The Dirty Boogie ReviewI've been a fan of Brian Setzer since his days with the stray cats, and I'm still a fan. This Cd is definitely a rocker and a swinger, his style stayed pretty much the same, I'll define it as orchestrated rockabilly. There's some good rockabilly stuff here like "This Cat's On A Hot Tin Roof", "The Dirty Boogie", "This Old House", his own remake of "Rock This Town", and "Switchblade 327". The boogie and jump tunes are just as great, he does an excellent job with Louis Prima's "Jump Jive An' Wail", a really great duet with Gwen Stefani from the group No Doubt called "You're The Boss", and his own treatment to the Lieber & Stoller tune "Nosey Joe", a nice twangy feel to the Skyliners hit "Since I Don't Have You", a credible version of Bobby Darin's "As Long As I'm Singin'", and a cool rendition of the instrumental hit "Sleepwalk". If you like rockabilly and some jump boogie give this disc a listen to.The Dirty Boogie OverviewJapanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. 2009.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Last Man Standing - The Duets ReviewDuets album are always tricky endeavors. Very seldom they succeed. The long awaited "Last Man Standing" is a pleasant exception to the rule. The record features no less than 21 collaborations. The song selection is a balanced choice of Jerry Lee classics and "new" material for the Killer. The album rightfully avoids the obvious selections as "Great Balls of Fire", which are well enough left alone. In stead the selections play Jerry Lee's strengths amazingly well. The album opens with a strong rocker featuring Jimmy Page, but leans heavy into Country material, the Killer's main strength.
Some of the "new" songs here as Springsteen's Pink Cadillac sound as if they were written fro Lewis, or at least with Lewis in mind. The "old" material works just as well as when he recorded it first. Though out the album the guest musicians put themselves in service of Jerry Lee and the song, thus avoiding a trap many duets albums fall for, where the guests get too much spotlight and the main star disappears in the shadow. This is a Jerry Lee Lewis album first and foremost. Only when called for the album goes in full duet mode. "Just Bummin' Around", a collaboration with Merle Haggard, one of the albums highlights, sounds like two friends sharing some good times, "Hadacohl Boogie" allows Buddy Guy to rip loose.
Last man standing doesn't really have flaws worth mentioning. The record does Jerry Lee justice and is one of his finest releases in many years. It works almost just as well as a greatest hits package as a showcase of his talents and is certainly a fine addition to such a package. Not to be missed by fan or casual passerby alike. It's a Killer.
Last Man Standing - The Duets OverviewTwenty-two rock and country legends duet with Jerry Lee Lewis on this incredible package, celebrating The Killer's impact on American music. Among the luminaries igniting these all-new recordings of seminal rock 'n' roll are Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Little Richard, Merle Haggard, Neil Young, and more.

Ignition ReviewIt's nice to see Brian Setzer back doing what he does best, good straight ahead neo-rockabilly. Coming very quick off the heels of his BS Orchestra cd "Vavoom", I thought this might be a hurriedly slapped together project. But that's not the case at all. As it turns out, this is the best material I've heard from Setzer in many years. This new stripped down trio of his sounds every bit as good and tight as the Stray Cats unit of the 80's. This CD starts out with the good rockin' title tune "Ignition". Then on the next song "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days" he veers a little bit towards country. It reminds me a lot of the song "Six Days On The Road", but the guitar sound reminds me of Bill Kirchen from his Commander Cody days. "Hellbent" is one mean rock and roller that contains some of the most fierce guitar licks on the album. I saw him perform this song on T.V. and he just tore the house down doing this song. "Hot Rod Girl" has single written all over it. It reminds me a lot of his music from the Stray Cats days. "8 Track" is a great tune where Setzer offers up his best Slim Whitman imitation, and yodels his way through this song, and at the same time laying down some very hot and cool rockabilly licks. "59" is another song that could be single material. The cheesy lyrics have the 50's written all over it with words like "everything I have is from '59. My first guitar and that girl of mine". But the music, with it's muscular neo-rockabilly sound, is very 21st century. "Santa Rosa Rita" starts out with a nice spanish style guitar, then changes pace and goes into a full tilt rocker. The numerous rhythm changes really give it a unique sound. "Get 'Em On The Ropes" is my favorite song on the album. This is an excellent barroom type rock and roll song that has a lot of attitude. And a very catchy tune at that. "Dreamsville" is the one slow dance number here. It's another tune with a real 50's flavor to it with it's "shoop shoop wah" chorus sung by the Brianaires. The album ends with the ultra cool instrumental "Malaguena" that reminds me a little of Dick Dale with it's mean sounding surf mixed with a beautiful spanish guitar sound. Four minutes of pure delight and a great way to end a fine album. When it comes to rockabilly, Mr. Setzer has a way of putting the pretenders and wanabees in their place. He IS the King of modern rockabilly, and shows us on "Ignition" that he's back!Ignition Overview

Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) ReviewI saw the Brian Setzer Orchestra two years back when they did a Christmas show here in Wisconsin, and I'm seeing them this holiday season as well, so I figured this would be a great disc to buy. And was I ever right! This disc does a much better job of capturing the fun atmosphere and high energy music of the band than their previous DVD release did. The band sounds just as good as they do on both of their Christmas CD's, and watching the band mambers get into the music while playing it, makes it even more fun for the viewer. The highlight of the disc (and of their live show in general) is when they play the "Nutcracker Suite" for an encore. While often considered a "novelty" swing band, the Nutcracker really shows that all members of the band are world-class musicians first and foremost. It was good to see a few non-Christmas Setzer classics in the playlist, but "Rumble in Brighton" and "Fishnet Stockings" seem odd choices for a Christmas show. Overall, great Christmas fun for all viewers, and I highly recommend it!Brian Setzer - Christmas Extravaganza (2005) Overview

Queen of Rockabilly ReviewI heard an excerpt of this CD on NPR along with an interview of Wanda Jackson. The first and just about only lady of Rockabilly was friends with Elvis and should be more of a legend that she is. And she is still around, still making music.
Wanda's voice is absolutely unique; once you hear her raspy, dirty-girl version of "Let's Have a Party" you may be as hooked as I was. Her voice has great variety, her arrangements are classic. Since Amazon puts up clips for you to hear, listen to "Let's Have a Party" and "Fujiyama Mama" for starters.
I bought this CD and played it for my rock n' roll loving mate and he was absolutely smitten. He had never heard of Wanda Jackson, but now she's his favorite.
If you love Elvis, Rock 'n Roll, you will adore Wanda Jackson and this CD is not only great for the songs it includes but it has SO MANY OF THEM. You cannot go wrong with this CD.Queen of Rockabilly Overview

Dig That Crazy Christmas ReviewThe Brian Setzer Orchestra has done it again. The big band orchestra has made one of the ulitmate Christmas records, and DIG THAT CRAZY CHRISTMAS needs to be part of any Christmas and music collection. Professional guitarist and singer Brian Setzer, along with his professional big band puched out yet another great piece of work. These cats can swing like no other musicians out there, and they definately know the swing genre on a professional level. Setzer adds flare to this musical art with his own amzing guitar licks of classical, jazz, and rockabily. The horns and woodwinds provide the big band with most of the pieces' melodies, but Brian and his female singers perform beautiful musical lines as well. The bass player is one cool cat, for he keeps the melody and harmony moving as he and Setzer make quick and perfect transitions of passing chords all over their bass and guitar necks. The songs off this swing record are old and new hits arranged to Setzer's unique take on the swing genre. It gives all tracks just a fun and up beat feel to their sound and makes me wonder why there aren't any Mainstream bands performing this musical art. Definately pick up DIG THAT CRAZY CHRISTMAS for the next holiday season or of course, for those out there who also celebrate Christmas In July.
Stand out tracks include:
"Dig That Crazy Santa Claus"
"Angels We Have Heard On High"
"Gettin' In The Mood (For Christmas)"
"Zat You Santa Claus?"
"My Favorite Things"
"You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?"Dig That Crazy Christmas OverviewDig The Crazy Christmas is the rockin follow up to Boogie Woogie Christmas. Features Christmas classics such as 'White Christmas', 'Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!', 'What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?' and more. Produced by Brian Setzer and Dave Darling. With His Hot & Blue Guitar ReviewI agree with RedTunicTroll's review - I've waited a long time to see this great album re-issued on CD (hence the five star rating). I would add that the remastering is excellent. However, I am very sorry to say that Varese (the re-issue label) has substituted an alternate demo take of "Country Boy" instead of the full band version that appears on the original album. The version of "Country Boy" on this CD has just Cash with his guitar. It's a nice version of the song, but the one on the original album has Perkins on guitar and Grant on bass. I know this for certain because I have an original copy of this album from the late 1950s - it's a very beat-up copy, but it plays well enough for me to say without a doubt that Varese made a mistake! With His Hot & Blue Guitar Overview

