of disc one, but all are fast guitar playin', stompin and had clappin set.
Disc Two: The Reason Why-The Groovy Record
These are thirteen ballads and contain the most duets with women, Lee Ann Rimes Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Alsion Krauss and my favorite song of the entire set with Diana krall "Faint of Heart"- such a lovely, romantic set.
Disc Three: Some Things Never Get Old-The Country & Western Record
Eleven of the best country songs you have heard. Favorite alert again- a duet with Emmylou's Harris called "Some Things Never Get Old" and a secret between us. Vince changed the lyrics of the song to include "Blueberry Wine". This was the first song he heard Emmylou sing when he was a 16 or 17 year old. It changed the course of his life- He decided right then and there that he wanted to sing country like Emmylou.
Disc Four:-Little Brother- The Acoustic Record
Ten self explanatory songs- lots of music and real songs from the heart. One of them with his daughter, Jenny Gill, called "A River Like You".
"In making this set-The sessions quickly took on an air of something special. "The session players, they wouldn't go out and get coffee after a take," notes former NRBQ guitarist Al Anderson, who played on the album and co-wrote 13 of its songs with Gill. "They'd come in (to the studio's control room) and listen really intently to what was going down on Vince's record. Guests play a key role in These Days, not only for their musical contributions but for their relationships to Gill and his career. Rodney Crowell used to play in a band with Gill; Emmylou Harris was one of his early supporters. Guy Clark, who joins Gill for These Days' final track, Almost Home, headlined the first gig Gill played when he moved to Los Angeles in the mid-'70s. Some of the folks I've known for 30 years," Gill says. "We've gone through this big circle, and we're looking at it 30 years later. And a handful of people are new relationships. Diana Krall, LeAnn Rimes, Sheryl Crow -- quite a few folks that I had never recorded with, so they're new friends." USA Today
"Listening to Gill talk about "These Days" and his respect for the Opry might make one consider if the concept of "These Days" borrows a bit from a successful page in the proverbial Grand Ole Opry handbook. The page which might read something like, "Occasionally showcase musical styles that don't walk an absolutely straight and narrow country/bluegrass line, but be sure to remain true to your musical heritage." Gill says, "I love that this record is going to cover so many musical bases and is diverse as it is. Yet it is equally eloquently pointed to the country and bluegrass music I revere." Grand Ole Opry
This 4 set CD is unlike anything else I have heard and it is marvelous. An eclectic mix of every kind of music- something for everyone and everyone will love this. 43 songs and each one so special in its own way. There are bound to be favorites and I have picked mine. Vince Gill has opened the door for his friends and fans. We have something special here. This is a set of 4 CD's so highly recommended. prisrob 10-19-06
These Days OverviewIn an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock. To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Next Big Thing ReviewVince has offered up a 17 song set (practically two CDs worth of music for the price of one) without a single weak song on the
CD. As always, he is a triple threat as a great singer, songwriter and musician. Vince shows us again all that is good about contemporary country music today (This CD is on par with his classic "The Key" from 1998).
Songs range from hard core country ("Two Hearts", "Without You", "Old Time Fiddle") to strong ballads ("Someday" & "In These Last Few Days), to mid tempo country/pop ("She Never Makes Me Cry" & "We Had It ALL") to rockin country ("Next Big Thing").
Especially moving is his nod to getting older and being comfortable with it in "Young Man's Town" (destined to be a classic song!), the Merle haggard tribute in "Real Mean Bottle" and the sentimental life's journey song "This Old Guitar and Me".
The songwriting is exceptionally strong and Vince proves he can produce his own music without Tony Brown.
I have no doubt this will be the next big hit for Vince Gill!
I highly recommend this CD.Next Big Thing Overview

Stars & Guitars ReviewSure, I've been a Willie fan for over 20 years, but I don't own every CD he's made...in fact this was the first I've bought in several years. I CAN'T QUIT PLAYING IT! I'm absolutely addicted! Willie's unique voice and guitar music somehow blends so great with other musician's very different styles. Most of the stars Willie sings with on this CD, I either didn't know or didn't like, so it's safe to say I didn't buy it for the star lineup. But the music is SUPERB and the other artists do Willie's song justice! "Maria" is definitely not a chic singing song but I can't get it out of my head. Willie's guitar with Nora Jones' piano is wonderful on "Lonestar". I never imagined Willie and Keith Richards on the same song but I can't get enough of "Dead Flowers", crazy lyrics and all. If you've ever liked Willie and like the "duets" blend with other music styles, you have to get this CD. This CD will reach out across the age groups. I love it and so does my 14 yr old country music fan daughter. The only one I don't like is "Stardust" where Aaron Neville went overboard with his "warbaling" voice. My next quest is "Kicking and Alive", Willie's CD from his 70th Birthday TV show. That duet with Steven Tyler is KICKIN!Stars & Guitars Overview
