The Very Best of Tommy Emmanuel ReviewI first heard Tommy performing on TV a while back. I was blown away. I never heard anyone play acoustic guitar like him...ever! I then heard him live and was just so impressed - what a fresh new way of interpretting the acoustic guitar. No one plays harmonics like Tommy. So I ordered this CD and was devistated from the start. This wasn't the Tommy I knew and loved. It was watered down Tommy and doesn't serve justice to how good he really is. This is why I am being so critial. You will never know his true talent by listening to these CD's. The music is poorly produced and poorly mixed. Much of the time the accompanyment sounds like the main feature with Tommy playing somewhere in the background. In fact, sometimes it sounds like he is playing at the far end of the room, away from everyone else, or even in a differnt room altogether. Tommy's guitar playing is meek, not very expressive and is shrouded in effects. I mean how much reverb does one need. The drums sound like they come from a track machine with reverb. The orchestration is cheesy synthesizer tracks. I am not sure what went wrong here. I am still disspointed whenever I listen to it. Ultimate Collection ReviewThey may not like the way he holds his mic, but this man can play, write and jam! This CD is an essential piece for fans of 1980's R&B. The hits, Crazay, Can You Help Me, Be Your Man, and Baby Let's Kiss are classics. The coup de gras is the inclusion of B-side "Free World". This has got to be Jesse's funkiest track.
Often, when there is a collection, I feel like they either missed a jam or included a marginal tune. This one, though, hits it. I love all the songs on this. Jesse even included 2 other B-sides, and an unreleased vibe (which is very cool).
If you like Jesse, the Time, or the "Minneapolis Sound", make certain you grab this one !Ultimate Collection Overview

Talk Is Cheap ReviewThis album made the top 40 album charts back in 1988 and went Gold. It got very good reviews and then was completely forgotten about. This album is a stone cold classic and every song on here is damn good.The band that Keith assembled for this project is one of the best bands ever, outside of the Rolling Stones. They have their own funky, rockin' groove, unbeatable energy and sound like they have been playing together forevor, instead of for mere weeks. If James Brown reallly wants to make a comeback, all he has to do is cover the opening song-"Big Enough". It is done in the classic J.B style and features Bootsy Collins on bass, Maceo Parker on alto sax and Bernie Worrell on organ. Ex- Stone Mick Taylor even puts in an appearance on "I Could Have Stood You Up", a rockabilly tune so authentic, it sounds like it was written for Elvis in 1956. It even features Chuck Berry's keyboard man Johnnie Johnson tearing up the keys as only he can. "Make No Mistake" is one of Keith's very best ballads and features his most soulful vocal ever. It has the Memphis Horns on it to give it real southern soul and funk. "You Don't Move Me" is a lyrical bitch slap to his old partner/nemesis Mick Jagger.(Mick retaliated with "Shoot off Your Mouth" later the same year on his limp "Primitive Cool" solo album.) He called this band the X-Pensive Winos and the other members included Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Steve Jordan on drums, Ivan Neville on keyboards and Charlie Drayton on bass. They even went on tour and released a good live album, although the album didn't come out until 1991(the tour was in '88). There is some good New Orleans cajun funk on "Rockawhile" with Sara Dash wailing soulfully on background vocals and Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural pumping away on his accordion. The band really locks into a groove on this one. This album features better songs and more committed playing than most Stones albums from this era and is way funkier than any of Sir Mick's spotty solo albums. The next time Mick wants to do a solo project, he should hire the X-Pensive Winos featuring Keith Richards.Talk Is Cheap Overview1988 debut solo album from the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist that was co-produced with drummer Steve Jordan.This also marked the first appearance of his backing band, The X-Pensive Winos, who provide loose but disciplined backing for the Rock hero.Veteran Funk masters William "Bootsy" Collins and keyboardist Bernie Worrell contributed their talents as well.

