Son Of Skip James ReviewFans of Dion's previous acoustic blues album Bronx In Blue will certainly want to check out his new CD: Son Of Skip James. Sticking to a similar formula as that aforementioned record, this time around we're treated to a broader palette of musical instruments to help flesh out the the sound of the tracks within. Here, harmonica, organ and piano--both electric and acoustic--spice up the guitar and percussion backing to great effect. Highlights include a fairly straight cover of Chuck Berry's "Nadine," one of the few tracks on the album that strays slightly from the traditional blues format; "My Babe"--written by Willie Dixon and made famous by Little Walter--with its infectious riff; a stripped-down take of Bob Dylan's "Baby, I'm In The Mood For You," which Dion himself first recorded for Columbia in 1965; and a searing, dueling-acoustics version of Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession (Over Judgment Day)," probably my own personal fave on the CD!
Another surprise here is The Thunderer--a song based on a Phyllis McGinley verse that tells the story of Catholic Saint Jerome, the man who "translated the Bible." It has the same melodic feel as some of Dion's best work, primarily due to a tasteful--almost 70's style--electric piano backing. And, for those who might normally bristle somewhat at the thought of a record that contains an overt religious stamp or two (i.e. usually me!), fear not, it all works here, standing side-by-side with the broader themes of faith and redemption that permeate the framework of the blues in general. Furthermore, it's simply another side of the same artist who previously recorded a string of gospel albums during the 1980's.
Special mention needs to be made once again regarding Dion's (underrated IMO) acoustic guitar playing and timeless vocals. His finger-picking is front and center on songs such as Tommy McClennan's "I'm A Guitar King," while his overall range and effortless phrasing show him to be as vocally nimble as ever--bending, turning and soaring at every curve with the greatest of ease! At age 68, he's showing no signs of wear or tear.
Overall, an even stronger record than the Grammy® nominated Bronx In Blue, with richer colors and more variety. Highly recommended!Son Of Skip James Overview

Kamchatka ReviewNot quite up to the standard of PLANKTON ( who is ), but not far behind. This is very much in the best tradition of CREAM / HENDRIX and other guitar 3 piece groups from the past. Saying that, these guys don't copy, they create. Although rooted in the classic bands from the past, their sound is more 2005 than 1970.

Talk Is Cheap ReviewThis album made the top 40 album charts back in 1988 and went Gold. It got very good reviews and then was completely forgotten about. This album is a stone cold classic and every song on here is damn good.The band that Keith assembled for this project is one of the best bands ever, outside of the Rolling Stones. They have their own funky, rockin' groove, unbeatable energy and sound like they have been playing together forevor, instead of for mere weeks. If James Brown reallly wants to make a comeback, all he has to do is cover the opening song-"Big Enough". It is done in the classic J.B style and features Bootsy Collins on bass, Maceo Parker on alto sax and Bernie Worrell on organ. Ex- Stone Mick Taylor even puts in an appearance on "I Could Have Stood You Up", a rockabilly tune so authentic, it sounds like it was written for Elvis in 1956. It even features Chuck Berry's keyboard man Johnnie Johnson tearing up the keys as only he can. "Make No Mistake" is one of Keith's very best ballads and features his most soulful vocal ever. It has the Memphis Horns on it to give it real southern soul and funk. "You Don't Move Me" is a lyrical bitch slap to his old partner/nemesis Mick Jagger.(Mick retaliated with "Shoot off Your Mouth" later the same year on his limp "Primitive Cool" solo album.) He called this band the X-Pensive Winos and the other members included Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Steve Jordan on drums, Ivan Neville on keyboards and Charlie Drayton on bass. They even went on tour and released a good live album, although the album didn't come out until 1991(the tour was in '88). There is some good New Orleans cajun funk on "Rockawhile" with Sara Dash wailing soulfully on background vocals and Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural pumping away on his accordion. The band really locks into a groove on this one. This album features better songs and more committed playing than most Stones albums from this era and is way funkier than any of Sir Mick's spotty solo albums. The next time Mick wants to do a solo project, he should hire the X-Pensive Winos featuring Keith Richards.Talk Is Cheap Overview1988 debut solo album from the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist that was co-produced with drummer Steve Jordan.This also marked the first appearance of his backing band, The X-Pensive Winos, who provide loose but disciplined backing for the Rock hero.Veteran Funk masters William "Bootsy" Collins and keyboardist Bernie Worrell contributed their talents as well.

