Elvis: '68 Comeback (1968) ReviewThis DVD has just the basics of Elvis' excellent 1968 special. If you want an in-depth presentation, you should get the 2 DVD Deluxe edition. This DVD includes nearly all of the footage of the original show. Elvis' performances are outstanding, especially the "informal" jam session, where Elvis actually plays his guitar instead of just using it as a prop! Elvis' informal jam session was an early precursor of the MTV Unplugged series that would follow more than 20 years later. The bonus material includes some outtakes and photos, but really does not add much to the set. This DVD should be enough for the average fan and it is available at a reasonable price. We Wish You a Metal Xmas & A Headbanging New ReviewI have purchased quite a few Rock Christmas compilations, but none have been as well arranged, produced and recorded as this one. Those that say this is stupid must be turned off by the "Christ" part of the equation on this CD because it is stock full of great Hard Rock guitar solos and searing vocals. NOTHING on this CD is stupid musically. As a matter of fact, I don't know of any other compilation that I have heard that contains as much talent as this CD does (and it shows).
First off, however, I would like to point out that the track listing supply by Amazon's description was not accurate as the following is the track list for the copy they sent me:

We Wish You a Merry Xmas - The guitars are awesome. Great solos. And the Drums are very prominent, giving the song a heavy feel.
Run Rudolph Run - Billy Gibbons tears up the guitars on this song and Limmy puts his Motorhead stamp on it his raw gravely vocals.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town - The song starts out with a creepy S-A-N-T-A C-L-A-W-S chant by Alice Cooper and then rocks it's way in the traditional lyrics with a sound only Alice Cooper could give it.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - to me, this song stands out slightly over the rest of the album. Dio's vocals are in top form and the guitars are extremely heavy on this version. It sounds like it belongs on a Black Sabbath record.
Silver Bells - Although the guitars on this song are over the top, the vocals feel a little out of place on this one. Geoff Tate has the vocals to fill a stadium, but I'm not sure I like him singing a jingle like this.
Little Drummer Boy - Starts with a heavy drum beat and then Dug Pinnick adds his voice perfectly for this song. This is by far my favorite version of this song ever. George Lynch adds some great guitar licks to the song and you can hear Billy Sheehan laying down a nice rhythm on bass.
Santa Claus is Back in Town - Tim Owens sings like he normally does and it works well on this song. But the best part of the song is the guitars by Steve Morse.
Silent Night - This is the only song on the CD that I do not like. It's not because of the guitars because they are great. It's because of the vocals. I HATE the growling vocal trend that so many Death Metal bands use today. That is how the vocals are done on this song and it makes me feel as though he is straining on the toilet throughout the entire song. That's just my taste, I am sure some will like it. I will have to say that there is one of the best guitar solos on the record in the middle of this song.
Deck the Halls - Solid vocals round out a song full of (one again) great guitar work.
Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer - I thought that there was no way this song could be made into a true rocker. I was wrong. The main guitar riff on this song is awesome.
Rockin' Around the Xmas Tree - Yet again, the guitars on this song kick you in the face. This song has a real blues feel .
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - This is the only truly slow song on the CD. Tommy Shaw does a great job on vocals and ends the CD with a calm tune that brings you down slowly from the rush of the pure adrenaline of the previous 11 songs.
Anyone that says this CD is stupid has clearly not listened to it. It may not be for you if you don't celebrate Christmas, but don't skip out on this simply because you think it's not a Hard Rock record. I was very impressed. I also bought "We Wish You A Hairy Christmas" and although it has its moments, it does not even compare to this one. If you celebrate Christmas and like Hard Rock, you will LOVE this CD.

Gypsy Soul: New Flamenco ReviewThis is not traditional flamenco, but rather a mixture of flamenco, Latin and jazz wrapped together to make for seventy-minutes of pure listening joy. The flamenco style is definitely the overlying theme of the album filled with tremolos, rasgueos, glopes and lightning-fast runs. Everyone that appears on this album is a master of the guitar, from those you'd expect like Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola to those who will surprise you, namely Slash. Fourteen tracks and sixteen amazing pickers provide a varied flavor for this album.
Jesse Cook starts the album with "Rattle and Burn" and sets the tone with this rumba-sounding piece. His melody comes off effortless with elegant ease. A very nice sounding piece. There is something special about two or more guitars playing at the same time, which makes "Heat of the Sun" from Strunz and Farah a joy to listen to. Each guitarist has their own voice and they counterbalance each other well. Plus, the speed of these guys is unbelievable. A more classic sounding piece comes from Oscar Lopez from his piece "Fire and Fury". Lopez is a master of the guitar and music as can be seen from the way he changes speeds throughout this piece with fingers a blur. Ruben Romero turns in the star performance of this album with his rendition of "Malaguena". His slow intro gives way to increasing speed, and his techniques will leave your jaw dropped.
Compilations like "Gypsy Soul" are great in exposing you to many artists at one time each with their own sound and nuances. This allows you to follow up with the artists that you enjoy the most. There isn't a dud on this album, and the talent and sound will leave you begging for more.Gypsy Soul: New Flamenco Overview

