Sonny James - 20 All Time Greatest Hits ReviewIt amazes me that material from artists like Sonny James is so poorly represented in todays marketplace. The "Gentleman from the South" still holds the record for the most consecutive #1 hits on the Billboard country charts (16) and has charted over 20 #1 hits. So where are they all??? His years on Capitol Records (covered by this disc) would fill a 15 disc box set. These are all great tunes but there just aren't enough of them.Sonny James - 20 All Time Greatest Hits Overview

Essential ReviewChet Atkins is not the most flambouyant guitarist, but his skill and technique make him not only one of country music's best guitarists, but a highly influential guitar player during the formative years of rock 'n' roll, having played guitar on most of the Everly Brothers early recordings including "Bye Bye Love" and "Wake Up Little Susie."
This 20-track collection begins with a 1954 recording of "Mr. Sandman" and concludes with 1982's "Chet's Medley." Heavily influenced by Merle Travis, this all-instrumental set shows why Atkins is Nashville's superpicker. His song selections run the gamut from country to pop to tin pan alley to movie themes and all stops in between.
If this set leaves you wanting more, try and track down the two-disc set The RCA Years. Also superb is the two-fer set with Les Paul--Chester & Lester/Guitar Monsters and the pairing with Mark Knopfler on Neck and Neck. But the Essential Chet Atkins will serve adequately as a primer for this legendary guitarist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDEssential Overview

The Real Merle Travis Guitar - Like Father, Like Son ReviewI bought this DVD mainly to learn to play Merle Travis' arrangement of "I'll See You In My Dreams". Who better to learn from then Merle's own son, right? At first, Thom Bresh's charming but informal style of teaching was a bit hard to follow. He seemed to skip through things and it was sometimes hard to tell exactly what he was doing. As my own skills picked up, though, I realized Thom's approach was very much in keeping with the Travis style of picking - forceful, swinging and loose. If you're a beginner, like I was, you might want to start with Marcel Dadi's excellent and very precise DVDs (Nashville Picking vols 1 & 2) and then move on to Thom.