Ignition ReviewIt's nice to see Brian Setzer back doing what he does best, good straight ahead neo-rockabilly. Coming very quick off the heels of his BS Orchestra cd "Vavoom", I thought this might be a hurriedly slapped together project. But that's not the case at all. As it turns out, this is the best material I've heard from Setzer in many years. This new stripped down trio of his sounds every bit as good and tight as the Stray Cats unit of the 80's. This CD starts out with the good rockin' title tune "Ignition". Then on the next song "5 Years, 4 Months, 3 Days" he veers a little bit towards country. It reminds me a lot of the song "Six Days On The Road", but the guitar sound reminds me of Bill Kirchen from his Commander Cody days. "Hellbent" is one mean rock and roller that contains some of the most fierce guitar licks on the album. I saw him perform this song on T.V. and he just tore the house down doing this song. "Hot Rod Girl" has single written all over it. It reminds me a lot of his music from the Stray Cats days. "8 Track" is a great tune where Setzer offers up his best Slim Whitman imitation, and yodels his way through this song, and at the same time laying down some very hot and cool rockabilly licks. "59" is another song that could be single material. The cheesy lyrics have the 50's written all over it with words like "everything I have is from '59. My first guitar and that girl of mine". But the music, with it's muscular neo-rockabilly sound, is very 21st century. "Santa Rosa Rita" starts out with a nice spanish style guitar, then changes pace and goes into a full tilt rocker. The numerous rhythm changes really give it a unique sound. "Get 'Em On The Ropes" is my favorite song on the album. This is an excellent barroom type rock and roll song that has a lot of attitude. And a very catchy tune at that. "Dreamsville" is the one slow dance number here. It's another tune with a real 50's flavor to it with it's "shoop shoop wah" chorus sung by the Brianaires. The album ends with the ultra cool instrumental "Malaguena" that reminds me a little of Dick Dale with it's mean sounding surf mixed with a beautiful spanish guitar sound. Four minutes of pure delight and a great way to end a fine album. When it comes to rockabilly, Mr. Setzer has a way of putting the pretenders and wanabees in their place. He IS the King of modern rockabilly, and shows us on "Ignition" that he's back!Ignition Overview

Making Movies ReviewAlthough it produced no hit singles, "Making Movies" is beyond question Dire Straits' masterpiece. Mark Knopfler's ripping guitar forms the backdrop for seven beautiful, haunting, fiercely personal cuts. Every song perfectly captures a deep human emotion, from the bitter heartache of "Romeo And Juliet" to the angry defiance of "Solid Rock" to the steamy lustfulness of "Expresso Love". There are no weak songs, though the bouncy and playful "Les Boys", which ends the album, seems a bit out of place compared to the six deadly earnest songs that precede it.
Yes, the album owes a heavy debt of gratitude to Springsteen, with many cuts building on the Boss's signature guitar/organ/piano framework. But, Knopfler's vocal delivery and deft guitar work, plus the band's sparser and cleaner arrangements, never allow you to forget that you're listening to Dire Straits. Only "Tunnel Of Love", which sounds like a cross between "Thunder Road" and "Sandy" strays a little too far into Bruce's territory but for that the boys can be forgiven.
One tip: this album must be heard in its entirety to be fully appreciated. 12 X 5 ReviewThis is the remastered super audio CDs (SACD) of the Stones ABCKO catalog (which includes all the early Decca/London material. ABCKO acquired the Stones' catalog after Allen Klein became their manager in 1965. The legal battles during the 70s produced releases that the Stones opposed (they took out full page adds asking fans not to buy them), including the controversial Metamorphosis releases (which are now available on CD for the 1st time ever). But the sad fact is that the Stones lost control of their great early material. With these remastered SACD releases, we at last have some idea of what they really sounded like in the studio. I guess if we had these 40 years ago they would have ended up Greatest Rock And Roll Band in the Universe instead of just our tiny little World.
This is the Stones 2nd US album, released Oct 23, 1964. It cemented the early blues band legend with tracks from their famous Chess Studios session in Chicago during the 1st American tour (Muddy Waters helped carry their gear into the studio) and tracks recorded at Regent Sound in London. Essentially, this is the album that finalized their status as champions of Chicago blues.
The album starts with Check Berry's Around And Around, which the Stones had been doing as a show stopper in the UK, the big hits Time Is On My Side and It's All Over Now, and the great slow blues numbers Confessin' The Blues & Good Times Bad Times. Although they used to do a lot of instrumentals, 2120 S. Michigan seems to have survived as the only memory of this part of the early Stones familiar to most fans. Personally I always liked Congratulations, but never cared for their version of Susie Q, although it was very popular at the time.

This information comes from "It's Only Rock And Roll: The Ultimate Guide To The Rolling Stones" by Karnbach and Bernson and from my own collection.12 X 5 Overview12 X 5 includes material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) on their first US tour. Though this document of the group's early R&B period kicks off with a couple of covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's "Around and Around,") Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen. The acoustic-based, bluesy "Good Times, Bad Times" harkens back to even earlier, more seminal Stones influences than Berry, as does the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue," where the blues-obsessed Jagger's harp is featured a la his hero Little Walter.The downbeat, Arthur Alexanderish "Congratulations" is an effective expression of romantic melancholy, complete with acoustic guitar solo. The slide guitar chords on "Grown Up Wrong" echo another early blues influence, Elmore James. The milestones on this album are two R&B covers to which the Stones take more than a rote approach, "It's All Over Now" and the majestic "Time Is On My Side," which they make completely their own.