13 Drinking Songs ReviewLookout... this twisted little gem is only half the story. 13 Drinking Songs is a mostly acoustic CD, sonically quite rootsy -- mostly just guitar and vocals (with the occasional random interruption from another genre). Lyrically, however, the bent is decidedly raunchy, debaucherous, and quite funny, simultaneously pulling from obscure intellectual humor and sex/bathroom jokes. Adolescents on speed, masquerading as a "lounge/folk" act.
Compared to their live show, 13 Drinking Songs is subtle (a strange thing to be saying). Live, it's just the two guys on stage (Buck F. Naked and Dave A. Shameless), but they generate more energy than most 4 and 5 piece bands. And they are quite possible the loudest 2-man "acoustic" act ever. 13 Drinking Songs isn't their only CD, and it may not even by their best, but it's certainly an essential part of one of the most unusual and original acts out there.
What's the word??? Ask Buck, he'll tell you...13 Drinking Songs Overview13 Drinking Songs is a happy and heroic stroll through a world of sex, booze, and religion. The sound is decidedly acoustic and pleasing, but there's a viciousness and dark humor that keeps poking its fist through the guitar and harmonies. And there's certainly something to offend everyone here. James Taylor for punks? Worth the price of admission for the picture of Buck's sister on the back of the CD.

Legends Of Guitar : Country, Vol. 1 ReviewThe guitar's evolution from rhythm to lead was paralleled by the increasing renown of its country players. But even with the guitar's lead role, Nashville's system often subordinated the stardom of pickers to the vocalists (or band leaders) on whose records they performed. Guitar Player's 1990 collection highlights seventeen stellar guitar performances, ranging from hotshot slingers like Joe Maphis whose instrumentals serve up his flying fingers front-and-center, to brilliant players like Grady Martin, whose Mexicali-flavored picking serves as a duet to Marty Robbins' vocal on "El Paso."
The range of musical and guitar playing styles presented here is astonishing. Maphis and his disciple Larry Collins flat pick up a storm in "Hurricane." Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West duel with guitar and steel on "The Night Rider." Earl "Joaquin" Murphey provides swinging steel in Spade Cooley's big-band. Merle Travis shows off his acoustic fingerpicking talents (as opposed to the honky-tonk he's more commonly known for) on "Cannon Ball Stomp," and Chet Atkins (backed by Homer and Jethro) shows off his variation of Travis' style on "Galloping on the Guitar." Leon McAuliffe (of Bob Wills' Texas Playboys) and Leon Rhodes (of Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours) shine on a pair of instrumentals.
Carl Perkins, remembered today mostly for his rockabilly sides demonstrates his exceptional country skills on "Tennessee," an early side waxed for Sun. Later samplings include the chiming 12-string of Roger McGuinn supporting the picking of Clarence White on the Byrds' "Nashville West," and Reggie Young's 1981 work on Merle Haggard's loping "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink."
Additional highlights include Bud Isaacs watershed pedal steel appearance on Webb Pierce's "Slowly" and Doc Watson's folk-country fingerpicked cover of John D. Loudermilk's "Windy and Warm." The inclusion of longtime Sons of the Pioneers guitarist Roy Lanham's bebop playing on "Lost Weekend," is a fine, though not particularly relevant to the theme of the collection - too bad a Pioneer's side couldn't be included. The disc's lack of chronological sequencing is a bit puzzling. Audio quality is generally excellent (with a few pops and crackles on some of the earlier transcription work), and Rich Kienzle's extensive liner notes are thorough and engaging.
4-1/2 stars, if Amazon allowed fractional ratings.Legends Of Guitar : Country, Vol. 1 Overview