Center Stage ReviewI was fortunate enough to hear Tommy Emmanuel live in concert in May of this year (2008). From the opening notes to the last encore, he was one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever heard.
His technical skill is amazing, but he's about more than flash. He plays with a wide range of deep human emotion, and does it all with great wit.
This recording captures the essence of that experience. It's a live concert recording that finds him at his best, showing off his skills, and connecting and communicating with the audience. It may sound like hyperbole, but this recording has rocketed onto my list of my favorite recordings of all time.
If you haven't heard Tommy, this recording is the place to start!Center Stage Overview

Live @ The Fillmore Review"Car Wheels on A Gravel Road" was a Grammy-winner that introduced millions of new fans (including me) to the brilliant performer Lucinda Williams whose poetic lyrics, memorable tunes and country-rock sound seemed both fresh and timeless, especially to fans of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Her subsequent albums, however, did not seem to reach her new fan base. The spare but evocative lyrics turned stark and minimal, and the emotions they revealed seemed extremely personal. The music was somewhat the same, but darker, more claustrophic, an accompaniment to the obsessive mood. I liked these albums ("Essence" and "World Without Tears") but if you didn't find them a little disturbing, you really weren't listening.
With "Live @ the Fillmore," Lucinda seems to be breaking all ties to the "Car Wheels" gal, and saying to her fans that this intense, internal, obsessive space is where she's at and where she's staying. This album is not a recap of her career, a greatest hits collection. It is almost completely devoted to the last two albums, and the few earlier songs that she includes either predicted her current direction, or are reinterpreted here in a darker vein than the originals.
Does she sell these songs? I would say yes, completely. They benefit from the greater expressiveness of live performances. Her vocal delivery is even harsher, the incredible steel guitar/electric guitar work of Doug Pettibone is even more expressive, at times sheer metal noise, at other times lonesome sobbing. These songs seem very close to the bone; I almost felt I was a Peeping Tom hearing her bemoan a hit and run lover in "Those Three Days," instruct a too-selfish lover in "Righteously," or paint a dark picture of solitude in "Ventura." This is a full-grown woman in three dimensions, a woman who has not found love to be much more than a momentary release followed by aching disaster. It can be scary. But it is artistically brilliant and satisfying.Live @ The Fillmore OverviewLost Highway is set to release the first-ever live album from Grammy Award-winning artist Lucinda Williams. Lucinda recorded this collection of live songs over her 3 night appearance at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore Auditorium. Live @ the Fillmore is on double CD and comes in a deluxe packaging. All 22 tracks that appear in this collection were hand selected by Lucinda. This double album includes such favorites as 'Joy', 'I Lost It', 'Essence' and 'Blue', but Williams digs even deeper into her past with gritty versions of 'Pineola' and 'Changed The Locks'. Live @ the Fillmore features one of the best bands on the road today, with guitarist, pedal steel and background vocalist Doug Pettibone, anchored by Taras Prodaniuk on bass and Jim Christie on drums and percussion. 2005.