The Rolling Stones - Rock and Roll Circus ReviewThe Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus was released Oct 15, 1996. It is the long suppressed made-for-TV special recorded 28 years earlier on Dec 11-12, 1968 with The Who, John Lennon, Taj Mahal, Jethro Tull, Marianne Faithful, and Eric Clapton. The packaging is beautiful with a great 42 page glossy color booklet that has all the rare behind the scenes photos and a full account of things leading up to the event. The Who were red hot at the time and easily upstaged the Stones who were still struggling through their first major crisis after the removal of Brian (and his subsequent death) and attempting to figure out how to hold on to their status as the premier band. The Stones refused to release the recordings because their performances were not spectacular. Most reviewers agreed when they finally got to see the film themselves. However, what the film lacks in production (which was obviously amateurish) it makes up for in history. The Stones lackluster set of Jumpin' Jack Flash, Parachute Woman, No Expectations, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Sympathy For the Devil, and Salt Of The Earth are easily compensated by The Who's mini opera A Quick One While He's Away and Lennon and Clapton's Yer Blues. There are also dated period piece interviews with Mick and John and very amateurish introductions by the individual Stones, which when combined with the extremely amateurish set, acting, and cinematography amply demonstrate why this is one for Stones and rock history collectors. The Stones were right, it didn't work for them, and it is good that the release was delayed until it appealed to collectors and would not reflect on the reputation of the band.
Most people know the music, so in my reviews I try to give you data on the sessions and interesting facts connected with the songs and the album. Here we go:

Definitive Collection ReviewIn October of 2006 Chuck Berry will be 80 years old. Of the founders of rock `n' roll, he is today the one whose honor and esteem is most out of whack with his actual contributions. By any standards, Chuck Berry is one of the founding titans of rock. Musically, he contributed more than any other of the original inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elvis put rock `n' roll on the map, but Chuck is the one who drew it. Before Bob Dylan and the rash of great rock `n' roll song writers to spring up in the wake of Beatlemania, Chuck Berry was hands down the finest rock songwriter, with the lone exception of his equal Buddy Holly. It is only a slight over implication to state that most rock since Berry has been a variant of his original adaptation of rhythm and blues. And lyrically Berry was the most gifted lyricist before the advent of Bob Dylan. Of all the rock and roll performers, Berry was the easiest to understand when he sang, precisely pronouncing every word and for a very good reason: they were good words. Indeed, his diction was so superb that his earliest listeners refused to believe that he was a black man; they were convinced he was white. Chuck Berry has long been criticized for his lack of involvement in the Civil Rights movement and for reinforcing some negative images of black males, but by presenting himself as an undeniably intelligent and gifted black at a time when many whites were denying that blacks were as intelligent was itself an important contribution. Besides, working as a black crossover artist he was sometimes able to get his own back by subtle messaging. We all know, for instance, that in "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" he wasn't really talking about eye color. My hope is that for his birthday Berry will be recognized for what he was: the equal of anyone in making rock the popular musical form it became.
Apart from Berry's musical contributions, which were formidable, he brought a sense of playful theatricality that was key in defining early on that rock `n' roll, whatever else it was, was fun. Many of the early rock `n' rollers were great, great showmen in a way that few today aspire to be. Most contemporary performers rely on light shows, gimmicks, and props for their shows, but several early performers were precisely that: performers. To this day few guitarists have been as much fun to watch as Berry, not just during his legendary duck walks, but in a myriad of minor antics onstage.
But most of all, Chuck Berry has established a legacy of great, great songs. Most people know that the lone rock `n' roll song put on Voyager's data disc for any extraterrestrial who happens upon it was none other than Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Perhaps one day it will be as big a hit in Alpha Centauri as it has been on earth. What many today may not know is just how much very great music he produced. In fact, his string of hits outstrips nearly any of his contemporaries other than Elvis. His notorious stint in prison probably kept him from charting a few more hits (that he transported an underage girl across state lines is undeniable, but it is hard today to realize how vigorously he was prosecuted by St. Louis authorities and he certainly seems innocent of incitation to prostitution charges), but he eventually recovered from his ordeal to generate a second run of hits in the sixties.
Luckily, though in my and others' opinion Berry is not today given the credit he deserves for his major role in creating rock `n' roll, he has been exceedingly well served by a host of absolutely first rate anthologies. What I would like to do here is map out the five Chuck Berry collections I would most recommend. Each has its virtues and none any vices and it would be very hard to go wrong with any of them. I do think a couple of choices are better than others. Here are the main Chuck Berry collections available today:
CHESS BOX--If price is no consideration and you want almost all of the great music that Chuck Berry, this is unquestionably the one to get. The 3-CD set collects over 70 songs and has every one of the songs that the vast majority of music fans will have heard, all the way to his Christmas hit "Run Rudolph Run." There are a few cuts that are less than essential, but no current collection gives such a great view of his work as a whole, except for the complete collection of his Chess work, but in my opinion it collects too much that is of at most secondary interest.
ANTHOLOGY--Chess released this superb 2-CD culling from the larger CHESS BOX. Though less than half the price of the box, it collects over two-thirds of the songs, though without the Christmas songs that I frankly find endearing. But if you are willing to live without "Run Rudolph Run," this has just about all the Chuck Berry that most fans could crave.
GOLD--This is the big bargain of Chuck Berry anthologies. It contains all the major hits and familiar songs--though, again, without "Run Rudolph Run," which for some reason is omitted from almost all hits collections--and several nice extras as well. Though its 50 songs are slightly different than the one from the ANTHOLOGY, the heart of both collections is the same. If you don't own any Chuck Berry and are not sure that you want to spring the bucks for the CHESS BOX, this is probably the safest best. Lots of Chuck Berry for not very much money.
THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION--Well, no, this isn't definitive, but this newest Chuck Berry is arguably the finest single-disc edition. But here is the problem: The GOLD collection is only a buck more and contains 20 more songs. Plus, one of the 30 songs on this disc is the dreadful gimmick song "My Ding-A-Ling," a slightly ribald and not very good song that was Berry's last hit in the early seventies. My own belief is that shorter anthologies are improved by its exclusion.
THE GREAT TWENTY-EIGHT--This is back in print after being unavailable for a long time. Unlike THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, this is pretty much definitive. Most anthologies basically take the songs off this disc and then add to it. It is canonical in a way that none of the other discs is. Nonetheless, while I think it deserves five stars simply for the role it has played in introducing fans to Berry and for its historical importance, I think it has been surpassed by other collections. Also, the sound on the later discs is better than what you will find on this disc. (Caveat: I own an earlier version of this disc, and it is not impossible that on its re-release the remastered versions of the recordings have been utilized.) Still, for a long, long time this was the Chuck Berry disc to get.
So, if I were buying my first Chuck Berry disc and couldn't afford the CHESS BOX, which one would I go for? I would probably go with the GOLD collection. It is cheap, contains a heap of songs, and has decent sound quality. Then, if I were sufficiently moved to the point where I wanted more, I would go for the CHESS BOX. That really is the best one to get, but there are some really inexpensive compromises that one can make and still get a lot of music by one of the towering figures in rock `n' roll.Definitive Collection Overview

Boston ReviewYou are reading this, I hope, in order to decide whether or not to purchase this CD.
You are probably inordinately familiar with the album. It is an album, like "Rumours" or "Saturday Night Fever" or "Frampton Comes Alive", which captures and defines the best and worst of an era. It sounds like nothing else of the time.
Sure, it has a little Queen, a little southern boogie, a little ELO even...but it's a "Boston" sound, through and through.
There's no need to address the individual songs.
You know them. You love them. You have them memorized.
You know that the end of the album gets a little weak, but you probably kept replaying that one side anyways. Or at least MOST of the time.
So, the BIG question is...how well is the remastering done?
Well, you know how some remastering cleans things up with such detail and precision you feel like you are in the studio?
Or they expand the soundstage that you can "see" the players in their respective position?
Or the studio trickery comes alive inside your headphones, making your eyeballs swirl?
Not here. Which is perfect.
What Scholz and company have done is restore and preserve the original warm sound. No more pops, clicks or scratches. No more tape hiss from your old 8-tracks or cassettes.
The album never sounded "live" to begin with. There are no dramatic swoops, no bizarre effects.
The songs are mixed as a whole. Vocals are overdubbed, guitars are processed...this is not an attempt at reality, this is rock and roll fantasy.
And as such, it works phenomenally well. The instruments are warm and clear. The vocals soar operatically.
You'll sing along in your car or on your iPod in embarrassing fashion, and you'll air-guitar about half a dozen times. You won't be able to resist.
You'll recall all the fun you had in the seventies, and none of the bad fashion or haircuts.

Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock ReviewI spent the better part of four hours last weekend racing on an X-Box with a friend. The finest part was turning down the video soundtrack and substituting George Thorogood's 30 Years of Rock collection! Talk about adrenaline pumping tunes!! The collection and body of work offered by this man has stood the test of time over these years, and is summarized beautifully in this anthology. The only disappointment was "Ride On Josephine" is conspicuously absent from the CD. Oh well...can't have everthing. I'll just have to buy another thoroughly good Thorogood CD to get that track! Face The Promise ReviewA song-by-song review. I also added some comments from the man himself I read in a Detroit Free Press interview with Seger the day before the album was released. My perspective on Seger is that he's one of my favorite artists, his music has been incredibly inspirational to me, and I'm of the age that I go back to the Beautiful Loser album where we couldn't wait to go to "Katmandu" or be a "Travelin Man" ourselves.
As an album, this has the best collection of hard rock, mid-tempo numbers, and ballads since Stranger in Town, though nothing at the level of "We've Got Tonite" and "Hollywood Nights". Starting with Against the Wind I was wondering if Seger should stop with the rockers and focus on the country charts, however this album destroys that idea starting with Wreck This Heart and three other really solid rock songs.
1- "Wreck this Heart" A very Stones-like rocker, loose and vigorous. A great leadoff song!!! Seger's lyrics often are a point of view narrowly drawn to a specific age group and this shows that while he's 61, the pressures are those of a man with young children, which Seger has. Bob's always had a very special relationship with those 10 - 15 years younger than him, like me, as he provides insight to their experiences from a position of having just lived it with the perspective and wisdom that comes from experience yet still near to the experience. Great song.
2- "Wait for Me" - This song is really growing on me. Very inspirational, a very Bob-like ballad. Seger's voice soars into the bridge like it did with "Like A Rock". Another great song that requires some time to appreciate. Bob is as good a singer as ever in terms of putting a ton of soul into each song, his voice is even better in the mid and low notes with a little more gravel adding more levity, as if he needed more, however, he does concede the higher notes but that only hurts him on one song in this collection (the Loveless duet).
Seger's comments - I don't think anybody got it. In my mind you've got to have the discipline to allow your kids to make their mistakes. . . Sometimes I've got to get away, but I'll always come back.
3- "Face the Promise" - Hard guitar track like "Makin Thunderbirds". Good filler. Makes you think he's hangin' with the post-college crowd now though, working-class people are moving to North Dakota and Arizona, not away from there.
Seger's comments on "Face the Promise" - This is about small town kids looking at the big American dream. "I'm gonna to out and face the promise of the promised land. . .".
4- "No Matter Who You Are" - Great song. Mid-tempo rocker like "Still the Same", while the lyrics are reminiscent of "Against the Wind" in terms of providing strength by realization that we all have challenges.
Seger's Comments on "No Matter. . ." - You have to guard your special, pure thing and cherish it.
5- "Are You" - Drum driven song, rocker with a great groove line and classic Seger lyrics. Memorable line, "This is a whole new faith almost like a new religion". He also does a great "Ow" backed by the soul singers, this one will get cranked!!!
6 - "Simplicity" - Music sounds like it came from a band named "The Time", an old band associated with Prince. Lyrics are obvious and contrived. Filler.
7 - "No More" - Bob singing against a background of classic strings. The lyrics are a negative indictment of how Bush got us into Iraq. While I agree with his political position, I would have preferred he chose different lyrics for this song, they sound mismatched, with uplifting music coupled with a negative indictment.
"Real Mean Bottle" with Kid Rock - a Vince Gill song written by Gill as a homage to Merle Haggard (Kid's a big fan of Haggard). Lots of long notes that take advantage of Gill's great voice which cause Kid and Seger to strain in places. Seger and Kid turn this into a 50's style boogie-woogie rocker, including rock piano. I am a little underwhelmed with this song, Bob's covers are usually excellent choices like Rodney Crowell's "Shame on the Moon". This song doesn't do Kid justice either. Because the lyrics are fun, and everyone loves boogie-woogie, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a minor hit on the Country charts.
Seger's producer on "Real Mean Bottle" - He (Kid) came in and said, "Man we've got to rock this thing." He started singing it at double speed with all this attitude."
9- "Won't Stop" - A very sparse song, acoustic guitar, Bob, and a little drum. A counter to "Real Mean Bottle" preaching the dark reality of obsessive behavior. Bob sings great in this song, however because there is very little accompaniment, you can hear how his voice has weakened from the pinnacle of his singing on "Live Bullet" and "Stranger in Town". Still, Bob was always much, much more than the range and power of his voice. His talent has always been writing music and lyrics, making the personal universal and the universal personal, making music that is either a joy to listen or sustenance for trying times.
Seger on "Won't Stop" - We were kind of making fun of drinking (Real Mean Bottle). . . but then I wanted a serious song about addiction - like, I don't condone this.
10 - "Between" - Contains the best lead guitar on the album by Kenny Greenburg. A beat similar to Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry".
Seger's comments - I think my favorite song on the record is Between. I just love the groove. I love the way I sang it, I love the way I played it, I love the way the girls sang it. And it says exactly what I wanted to say.
11 - "The Answer's in the Question" w/Patty Loveless - I loved the lyrics and the melody and the basic structure of the song. However there are some incredibly poor choices in which notes to hit that had me physically cringing three times, all three times because I think Bob can no longer hit the high notes. I think this could be a huge country hit, but they need to release a single version that eradicates the cringe factor.
Seger's Comments - "I thought what a cool idea for a song: The answer is in the question. "Will you be home late again?" OK, if you ask someone that, there's something wrong.
12 - "The Long Goodbye" - Should have been placed between two rockers because as the last song, it causes the album to end with a whimper, I would have preferred seeing the album end with "No Matter Who You Are". Some interesting musical sounds and verses that linger after the song ends, "The long goodbye continues on, through fog and rain and far beyond, you stay awhile and then your gone again" is haunting and some of his best work.
Seger's Comments - It's about Alzheimer's disease. I dealt with that with my aunt after my mother died. And now, my wife is dealing with it her father. So it became fresh again.
Summary - this album is not perfect, where it's pretty easy to make the case Live Bullet and Stranger in Town were. Because Seger is not prolific, his fans have much higher expectations than those of say, Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen who publish a lot more music. This album is definitely one every Seger fan will want, enjoy and savor for years to come. For those that are too young to have grown up with Seger, I recommend buying the following songs which you can find at Apple's Music Store: Wreck This Heart, Wait for Me, and No Matter Who You Are.
Is the DVD worth the extra bucks? I'd say yes for two reasons, the DVD includes the video for "Like A Rock". I don't know of any song where the singing and lead guitar melded so perfectly, only Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart doing "People Get Ready" comes close. It also has some great concert footage from '78 of Seger doing two songs in San Diego, which really displays how great a performer he is, though his band was really lacking on those two songs. I was very disappointed there were no videos from this album on the DVD, Wait for Me is released as a single, why not at least that song's video? I did appreciate the short interviews they did with Seger showing him working on the album but really disappointed only two old videos were included besides the two song concert footage.Face The Promise OverviewBob Seger is one of the few truly defining voices of American music. Classic, urgent, honest, and timeless; Seger has sold nearly fifty million albums in his career. Earned eleven platinum and seven multi-platinum awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. "Against the Wind" won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo in 1980. Capitol Records will release Bob Seger's first studio album in eleven years, Face The Promise, on September 12th. The album's first single is "Wait For Me;" the new album also features the tracks "Real Mean Bottle" with Kid Rock and "The Answer's In The Question" with Patty Loveless.