The Golden Era of Rock 'n' Roll: 1954-1963 ReviewCompiled to celebrate rock and roll's 50th anniversary this year, this Hip-O three-disc, 62 song set features some of the best sound treatment these evergreens have received in the CD era. Gavin Lurssen's exceptional remastering allows you to clearly hear the Coasters' bass-tenor harmony-comedy in 1958's "Yakety Yak" and the Cadets' in 1956's still-weird operetta "Stranded in the Jungle." You hear the rollicking piano behind the guitar solo in Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City," and the twangy guitar intros to Richie Valens and the Everly Brothers' (not to mention original twangy guitar Duane Eddy's) signature songs.
And signature songs, one from each artist, is all executive producer Andy MacKaie's team seemed to have room for in this expansive collection. One song each from titans like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Rick Nelson and Buddy Holly. In most cases he safely relied on their first hits ("Maybelline," "Tutti Fruitti") but also allowed hints of the 1960s producer-dominated era in tracks from the Four Seasons and Beach Boys. Hearing "Rock Around the Clock" and "Tequila" again recalls how popular these songs remained in films and television more than three decades after first charting.
Despite Billy Altman's pedantic liner notes, the set deserves five stars for the sheer number and quality of hits present (more than 30 #1 hits and more than enough songs associated with the era.) Too many artists are missing for "The Golden Era" to be definitive: no Elvis, nothing from the Cameo-Parkway or Phil Spector eras, a curious Sam Cooke track. But this collection is a worthwhile introduction or summary of rock and roll's first 10 years, an era fading from oldies station playlists and for today's senior citizens (teenagers when Elvis hit in 1954) becoming the anachronism the big bands were to a previous generation. Essential music, worthwhile here but more so in individual anthologies from Berry, Holly, and others.

Hot Rod Lincoln ReviewIf you're gonna throw a party, first ya need the beer, then comes the entertainment. And that would be the dancing girls and this Bill Kirchen "Hot Rod Lincoln Live" cd. If your a fan of Commander Cody, I promise you'll love this. If you've never heard of the ole Commander, think "Hot Rod Lincoln". And you really haven't heard "Hot Rod Lincoln" till you've heard this funky 8 minute version that's played on the same "Coal Burning" guitar that was used on the original tune from 1971. This new version is soooo good that you'll press track 4 over and over again until your dancing feet wear out. I don't think there has ever been anybody around who has as deep of a twangy guitar sound as Bill Kirchen. Not even Duane Eddy, who is just one of the many musicians that Kirchen playfully mimics on Hot Rod Lincoln. But this isn't the only great song on here. Kirchen throws in a couple Commander Cody songs from the good old days. "Lookin at the world through a windshield", and one of my favorites "too much fun". BIll Kirchen isn't any novelty act though. This guy writes great original songs like "secrets of love", "swing fever" and a great rockin tune "rockin' over China". I highly recommend running out and getting this before your next party. You'll definitly want to have this cd handy, just in case the beer runs out.Hot Rod Lincoln Overview

