Music of Barrios ReviewI have both Russell and Williams.
I don't see why some people find one better than the other.
Both are amazing; they are just different.
If you like a musically and technically sophisticated performance, Williams may suit you better. If you believe music should be something romantic and beautiful, you should definitely go for Russell. Besides, they contain many different songs.
If you are a guitar enthusiast, you should have both. They are worth the money!!!Music of Barrios Overview

Ten String Spectacular - Ten-String Guitar works by Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel, Satie, Tarrega, Albeniz, Rodrigo, and Granados ReviewA 10 string guitar is a regular 6 string with an addition of 4 more strings that are bass guitar strings. So Macaluso plays the guitar and the bass part at the same time...it makes for a very full sound for a solo guitar. When this album first came out I never heard of any sort of trick modifications on a standard 6 string setup so for me this was initially a novelty album.But Macaluso really has a feel for that romantic classical stuff and the 10 string really gives these pieces a 'smooth' and velvety feel. Some of the pieces are originally piano works so when played on piano there is something of a stuccato way about them. Clair De Lune comes out real nice,very soft,and played very sweet with out a trace of sapynes.It is a good example of the beauty of the guitar's sound and Macaluso's great technique.But even if your not interested in the interesting technicalities in this album, it is a most relaxing and beautiful album to listen to. La Paloma / Spanish Favorites ReviewGod, do I love this CD. A friend of mine introduced me to it. He, however, had a CD-R. I bought the authentic CD and was even more impressed. The difference in the sound quality is amazing. The CD-R sounds like a crummy radio station with poor reception. The real CD is crisp, clear, full of the nuances and subtleties that makes music enjoyable. Aire Latino: Latin American Music for Guitar ReviewThis is a great performance for the very versatile David Russell. His playing is thoughtful and expressive, but also sensitive and not overly extraverted. His use of rubato is excellent on most tracks, and his constant contrast of dynamics, as well as vibrato, give the pieces on this album real life and emotion.
I had been performing 5 of the tracks on this album when it came out, so I can attest to the difficulty of many of these pieces, especially all three movements of the Morel "Sonatina." I can also say that his performances of these is very true; I could hear no incorrect notes , with the exception of some added notes in the first movement of "Sonatina," which I have since adopted myself for my own performance. His expressive interpretation is likewise impeccable on these tracks.
This record would be a great purchase for anyone interested in classical guitar, whether they are just getting into the genre or already have a large collection, or anyone interested in Latin American art music.Aire Latino: Latin American Music for Guitar Overview

Reflections of Spain: Spanish Favorites for Guitar ReviewRussell's superb performance and the incredible Dammann guitar bring out the very best in each, and that combination is breathtaking. Russell's two tracks composed by Tarrega are, in my opinion, the best recordings of those compositions, which shouldn't be a surprise as Russell won the Francisco Tarrega Competition in Spain. The beauty of the tremelo on track three is hard to describe except that I stop whatever I'm doing each time I hear it, and I've played this CD often. A lot.
The recording quality is impressive but drifts into subtle significance after listening to an hour plus of rich full-bodied Russell/Dammann genius. (How does Russell do so much without any string sqeeks?)Reflections of Spain: Spanish Favorites for Guitar Overview