Ho Ho Hoey: Complete Collection ReviewI have been aboard for the entire HO HO Hoey series, 1, 2, & 3. Then came along "The Best of Ho Ho Hoey" with 1 or 2 new songs that weren't on the other discs so yes I had to buy it. When looking through a Best Buy store, I found this 2 CD set which includes almost every song from the 3 but not quite. A few omissions but still a "fun" Christmas record at a great price with a few "new" tunes. I have noticed the trend of bands like (Chicago, Brian Setzer, Martina McBride, etc.) to just re-release the old Christmas season discs a year or 2 later with 1 or 2 new songs instead of recording at least an EP of new music and releasing that instead. It makes a fan a little bitter and resentful that to get the new tunes, you have to shell out cash for an album you already have. Don't worry, by Christmas next year or 2006, another version of this will be released. Aside from all that, most of these songs rock and you get a lot of fun instrumental renditions of classic Christmas songs, my favorite being, "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch". This is at a great price so get it before they disappear. Someone please stop this re-releasing though, record and release a new full length instead and stop screwing the fans of your music! I don't want to fail to mention that He plays all of the instruments on this except for drums on a couple of tracks, woah!Ho Ho Hoey: Complete Collection Overview

Wish I could've seen these guys live when they were touring around North Carolina! A rock station in Wilmington is still playing 'Slow Burn', which apparently appeared on the station's 'Home Grown' CD, but they were listed as 'The Bleechers' at the time. Backtracks (2CD+DVD) ReviewTwo discs 46,78 minutes each approximately. The sound is uniformly good. The tracks have been cleaned up a bit,and the band comes through loud and clear. The DVD is icing on the cake,with a number of great performances. The box itself is cleverly done. The outer box resembles an amp/speaker,with all the settings on 10. Inside this is a fold-out package with the three discs,which snap-in,which seems to be the way record companies are packaging things these days. The booklet consists of many color photographs of the band on stage, and reproductions of band info/biographies etc. There are two pages devoted to track information,which while printed in small typeface,is pretty complete.
The first disc consists primarily of singles and tracks (not on the U.S. release) starting with the band's first album,"High Voltage". These tracks show the band from their formative (1974) period,and are presented in chronological order,which is helpful,as it shows the growth of this band into the r&r juggernaut they became. Not all the tracks are full-on r&r("Love Song" as an example),but by the time listeners hear track four, "R.I.P.(Rock in Peace)",this is the AC/DC familiar (sample lyric,"I get my kicks playing my licks and laying my chicks down on Route 66") to everyone who likes primal,full-on r&r. Even the slower songs (like "Crabsody in Blue") have that dirty,primal sound that the band was so famous for.
There are many listeners who feel that the (late) Bon Scott era was a high water mark for the band,and listening to the tracks with Scott,its hard to disagree. Scott's voice is pure,visceral r&r at its best. However,with the addition of Brian Johnson,replacing Scott,the band seemed to solidify into the overwhelming,powerful group that went on to define what r&r is all about.
Disc two is filled with what AC/DC was/is all about-live in front of an ecstatic audience. Starting with "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap",the band shows what real deal r&r is all about. The vocals are over the top yet spot on. The sound of the guitars will leave marks in your head. And the rhythm section (the bands secret weapon) keeps everything moving-seemingly propelling the rest of the band to greater heights. This is a band that had not one,but two great vocalists. Never mind which one listeners feel is better-on this collection it doesn't really matter. The pounding,exciting groove laid down by the band,as a whole,is simply devastating.
Everyone will have their own favorites from this ("Live Wire","Let There Be Rock",just two examples) collection. Suffice to say,if you don't know what AC/DC is all about-give this a listen. This collection will tell you all you need to know. For fans of the band-pick this up soon-you won't be disappointed. In this day and age of limp reformations of old bands,and new imitators,AC/DC clearly defines what makes great rock & roll. This is timeless music,laid down with no thoughts except to pump out the best music possible.

Black Water Rising ReviewThe music one hears on the radio these days calling itself Rock truly offers no depth except catchy lyrics and the same played out riffs. Black Water Rising stands apart from the rest and rejuvenates the scene with low end bass lines and down trodden guitar riffs that would be commonplace on a Sabbath recording. The vocals aren't the same rough grunting tone heard by most Hard Rock groups and Rob's audible tones are on point as well as being backed by strong lyrics with something more to say then the usual Modern Rock cliche of how some girl ripped out his heart.