Hot Rod Guitar: The Danny Gatton Anthology ReviewMy first exposure to the late, great Danny "The Humbler" Gatton was on "Austin City Limits." I tuned in to watch somebody else, and he was the second act. He came out and just looked like he was kidding around, and not really getting serious. But the sounds... boy howdy, that guitar was talking, singing, laughing, crying! Like it says in the extensive liner notes: "Danny could play anybody else's music; nobody else could play Danny's music." This guy can play ANYTHING on his Telecaster! Hot Rod Guitar is a comprehensive anthology, showcasing Danny playing rock, jazz, country, showtunes ... you name it. Other guitarists named Gatton "The Humbler," but anybody who appreciates fine musicianship will enjoy this 2-CD set. Buy it now, thank me later.Hot Rod Guitar: The Danny Gatton Anthology Overview

Rockabilly Xmas ReviewDon't be fooled by the Rockabilly in the title because even fans of rock 'n roll might think it's just early country rock but this collection is so much more. Obscure. Sure, but there are no bad tracks on this collection - they're all cool, fun and definitely rock 'n roll. There are a couple where the sound quality can generously be described as recorded next door but if you're a fan of obscure rock 'n roll or you're making your Christmas CD and want to sprinkle in a few tracks no one else has ... this is great. In this collection, you get some rockabilly but mainly just a lot of great early rock from rhythm & bluesy rock to precursor garage rock to early surf guitar to as mentioned by the other reviewer - novelty songs but these are no "chipmunks-songs," they are all rock 'n roll. If you like your rock n' roll a little garage, a little rough around the edges but all done with passion and a great driving beat - you will want this CD!Rockabilly Xmas Overview

Play ReviewLet me first start off by saying that this CD is not for everyone - especially those who are looking for a typical Brad Paisley "Time Well Wasted" type album. "Play" has only four songs that have vocals on them, which makes it pretty much a bluegrass/instrumental album. Very well done, but very non-traditional and not "cookie cutter" radio ready country music. It's a big gamble, and a lot of people are not gonna be happy about it.
That being said - wow, can this guy play the strings! Listen to him tear them up on the first two tracks "Huckleberry Jam", and "Turf's Up".There are also some mellow instrumental tunes such as "Kim", which is one of my personal favorites. The album is a little similar to Union Station and Nickel Creek type guitar play. Different stuff - and you really have to hear it for yourself to decide if it's for you or not.
Overall, I find it very interesting and ironic that two of country music's biggest stars (kenny chesney and brad paisley) both come out with non-traditional country albums within a month of each other. Kenny with his island style, and now Brad with his guitar play. Maybe this will shake up the music industry a little bit, and open the door to a wider range of new music coming into the genre.Play Overview

Guitar Slinger ReviewGuitar Slinger is the second installment from the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and like the previous self-titled album, this one rocks as well. Setzer continues with his sound of rockabilly mixed with big band and intense energy. This album is a tour de force of Setzer's talent, from his writing three-quarters of the songs, arranging the orchestration of all the songs, and incredible guitar work. Setzer is one of the most underrated guitarists around, maybe because he's stuck in the past, but he is definitely a master of his instrument.
This album starts off on the right foot with a cover of the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan's "The House Is Rockin'". I'm sure Stevie smiled on this jazzed up rendition full of horns. Only two more covers appear on this album, "Town Without Pity" and "(Every Time I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone". Both frame Setzer's musical ability and that great big band sound. He rocks out with "Hoodoo Voodoo Doll," "Rumble In Brighton" and "Johnny Kool". This is another album that mixes up-tempo rocking tunes with smooth, mellow songs.
If you've been following Setzer for a while, or just enjoy the BSO's rocking big band sound, this is definitely another album to add to your collection.Guitar Slinger Overview

Boogie Woogie Christmas ReviewThis Christmas album has such a big sound that it makes other Christmas albums pale in comparison. Influenced by Johnny Mercer, Les Brown, Louis Prima, Bobby Darin and Duane Eddy, Brian Setzer is a retro genius. Standout numbers include a swinging "Nutcracker Suite", "Cactus Christmas" (think Cow-Cow Boogie), and an unexpectedly touching "O Holy Night". This album epitomizes Christmas cool. Highly, highly recommended. Play in conjunction with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Leon Redbone for a snazzy, jazzy retro Christmas!Boogie Woogie Christmas Overview