Gypsy Passion: New Flamenco (Narada Collection Series) ReviewWith apologies to Mr. L.K. Coleman and his utterly misleading Spotlight Review, this album does not pretend to be anything but what it is. Flamenco is a traditional form of music born in Andalusian Spain and created from Indian, Arabic, Jewish, Romano-Iberian and Celto-Iberian elements. GYPSY PASSION and its successors in the Narada catalogue are examples of Nuevo Flamenco or "New Flamenco" which is a style of Fusion incorporating traditional Flamenco, Jazz, Rock, Classical, and other musics. Either Mr. Coleman doesn't know about New Flamenco as a school of performance, or he's a purist who just dislikes it.
In either case, this album deserves five stars as a lively, engaging and pleasurable listening experience. And yes, "New Flamenco" has revitalized the traditional Andalusian form in modern-day Spain. Dust Bowl ReviewJoe Bonamassa is nothing if not old-school, releasing an album a year since 2000 despite touring relentlessly. That's a refreshing change from the modern norm of artists going years between releases/tours. "Dust Bowl" is the latest in Joe's increasingly-impressive catalog.
The album opens with "Slow Train," an original that features a clever instrumental intro mimicking the start-up of a steam engine, a blistering solo, and an arresting vocal. "Dust Bowl," another original, is a twang-and-tremolo treat with a vocal reminiscent of "Book of Dreams"-era Steve Miller and a spooky spoken-word voice-over by Peter Van Weelden, Joe's current favorite amp guru. The rollicking "Tennessee Plates" features a rocking duet (both vocal and instrumental) with John Hiatt. Next up is a cover of the Bobby Troup/Leah Worth jazz classic "The Meaning of the Blues," with some more of Joe's tasty soloing; definitely not the Miles Davis version! "Black Lung Heartache" is another original that deftly blends some unusual stringed instruments with a crunchy rock riff. "You Better Watch Yourself," an old Little Walter hit, is meat-and-potatoes blues-rock that gives the wah pedal a workout. "The Last Matador of Bayonne," another original, slows the pace but features a soaring solo in Joe's trademark style. Joe's Black Country Communion bandmate Glenn Hughes joins in for a duet on the Paul Rodgers/Free classic "Heartbreaker," and their affection for the material comes across in a fine performance. Another cover, of the Tim Curry/Michael Kamen grinder "No Love On the Street," keeps the classic blues-rock vibe going and features guests Beth Hurt and Blondie Chaplin. "The Whale That Swallowed Jonah," another original, is an up-tempo number with a nice blend of acoustic sounds (including Joe on mandolin) with electric. Vince Gill drops in for a visit on a cover of his "Sweet Rowena," a guitar/vocal duet that is one of the album's high points. The album winds up with "Prisoner," written by Blue By Nature's Karen Lawrence, a song Barbra Streisand made famous when she sang it on the "Eyes of Laura Mars" soundtrack.
I suppose it is to be expected that an artist will always describe her/his most recent work as "the best yet" (as Joe does in the liner notes here), but in this case I would agree. This is a collection of finely-crafted, affecting performances in a variety of styles. Joe's vocals have never seemed more relaxed and confident, and the guitar work is exemplary (duh!). Joe says he was worn out from touring and needed a break when this album was recorded. I'm sure that was true, but this album sure doesn't show it. Highly recommended.Dust Bowl Overview

Pure Blues ReviewPure Blues is a good sampler of Alvin Lee's music, both with Ten Years After and solo. It looks like a standard compilation, yet it concentrates solely on blues-based material. Ten Years After, though, was not just a blues-rock group. They were deeply rooted in '50s rock and roll and jazz in addition to blues, so this compilation really only shows one part of the Alvin Lee picture. But if you're a major blues lover like me, that's okay.
It starts with the acoustic "Don't Want You Woman" from Ten Years After's self-titled debut (currently out of print). Other highlights are the heavy riff-driven "I Woke Up This Morning", and "The Stomp" (both from the SSSSH album) and two killer live tracks, "Slow Blues in C" and "Help Me" from the Recorded Live album.
This is a nice sampler, but don't make the mistake of letting this be the only Alvin Lee/Ten Years After CD you check out. If you like this, further listening should be: Undead (1968), Recorded Live (1973), and last year's release of Ten Years After Live at the Fillmore East.
If you're looking for a good Ten Years After compilation, the ideal choice would be the new Ten Years After Anthology 1967 - 1971. It covers all the sides of TYA's music, from rock to blues to jazz.Pure Blues Overview

Stanley Jordan - Live in Montreal (Montreal Jazz Festival) (1996) ReviewI got this DVD for Christmas and I've watched it about 10 times already. This is a superb performance by Stanley, and in my opinion is the best live release in terms of musical performance of all of his. The sound and picture on this are of the highest quality, better than any other music DVDs I own.
My favorite song of the concert is "One Less Bell to Answer". He plays this with such incredible emotion and with an amazing arrangement that I am just mesmerized when I watch it. In my opinion this is the best song I've ever heard him perform live.
Other highlights include "All the Children" which is performed beautifully, and "Flying Home". Other songs like "Cousin Mary" sound really great with his trio. They have a very lively sound.
The interview and bonus track are cool too. The bass and drum solos are neat on the bonus track "Return Expedition".