Fore the most part BWR stays at a mid pace with a ton of groove to keep you hooked. Though the band does kick up the pace occasionally such as the head bang worthy romp "Blessed" where we hear chugging gritty riffs and bombastic drums. Though where this album stands apart most from the hundreds of cloned Rock groups these days are the melodic guitar leads. These leads can range from simple tinge backdrop to roaring solo's and truly show a progressive edge. Safe to say I enjoyed the groovy and harsh guitars that BWR succeeds at.
All in all I have to admit this band unlike any other popular group out today truly grasps what we need to hear more of in today's Rock industry, Musicianship. Few bands that have a solid fan base now-a-day's show any true skill except simple hard riffs and maybe a catchy, short and often extremely simplistic lead solo here and there. BWR prove that there is still creativity to be found in today's Rock N Roll universe. Strongly recommended to fans of the Hard, Groovy, Southern Rock styles.Black Water Rising Overview

The Rolling Stones, Now ReviewWith the release of the remastered super audio CDs (SACD) of the Stones ABCKO catalog (which includes all the early Decca/London material), there is now some confusion as they have released some of the early albums in both US and UK versions.
The Rolling Stones, Now! was released on Feb 12, 1965 only in the U.S. on London Records. It was never released in the U.K., so there is no UK version on CD. This album was to be the American substitute for the UK release of The Rolling Stones No. 2. As was common at the time, the American execs tampered with the original design of the album, substituting the new American hit Heart of Stone for Time Is On My Side and eliminating Grown Up Wrong, Under The Boardwalk, I Can't Be Satisfied, and Suzie-Q. The tracks Mona, Oh Baby, Little Red Rooster, and Surprise Surprise were not on the UK release of No. 2, although Little Red Rooster was released as a single and became one of their signature songs in the UK.
More than any other Stones release, Now! showcases the original blues band that Brian was always so proud of. The way I heard the story, Brain used to play tracks from this era to show how good the band was before Mick and Keith took over. These included Down The Road Apiece, Little Red Rooster, Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Bright Lights Big City, Down In The Bottom, & Road Runner (the 1st 3 of which are on Now!, the others were never released - except on bootlegs). Personally, I think Down The Road Apiece is the absolute best song they recorded during this period. The Band absolutely cooks on this one. It's what their early reputation was built on and it's what has sustained them for 40 years.....underneath all the hype, fame, and history, they are a really great band.
To understand the impact Mick had on the British scene, all you have to do is listen to Everybody Needs Somebody To Love. His command is impressive and this is really the first time you get to glimpse the superstar he was to become. Little Red Rooster deserves some commentary too....it became a big hit for them in the UK (where the blues were appreciated more than in America). They later did a better version with an old friend named Eric Clapton who used to alternate with Mick as singer in their early days in Richmond and Eel Pie Island (it's on the Flashpoint CD). You Can't Catch Me is a great tribute to Berry, personally I've always liked the song Bill Wyman got onto this album....Oh Baby (although many people, including the Stones themselves considered it a throwaway). Off The Hook is a decent early Mick & Keith song (although not good enough for Mick to keep putting it on all those greatest hits albums to generate songwriting royalities). Down Home Girl has resonated through my thoughts for over 30 years now....it just won't leave me alone, but neither will Down The Road Apiece, so to me these two are the reason you keep a good copy of Now! in your collection.
This is the remastered super audio CDs (SACD) of the Stones ABCKO catalog (which includes all the early Decca/London material. ABCKO acquired the Stones' catalog after Allen Klein became their manager in 1965. The resulting legal battles produced releases that the Stones opposed (they took out full page adds asking fans not to buy them), including the controversial Metamorphosis releases (which are now available on CD for the 1st time ever). But the sad fact is that the Stones lost control of their great early material. With these remastered SACD releases, we at last have some idea of what they really sounded like in the studio. I guess if we had these 40 years ago they would have ended up Greatest Rock And Roll Band in the Universe instead of Greatest Rock And Roll Band in the World.