The Golden Era of Rock 'n' Roll: 1954-1963 ReviewCompiled to celebrate rock and roll's 50th anniversary this year, this Hip-O three-disc, 62 song set features some of the best sound treatment these evergreens have received in the CD era. Gavin Lurssen's exceptional remastering allows you to clearly hear the Coasters' bass-tenor harmony-comedy in 1958's "Yakety Yak" and the Cadets' in 1956's still-weird operetta "Stranded in the Jungle." You hear the rollicking piano behind the guitar solo in Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City," and the twangy guitar intros to Richie Valens and the Everly Brothers' (not to mention original twangy guitar Duane Eddy's) signature songs.
And signature songs, one from each artist, is all executive producer Andy MacKaie's team seemed to have room for in this expansive collection. One song each from titans like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Rick Nelson and Buddy Holly. In most cases he safely relied on their first hits ("Maybelline," "Tutti Fruitti") but also allowed hints of the 1960s producer-dominated era in tracks from the Four Seasons and Beach Boys. Hearing "Rock Around the Clock" and "Tequila" again recalls how popular these songs remained in films and television more than three decades after first charting.
Despite Billy Altman's pedantic liner notes, the set deserves five stars for the sheer number and quality of hits present (more than 30 #1 hits and more than enough songs associated with the era.) Too many artists are missing for "The Golden Era" to be definitive: no Elvis, nothing from the Cameo-Parkway or Phil Spector eras, a curious Sam Cooke track. But this collection is a worthwhile introduction or summary of rock and roll's first 10 years, an era fading from oldies station playlists and for today's senior citizens (teenagers when Elvis hit in 1954) becoming the anachronism the big bands were to a previous generation. Essential music, worthwhile here but more so in individual anthologies from Berry, Holly, and others.

Ten String Spectacular - Ten-String Guitar works by Debussy, Poulenc, Ravel, Satie, Tarrega, Albeniz, Rodrigo, and Granados ReviewA 10 string guitar is a regular 6 string with an addition of 4 more strings that are bass guitar strings. So Macaluso plays the guitar and the bass part at the same time...it makes for a very full sound for a solo guitar. When this album first came out I never heard of any sort of trick modifications on a standard 6 string setup so for me this was initially a novelty album.But Macaluso really has a feel for that romantic classical stuff and the 10 string really gives these pieces a 'smooth' and velvety feel. Some of the pieces are originally piano works so when played on piano there is something of a stuccato way about them. Clair De Lune comes out real nice,very soft,and played very sweet with out a trace of sapynes.It is a good example of the beauty of the guitar's sound and Macaluso's great technique.But even if your not interested in the interesting technicalities in this album, it is a most relaxing and beautiful album to listen to. The music is very peaceful and calming, while still being musically interesting. I find myself humming many of the melodies throughout the day, as they are very catching. This CD has had heavy playing time since I bought it; I listen to it while studying, reading, cooking, etc. It rarely ever gets stored on the shelf--more like a permanent home next to the cd player, if not *in* the cd player. Rattlesnake Guitar: Music of Peter Green ReviewI don't usually buy tribute CD's but have made an occassional exception or two. Until I obtained this CD, the best tribute CD in my collection was "You're Gonna Miss Me When I am Dead and Gone" the tribute to Muddy Waters by the Muddy Waters Band.
This CD has now moved ahead of the pack and given the diversity of musicians on this CD, that was no easy feat. Unlike the Muddy tribute which features one band doing all of the songs, this CD features as many as 40 different musicians playing their own version of some of these great songs without simply attempting to copy Green's style. I think its safe to say, that having 40 plus musicians participating on one tribute CD could be a receipe for disaster. However, in this case it worked.
There are 29 songs on this double CD and it is not easy to pick one over the others. However, in my opinion, Clas Yngstrom's interpretation of "The Supernatural" is nothing short of fantastic. Also, as a big Rory Gallagher fan, I was particularly pleased with his two songs "Leaving Town Blues" and "Showbiz Blues" which are not going to be found anywhere else.
All in all, there is more than enough on this CD to please even the most jaded fan. If this CD doesn't do it for you, check your pulse, you may well be dead!!Rattlesnake Guitar: Music of Peter Green Overview

This is high caliber stuff we have here, ladies and gentlemen. What you will hear here is what the performers do for themselves after the tourists have gone away. Like what we do here in Sevilla on the weekends in our courtyards with just family and friends. Pure flamenco with soul and passion, no commercial performances for the tourists. This is a great cd with famous artists and "Legends of Gypsy Flamenco II" follows in its footsteps. La Paloma / Spanish Favorites ReviewGod, do I love this CD. A friend of mine introduced me to it. He, however, had a CD-R. I bought the authentic CD and was even more impressed. The difference in the sound quality is amazing. The CD-R sounds like a crummy radio station with poor reception. The real CD is crisp, clear, full of the nuances and subtleties that makes music enjoyable. Latin American Guitar Music ReviewAlthough I'm honestly tired of all the "Latin collection" CDs out there, this one is played by a "real" Latin and you can hear it from the first track. It is not only believable, but compelling. The poetry in Reis's two pieces (Track 2,3) is simply beautiful and Cobo's phrasing is refreshingly provocative rather than safe. This player's music is fluid, his sound silky and detailed, and his musical thinking exciting and natural. Although I have several versions of Piazzolla on guitar, these arrangements totally rock. Cobo's arrangement of "El Choclo" is dazzling, especially the last variation. Without saying more, every track on this recording is really special. Take it from a serious student of guitar and avid listener- this CD is a must-have if you like guitar.Latin American Guitar Music Overview
