All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites ReviewThese sevillanas are just great and its amazing to me that they are not heard much. Maybe because, in spite of the great listening and the flamenco action that is heard, you are left out of the visual action. Not being a native speaker of the language, having the spanish lyrics to the music would greatly enhance the enjoyment. I've tried to find lyrics on the net, and even tried to purchase lyrics from the distributor Madacy, all without success. All The Best Spanish Flamenco: 20 Great Favorites Overview

Friday Night in San Francisco - Live ReviewI first heard this on vinyl. Properly awed, I promptly listened to all the other instrumental guitar music I could find. Now, twenty years or so later, I'd challenge critics: Name the OTHER acoustic guitar recording that even meets, let alone surpasses, the standard set by "Friday Night in San Francisco." I love Leo Kottke and Allan Holdsworth and Phil Keaggy and all the rest, but this is still the pre-eminent acoustic recording.
Here are two points to consider:
(1) Critics talk about the emotion and beauty being lost in the fireworks. Certainly the fireworks take up the majority of the CD, but listen again to the quiet moment right before the conclusion of "Short Tales of the Black Forest," where one of the guitarists even tells the rowdy crowd, "Shut up, now" (and, by the way, when was the last time you heard a live performer have to tell the crowd to curb its enthusiasm?). Or what about the haunting, eerie melody of the middle section of "Fantasia Suite"? You'll hear it in your dreams.
So, first of all, this recording does have the "beautiful" moments. But that leads into the second response:
(2) Don't miss the point! This is not supposed to be a meditative hour to play in the background while you eat your tofu meat loaf. These three guitarists clearly wanted to have fun with each other, to provoke each other to better performance, and, primarily, to blow away the listener who never thought acoustic guitar could sound remotely like this. If judged by these criteria, "Friday Night in San Francisco" deserves seven or eight stars instead of five.Friday Night in San Francisco - Live OverviewThe great guitar trio's classic original recording has been remastered. No Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: MCLAUGHLIN/DIMEOLA/DELUCIATitle: FRIDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCOStreet Release Date: 09/23/1997

Art of Paco Pena ReviewIf you're just interested in Flamenco Guitar, you'd be better off with Paco's double album of that title, as this one includes selections from the Flamenco Mass and from the duet album of South American music with Eduardo Falú.
That said, this is a good introduction to Paco, especially if you can't afford all the other albums.Art of Paco Pena Overview

Anthology of Flamenco Songs ReviewNowadays anything with a spanish guitar is categorized under flamenco. This album is no Ottmar-Liebert poppy stuff ,this is flamenco in its purest form. The powerful voice of Fosforito driven by the guitar of no other than Paco de Lucia makes this album a must have for true flamenco fans.Anthology of Flamenco Songs Overview

Gypsy Passion: New Flamenco (Narada Collection Series) ReviewWith apologies to Mr. L.K. Coleman and his utterly misleading Spotlight Review, this album does not pretend to be anything but what it is. Flamenco is a traditional form of music born in Andalusian Spain and created from Indian, Arabic, Jewish, Romano-Iberian and Celto-Iberian elements. GYPSY PASSION and its successors in the Narada catalogue are examples of Nuevo Flamenco or "New Flamenco" which is a style of Fusion incorporating traditional Flamenco, Jazz, Rock, Classical, and other musics. Either Mr. Coleman doesn't know about New Flamenco as a school of performance, or he's a purist who just dislikes it.
In either case, this album deserves five stars as a lively, engaging and pleasurable listening experience. And yes, "New Flamenco" has revitalized the traditional Andalusian form in modern-day Spain. GYPSY PASSION is absolutely worth your time.Gypsy Passion: New Flamenco (Narada Collection Series) Overview

Ole: Bullfight Music From Spain ReviewThis is bullfight music. Some bullfight bands include large brass instruments (like the tuba or French horn) and few, if any, violins. This band has the large brass instruments and no violins. I mention this distinction so you can choose whichever suits you. I like both alternatives and bought both types. You can find both by searching on "Bullfight Music". When I searched, I found this CD of bands with large brass instruments. One of the other CDs featured a mariachi band with prominent violins.Ole: Bullfight Music From Spain Overview

Great Masters of Flamenco, Vol. 3 ReviewUniversally considered the greatest female cante of the 20th century, that of Pastora Pavón (1890-1969) sometimes surprises those hearing it for the first time with its harshness and somewhat nasal quality (reportedly, this was an effect of age); but there is no missing its emotive power, or its total mastery. Much of it was learned from the legendary Manuel Torre, the lover of her youth, and much from other major 19th century singers whose cante would have been lost had she not perpetuated it.
The recording is ropy by modern standards, but this is pure flamenco history -- especially as the guitarists are Melchor de Marchena, Manolo de Badajoz and Niño Ricardo!
The total time is 39'59"

Legends of Gypsy Flamenco ReviewNo one does flamenco better than the gypsies. The artists on this cd are renown flamenco musicians/performers. This is high caliber stuff we have here, ladies and gentlemen. What you will hear here is what the performers do for themselves after the tourists have gone away. Like what we do here in Sevilla on the weekends in our courtyards with just family and friends. Pure flamenco with soul and passion, no commercial performances for the tourists. This is a great cd with famous artists and "Legends of Gypsy Flamenco II" follows in its footsteps. I would highly recommend starting here for people who are beginning to listen to flamenco music before they hear "nouveau flamenco".Legends of Gypsy Flamenco Overview

Aires de Sefarad: 46 Spanish Songs for Violin and Guitar ReviewSefarad Spain, particularily the zone of Andalusia, was more of a time than a place, a period when Jewish, Muslims, and Christians shared the same dress, the same instruments, and often the same melodies. These tunes were of the Jewish community from their last period in Sefarad and thereby sung in the language of Ladino. Liderman is a composer whose modern works are interesting but not always accessible. These pieces, however, are very much so, as the melodies are fundamentally the same as catalogued. Liderman's innovation is his arrangements, rhythmic patterns, and the choice of instruments. Violin and guitar are an unusual but a good pairing. The guitar is Spain and keeps us anchored in its spirit. The violin takes the place of the customary soprano. The assortment of tunes are varied and keeps our attention. The recording is nicely engineered, the artists' performance is excellent, and we are left in a good mood and somewhat nostalgic for place many of us have never been and a time no one today knows.Aires de Sefarad: 46 Spanish Songs for Violin and Guitar Overview

Masters of Flamenco Guitar ReviewWith all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.Masters of Flamenco Guitar Overview