Complete Clapton ReviewClapton's "Complete Clapton" is an outstanding double CD collection that I would give anyone who had heard of Eric Clapton, but didn't have any of his music. It is an economical collection that is fairly representative of his music, but it is nowhere near a comprehensive collection of his music. With music from his work with Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, and his solo work, including tracks with B.B. King and J.J. Cale, I found this a great CD to have in my car in addition to all the other Clapton CD's I have.
What I enjoy about it most of all is a sense that this is what "he" wanted out on the streets when his autobiography was published. Looking through my collection of Eric Clapton CD's, I am amazed by the sheer amount of work he has issued, with a copy of "Cream of Clapton" and "Clapton Chronicles" serving as chapter dividers around 1995 and 1999.
But, what if you are a true fan of Clapton and you really want to have a definitive collection of his work, what CD's can you purchase now that will give you a true sense of the groups he played with and how his music evolved over the years? Personally, I would have "CrossroadsCrossroads," a four CD Boxed-Set compilation of his earlier work with heavy doses of his work with the Yardbirds, Mayall, and Cream, and later solo work up to the mid 1980's. Another collection, that I don't have, but it has more of his earlier work with groups you never knew he performed with, and several tunes he played with Jimmy Page, is "Clapton is God," Clapton Is God: The Cream of Early Eric Clapton a four CD collection that is an import from England. A second box-set I would have would be the Derek and the Dominos 20th Anniversary one, The Layla Sessions : 20th Anniversary Edition that has an extra 2.5 hours of recordings that feature Eric playing along with Duane Allman. This is a great set of recordings. The third CD collection I would have to be representative of his work would be either the "Clapton Chronicles" Clapton Chronicles - The Best of Eric Claptonor "Complete Clapton" because they both have two of his better commercial successes, "Forever Man" and "It's In the Way You Use It" along with several of his "unplugged" work, "Layla" and "Tears in Heaven." All-in-all, "Complete Clapton" is a great double CD for someone who doesn't have any Clapton music, and I wouldn't hesitate buying it to have in my car or as a gift for those in your life who are musically challenged.Complete Clapton Overview

The History of Rock and Roll (2004) ReviewIncredibly entertaining; especially for anyone who has lived through the times talked about. Many, many of the songs ARE full-length versions, albeit with commentary provided over the top. But, after all, it is a documentary and not a CD set. Heroes: Giants of Early Guitar Rock ReviewNot too many. Dion is definately one. Everything he's done since YO, FRANKIE has been pure rockin' GOLD, and this album is no exception.
Great songs, by a GREAT artist who deserves to have more people know that he is simply BETTER THAN EVER. (PLUS a terrific DVD as a bonus). Sample these songs. Buy this record. Then go back for YO,FRANKIE, DEJA NEW, the incredible NEW MASTERS, his Blues albums--BRONX IN BLUE, and SON OF SKIP JAMES, and the best Christmas album of all-time: ROCK N' ROLL CHRISTMAS.
When you're done with all that, get the DION:LIVE IN CONCERT DVD, and then find a way to see him LIVE yourself.
Yeah, I guess I like Dion. He's one of my very favorite artists, but it's not just some oldies nostalgia trip---I mean, sure--he was one of the greatest of the early rockers, no doubt.
